    Hi everyone,

I am a recent owner of the N550JK model and have encountered an issue that has been bothering me since the initial purchase. I noticed that recently two other people have mentioned this issue in this thread, albeit with no solution to it. It has to do with audio, where after start up or returning from a lengthy sleep at low volume, the laptop initially has no sound. To enable the sound, I must manually increase the volume until suddenly the audio decides to turn itself on. I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue, as I have the latest Realtek audio drivers installed from the ASUS website. Moreover, the speakers make a very subtle "pop" sound when the laptop is turned off or put into sleep mode, though I'm not sure whether this is related to the previous issue. I would be very grateful if someone were to help me on this, also because apparently I'm not alone on this issue.

    Thanks :)

Hey guys, I just got the Dell P2715Q to use with my N550JV. It's connected to it via miniDP-DP (SST). The monitor is a 4K monitor running at 60Hz. I'm noticing that some apps seem to have a sort of lag to them, especially chrome (and Brackets). With Chrome, opening tabs isn't that smooth (the new tab animation isn't as smooth as on the laptop screen). I don't know what to make of it.

Also, 4K youtube videos stutter hard in Firefox and Chrome, but play flawlessly in IE.

Anyone have any idea on what to do for either of these issues? The animation stutter is pretty annoying. I want to believe it's application specific (Brackets, my code editor on the 4K monitor when dragged across the screen is super choppy and is dragged at like 16 fps), but I'm not sure?

Your laptop is pushing 4x more pixels, there may be some performance issues. Make sure your have hardware acceleration enabled in Chrome&Firefox, then see how performance varies when using integrated versus discrete graphics. (force discrete graphics from the Nvidia driver: Manage 3D Settings > Global Settings )

Also, are you running the unit plugged in? Any power savings on the video adapter side (Intel settings)?

PS: congratz on the new monitor :)

Huh, wasn't notified that I'd been quoted.

And that's what I figure. Although when I change the resolution to 1080p on the monitor I still see some of the issues although not as pronounced. There is no difference with either the dedicated or integrated GPU for me. It still bugs me that 4K/1080p60 is flawless in YT but microstutters in Chrome/FF. I can even play 4K video off my HDD (not the same but whatever). I'm about to just give up and just accept that the 750m is too weak to push 4K 100% efficiently.

And thanks! I''m running it using a vertical laptop stand. It's plugged in and on high performance. There's nothing hindering it's cooling as the intake and exhaust vents are just sitting in open air.

Funny enough, I can play Batman Arkham Asylum at 40-50fps on medium at 1080p with no issues.

Very strange. The 4K video stutters might be explained by FF/Chrome using a different build of Flash Player than IE, or a driver weakness.

I doubt you hit a hardware limitation, even HD 4600 should handle 4K fine.

Has anyone used this with two external monitors? I have the touchscreen N550JV-DB72T model, and just bought two Asus VN247H-P monitors that haven't arrived yet. The monitors have two hdmi inputs. Can I set it up with one monitor using the hdmi port and the other with a minidisplay port to hdmi connector? Thanks.

I seem to have the same issue with mine, been almost 6months now, I have given up with the jack and now use an external DAC. I did contact ASUS, but didn't have the time to give up my laptop to get it checked.

Heya, yep, I am running two monitors off the N550, one of HDMI, and the other through a mini-display port to HDMI converter. Works rather well!

Thanks - monitors should arrive today! Next will be switching to a Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD, and moving my 1GB 5400 HDD to the dvd drive with a caddy.

Any recommendations for a caddy? I am planning to get a 250gig SSD as well, with this caddy.

Edit: Saw your links, looks like the same thing!

I switched back to win 8.1. Even got myself the recovery DVD's. Everything went fine but my SD card reader is not functioning (does not read any card9! When I go have a look in the "devices" I find "Realtek USB 2.0 card reader" with no exclamtion mark so I guess it should work?! Coult it be a conflict?!

Are you guys' headphone jacks still working properly? Mine kind of crapped out within the first few months I had it back in 2013. I have to jiggle it to a delicate position to get any sound and any slight bump switches sound back to the laptop speakers.

And I could never get an integrated mic on headphones to work. Hate how they got rid of a dedicated mic jack.

    Hello there,

Just bought new N550LF but I'm quite dissapointed there's a problem with USB3.0 drivers for N550 series in Windows 7. It seems none from official Intel drivers seem to work, the installer just freezes during installation. Is there any fix available so I could use Windows 7 without any problems?

What driver packages have you tried to install? Did you try the 8.1 set from asus to see if it would work?

Some of you mention problems with the audio. I just got my motherboard replaced because of a faulty jack - no signal if the headphone jack snapped in place, but signal if I carefully inserted the jack without snapping into place.
And the laptop speakers also require a little volume before they start playing, and whenever I mute afterwards there's a low "white noise" sound coming from the speakers :(. That noise stops if I shut down, restart or put the laptop in hibernate.
If you write "Audio by Bang & Olufsen ICEpower" on the laptop, then you would at least expect the audio part of the laptop to work flawlessly ;) ..

The headphone jack, albeit a bit flimsy, works well in my case, though I still find this problem annoying. I tried booting the laptop multiple times with a pair of headphones pre-connected, with the volume set as low as possible, and the sound worked, with the Windows start-up sound and everything. However when I boot up with no headphones and low volume, I have to rack up the volume to "switch on" the speakers. So I assume it would be a hardware problem. I'm contemplating returning it on warranty, as it seems to be a common problem.

Windows 8.1 doesn't require any USB 3.0 drivers to install.

    Guys, finally getting a SSD(MX100 - 256GB) tomorrow.
What is the preffered way to transfering all my stuff to it? I also got a USB caddy to plug in my old disk.

    Hi folks,
I have N550JV-CN313H for about one year. Dead pixels and some kind of white spots kept appearing (now there are about 20). Also there is light bleeding, I see it very clearly when I open black window.
Then, I have problem with wifi, I tried TP-link and Lynksis routers, but it takes a while for loading the page. I tried to turn off and on wifi on the laptop and it works for couple of hours, and then again something go wrong and the Internet connection become very slow and unresponsive. Is the problem in Intel wireless card in laptop or in windows 8.1? Sometimes, on the other wifi network, if it is not so strong, when I connect my laptop on it, the other users on that wifi lose their signal too (limited connection).
Is it common bug or I am the only stuck with this laptop and problems?

Same problem here, have you returned it on warranty?

Put the SSD in a USB enclosure, and clone your internal HDD to the external SSD using software such as Acronis True Image Home.

    Install SSD where HDD is.

Yes , since march and now on build 10162 .
Everything works perfectly IF you keep the original graphic drivers intact and not update them , so use the old ones form ASUS website for both Intel and NVIDIA and you are good .

    Enjoy !!

Actually I had a Windows 7 and I just upgraded to build 10041 without any problem at all , I noticed that the graphic drivers that came as a upgrade with win10 were causing some issues with certain CAD software I use and I just reverted back to the ones that are on the ASUS website , I have had no other problems with win10 , intel says they will provide drivers for win10 once it comes out which would be a month form now , so until then I stay away form beta drivers from both Intel and Nvidia, I have had no problems at all with my win1o installation.

I used the windows 8.1 drivers that are on the ASUS website .
As a procedure when you install win10 it will replace the drivers you have so download them and then once you are done you install them old drivers , first the Intel driver then the Nvidia and you are good to go.

For me win10 is much faster than win7 but I did upgrade my RAM to 16 Gb, I think what was a mistake as win10 is really light on resources.

Hi all, new here and I really wanted to replace the Atheros wireless card on my N550JV. However, after researching for almost a week, I'm thoroughly confused on these new connector standards. I assume the 550JV uses a half-height mPCIe wireless card, but newer cards tend to be M.2 NGFF now?

I was looking at either the Killer 1525 (available here and here), or the Intel 7260 (available here). I do have a Wireless AC network, so makes sense to get a wireless AC card. The Intel 7260 appears to be a mPCIe card, but I thought I'd check with some experts and see if they can enlighten me. I'm aware you can actually get a conversion board (available here), but again, I wanted to check if there are any benefits or drawbacks to doing so, and if anyone has any experience in doing this.

My bigger concern is regarding the antenna connectors, which I cannot find much information on. Apparently M.2 cards use smaller antenna connectors, but I cannot find much to go on this, let alone confirm whether or not a specific card uses a certain type of antenna connector.

Any information you could provide would be of massive, massive help to me, as I'm planning to buy two cards to replace mine and my sister's as soon as I receive my next paycheck next month. Thanks!

The 7260 can actually be either, but the one you linked is the correct version, notice that m.2 as two "keys" and is a slightly different shape making it visually distinct.

I am using the old intel driver form the Asus Website version 10.18.10.3308 and Nvidia I use the latest one always form nvidia website 10.18.13.5354. I make sure the Wndows doesnt upgrade me Intel driver bcs then my laptop cant wake up but crashes with BSOD and I have to revert it back to the old Asus driver. And this is the only maintenance I do . I have filed a request to Asus if they can provide new drivers for Intel HD 4600, bcs Intel said their driver is generic and doesnt have some "stuff" the manufacturer driver has .. this is all that is about windows 10.

Thanks, Meaker. I was more keen on the Killer 1525, but don't want to risk the antenna connections not being compatible. If anyone has any idea about the difference in M.2 and MPCIe antenna connectors, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

Uninstall both Intel & Nvidia from your PC, reboot, then reinstall using the latest version from its respective manufacturer to get the driver you need.

Yes I did that many times .. and the Intel drivers that come form the Windows update have the issue of not letting my laptop go to sleep , that is the reason why I use the old drivers form the Asus website.

    Didn't read pages from 98 to 174 yet :)
Thanks to first 50 pages and solution with CPU undervolting.
Also, overclocked GPU RAM by 240mhz.

And main thing - just updated ThrottleStop from 8.00 version to latest Beta 2.
I have suffered from throttling for a long time, as CPU reaches 86* or GPU reaches 82*.
Used Alarm mode and 2 profiles with FullTurbo and 2.8Ghz modes for CPU, to avoid it.

But now... yesterday record was 96* on CPU and 86* GPU without limits. And NO throttling!

It even didn't throttle at CPU 95*, and this is hardware top oO Does it look at 100* top now?
So, latest version of ThrottleStop is solution to all? Yay.

haha, did pages 98-174 :D nothing really new and useful for N550 owners.
Through i didn't do GPU chip overclock by 100mhz, aware of getting it too hot.
Cooling system coppper pads are polished to mirror-like condition and repasted, btw.

@Kevin "I am not asking for a link , man ." I was stating that I am having trouble with that driver you mentioned , that is causing me to have sleeping/waking up issues .That was the why I had to go to the old driver bcs I dont have problems with the old one , but I do have problems with the new win10 driver for Intel.

I agree, the issue is very likely to be related to driver.
Someone else has reported issue with it too.

Did anybody explored possibility to upgrade GPU by reboiling on Asus n550JV?
Maybe someone digged some info about motherboard supported chips, something about bios (possible to change settings and flash custom bios?) and gpu memory?

I think there should be some kind of breach.
Or, maybe, just GPU memory uprgrade. 750m has modifications with gddr5.
    Any clues?
