This crappy picture does not do the Flag Mod Ken@Gentechpc did for me justice. I showed some friends this thing and it blew their minds!!!!

Just got my G73JW, but after installing the drivers from the disk, the notebook booted into the bios screen--then immediately shut down. Now I can't even turn the notebook on, and there are not status lights even when the AC Adapter is plugged in.
So one day after receiving it...RMA.
GDI. -
Hey guys! I'm ordering my ASUS G73JW tomorrow! Didn't vouch for SSD because it was too expensive here in Australia. But I did get the SSH Drives as well as other goodies! So excited!
-
seems that u don't have lights in some keys?
-
I really need to invest in a good digital camera...the cell isn't cutting it. Every key is lit, its just the lousy pic I took. Kens video on youtube shows it better. Love the machine and the mod. Been playing Assassins Creed 2 for hours at a time and Gpu only hit 65c with everything maxed. Screen is beautiful and performance is great too.
-
I've been upgraded to Phase 2 tonight! Yay!
Kyle -
I'm unlucky.
Took delivery of one of these yesterday morning (well the wife signed for because I was at work).
Got home about 7pm, had it all out of the box and running by about 7.30pm and was overjoyed with it except that its performance didnt seem up to scratch.
About 10pm - just as I was starting to think about putting a stock Windows 7 Ultimate on it (although at the time I was playing L4D 2, and performance-wise, that at least was superb) and it blue-screened.
By the time I'd even taken in what was happening it was rebooting so I can't say what the faulting module was etc.
Since then it's dead.
With the AC adaptor plugged in. all the blue LED's will come on and if a DVD is in the drive, it'll spin but nothing else for a few moments. Then the fans kick in at what sounds like full speed then absolutely nothing else happens.
On battery (fully charged) it sometimes does the above but also it sometimes powers the LED's on for a second then powers straight back off.
BTOTEC have been brilliant about it (but are just as surprised as me about it, too).
Although they're happy for me to ship the whole thing back to them, I'm trying the ASUS service first as I'm in the UK.
I have to say that after waiting with anticipation a week for this, I was (and am) absolutely gutted about it, but these things happen.
And yeah, we've tried the usual suspects - remove and reseat the memory; remove and just put one chip back in; swap that single chip for one of the others etc.
Unless of course, anyone has any other suggestions? -
I'd rather be a little patient and get a brand new one than send something bad out of the box for repair... They might take a long time trying to figure out what's wrong with it anyways.
-
@Tony1044
What are the specs of your unit? did you get it customized?
I am interesting in getting one of these lappy's lil sis g53jw. I wonder when it is time for the new lappy to come out. Does anyone have an estimate date? -
One more question...
Did anyone try any of Linux distributions on this laptop. Does it play nice with Linux? -
Hey guys,
I'm a new proud owner of a G73JW!
And I'm completely in love with this thing. I just want to hug it to sleep lol. Anyway I've got a few questions that I find a little troubling and I was hoping you guys could help me with:
1) Does removing the battery (and leaving it plugged in of course) affect performance in any way? Because I heard certain brands limits your CPU performance when the battery is not plugged in (sorry if this is a huge lie, but I'm really a noob on these matters). I plan to use my G73 only at home, so portability/convenience is not an issue. Should I take the battery out?
2) Do you guys use the Asus mouse, and if so, do you guys use the Asus mouse software that comes with it? What are your opinions?
Thanks! -
1) I removed my battery since I don't play on taking it anywhere and as far as I have seen, nothing has changed except for the fact my laptop isn't a battery pack heavier. If you do, make sure to keep it 30-40% charged and keep it stored in a cool place.
2) G9x imo. -
sup guys...
The built in cam running about 2 or 3 frames a second is very annoying (for a 2 megapix cam)..any fixes?
Also, when I ran a bluray disk through HDMI it was fine.. but when I run embedded media through it, I'm getting a lot of tearing.
Any thoughts? -
Hey everyone,
Seems like a few people have recommended getting the NVIDIA 260.63 Beta drivers for the 460. However, on NVIDIA's website it says that the drivers are for desktop GPUs.. Is this any issue for the G73JW? Thanks. -
i've acually been wondering about apdated drivers as well.
-
The notebook drivers are not that easy to find: NVIDIA DRIVERS 260.63 BETA
-
Savantster, quite a few of us are dealing with that issue as well. We are still looking for a fix.
Please let us know if you figure it out -
Interesting that under the supported products it does not mention the 460 only the 480.
" GeForce 400M series:
GTX 480M"
These are ok to use? -
Yes--the 460M isn't listed, only the 480M. Is this an issue?
-
No issue here. Installed fine and got better scores in vantage.
-
I noticed there is an HD Audio driver in there as well, might be for the HDMI hardware? .. not sure exactly.. but it kind of hosed up my audio a tad (I couldn't hear the old man talking in Civ V after I updated the video driver). I downloaded and installed the Audio driver from Asus and that fixed the problem.
I'd be curious to know if that Beta driver is what's causing my HDMI tearing for online videos over HDMI.. I didn't run the stock drivers long enough to know

hey guys,
Amazon.com: ASUS G73JW-A1 Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop - Black: Computer & Accessories
i wanna get ASUS G73JW- XA1 (as opposed to G73JW- A1),it was mentioned earlier. i just want to confirm that:
1. it does not come with a bag or mouse, right?
2. it has 1x 750GB HD with ANOTHER empty hard drive slot
3. it does not come with BD drive
4. one year global instead of 2 year global warranty
anything else im missing?
id rather spend the $300 difference getting an SSD. Although i would not mind the bag and mouse and warranty.
on a side note, any recommendations for ssd in the g73?
if someone could answer this post ASAP as i have limited time to order! thanks you so much! -
1. yes
2. yes, but there is most likely no mounting bracket for a second hard drive there, you'll either have to use a ghetto solution like a lot of people here do or hunt down an overpriced bracket from asus.
3. yes, no blu ray drive, just a dvd/cd - read/write
4.from what ive seen of it on amazon it looks like its replaced with the 1 year warranty, and i dont know if it has the accidental damage for a year that the jwa1 has.
-
thanks for the quick reply. i ordered the A1. what's another $300
. im not getting an ssd anymore though. im already waaay over my budget. i will be reading this thread thoroughly before it reaches. need to see if my questions are answered.
thanks again! -
Now I've come to a crossroad....
XoticPC or GenTechPC....
Both are around the same price for all the part I've chosen.
Anyone order from either company that lives in Canada? Just curious to know a few rough ideas how long it takes to get there. -
I just got the G73JW yay! But I have a few niggles. One, when I'm on the desktop, there is a white square about in the middle. It doesn't appear anywhere else, only on the desktop. Also, the text is obscenely large most of the time. How can I fix this?
-
Hi everyone, I have been hearing about the NVIDIA driver 260 BETA for Asus G73JW's 460m GPU. I would like to install it, and I do know the link to it.
But I don't know what should I do to upgrade the GPU driver, do I just install it? Please help, I have never done this before and I don't want to break the computer. Thanks! -
Looking at getting the following upgrades:
- 2x 320 gb Seagate XT 7200 HDD
- IC Diamond Thermal Paste
- 8gb Memory-was 12gb (upon some investigation, Windows 7 Home only can see up to 8gb, so I will wait in getting 12gb until I get a better version of Win7)
- Blue backlit keyboard
- Wireless Ultimate-N (with the 3rd antennae)
Also, if purchased from XoticPC, the 7port USB hub is a very nice deal too.
Is it really worth upgrading the memory from 8gb to 12gb? And does the 320 Seagate XT harddrives really perform better than the stock 500gb? -
I had that white square show up once before, it went away when I either rebooted or put the computer to sleep however. As for the text, you can right click on your desktop > click screen resolution > click make text and other items larger or smaller and then you can adjust it from there. You can also use the pinch feature on the touchpad to adjust size of text and icons while you are on the desktop.
-
The XT HDDs do a miracle for boot times and applications. the 12GB is worth upgrading but I guess you would be better off with a CPU upgrade.
-
Also, I have four partitions on my HDD. I deleted them all except OS (C) and now I don't know how to extend to make one partition 1 TB! Please help!
-
Thanks, turns out rebooting worked lol silly me
-
In the Administrative tools section choose the "create and format hard disk partitions". Right clicking the different partitions will give you options.
-
Sorry for the delays replying guys - I _could_ RMA it without problem and Asus will try a 10 working day turnaround but since that's no different in real terms to having it replaced, I'll go for that.
Antaka - standard spec mate. No customisations. These are brand new models, and the only expected update I believe is the 3D version around December (slap me if I'm wrong).
-
Finally I found that the SSD is working fine.
What is making my laptop lockup and force to reboot is when I plug my external HDD (usb). Anybody else having that issue? Laptop crashed because of usb port? -
Any word on the SiBeam addon or was that scrapped?
-
Zengster,
Congrats on your new toy! I just ordered mine last week and I am hoping that it will play games efficiently and do all the things that I want to do. I upgraded to dual 500Gb Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid Hard Drives as well. That was an extra $260 to the build. I really hope I see a difference in performance for that kind of money. I wish ASUS had given the board RAID though. Doesn't make sense why they would make such a high-end gaming laptop and not offer RAID. Does anyone know why they chose not to do this? Maybe I am just missing something here. Anyway, I am excited and cannot wait to receive my new ASUS. I have a hard time with patience, but I was told that this PC is worth the wait, and that it's not the run of the mill everyday laptop.
I also had a few other upgrades performed to the computer. Like the IC Diamond Thermal Paste and wireless network card. I'm guessing that the paste won't do much seeing that the PC runs cool anyways, but I always like to make sure and would rather have someone at the shop put it on for me before I take it apart and mess something up. I usually build my own desktop computers and thought I would try a desktop replacement this time around. This is my first laptop purchase and the most expensive computer I have purchased. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a waste of money.
Anyways, do some tests on her and let us know how it goes and let us know how your games play.
Respectfully,
Kyle -
Zengster: Thanks for the tip.
Done some research on my own, it's a very nice harddrive with the size and the load times. I think I may get the 500gb version of it instead too. -
Here is what Justin W at Xoticpc responded to this question when I asked it...
"Thank you for your email.
Unfortunately theres no information thats been provided from Asus about the SiBeam technology. What I recommend doing is contacting Asus directly at 1-(888) 678-3688 (Option 3)." -
You uninstall the nvidia drivers from the control panel (don't uninstall anything else like physx). Restart the computer then install the new drivers. That's it.
By the way, these beta drivers have a new option that lets you do a clean install of nvidia drivers. I used that too. I'm guessing in the future, you do not have to uninstall the older drivers and just run the new drivers and let it do everything. -
Thanks very much! So the BETA driver offers a clean install? could I not delete the old driver and just install the new one and let it do a clean install instead?
-
I would like to ask which SSD would you recommend for this laptop and if it's worth to upgrade the wifi card.
-
IMO you should absolutely do a clean install of video drivers for every update. I normally uninstall everything Nvidia in the control panel then boot into safe mode and run a driver cleaner program like Driver Sweeper or Driver Cleaner..etc..etc... Boot back into normal mode and install the new drivers.
This is a first for Nvidia to offer a clean install option. Maybe it is sufficient to just run this option...but until I hear more on this I'm sticking to my old tried and true methods
-
Just an update on this bag. Mine arrived a little while ago. The JW fits snug but just fine, in fact it goes into this bag a little easier than it goes into the backpack it came with.
-
I bit the bullet and purchased an AUO screen. It should be here this week. Will post my impressions when it arrives. Does anyone know which notebooks are using the AUO 1080p screen?
-
Thanks
Also, with tests I have only played BFBC 2 so far and it runs it very smoothly. No stuttering at all. Everything advanced, blah blah. I haven't bothered with 3D Mark or stuff like that because it's everywhere on this thread so yeah lol Have fun with your new laptop!
-
Thanks for the update and i'll order mine now
-
Hi all,
Just received mine today...in fact, just fired it up. So far, it looks very cool.
Has anyone posted a 1st-boot checklist ie, how to check for dead pixels, which apps are useful/useless, where's the "Recovery DVD creation" routine, etc?
THX,
--PJ -
As you've already purchased the A1 this response isn't really applicable to your situation. Just pointing out the memory equipped on the XA1 is ~267mhz less, running at 1066.
At any rate congrats on the machine, the JW is proving to be a great successor. I'll be blitzing mine with benchmarks and everything I can find when I get it. Just waiting for my argument of practicality to outweigh the guilt of not overdoing the preparations for my impending first born.
-
You can check for dead pixels by going into paint, saving a blank white page at full resolution. Then find the file, open it in fullscreen and if the whole page is white without anything then you don't have a dead pixel. If there are imperfections then you might have a dead pixel. I guess your 1st boot checklist would involve removing some of the bloatware however you might opt to keep some of the software. It's really up to you to judge its usefulness or uselessness depending on your needs. The first time you turn on your computer you will get an option to create a recovery disk but this takes a long time so make sure you do this when you have a lot of time on your hands.
