I can confirm that I have the latest drivers already.
One of the hard drives is an SSD (Crucial M4), the other is a normal HDD. The SSD will get out of sleep if it's woken up within a few minutes, but the HDD locks up immediately. I've turned off the "power down hard drive after xx minutes" option on both installs to make sure that's not the issue.
I noticed last night that even when I do a normal shutdown, the power and discrete video card light stays on with a fan spinning. Completely unresponsive and requires holding down the power button for a few seconds or removing the battery. Something is definitely fishy...
-
I don't understand how you notice that the "HDD locks up immediately". I would strongly suggest testing your system without an SSD.
-
I can tell it locks up immediately with the normal HDD (i.e. spinning disc) because it will not wake up from sleep mode. With the SSD it needs to sleep for half an hour or so before it's unresponsive. Hibernate and hybrid sleep are both disabled.
-
The Nvidia graphics card makes it hard to come out of sleep mode, look at your incident report.
-
Thanks, but no incidents are getting logged
It must be freezing before it has a chance to write to the log.
-
I can't help but recommend contacting ASUS. They will probably tell you to reinstall to factory settings and hardware, so you can try that first in any case. If it fails again, you should be able to get a new system.
-
I posted pages back about what to turn off in Windows 7 regarding SSD's and their freezing. It works perfectly.
-
Yeah, this one is happening with both an SSD and HDD, so it's looking like some other hardware is broken.
I spoke to them Friday night and that's what they suggested. I took the conversation back to Xotic and after a few simpler ideas they've recommended the same. No dice though. Looks like it might be going back after all. Thanks all! -
I've had the sleep/freeze problem too. Sometimes, instead of not doing anything and requiring a reset it simply slows down, slowly...if that makes any sense. Almost as if it is in descent to freezing up, when eventually either it does or I reset. Any suggestions? Seems to happen normally when it comes out of sleep after folding it down for less than maybe 2 or 3 minutes.
Also let us know how your situation turns out, i'd be interested to know how you fix it. -
So guys, I'm going to be getting this laptop soon and I was going to be doing a little gaming on it. I am planning on getting it from amazon and purchasing an extra 4gigs of ram to bump it up to 8 gigs.
If any of you have the N53SV-XV1, have you tried to run BF3 on it yet? And if the answer is yes, how does it run on your machine?
And of course, I'm interested in plannin skyrim once that comes out. How do you think this machine would run BF3 and Skyrim? Thanks a lot guys. Ciao -
Can you fit a ssd and a normal hdd in the n53sv i5 laptop ?
-
Yes, but you need to take the optical drive out, and replace it with a caddy for your ssd/hdd.
-
Just a reminder: You'll want to purchase 8GB of ram. 99% of laptops come with no name/offbrand stock RAM. You don't want to add 4GB of name brand RAM with the stock 4GB RAM provided. They most likely won't work together well and it's best to just avoid mixing and matching, it's worth it in the long run. Pick up 8GB of RAM with it and just put the stock 4GB in a drawer for emergencies.
I play BF3 on consoles, so I can't answer this one. I do play NBA 2K12 and Sonic Generations on this though, and they both work flawlessly. BF3 and Skyrim should run, but you'd probably have to go medium settings. Anything higher probably won't work too well. Still quite playable -
Most annoying!!! Even 10.0.5.2 has this but there is a version 10.0.7.3 on station drivers and that seems to fix it.
-
That is a very good point, I just went ahead and bought all 16GB from Amazon because I didn't know if I would be able to get a perfect match later.
-
Nothing really interesting to report back except that Xotic PC is going to arrange the RMA through ASUS. I'll let you know what ASUS says when I get it back.
-
I've just bought my N53S and had exactly the same problem as you with my WD USB 3 drive. I updated to the latest driver from the Asus site but the problem remained. I eventually found newer drivers here:
FRESCO LOGIC
I installed ver 3.5.4.0 (26/10/11) and USB 3 speeds are up to 80-100MB /s with no drop outs, so far. Hope this helps.
Cheers,

How did you get Sonic Generations to work properly with Optimus? Was it simply a matter of having the most up-to-date NVIDIA drivers (I know a beta set was released a couple days ago)? -
My Nvidia drivers haven't changed since the ones that came with the laptop.
Sonic Generations NVIDIA Optimus Issue
There's a fix some people found. Basically you have to set up a duplicate screen (virtually, not physically), and the card will show up. You still don't select it, but it works. I can't get it to run smoothly on high or anything, but that's because it's obvious Sega coded this like crap. At least it works this way. -
Thank you so much for putting up the link for the Intel (R) Mgmt Engine Comp.! I didn't have to go searching for the OP. I had already downloaded all the recommended drivers, but saw later that the driver in this file is actually needed. Now I've got it and will start the wipe and installing W7 Pro tomorrow. Thank you.

Where did you get this keyboard dude?
I need one for my N53SV. It has a very flimsy and ugly one!
Thanks! -
Hello, I'm a N53SV A1 owner, but i'm a modder inside so i'm fine tuning my laptop.
for first I changed my HD with a 500gb Wd scorpio blue hd, in the near future i'll put it in caddy instead the dvd-rom as main hd i've ordered a 60gb ocz vertex 3.
then I changed my atheros wifi card, with a intel centrino 6230 wifi n + BT 3.0.
as "big work" I'm waiting for a matte full hd screen instead the poor 13** x 7**, some people few pages ago asked if this mod is possible... i'm not yet really sure but I also think there's non problem, I've already dismounted the old screen and i've takes some pictures of the "work"
At this pioint a question, i've noticed the really poor camera quality, I see on ebay lot of camera with same shape for asus laptops, someone knows ora have suggestion for a better one? maybe it doesn't work but doesn't cost toom much too, so maybe I can try to swap.
I'm thinking also to install a backlit keyboard, but i have to study a new way for the switch, I don't like the touch sensor, I will use the hole now covered by a cap of the tuner antenna, I have only to find the right microswitch.
sorry for my english guys ;-) -
Welcome elbolo,
I also own a N53SV A1 (which I like very much) please detail the improvements you experienced with the new 6230 wifi card and does bluetooth work?
Am looking forward to your pictures.

yeah, the screen is coming on tuesday, once rebuilt, pictures and impressions
-
Would really like to see pics of the screen work.
Also would like to know if it is possible to change the screen from glossy to matte? is it only the front cover or a whole switch of screen (already have fhd so don't need to upgrade it). -
Well Tuesday will be fine as mine is due back from Asus repair facility in CA. on Tuesday.
I upgraded my bios from 212 to 214, all went smoothly till reboot and it never recovered dead dead DEAD.. Sent in on RMA 11/7/11, I won't know what the fix was until I recieve it on 11/15/11, they did have to wait a day for parts (?) though.
I would like to know what bios yours has, as stated mine was shipped with 212. Worked fine but It is not listed on the Asus site. Does any one else have a 212 bios? Mine was originaly shipped in July/11 and carries serial # B6N0AS000169226
Any info on Bios212 will be appreciated. Where did it come from? Why is it not listed on ASUS Download for N53SV?
Dean -
I forgot to say that also mine has just went back from an Asus laboratory in italy, I sent in cause "sandy bridge bug"
new motherboard and bios 214
P.S.
this is the new screen:

great, elbolo!
Please let us know if everything (during the screen upgrade) will go smooth or not!
I am very much interested in doing that too!
thanks!

Little tutorial: How to remove and substitute the screen on our series N
I take non resposability for damage you may cause to your laptops
Lets start
Remove the 2 gummy caps on the lower side of the bezel
Now we have to take off the bezel, using a plastic tools or your nails pull gently, starting from inside
Ok, now we have to screw out al the 12 screw that fix... I don't know the english name (the long thin metal bands where the monitor is attached) to the metallic top cover.
PAY ATTENTION: better start from the lower side because the metallic cap will fall out so help yoursel with a hand when you unscrew the last 2
The screen is fixed with 8 little screw, 4 per side:
the 40 pin connector is non difficult to deatach, just pay attention with the original stron sellotape, lift it carefully
The cheap camera
ok, end of the first part, now we have to wait the arrival of the new matte full hd screen

At the moment I don't have problems with my atheros adapter but I don't have bluetooth and in 2011 it hurt me so much!
-
Well I also exchanged the atheros to Intel N6230.
Noticeable changes:
- Intel has 5GHz Wifi, Atheros lacked that option.
- Intel works up to 300mbps, Atheros was 150mbps
- Intel has nice Bluetooth 3.0 running mode notification, no idea what BT was in atheros
- Intel provides some nice WPA-Enterprise security profiles
- Intel has WiDi -
Thanks to both ankhazam and elbolo for the quick reply, now only hope they replace my MB with the new 214 Bios apparently the 212 bios was the fix on the early MB's that supposedly had the Intel i7 2nd generation update.
Elbolo did they ship your N53SV back from repair with your harddrive intact or did they zero it out with a recovery? (I did a backup just in case)!
Dean -
I've never used the original hd, i have mine 7200rpm hd with a clean installation of Seven.
for warranty reasons i sent it back with the original, and seems to be intact -
i mate, im having the exact same issue. have you had any luck fixing it yet? I've rang ASUS & Apple, both whom have said to uninstall itunes then install again. still didnt fix it :S its pretty annoying eh!
-
Hi everyone, can anybody help me with the below? cheers
I've had N53SV for a month now and most of the time it's been great.
When I open iTunes (or just open it from the tray when it's already running), and also in some other occassions, there is this strange clicking sound from somewhere around the disc drive every time. Not from the speakers but from the computer itself. Like it's checking the disc drive every time, or something....? Anyone know how I could get rid of the sound? Other than getting rid of iTunes, I mean :b -
Probably only noticing this due to dvd drive placement or the body of the laptop. iTunes checks for a disc when opening, I'm assuming, since you can either rip or burn music in iTunes itself. Does the same thing for me as well. Doesn't do it for programs that have no media component (Chrome, Word, etc). Does it for programs that may utilize the drive (Ripping programs, burning programs, etc). I don't know of a way to stop it, as I think it happens for any machine, just audible on this model. Doesn't bother me though.
-
Thank you elbolo for the tutorial! please let us know when you replaced the screen also posting some photos at fullhd resolution, when you will do it!
Thanks!

no worries, thanks for ur help

Just wondering, dose any one have problems with the camera of this laptops? min is so slow that I cant use it for a decent Skype or msn conversation! its frame rate is very very slow. and if i want to take a shot it takes it like 2 seconds later. i tried all the firmwares in ASUS website with no success. Can any one advise me on this. Thanks
-
elbolo, did you followed any guide in switching the WiFi card?
I've read in this thread that it was almost impossible to switch... -
Elbolo, thanks for taking this on and providing details on how to do it. Can you let us know what screen you purchased including model # or part #? This would be helpful to know what works. Once you post the second part of your 'How to', I'll be doing the same.
Thanks again.

not yet done, focused on lcd at the moment

but....
It doesn't work, or better it work but not in the right wayeverything is red, now i'm trying to understand why, my first thought is that the new screen needs it's own inverter

UPDATE: I sent some of the "red" pictures to the screen seller, asking if it can be a monitor problem... stay tuned :-D -
Sorry to hear that elbolo, sometime the answer is simpler than what we think, have you tried screwing with the advanced settings? Hertz and ...
-
advanced setting in bios?
-
This may be hidden somewhere in the thread, but what drivers are you guys using for your Intel Advanced N 6200?
I have the N53SV-B1 and I keep getting the Code 10 error in Win7 (cannot start device)
However, It works fine in linux.... -
Latest from intel.com site?
-
I had the same problem with a 6200 bought on eBay. That card is only for some computer manufacturers (HP, Dell, Lenovo/IBM for example) so it won't work on your ASUS laptop.
-
Have a N53SN that has been having stutter issues lately, almost as if the system is lagging. Seems to happen after I play League of Legends. After I'm done playing, I open a web browser, and the browser freezes up every once and awhile until it gets to the point where its freezing every other time I click. Restart fixes, trying to figure out why it does this?
Doesn't happen on any one specific site, I'm running Chrome, never have this problem aside from directly after I play LoL, though sometimes it pops up after I come out of sleep. Restarting browser doesn't seem to help. Good tech understanding so I've ruled out all the usual suspects. Any ideas?
Might be linked with the lag I get after coming out of sleep sometime... not sure -
Do you have an SSD or platter HDD? If SSD, there was a fix I posted here (I think you can click my username and search my posts that way). Try that, it fixes SSD freezing issues in Windows 7.
If platter HDD, is it overly hot after playing? Maybe you have an overheating issue or something.
