Yes, you can reflash BIOS even if you're on the latest version. Yes, it will always fix the code 43 issue. Just launch

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\WinFlash\WinFlash.exe" /nodate

I am running Windows 8.1 with nvidia drivers from Windows update for months now without code 43. If you cannot get the winupdate drivers, I would definitely recommend installing the ones from Asus support page, I've never had code 43 with them either. But I had it for a couple of times when using the drivers from nvidia.com.

Hehe... happy to help. I have all the pages with the fixes for all the problems on this laptop bookmarked in my browser as I was planning to buy it.

Now i'm torn between this one, the n56jr and the newly announced lenovo y40

Do you own the n550jv or the n56jr?
The info I have posted is on the n56JR.. just to be sure we're not talking about different machines.

Just got myself the N550JV on Monday and put windows 7 on it (I cannot stand 8/8.1 on a PC). Everything was fine with it till this morning. I let it do some updates overnight (was like 25 updates or something... all for Word and such). Now today, my scrolling feels very jumpy. I think its the smooth scrolling or something but I can't find any solutions. When I first start scrolling, it jumps part of the page/document. Almost as if I quickly tried scrolling, even though I barely scrolled at all. This has only been happening with my trackpad also, my mouse is fine. Any solutions? I have the 1.0.35 update for Smart Gesture installed but still nothing.

    Thanks

    n550jv

    Try opening regedit at:

    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-82733492-2428873318-3087640579-1001\Software\Elantech\SmartPad

You can edit a lot of settings there (for example, I have set a two finger tap to the middle click and three finger tap to the right click), but if you are interested in lovering the scrolling speed look at the sc_speed. You can set it in range from 0 to 4.

For your guys who have switched to intel wireless card, have any of you tried widi? I am trying to invest a widi adapter but not sure whether it will work as this laptop is not widi certified.

You can try updating the bios yes, you could try disabling the device in safe mode.

Also does anyone has a solution to a wi-fi problem? The connection to the router seems active but internet connection does not work. Tried all the tips from asus site, none worked. Also, router itself is not the problem.

Well I still could get it to work. I chatted with tech support. They walked me though the steps to run the recovery. As soon as we got to the part where windows asked for a disk they said I was going to have to send my laptop in.

Do you think I should? Or should I just get a copy of windows and reinstall? Would I be able to use the CD key on this laptop? I know that when I had a Lenovo they made there windows very special. I tried a clean install and the laptop didn't even get close to the battery life it was getting or the performance. Many other commented on this and we all went back to the Lenovo version.

I have another problem, I have the atheros ar9485wb eg and I'm only connecting at 72mbps is this normal?

Also I hate this track pad. It take far too much pressure to click. I like to use my thumb to click and my finger to move round. What end up happening because of the pressure required for clicking my thumb will slightly move as I apply pressure causing the mouse to move as I'm trying to click. And I don't like the 2 finger scroll I like just moving up and down on the right edge of the track pad like many other laptops do.

wifi: Mine always connects at 150mb.

trackpad: Why don't you click by simply tapping then?

Why not have a software solution, called "lazy thumbs" telling the track pad to ignore input from the clickable area of the track pad. They must of seen this has a problem because I did update the track pad software and it did improve but it's not fix.

I am forced to use taping and I don't like it its not as fast as using a thumb and a finger.

I am also disappointed by the throttling, I read reviews where they said it wouldn't be an issue. Well its not an issue until you play some games. Although I found I could set the power mode to balanced and it went away.

    Too cold winter ???
    Sorry. I couldn't resist :D

Your problem could be related to nvidia drivers or BIOS. Update both of them.

    EDIT
I forgot to mention the intel chipset drivers that require to be installed prior of all with admin rights

    ;)

Dude if you would have read more then the last 2 or 3 pages of this post you would have found the fix for the throttling.
Use throttlestop or throttle toggle and voila.. no more throttling. Ad notebookfancontrol to that and use their n550 profile and your temps will be in the clear at all times

I tried it out and I was still getting some part in LOL that I was going from 60fps to getting slammed down to 15-15 for about 3 seconds and then it would recover. Im not sure whats going on I wonder if the graphics card is throttling some how.

I do hear the fans getting much loader then before and I lowered the critical stage to 72 in order to start cooling sooner to avoid spikes. My temps are now maxing at 74-76c.

    Ok troubleshooting time:

1 Are you plugged in...playing on baterry can severely cramp your style?
2 Are you sure you are using throttlestop or throttle toggle properly..they need to be activated on every startup?
3 have you tried anything other than LOL an does it also throttle there?

70-76 degrees does not a throttling gpu make

If all else fails set the cpu to 99% thus disabling the turbo and test it like that.

As a last option you can do a repaste on the gpu and cpu

The intel is a very good wireless card.
The caddy looks ok..now you only have to hope that it's not creating any DPC Interrupts

I managed to fix it by using the win 8 drivers (which work completely fine) and reinstalling Chrome since it was part of the issue for some reason....

Now my only problem is that my touchpad is a bit jumpy. Like when I touch the pad, the mouse moves over like a centimeter or so... very weird and makes it hard to use the touchpad to select things. Any clue why this might be the cause? I tried reinstalling the drivers but that did not really help.... its not the entire touchpad that is like this for some reason also, and the jumpy parts of the touchpad seem to shift around...

Also, my monitor seems to still be seen as a "Generic PnP Monitor" and not sure how to fix that. Not to mention I have a ton of HID devices that I'm not sure how to remove.... http://puu.sh/6iQQZ.png

What's wrong with a "Generic PnP Monitor"? I have it too.

The ton of HID devices is probably the cause of your messed touchpad. I would try remove them all and install the driver from scratch.
BTW, without any external mouse I have just 2 HID devices.

The fan is always on by default. This is OS independent. You can use NBFC to turn it off when there are no intensive tasks.

So the scrolling speed messed up again after chrome messed up for me. It crashed and apparently now it is using the Chrome OS scroll bar and has been causing errors for a lot of people. I also noticed that I'm using the Asus Smart Gesture program and not the Elantech Smartpad program. Should I switch over the programs?

EDIT: to clarify, apparently it "updated" to the new scrollbar. IDK why this would cause the scrolling problems though =/ In a long text file, if i put two fingers on the touchpad and then try to scroll down a bit, it would jump down 12 lines or so when i try to scroll, but then it will do the default 3 lines afterwards... Its such a weird error and i'm not sure what to do

One user reported that he still had the insulation rubber on his gpu and the thermal paste applied on top of that .

He was experiencing similar behaviour to yours.
You can remove the heatsink assembly yourself and have a look or you can send it in to warranty.

If you di remove the heatsink you will need to repaste even if this is not the issue.
If you are not technically inclined you should not try this.

similar thing happened to me. Twice. First time used Windows recovery image to usb external hard drive. restored to SSD. Bios screen 90% of time. rarely did it load correctly. Then tried clone with Macrium Reflect. Wala, same problem. don't know if something can be changed in Bios or how to do it. when the ssd boot works the system is night and day quicker. Hope some one knows how to work around the problem. Hate to return to the very slow HDD.

I bought a caddy on Ebay for my N550JV to add another hard drive to it, but my N550JV arrived damaged and I returned it and went with another computer. I have no need for the caddy and wanted to see if any N550JV users in the USA wanted it? I have never used it.

Just pay shipping (should be less than $5 to ship by first class). It looks like this. Just send me a private message.

    This is what happened to me;
Hey, when i updated to win 8.1 i found out that i couldn't restore/recover my computer.
Around the same time when i turn my pc on, and log ind, there came a blue screen where it says wait a moment, and i'll say that forever, when i then tried to restore/recover my computer, it says need media installation/recovery file.
I then used my sisters computer recovery file and it worked, except now it thinks it's a packard bell laptop, and i dont want that. So i'm asking if it's possible to get asus n550jv backup/restore file from you guys?

Ended up getting this one. Amazon.com: Protronix SATA Optical Bay 2nd Hard Drive Caddy, Universal for 9.5mm CD / DVD Drive Slot (for SSD and HDD): Computers & Accessories
Looks pretty nice and it even came with a screw driver. Looks pretty nice, hope it works out.

Intel card seems to be working really well, about 18-22 megabytes a second connected at 300mbs in the same room as the N router.

    1. Not on battery
    2.Ya I am
    3. Dont really play any other games, I used to love BF but BF3 and BF4 IMO just arent as fun. I miss 2142 so badly....

Hmm I may try repasting but don't really want to mess anything up though.

I was able to get it to go away if I capped it at 2.9ghz and lowered the character detail to high.

I have to say when this laptop is in its asus high power on battery I find it pretty frustrating to use. Slamming the cpu down to 800mhz is just crazy. It makes youtube videos stutter and mouse input lag.

I say RMA it if you are having constant problems with it.

I think I bought your laptop. Did it have dents on the lid?

I experience ghost input of the keys Enter and Backspace and this is annoying as I am coding with this device. Do you think the keyboard cable fix will help me? coercitiv only wrote about non-functioning keys but not about self-triggering keys and I don't want to open it again for nothing.
