About turning on and off wifi and bt under win7.

I found the solution for me. I just installed the Wireless Console 3 Win7_64 from N56VZ. Now I can switch on and off wifi and bt by OSD. (Doesn't work with fn+f2 though)

For Power4Gear I also use the recent Power4GearHybrid_Win7_64_ver124 from N56VZ.

Hope this helps someone else too.

I doubt the ODD is using IDE. Check this out: 3D Blu Ray BD ROM Combo Player DVD RW Burner Drive for Asus N550 N550JV | eBay.
You can clearly see that the drive is using a SATA connector (not to mention it says so in the details).

Maybe someone here can confirm, but I don't think I've seen a laptop using IDE in a long time now, even for the ODD.

I only saw your post after posting my own, will read through them all before posting next time.

On another note, could anyone please tell me the original HDD model that comes with this laptop? I'm speaking about the 1TB configuration.

    It is this one: Amazon.com: HGST Travelstar 2.5-Inch 1TB 5400RPM SATA 6Gbps 8MB Cache Internal Hard Drive (0J22413) (HTS541010A9E680): Computers & Accessories

Has overall good user ratings on other sites too, so it seems to be a nice HDD.

Anyone else having an issue where when the computer starts up, it goes directly to the login and it fills it with a bunch of characters? Almost as if there is a stuck key?

This is on *every* startup too. With or without closing the lid

I should also ask... is there no recovery in this laptop? I was thinking about just copying the recovery partition over to the ssd and going from there, but there is no way to get into any sort of recovery that i know of...

damn this lap looks good on paper :

    GIGABYTE - Notebook & Netbook - Notebook & Netbook - P series - P35K

Full hd, 765M, thin, four drives configuration, huge 75Wh battery, dual fan cooling, stereo speakers on top and subwoofer etc...There's no pricepoint yet, should be more expensive than N550jv. Looks like the ultimate laptop.

Edit : seen it at £1,260.00, not cheap but still, it looks like a fine rig. I'll check on reviews by curiosity. Hope this will not hurt too much ;)

Any difference in fan behaviour with bios 206 ?

It annoys me that the fan is always on when i'm idling as low as 26°C. It's not noisy at all but it would be great if it simply turns off.

The recovery partitions are tricky, you can't do that, there's a recovery partition of 900MB at the beginning of the drive and another 20GB one that contains all the recovery data at the end of the drive...The only way is to clone the whole drive as it is via Easus Todo for example on your ssd. Believe me i tried everything else.

No difference in fan behaviour. As Morv already noted, the fan can reach its lowest speed while in BIOS, which leads me to believe they could at least set that speed as minimum in Windows too. I have little hope they will change that in the future though.

    This is really odd...

I get no "stuck key" errors when I start up, but as soon as a start up/wake from sleep/do anything that requires the login screen, it fills up with + signs, but the key isn't stuck at all.

As soon as I press another key, it stops. It doesn't matter which key, just any key stops it. I'll put the laptop to sleep, but it won't stay asleep as it will wake right back up and go straight to the login screen and fill the password box with a bunch of + signs. I've reset the laptop several times at this point, updated all drivers, updated the BIOS, windows updates.

I'm assuming this has to do with something hardware at this point? :-/

Does anyone else have any input on it?

ah nvm found it, just searched it on google lol then used the asus instant key utility to assign the shortcut I had created for all apps to the second button. actually it takes me to the search screen but oh well. guess it doesnt save a whole lot from just doing win+Q. I did pin it to the taskbar where start used to be tho.

Im planning on installing an intel 2230N, a Samsung 240 Pro 256G into the primary, and the factory 1TB hard drive into the ODD. If I just put my programs into the SSD and my media (documents, pictures, movies, etc...) into the hard drive, will the computer access the hard drive as frequently as if I were to have everything installed into the hard drive and have no SSD to begin with?

Just tried windows seven. Worked fine but Win 7 is nowhere close to Win 8 when it comes to battery life. I was idling at 18W (vs 11W in win8). So i'm back to win 8.

I'm sorry but I'm having some issues with this notebook.

First of all sometimes my device manager reports that my 750m has been disabled because it reported errors. I'm not sure how I fixed this the first time it happened, maybe a lucky system restore or a lucky boot., But it's happenning again. I tried disabling the device and re-enabling it, reeinstalling drivers using driver sweeper and installing a variety of nvidia drivers, nothing works.

The BIOS flashing utility from Asus does not work. It loads up the bios file, says the file is correct and when I hit flash it doesnt appear to be flashing or doing anything, then it says I must hit exit to auto reboot. I hit exit and nothing happens.

Fed up, I wanted to format and install windows 7 instead and lo and behold this laptop does not boot from the DVD. In fact, the BIOS locks in the HDD as the only boot device with no option to boot from anything else.

    I need some help.

Use the BIOS based utility to flash new bios versions, it is considered more reliable.

The BIOS contains options to set boot priority order and also set a one time boot from a scource containing boot code. For example, while the DVD or USB stick containing the OS kit is inserted, enter BIOS and select a one time boot from that drive.

I don't see how Win 7 can help your problem anyway: if it's a software problem then it can clearly be fixed since others don't have the same glitch; if it's hardware based then you're just wasting time.

Thanks for your reply. Indeed the OS based utility didnt seem to work properly for me. I'll give the BIOS based flashing in mind.

It didnt seem obvious to me that I could set a one time boot option in the BIOS. It looked like only the HDD was listed in the boot order list. I'll find some tutorial I guess.

I imagine it's somehow a software problem since it happened before and resolved itself after a particular system restore. I dont imagine something is broken on the hardware level so soon after buying it. Formatting is always a "low effort" solution for me to weed out software issues...and I prefer Win 7 anyways.

    Thanks :)

It definitely could be a hardware problem. Nvidia Optimus has huge issues with destroying the video card. Run a search on it or go to Nvidias support forums and see how big of a problem Optimus is and how long this has gone on for. In my opinion it is not ready for consumers. My theory is that when the drivers hiccup it sends a voltage spike to the graphics card that permanently damages it. It has happened to one of my laptops and it needed the mother board replaced since the graphics card somehow died on it. Mine started like yours, then progressed to blue screening the moment it was activated. Like I said, research showed me it is not an isolated problem and usually brought about by updating the drivers yourself or re-installing the OS.

And I agree that the UEFI bios is really damned annoying. I believe to select another boot device you have to find an option to unlock some kind of security so it can actually access the dvd drive at boot. I read that to install Windows 7 you first have to change from UEFI mode to legacy BIOS or some deal like that. I have stayed on Win 8 so far, so I am not familiar with the process. Just re-installing 8 after a failed partition re-sizing was enough of a hassle for me to not want to deal installing an OS yet another time. I still cannot get the Intel graphics GUI to open up without crashing no matter what version I try. It makes me scared the Optimus problem could pop up again.

What wireless card should I have put in by xotic pc?
Should the 6300 work fine with no issues?
I see one user is loving the 6235, should I use that instead? It's a tad cheaper, but if the 6300 will work with no issues rather well, i'd take it.

    Hey y'all,

So I've had my heart set on a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina for the last few months. Then I saw the N550JV. The specs are great, the build looks solid and the price is really decent.

I'd be using this machine to supplement the iMac at my full time job, video editing ( 3 - 10 minutes of dSLR 1080 footage, mostly straight cuts and some audio narration/music) as well as music production and performance (with Cubase and Ableton Live.)

A deal-breaker for me would be the DPC latency of the machine. It needs to constantly be in the green. If one of you happens to own the laptop, could I ask you to please run DPC Latency Checker and give a report back of the results? It really is a game changer for me.
I'm still leaning towards the MBP, but at the end of the day it is really expensive and the specs really aren't that insane. I use OSX at work, but I've grown up with Windows. Speaking of which, can Windows 8 be downgraded to 7 on this machine?

    Thanks!

I'm sorry but you're not making any sense: your theory is that a software related problem somehow translates into voltage spikes which is on the borderline to fiction. Of course one can find forum threads about Optimus problems since that is what they've been selling for the past couple of years. Hardware failure is just that, no need to invent scary myths. Again, if you have some kind of proof, present it. Otherwise please refer to your experience only and refrain from gratuitous extrapolation.

I do agree with you on the UEFI bios being annoying. My unit came without an OS installed, so i did not have to go through all the hassle of UEFI, Windows 8 hidden partitions, and locked down license key.

As a side note for who might consider buying notebooks without an OS preinstalled, for a small price difference you can also buy an OEM license of Win8. This is nothing new, the real news is that the license is transferable to other computers, so you're effectively buying an OS license which is not tied down to the notebook. The license is pretty clear on this, as quoted bellow:

At the time of purchase I did not have any choice on the matter (available units in my country came like this) but as I did my research i realized this might be a far better option, if available of course.

DPC Latency Checker does not accurately reflect DPC latency on Win 8. The following is quoted from the authours themselves.
I did have some DPC & Hardware interrupts issues with my unit, but as far as i know they were associated with the particular DVD-RW unit my notebook came with (either faulty unit or bad model entirely). Others on the forum with Bluray drives did not observe these issues. Other than that, after removing the ODD i did not observe any latency spikes and hardware interrupts are down to minimum.

You might want to research before choosing Win7 over Win8 for audio editing, for all I know Win 8 should have lower overall latencies. Opinions are mixed though, and my interest on the matter is rather superficial.

That Asus UEFI bios is a real pain in the as*. On my Lenovo, you just had to switch from UEFI to legacy mode and there you go. On the Asus bios, you have to disable secure boot, then enable "Launch CSM" and enable "Launch PXE opRom policy". And all my win7 isos weren't even recognised, only one did work because it was somehow UEFI compatible i guess. All that pain to finally discover that win8 is an overall better OS than win7 once you bring back the start menu via free softwares like Classic Shell, it's snappier and better for battery life. There are some stuff that annoyed me at first on win8 but once you tweak it a little, you can make it exactly look like win7. Once you're satisfied with the settings go make a disk image and there you go, no more pain if the system crash (Which i doubt cause win8 is basically undestroyable) or if you swap disk.

Thanks a ton. Have you noticed any issues with audio crackling/distorting at all? When performing, all my audio goes through an external audio interface but I'm afraid that may introduce issues. My current POS Compaq laptop is unusable for audio work because as soon as I introduce an external interface into the mix, all the audio that gets outputted is horribly distorted. Something to do with IRQ addresses not being able to be prioritised or something. One of the things that attracts me to the Mac is the fact that from what I've heard, everything just works straight out of the box.

Edit: Never used W8, heard so many bad things about it. Is the criticism mostly unfounded or are there serious issues with the OS that would make me strongly consider either downgrading to W7, or if not possible, passing up on this particular machine?

Criticism about Windows 8 is mostly about the interface and not about the OS itself.
As the interface is changeable to a mostly-Windows-7-like one I don't see any reason to switch back to Windows 7.
I use StartIsBack to get my Startmenu back, it costs 3$ for 2 licenses but there are free solutions which I simply don't like, too.

Do you know if it is possible to get the drive facade as a replacement part from somewhere? I want to mod that part a bit but I don't want to destroy the original one so i'd really like to buy an exact copy from Asus.

You mention extending battery life a lot in this thread. What programs/modifications do you use so far?
    AFAIK:

Switching out the wireless card to a 2230N (?)
    Undervolting with XTU
Switiching to one stick of ram (although apparently not that much difference in Watts used)
Classic Shell? Does this help with battery life a lot? Or is it just mostly for the UI changes?

    Hi,

After asking for your recommendations, I just bought na Asus N550jv-DB72t. It looks like reaaly nice, but I have a few problems:

    (1) Using the laptop just for internet makes the temperature oscillate between 80-95 degrees (according to Real Temp GT software). Is this normal?

    (2) I tried to play LOL, but it is really hard even with low configuration, because the fps oscillates a lot (between 10-30 fps). Why that is happening May it be caussed by the high temperature?

    Thanks in advance.

    Basically

-2230N wifi card, for some reason the Atheros wifi card consumes 4-5W more. Any basic intel wifi card should do better.
-100mV cpu voltage in XTU and -100mV on intel igp (don't know if it helps a lot). You can also put cpu multipliers as you want but it doesn't make a difference imo, it is more to contain temps. Also i put maximum battery life on intel HD panel control, don't know if it really matters too.
-SSD, preferably an efficient one like samsung 840 evo or pro as they idle as low as 0,3W.
-One 8GB stick of ram instead of two shaves only 0,5-1W at idle but up to 6-8 W at full load for same perfs. Overall it's peanuts but as soon as you approach the 10W idling, it becomes an interesting percentage (5-10%).
-Ad Block Plus and Ad Blocker Firefox plugins cause animated ads will drain your battery when web browsing.
-VLC seems to use 1-2W less than media player classic for videos/mkv.
-Win8 is better for battery life than Win7.

That's pretty much all you can do. Just swapping the wifi card and putting a ssd should give u a solid battery life already.

Classic shell is not for battery life, it's just for getting rid of Metro interface and bring back the start menu.

I had the same problem too first I flashed the bios from the bios using the Easy BIOS option with the 206 update. Then I uninstalled all the previous drivers from nvidia, also try using CCleaner or something to sweep the registry entries. Then to be safe I installed the drivers that came preinstalled which were 311.54. That worked. So I went ahead and removed that and installed 320.49 which does improve performance by like 10%. I tried the beta drivers but they would install so im not sure if that will work for you. But I had the same problem so I hope it works out for you as well.
