My n550jv is behaving strange on power-on. When it's completely off and I press the power button, it'll turn on for 2 seconds or so...then turn off again. On the second try, it always turns on and boots up very fast. I tried removing the hdd caddy on the optical slot (and I have no problem with it shutting down or going to sleep anyway...)

Anybody experience this? I tried searching for this but I haven't seen anybody with this problem yet.

I tried resetting the BIOS to default...etc

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

Bought this laptop the other day and updated everything. I think. I upgraded to 8.1 and now it won't sleep. When I try, I get a black screen, fans on, and nothing changes. Only way to fix is to force-shut it down or wait 10 minutes (I think it just gives up and shuts it down). Anyone know what drivers (presumably) would be causing this? A couple ideas:

-Getting hung up on a driver and it's not able to stop it

    -Something with the hybrid sleep/hibernate

    -VGA card

    -Hard drive partitions

    Anyone know?

This happens to me randomly sometimes. To sleep, I close the lid, but sometimes it doesn't go to sleep so what I do is reopen the lid and close it again. Usually this works, but when it doesn't I wait for about a minute or two and it finally sleeps. I have had to force-shut-down it once or twice when if just didn't sleep after a couple minutes.

Hahaha! I did the same thing the first day I bought it...I tweaked the jack getting it in--I hope it doesn't break prematurely.

I merged your crosspost back in here.

This could be the symptom of a hardware problem, is your fan running normally when it boots? Does it do the same thing if you take out the battery and use only AC power?

No--Still had the old ones so I updated them. No change. Restarts, hibernation, and sleep still take forever or just never happen. I also updated the Intel graphics and the RealTek LAN (I think) drivers. Everything SAYS it's up to date...when I start the Asus Install program it says that my drivers are not compatible with the hardware and won't open (yes, that program is buggy but it still worries me) Help! D: I might as well call Asus here pretty soon.

Fan runs fine. I tried it with almost all of the components missing/replaced (original 8GB RAM, new 16GB RAM, optical bay HDD, no optical bay, optical drive in, battery, no battery)

When it's off and I turn it on, it turns on for 1-2 seconds...then turns off. No beeps. Turn it on again, and it's fine.

@jellycow When did it start doing that? What led up to it?

Have you taken it apart at all? If you have, try reseating the connectors that you may have touched.

I think I got this figured out.

I went to Asus' site and reinstalled all the drivers for 8.1, which fixed my restart problem.

I also figured out that Power-on-then-off is caused by Win 8.1's Fast Startup. I turned that off and computer has no problem turning on on the first try. I've searched various forums and it seems like there is some finger-pointing between ASUS and Micrsoft on issues with 8.1 I hope they sort it out soon enough.

    Hi,
is there a solution for the "Еrror 43" problem? (Windows has disabled this device, because it has reported problems.) I`am getting this with bios 206.
The system just freezes and I have to shut it down.

You should probably flash BIOS 207 onto it.

EDIT: Here's some things I found in the Event Viewer surrounding a failed sleep attempt. I have no idea if they're related.
    -Immersive Shell corrupted
    -Duplicate log entries
-NvStreamSvc description (Event ID 03) cannot be found
-Winlogon unavailable to handle a notification event
-Registry still in use by some files
    -Intel ME Service problems
-Smart Card Service came up once or twice
-Svchost came up in about a dozen entries from the time I slept it to the time I started it back up (12 minutes of unresponsiveness)

Lemme know if this helps with finding the problem.

    Hello!

New user here, I got the N550JV (with touch /FHD and all that jazz) last week, but i have some problems getting it to shut down and reboot properly, and especially starting it back up without force shutting it down 1-2 times first ( pressing the power button for 5 seconds).

Is this a common issue, or should i return it?

I see some other people over here having similar issues, but im wondering how common it is?

    Thanks.

How exactly is it behaving? Is it freezing? Is it not responding to button presses? It all makes a difference to what may be causing the issue.

Its only during shutdown and bootup (or restart), just seems like it "hangs". It wont shut down properly and sometimes wont start back up cleanly. And i will have to use force shutdown to get into windows. If i had to guess, it has to do with some sleep feature or fast bootup feature ( the SHE engine or whatever its called).

I've just recovered a working acronis backup of my system with the penultimate nvidia graphics drivers, just updated (via Win Update) to the latest nvidia and voilà my note doesn't shutdown properly anymore (button light always on - i've to press for 4-5 secs to stop the pc).
Now i'm pretty sure that the latest nvidia drivers cause this behaviour. :hi2:

Yeah im currently doing a full system recovery. So we'll see how it plays out.

Might do a clean Windows 8 image install if this doesnt work out.

Have you tried downgrading the drivers?

    1. Have you made any hardware upgrades?

    2. Did you replace the optical drive with a tray for a second hard drive? Some of the trays that are wired improperly can prevent your computer from shutting down correctly.

    3. Did you upgrade to Windows 8.1? That was my problem. I had to do all kinds of driver update (or re-installs) for it to restart correctly.

    4. I'm almost 99% sure it was my NVidia driver that was causing my fast-start problem where it will start...then shut down and I had to turn it on again. I didn't get a chance to figure out exactly which version of the Nvidia driver is the good one. All I know is that there were a good amount of complain about it on the Eventlog.

Ok, thanks for the suggestions everyone. But i think I've managed to figure it out.

    What i did:

Reinstalled Windows 8 from the recovery drive.

    Upgraded to Windows 8.1

Installed all available driver and bios update from the N550JV support page (Windows 8.1 drivers)

Made a Restore point in Windows.

Downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers, did upgrade w/ Geforce Experience. (upgraded from 331.65 -> 331.82)

    Problems started.

Tried shutting down and rebooting a few times, many problems were had.

Tried forcing the PC to use the Nvidia GPU when starting GeForce Experience instead of the Intel one (which was default), no difference except GeForce Experience started much faster ( also , why isnt this default?)

I did a system restore to pre-Nvidia update, PC seemed to be fine again, tried several shutdowns and reboots.

Installed the 331.82 Nvidia drivers again, but this time I didnt install GeForce Experience.

I've done 2 reboots and 1 shutdown, no issues.

So the problems seems to lie with the GeForce experience software, at least for me, and at least so far. I suspect this may be because the N550JV has both a Nvidia HD4600 and a GT 750M, something goes wrong here. When Super Hybrid Engine II does its shutdown thing.

So if anyone has any connections at Nvidia, let them know ;)

    Jellycow:

My pc is 100% stock hardware.

    Edit:

I've made a thread on Nvidias Experience support forum, incase anyone wants to join in:

If i'm not wrong updating them to the latest vers. via "Windows Update" i didn't get the G. Experince thing, but only the power off issue

My working-fine nvidia drivers are vers. 9.18.13.2702 ... They will stay there for a long time.

Yeah, think I'll do another reset and try to stick with those drivers too, if it has worked for you over time that is.

The amount of testing I've done has left so much garbage around the filesystem, probably easier to just do another recovery, heh.

i have to say guys, when i saw the specs on this laptop i thought why would anybody buy anything else...but after owning for 3 days i went running back to the store to return it, its loaded with flues..the track pad is worthless...missing half my taps and gestures, and the full hd screen matte....the movies looked all dark and bad, the wifi signel is bad, sound is bad and the worst thing is after i updated to the windows 8.1, it would take like 10 min for it to shutdown or restart, and yes i updated all the drivers from the time i bought it tell is send it back....
i have to say it was a reaaaaaaal disappointment for me...

Awesome, was using the laptop today, closed it for a minute, and once i opened it back up, it doesn't boot back up anymore.

This is rather terrible, considering i have had the laptop for only a couple of months :(

Question about sharp edges. On mine, the sharp edges are at the bottom of the silver band that runs around the notebook. The edges on the short sides are sharp, but on the front and back the bottom fits better and the edges are not sharp. This computer has been opened up twice. I am wondering if a new computer that has not been opened up has the sharp edges. The theory being that maybe when you put the bottom back on you have to somehow stretch out the sides to extend over the sharp edges. Could someone who has a notebook that has not been opened up report if their notebook has the sharp edges? Thanks.

I have not opened up my laptop. The edge is flush on the right front of the laptop, and it's the sharpest on the right side near the disk drive. I'm not sure if you could sand this down or something, but I don't think that would affect its performance.

As for all the sleep and restart problems, I fixed mine by only installing the Nvidia driver on the ASUS site--have not tried the one on the Nvidia site since it's working fine.

Also--try putting the computer in Airplane Mode, then closing the lid/sleeping it and see if that fixes it.

I think the most annoying thing is that this laptop is juuuust a little bigger than a Macbook 15", rendering many awesome sleeves useless because they don't fit. I'm ordering an Incase Terra 15 sleeve for $13.99 with Prime. If it fits, it'll be so nice. I LOVE the Terra case.Something about that lovely sleeping-bag orange design on the inside and the YKK zippers...all for less than 15 bucks. Wow. I REALLY hope it fits.

Well, I'm still having problems. It sleeps fine--until I unplug it. If it's sleeping when I unplug it, it shuts off immediately. If I try to sleep it when it's already unplugged, it won't work. :(

Interesting thread, but it's so long it's hard to find the information i need. I kind of wish the pre-purchase/review content was in a separate thread from the owners' conversation.

Anyway, i recently got one of these fine machines and i'm wondering if there's any way i can swap it so that by default the F1-F12 keys perform their alternate function (volume adjust, etc) and I have to press "fn+[key]" in order to input a regular F-key operation. Does that make sense? I'm not sure of the best way to phrase it. Anyway, I much more often adjust screen brightness or volume than use the F keys, so i'd prefer to be able to adjust the volume one-handed. I searched and found something about fn+num lk but it didn't do anything for me.

THanks for all the great info so far. I've read the first 20 pages but still have a long way to go in this thread.

Windows 8.1 or drivers for 8.1 have made the laptop pretty slow and buggy.

Could anyone please guide me how to do a Clean WIndows 8 install ?

The easiest way would be to use the built in system restore. Turn off the computer, turn it back on and continually press F9 which will get you into that console. Follow the instructions and once you're all done you should be good to go.

    9.18.13.3165.

It seems to be working better after it updated the Nvidia driver--but every once in a while I also have problems with the WiFi card cutting out.

I was using partition manager to resize my drives and after restart the system didn't boot. It messed up the partitions I think (including the C:\ boot drive).

Then I clean installed Windows 8 Pro, now the system is hung on either loading screen after Windows login password prompt or after that blank black screen only. Ctrl+Alt+Delete works but show blank black screen after that.

I have re-installed Win 8 now couple of times now, still same problem. The first time Windows boot well to desktop, works fine, but after restart, same problem I mentioned above. Asus restore is not working now, asks for installation media. Windows work well in safe mode.

Any idea what could be the problem ?
