I've just go this laptop and I'm having a couple of issues:
1. When I press shutdown, it sometimes decides to restart instead![]()
2. It starts up occasionally when I just flip open the screen without pressing the power.
Anyone can help?

So im thinking that maybe i want to overclock a little, seeing as my temps are so good,
after 3 hours of ps2 on high@1080p, max cpu temp was 74°, max gpu was 65°,external around the bottem vent was roughly 48°.how does this compare with you guys, and more importantly, do they seem low enough to put a few more mhz on the gpu? espicially since most people report good o/c temps on kepler? -

Check your advanced power management options in the control panel and check the options under open/close lid behavior. I had issues where the USB port power would turn off when I closed the lid which I had to go into Power management to turn off that option. ASUS also has their own bloatware power management as well, so check there as well.

I've used this way, subwoofer is working but my microphone doesn't work anymore((

It's not that hard to revert to W7, really. I put together a little how-to some time ago that should still be servicable (see link in my sig).
Did you all see the notebookreview review yet? ASUS ZenBook UX51V Review
Seemed fair to me, although I personally don't care for having a touchscreen on a not-tablet-convertible laptop. -

Thank you. The hardest thing left to do now is to find this bloody laptop -.- they're sold out everywhere :\
 -
Sorry, Microsoft's problem. I run Linux Mint and Windows 8 - I've hated Microsoft for a little over ten years.
Check MSFT forums for that problem. -
Why? Overclocking just to overclock is ....... well, not all that smart.
C'mon, what does this CPU leave you wanting for? My guess is nothing. -

I hate Windows since NT 3.51, but have to say that once you block WIn 8's very stupid, Mark Shuttleworth's influenced GUI, it is actually better than Win 7. Loads of ways to make Win 8 to look like Win 7 but faster and more stable. I am writing this in Chrome on top of Mint 14.

I have an strange issue. The power AC adapter makes a clicking sound, not so loud but sounds as if it was shorting inside. I have just 2 weeks with the laptop and this started the day before yesterday. Is it even safe to use my PC with this adapter?I ask because I have been using for two days now without other issue than the annoying sound.
Also, I can't find where to buy a new one....
Any ideas appreciated! -

It seems Asus is preparing a new revision with the i7-3632qm so I guess (or hope) itll be back in stock soon.
 -

Yep, that's the model I'm waiting for. I thought it'd been around for a while already..

After reading so many pages can people confirm throws about the USA
1. Non touch versions are available , hard to find, about 2k
2. No ETA for touch model
3. Touch available in most of Europe with dual sSD
4. Hybrid sSD and large hd only in Ukraine
Correct?? -

There's a difference between CPU and GPU, Kepler is nVidias codename for the GPU generation used in the GT 650M. A friendly tip: Even if it wasn't your intention your posting style indicates that you (arrogantly) know Shrike99s usage better than him.

I was thinking of getting this laptop. I do have a few questions.
Are the U500vz and the UX51vz the same laptop?
I see that the U500vz is not being sold in the US and it seems it can be sold with an optional touch screen.
Is there no version of the UX51vz with touch?
By having touch, does it mean I won't get the nice screen that normally comes with this laptop (IPS)? -

U500VZ is just another name for UX51VZ. My machine was bought as a U500VZ but have a BIOS identify of UX51VZA. Don't know why Asus choose to have different names for the same machine

IIRC the screen is still the IPS one but with a reflective (glare type) surface (probably for some technical reason). -

Microsoft Store just started selling UX51Vz with touchscreen.
Buy ASUS ZENBOOK Prime UX51Vz-US71T Touchscreen Ultrabook - Microsoft Store Online -

On the US store only, as always :'(

So I've been following this thread for a while and now I'm pretty set on buying one of these. But I have some questions.
I know this laptop has been out since the fall. But I'm wondering if I should buy it now from bestbuy (I live in the USA) or wait until the new processors come out in June or July. I would like the touchscreen but don't like the fact its glossy and it looks like after seeing the Microsoft listing...that's the only one that will have upgraded processor in the USA.
Do u guys think it will drop soon in the USA? Am i wrong to assume about the upgraded proccesor or will it stay the same until the new processors come out?
Thanks -

I'm getting 3hr 45mins max battery life wi fi browsing with screen at 60%. Do you think that's acceptable? Lots of reviews quote more like 6 hours under those conditions? It was posted earler but just to confirm before I order one, the Tom Bihn size 4Z Cache is the one I want?
http://http://www.tombihn.com/PROD/TB0350.html
Cheers -

Sorry, I posted the 4Z and that size is not correct. I will double confirm, but I believe it is the 1Z horizontal.
I love it! Will post back tomorrow. -

I have a problem that sometimes when on battery power, it doesn't detect the battery and switches every few seconds. As a side effect the laptop also wake up from standby..
 -

Hey guys n' gals!
So I just got my ASUS UX51vz in the mail today. I ordered it through a 3rd party distributor. They did a clean installation of windows 7 ultimate. I'm starting to notice two issues:
1. The function keys don't work (volume up/down/on/off, brightness for keys and screen etc.).
2. The external sub that came with it is not working! I'm pretty sure there is a driver that is needed, so I went to the asus support site and downloaded something called "ATKACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities" and it didn't really do anything (as far as I can tell).
Can someone enlighten me as to what is happening? I'm not necessarily tech-savy but I know my way around pretty well. I just want to get the function keys and sub working. Thanks!
p.s. Sorry if the answer has been mentioned in the thread already, I just didn't want to sift through 20 pages of replies for the answer. -

There is also a driver called "Keyboard Device Filter Utility". Did you try installing that one as well?
 -

 Thank you, it's appreciated.
 -

1. has anyone tried linux?
2. how the battery life (with win)?
The touch model have a minor battery life? -

Well over the last 3 weeks, the wifi on this has been pretty iffy.
1. When I turn on my computer, the wifi works.
2. After a few minutes, sometimes hours, the wifi disconnects.
3. I can't reconnect (windows cannot connect to the network)
4. I restart
5. Wifi works but then everything starts again.
This happens numerous times a day. Its not my internet/router (My other computers, iphone, ipad all stay connected). Does anyone else have this issue or know what I can do to fix it? -

Well you could try grabbing the latest drivers, worst case you can replace the card.
 -

OK So I checked the new wireless drivers and they haven't been updated so I have the latest ones.
I would like to contact Asus technical support but Im having trouble.
When I got the product (2013/01/16), I registered what I thought was the warranty, but I now think may just be accidental damage protection. The email I got back then has this subject "Thank you for registering your ASUS system!" and came from [email protected]. So I'm a bit confused...
I went on the asus site and it says I dont have an asus account. So I created one, and registered my laptop on that. But it says that to get the warrenty you have to register with 30 days of purchased, which have now passed. So what is going on?? How can I see my warrenty status? I dont see it on the website... -
I just downloaded it and rebooted but to no avail. I really don't know why they aren't working. Any more suggestions?
 -

Hmm.. is this a joke from ASUS or something? I didnt "register" my laptop and I expect to get 100% the support that my warranty gives me. Anyone knows more about this?
 -

Did you try the device manufacturer rather than the asus website? -

Hi guys! I'm going to buy U500VZ in 500GB HDD + 128GB SSD configuration. Please confirm two things:
1. Is this 500GB HDD a common 7mm drive with SATA interface and it can be replaced?
2. Is this 128GB SSD soldered on motherboard and can not be replaced?
Thank you in advance! -

Can you let me know where you intend to buy that from? So far I have been unable to find anywhere selling that configuration.
 -

Meaker@Sager Company Representative
They say on page 9 that it's a proprietary connector for the SSD.
 -

I've found it in my local shop (outside of US).
I know. That was about 256GB SSD configuration but what about 500GB HDD + 128GB SSD one? -

Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Same port.....
 -

Do you know if they sell online? I'm also outside the US but unable to find that configuration available online anywhere
 -

Meaker, my understanding is that the version with 128GB SSD soldered + 500GB HDD has a normal SATA connector for that 500GB sata. This has been proven by another forum member who opened the back panel and took a few shots of insides, thus confirming the standard SATA connector.

Also, to all the people having problems with wireless/keyboard/whatnot:
I strongly suggest that you make a backup of your initial installation of Win8 that came with your Asus, and then do A CLEAN REINSTALL of Windows 8. I heard about a quite a number of problems from people with Win8 that came with initial installation and Win7 downgrade. Besides - why downgrade to Win7? With a few tools like Classic Start and SkipMetroSuite, you can remove that "annoying start" and have the same thing as Win7, if you REALLY want it. But why fall to hype? Did you ACTUALLY try new Start? I am using it now over a month, and I can tell you - there's nothing wrong with it. It works. It's configurable, it's fast, and it doesn't hinder your productivity. I don't use other Metro Applications, I don't need them, and they don't get in my way. EVERYTHING can be configured to be just like Windows 7, and it works. Please people, at least give it 2 weeks and give yourself some time to do a bit of search, and then tell me you hate it.
Clean reinstall of Windows 8, and installing all required drivers found on Asus site, will give you functional FN keys for ALL actions.
I must say that only thing I don't really like on this notebook is keyboard - with my former notebook, HP 8510w I had beautiful time with typing, but on this model, I find that I often miss letters, or I am sure that I pressed something but the keyboard does not register it. I hope some BIOS update will fix this. -

I havent had the keyboard issue at all - in fact, Ive been doing some programming and report writing on it and it is a blast. It works absolutely amazing!
 -

Yeah, I am not sure if I should maybe report this to Asus or take it to official re-seller/repair shop...
 -
Since I bought my laptop from xotic, I don't have any way of installing windows 8. The reason I had windows 7 installed was because Wacom tablets have an insanely large number of compatibility problems with windows 8. Being an animator/artist/3D modeler I needed this wacom tablet, and I really loved the specs of the laptop. I'm still having issues with the function keys, however this is not horrible, just a mild annoyance.
But seriously, if anyone knows how I can fix this problem it would be greatly appreciated. I've downloaded all the drivers including the keyboard filter thing. The only thing I haven't downloaded was the bios update. I'm scared of that messing things up, but I will do that if it will fix my problem. -

Is one of hte DIMMS user replacable so one can upgrade on their own to 12GB (the USA model from the microsoft store comes with 8GB total, assuming 4GB soldered)? I had read in another thread some non-touch versions had 1 dimm accessable without prying open the case
 -

Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Yes one of them can be removed and you can put in a 8GB stick to have 12GB total. -

I have a question, if I open the laptop to clean from dust the warranty is voided? (because uses a layer of tape)
 -

It shouldn't be void. The memory is partially replacable as are the SSD modules (and battery) which indicates user replacements are expected. Routine maintenance such as cleaning are also required to keep the machine working well and that requires opening the backside. There's one thing inside that Asus claims* voids the warranty and that is removing a sticker to unscrew the processor heatsink. This indicates that they expect users to open up the machine as the sticker is invisible otherwise

(* I doubt it would hold in court if the work is done professionally. The sticker is however easy to remove and reuse if one is nervous) -

Hi guys,
hope helps me with this as the machine is completely unusable - switches to BIOS right after reset.
I formatted both 256GB SSDs when I was putting Fedora 18 on it, removing all the factory partitions on them.
I had no idea booting needs some of those partitions (EFI?) nowadays.
BIOS sees the disks only in Advanced/SATA Configuration, but my Boot tab looks like this:

And Boot Option when entered has only these 2 options:
- Atheros Boot Agent
- Disabled
but there is NO Intel RAID0SYS anymore !!
Also "Driver Option Priorities", "Add Boot Option" are not in the Boot tab.
I did not mess with flashing, my BIOS is ux51VZA 204.
As I cleared the disks fully, also the "Launch EFI Shell from filesystem device" does not work.
I can boot from USB, install Fedora 18 on disk (that also writes bootloader), but my BIOS Boot does not know about any SSDs and can't boot into anything!
Please help, I want to use this machine badly!
Thank you for any ideas,
Ksko -

Thanks for reply!
The problem now is a little different - when I change the SATA Controller Mode to IDE or AHCI, I can see second volume in the Boot tab which is good.
But, for some reason, Fedora 18 installer can't detect any of those drives for installation

Help!
Thanks, ksko
