    Help!

This is a newcomer, there are some problems for my UX51VZA,could somebody help me?many thanks!

    UX51VZA with BIOS 204

1.the fan always run, and I can't read the fan speed by any software like as speedfan or AIDA64,what's the reason?the BIOS 204 locked the fan speed sensor? or there is a damager for my computer?
and i used the NBFC(try all versions),it could not control the fan speed also....

2.how to recovey the system?when I press F9 it comes into windows8 optional interface but not asus recovey interface?

    Hi fossick_L,

The fan issue is a well discussed issue that plagues some UX51VZA models. I too am a new owner of the zenbook and have the same fan issue. There has been some success from other forum members with using Notebook FanControl (NBFC) program which modifies the embedded controller which in turn controls the fan speed.

I have had no luck getting nbfc to work on my zenbook and I'm hoping the wider community of owners who have been successful in getting nbfc to work can post their method.

Another member suggested trying linux but that's not really an option I want to take.

    hi all,

has anyone's webcam stopped working? Both lifeframe and win8 camera app can't detect the webcam and it is missing in device manager as well. I have read on other zenbook model forums where the webcam has stopped working and the only solution is to send the laptop in for warranty repair.

Could I have somehow disable it when trying to read and write to the EC using NBFC whilst trying to fix the fan noise issue?

    Hey guys,
I haven't read up on this issue in the forum, but I think I might have something to share about it. My UX51 model was getting very hot, very fast..and probably setting the fan off. I'm not sure if this is the same problem that we're discussing here, but maybe.

Anyway, when I opened up the laptop, I determined that the heatsink toward the center of the motherboard had popped up and was not in direct contact with the chip. The way it looks is that there are the two fans that connect to heatsink system. It comes to a tee and then ends on a lone heatsink that seems to have a slight hinge to it (not a real hinge) that allows it to pop up.

Anyway, I would push it back down and it would stick for a while. It's not using thermal compound, but some kind of loose thermal adhesive. After booting back up, it would be cool as a cucumber until it popped up again.....rinse and repeat.

Since this got annoying, I purchased some thermal adhesive pad, removed the old stuff and carefully inserted the thermal pad. That didn't stop the pop up, so I put in another thermal pad layer. That worked for a while, but eventually it popped up again.

    MY SOLUTION....
I was fed up, so I removed the heatsink assembly and bent the "hinge" downward to give it pressure in the right direction, still using the thermal adhesive pad. It worked like a charm and my machine stays cool.
DISCLAIMER: (a couple actually)..... When you remove the heat sink system, you have to reapply thermal compound to the respective chips, and there are like five of them. Two of them used actual compound (which I replaced with Arctic Silver 5). The rest had this strange thermal adhesive goo. With a Q-Tip and alcohol, I was able to recollect it into a little blob on each chip and reuse it.

MAJOR DISCLAIMER: In order to remove the heat sink assembly and fix the hinge issue, you have to remove a screw that voids your warranty. My warranty was already up, so I didn't care.

Don't blame me if you screw something up.

    hi all,

manage to get nbfc to partially work. I read in the nbfc forum that uninstalling Asus Power4Gear Hybrid software and McAfee antivirus worked for them. Well i did just that and it did work, somewhat.

you see, once the fan on my zenbook is spining at max, it won't stop even during restart i.e. installing updates etc until some BIOS configuration has been changed or by power cycling the zenbook. At cold boot when the fan hasn't start spinning at max, i can use nbfc to change the fan speed and it works, until that is the fan starts spinning at max. At this point, nbfc doesn't have any effect anymore.

I tried using the UX32LN profile (which has the CPU and GPU fan configuration) and that does not have any effect either once the fan has already started spinning at max.

the fan always run, and I can't read the fan speed by any software like as speedfan or AIDA64,but from other fourm,i found the fan spped can be read by aida64 with old bios version.

Why my computer can not do it?

the BIOS 204 locked the fan speed sensor? Old bios can but new bios can not?
anybody who can have a try?

or there is a hardware damager(fan or sensor or else) for my computer?

I saw the SATA adapter (without power) and I requested to Sintech to develope that NGFF (power included) version. I only sent them a mail and they were very kind and fast making it. I also ordered two of them (waiting for arrival) since my UX51VZ 1-year old already broke an ssd (sandisk version).
I was sure it would have been a good thing!
I think the NGFF adapter will be the best solution to use an other ssd brand (if it will be necessary I will look for Crucial M550).

    ;)
Nobody noticed a little un-glue-ing of the frame of the screen (touch-version)?

After reading the official nbfc forum, i'm convinced that my zenbook is faulty :(. Every ux51vz owner (except for one) who commented in the nbfc forum reported success with nbfc. I guess it's off to asus to get a rma quote... *yikes* it's going to be expensive.

Found another fault.... charging would stop randomly and the charging indicator starts blinking orange. When I try to shut down the pc, it would not power down and requires hard shutdown method to switch off. Once power-cycled, the charging then resumes normally.

I am using NBFC since I bought my UX51 and I have no problems with it. I use it 'out of the box': I installed it and activated the UX51 profile that is part of the package. When the latest update was available I installed it and it still works as expected. The UX51 is dead silent up to 60 °C of CPU temperature. Above that the fan starts to spin.

I am one of those lucky owners who has never heard the fan. Even my 21 yr old son has never heard it.

In the hundreds of posts here about fan noise, the only point that seemed to make sense to me was that some owners found their cpu heat sink was not tightly seated.

Bios updates, OS changes had hit or miss results. But reseating heat sinks appear to correct the problem.

Search through the thread for all of those posts. I'll have two years on mine in three months and still never hear the fan. My heat sinks were all tightly seated when I added memory, so I left them alone.

    Good luck!

I have a real life outside this forum.

    I own a UX51VZA with BIOS version 204.

    @Guilden_NL:
It could be a heatsink problem but mine stays silent with NBFC for light loads like internet browsing, CD to MP3 conversion and such in a room ambient temperature of 25 °C and only occasionally runs the CPU fan at all. Mostly when doing more intense stuff and gaming. CPU stays mostly at 55 °C without CPU fan and the fan only starts spinning over 60 °C. What NBFC can not control is the GPU fan. That seems to run on very low speed most of the time and is barely audible. As it is the same heatsink construction the GPU fan helps getting rid of the heat even without the CPU fan running.

    Heya,

A quick question, anybody knows how I can find a replacement DC jack for UX51vz. I tried the manufacturer's website (Foxconn), couldn't find the same series and checked stuff over the internet. Still no clue.

I managed to break it and I get a shorted motherboard at hand. DC jack is physically broken. The rest of MB looks intact.

    Hey everyone,

I have a question about the fan noise. I just received my laptop today and about an hour into using it, the right fan got extremely loud. I wasn't doing anything extensive, just browsing the web and installing updates. The noise was very different from what I expected. At first I thought it sounded almost like there was something inside the laptop that the fan was hitting while spinning. But I can't be sure because it could very well just be a very loud fan spinning at max power. Eventually it did stop, and for the next few hours it was more or less completely silent. However, it started up again later in the day, and again, it only lasted for maybe 5-10 minutes before it went silent.

I downloaded the Notebook Fan Control in the middle of the second incident, and at first it didn't seem to work, but after restarting the laptop, the loud fan continued on for maybe 5 seconds before it went silent. So I'm wondering if the fan control helped or not.

Anyway, thoughts? Am I worrying for nothing and this is how loud the fan usually gets at max power? Or should I send my laptop in to get fixed?

    Thanks.

I'm having trouble understanding the severity of this issue. I wish I could witness someone's computer acting this way. Right now I am browsing and doing normal things. The fan is running and I know because I can feel the vibration/movement, but the sound is not distracting to me.

I'm not professional computer guy, but I would ask you (and everyone else), is the laptop warm? Is the fan running even when the computer is cool? Or is the computer getting warm too fast, causing the fans to activate? If the computer is too warm, it probably isn't an issue with the fan, but the fact that the computer is running too hot too fast.

I had this issue, and I realized one of my heatsinks wasn't seated probably. It was popping up (the one toward the center of the motherboard (ends at the bottom of the "T" shaped heatsink system. Once I fixed that, my computer gets warm from time to time, but never hot.

If the fans are running, they're keeping my system cool. That's how I see it.

Well when it happened, the sound was loud enough to be irritating. It was certainly louder than a Mac under load. And it was only the right fan that makes the loud noise. At the moment, with the Notebook Fan Control on auto, my laptop hovers around 60C and is completely silent unless it passes that temp, which is when the fans kick in.

Yeah the laptop does get warm. Not hot, just warm. Before I downloaded the fan control, the fans were running constantly. I can't be sure if the right fan was making that noise because it needed to work harder as a result of the laptop getting too hot. I didn't think to check at the time.

I'll try to record the noise if it comes back again. For now it seems like the Notebook Fan Control has done the trick.

Update on my zenbook. It was brought in for repairs, the motherboard was replaced and the CPU fan was also replaced. This has fixed both the constant loud fan issue as well as the webcam issue. It's very quiet now, I can only hear the fan if I put my ears right next to the display hinge. Been installing Windows Updates and applications etc. and the fan has not once increased in speed to a point where I can hear from normal viewing distance.

So for anyone who is not having any luck with their zenbook, you could possibly try re-seating the heatsinks and applying good thermal paste. If that doesn't work it could mean a motherboard replacement. Good luck.

www.asusparts.eu have the DC jacks. I bought one just in case it would ever be needed and what I received looks 100% identical to the one soldered to my motherboard. Not that strange given that they are an Asus spare parts seller :)

That looks like the correct one to me!
Two pins on either side is through-hole and one is surface mounted - as seen on your picture two pins are mounted through-hole and the third pin is hidden on the other side on the motherboard.
The "face" of the connector is like the one I have laying beside me.
Electrode placement seems to equal the one I have too however that is using some guessing as your connector is missing a central plastic part.

In short: the picture is as far as I can tell a perfect match of the ausparts one.

I've used a very similar adapter + Samsung NGFF drive with great success but it required chopping off (Dremel ftw) about 1.5mm from the retaining screw base to fit it flush with the bottom if anyone else considers this approach.

Edit: I've also taped a small piece of anti-static film on the inside of the case to avoid shorting any connections on the drive by the aluminum since it's a bit taller than the regular drive at the connector end.

You can upgrade the RAM to probably any size that the form-factor can support but you will lose dual-channel memory support if the size does not exactly match the soldered size. Since you already have 4GB w/ 2GB soldered (non dual-channel), you should be able to upgrade to 10GB without any speed issues as far as I know.

I have a huge favor to ask of a fellow UX51VZ-US71T user! I bought a UX51VZ and updated from Windows 8 to 8.1, but I did not make a recovery drive before the update. Updating to 8.1 through the Windows Store wiped my recovery partition, so I am unable to refresh/reset my laptop. Would anyone with a UX51VZ-US71T be willing to send me a copy of their recovery drive? I would pay you handsomely and return the drive! My only other options are to ship the device to Asus for a $77+ re-installation of Windows 8 or buying another license of Windows. Any advice from the sage UX51VZ owners would be appreciated as well. Thank you!

    Hi Drew2828,

I updated to 8.1 and my recovery partition is still intact but untested so I'm not sure if I do a recovery whether I will go back to 8 or 8.1. Here is a screenshot of my disk management view.

Oddly I have 3 recovery partitions. Is this normal?

    Drew,
If you can get a copy of windows 8.0 media disk (or usb), you can do a clean install without paying for a new license. I downloaded a windows 8.0 ISO torrent file and turned the torrent into a USB install drive. The installation was clean and I the registration product code automatically worked because it seems to be in the bios somehow. I thought for sure I'd have to pay for a new code, but it activated automatically. The only thing is that you won't have all the ASUS software that came with the stock setup.

I think you can download the software at en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso (download torrent) - TPB
You're not actually stealing the program, because you legitimately have a license. The DVD itself isn't what we pay for....it's the license to activate the OS, which your computer already has in its BIOS.

You can make the usb bootable drive out of that ISO file with Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool. It works for Windows 8 too.

Hello everyone, since my UX51 is dead I thought I might make use of my two 256 SSDs which are perfectly operating. Question is, did anyone stumble upon an adapter that fits both SSDs and converts them to 2.5" SATA ?
All the ones I've found can only take a single ssd, so I would really appreciate it of anyone could lead me to a way that I can make use of my two SSDs so I could install them to my new laptop.

You need to think of them as single ssd's, like they are. If you have two bays, you can use two ssd's. That adapter should work to convert them each to SATA.

If they don't meet your needs, I imagine there is quite a market for them as they are proprietary. You can sell them and have more than enough to buy a 512gb SATA ssd....I would imagine.

Anyone run into any random file corruption issues on their machine? I'm having this problem and found a thread on the microsoft forums, but with no definitive solution. I'm hoping someone here has encountered the issue and beaten it to death. I'm in the process of backing up all of my files now and am ready to take whatever steps are next to fix. Thanks for your help, owners forum! :hi2:

    1. Run memory test ( www.memtest,org) to ensure memory integrity.
    2. Run HDD surface scan tool to ensure no bad sector exists.

Thanks Kevin! Just did both, but they came back clean. Since Mem and Chkdsk tests came back clean - must be a software issue?? One of the other guys with the same machine and problem said it was caused by software called Instant On by ASUS, but I deleted that long ago - so that's ruled out. Anything else I can test to find the issue before going through the hassle of reformatting my machine?

So H/W should be ok, I guess you can run CCleaner to clean up the system registry, but not sure how much it can do for you though.
Sorry, I am out of ideas now.

Hey guys, I have two questions. Can I delete the eSupport folder? I think it is in the recovery partition so I would assume I can get rid of it. Also, are the SSDs upgradable? I have the 256GB model and wonder if it is possible to upgrade to the 512GB instead.

    Thanks!

    Problem with HDMI out

RIG: Asus Zenbook U500VZ touch, intel i7 (2.20GHz), 64-bit, windows 8.1, 8 GB RAM; NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M w/4GB. Last available NVIDIA driver installed. My setup is pretty standard I guess, didn't touch anything except upgrading to win8.1 while win8 was installed when I got it.

PROBLEM: FullHD HDMI out is lagging when fullscreen picture is changed. The problem is constant, i.e. 100% reproduceable.

DESCRIPTION: Showing a slide show (powerpoint) in FullHD means waiting 15 seconds for the slide to appear on projectors (while the laptop screen has no lag whatsoever). Weird thing: If I flip through the slides, the second-to-last is pushed through the HDMI out, i.e. there is no 15 seconds delay - but it still is the wrong slide! (one off.) Seems like there is some kind of buffer which is pushed through when a new signal is sent. This happens with slideware, ppt and odp. Showing the desktop where only smaller parts of the screen change (showing an app in a window) works fine; the problem seems to apply to full-screen changes.

OCCURANCE: I can't say if I detected this problem after upgrading to win8.1 or after driver updates. I have had this machine for a year and never tested the HDMI out before a few months ago. The problem was immediately there. For all I know, it was like that straight from the factory, but it might have been a reaction to software/drivers installed too.

TESTING: I have used different projectors and different cables, same effect. Sometimes I got half of the screen updated (the upper part) fairly quickly and had to wait 10-15 seconds for the lower part of the slide to update on the projector. Which is even weirder. Using VGA through DVI-VGA adapter works fine but doesn't give me the resolution I need for teaching. I have not tested lesser resolutions on the HDMI port, nor CRT screens. My guess is that it is the communication between the grapics card and the HDMI out anyway, and not the peripherals. I haven't tested if sound starts without the graphics when the sound is embedded in the slide.

GOOGLE: I have found users complain about HDMI out on Zenbooks in 2013 and 2014 but there the whole HDMI wouldn't work, often due to bad cables and/or loose fitting. Their problem was solved by using physical adapters and better cables. This is not my case. I haven't found anything on my specific lag/push problem.

I hope this forum is the right place to ask for help. If not, please point me to a better place.
    Thanks for any input.
    - Daniel

Set HDMI display as primary display and try again.

Alright, I am getting really tired of my U500VZ.. I've had it for approximately 1,5 years.. I have a fan and heat problem with my laptop, but would really like to not having to send it with an RMA to ASUS, since I use my laptop every day for university. Here are the current temperatures for my laptop:

Which seems VERY high.. And the fan is currently on all the time, which creates a lot of noise (and is annoying to listen to during lectures, since it becomes so much more apparent..). I have tried updating my BIOS, with every single one of the updates on the ASUS site, but I can't update it since it either says that the updates are too old or not the correct?

What can I do about this?

    Model: UX51VZ-DH71
    Motherboard: 60-NWOMB1A01-B07
    WLED Screen: LP156WF4(SP)(B1)

    • Description of issue: Back light for LED Screen does not receive power.
    • What caused the issue: After fixing a no sound issue on the laptop, during reassembly, I mistakenly reconnected the battery, before reconnecting the inverter ribbon cable back to the inverter slot.
    • Notable occurrences: Corners of the inverter slot, and ports on the right sparked once. I immediately unplugged the battery, and took a break.
    • Functionality of product: Everything functions perfectly, aside from the Back Light.
    • Solution: I need help identifying the fuse, confirmation or relevant knowledge reviewed and fixed and any further information that anyone could provide. So I can then commence a chip-level repair.

    1. Data is still transmitted to inverter card, verified by shining a light into the screen, faint image then appears.
    2. The mini-VGA port on the side that sparked functions, and allows connectivity to an external monitor, which confirms the video controller is working. Everything is functioning, including the ports that sparked and test perfectly with a multimeter.
    3. Multimeter shows a fuse like object testing no continuity to the left of power supply, this could just be a capacitor, it looks identical to a fuse with no marking.
    4. Power supply can be traced (1) to the inverter slot, through capacitor -> four prong SMD fuse with O marking -> Inverter slot.
    5. The four prong object which I believe to be the SMD fuse for the inverter card power, registers .1 @ 200ohm reading and all other readings, unless I test the fuse using 1 prong per side of fuse diagonally, then registers 1. This could just be a four-prong power relay.
    6. Unable to find any identifiers for the fuse, that indicate the product number of the fuse or the rating.
    7. Unable to get support or any schematics from ASUS or abroad, as of yet.
    8. I have not solder balled anything, or attempted to bypass anything in fear of further damage or incorrect knowledge.
    9. I have identified the power fuse (F1) built on the inverter card and another (F2), both test continuity but F1 doesn't read at meter rating, it registers .2 but the F2 registers .1 as it should. I am not sure if this will nullify the need to have a fuse for the inverter on the motherboard? Please let me know.

I would greatly appreciate any support that could be provided, as my product is no longer under warranty and ASUS won't budge for any information. I can't afford to replace this specific motherboard, and I can't even find one that matches my specs or model number, I've even checked manufacture and export databases. As you can see, I have provided imagery of the board for further assistance in examining the product the last two images are of the screen inverter board. I could use further tips on correct testing.

    Thank you, - J.S.
Edit: The media manager won't let me consolidate all of the images under one media tab, but instead posts each image under it's own tab... My apologies for the space clogging.
