Usually, I don't like the machine when it first comes from factory. There are usually lot of bloatware.
When I receive my N71JQ, I am going to remove Win7 Home Premium and install my own Win7 Ultimate. I will also delete the hidden partition and I will remove most of the ASUS softwares.
As I have been using ASUS brand for over 5 years now, I usually know which programs are necessary.![]()
Some of the softwares are really useless for me.

Got mine yesterday and lovin it. Has run everything I've put on it game wise all at native resolution with eye candy turned on. I was surprised to see Bioshock 2 run on it so well. Definatly kicks the snot out of my old desktop. Had a dual core e2150 1.8ghz with an 8800gts 320mb but sold it to a buddy at work to get this. Not regreting it at all.
I find it does get a warm when playing games but nothing a cooling pad shouldn't fix. -
Thank you brochiller that is helpful, I got rid of the game crap and trial versions of stuff but I was not sure about the asus stuff
-
I wonder how loud does it get when running longer times under full load?
-
I got my N61JQ-X1 about a week ago and I couldn't be happier. I actually had my eye on the Gateway NV5926u, but when I walked in to my local retailer and saw it I had to pick it up (1 of my 2 impulse buys in my lifetime). This laptop is so nice i have even started PC gaming again and given my consoles a break.
This weekend I'll do a complete wipe of the hard drive, install Windows 7 Ultimate and load up my usual programs. I'll probably also ghost the drive to another 320gb I have for a backup. -
After doing a fresh windows intall I usually make an image of my drive. This serves the purpose of resotoring the system back if something goes wrong in the future.
I usually make a smaller C partition and larger D partition. C usually contains only operating system and intalled programs. My Documents and other data I usaully locate it on D drive. In this way I have the flexibility of restoring the system from image at anytime without worrying about my data.
An advice to somebody who want to do that. During the installation process the windows is creating lot of restore points. If you make an image the size could be very large. First use some tool to Cleanup the windows in order to remove all the unnecessary tmp files and restore points. This usually reduces the size of the image file.
I am usually using TuneUP utilities to clean windows up before making image. -
Upon closer inspection it appears I have 1333mhz ram in mine as opposed to the advertised 1066 (not complaining). I ordered from newegg if anyone is wondering.
-
mine is 1066mhz
from amazon
-
Do you have the A1 or X1?
-
I have an X1
-
I see.
There's a ton of listings on eBay for the A1 version. Specs says that it also has 1333 memory. I wonder if those listings are in stock or they're actually in back order. One seller has at least 80+ available.
Edit:
back order... ETA 03/02/10
-
Mine also came with 1333 RAM. Purchased on Newegg.

Hey guys I have a question about the recovery cds: I received a windows 7 recovery cd and a drivers cd. Does the Windows 7 cd include all the bloatware or is it a plain OS install?
-
Bloatware is included.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Any bloatware would be on the drivers disk, not the OS recovery disk, and it allows you to unselect anything you don't want before you begin the installation.
Very clean
-
It includes most, but not all of the bloatware. Basically it's a Windows 7 image and it will ask you for the drivers CD which installs all the bloat in an automated fashion. It's much easier to simply remove all the bloat on this install that is there when you get your PC. Unless you have you're own Windows 7 disk.
-
I must have skipped that menu.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Actually, I was wrong.
When you install a fresh OS, like Pro or Ultimate, using your own disk then you would use the drivers disk where you can unselect anything you don't want to install.
When you use the recovery disk it is all installed, so you have to go to Control Panel>Programs and Features to remove anything you don't want. -
Thanks!....One last question: what is the difference between the supplied recovery dvd and the 4 dvds that I burnt using the AI REcovery utility?
-
This link might help you decide.

No news on a larger battery yet. Try this link on the bloatware.

Donald@Paladin44 Retired
No difference really. ASUS is transitioning to a system where they will not be delivering the disks anymore, so new buyers of anything coming from China after February 4th will have to rely on AI Recovery.
Recent purchasers have the advantage of redundancy. -
Can I uninstall AI Recovery since Ive burned the 4 recovery discs or should I keep it?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Keep it...then you can use it again after you have a bunch of stuff installed and you can run it again. Restoring has never been quicker

N61JQ-X1 Newegg fun facts!
1- 5 star rating in 24 of 25 reviews!
2- Listed as top seller!
3- Listed as deal of the day!
4- $100 price increase to $1099
Question? If you have not ordered your N61JQ then what the hell are you waiting for?
Still Loving Mine!!
-
I still recommend the A1 model from Powernotebooks
-
I didn't mean to endorse Newegg Adamal. Obviously not with the price increase and no A1 option.
I'm just sayin the reviews are coming in and its all good!!
Maybee its time to pull the trigger!!
-
If you can find one. It sounds like they're selling like hot cakes. Prob. because they are such killer machines. Don't get me wrong I love newegg. All my desktop PC's I've built over the years have been from newegg. At least the ones where I haven't had to return at least one component (I'm looking at you Fry's electronics). However the service I've received at PowerNotebooks basically begs, no requires me to recommend them.
-
For the record, that single 1 egg review was for the misunderstanding about the warranty length
.
-
Judging from the help that Donald has provided this forum I would 2nd your
PowerNotebooks recommendation. I will be checking them out in the future.
I just used Newegg because they seemed to have them in stock first and I could not wait.
-
Thank's, I knew that. I just didn't want to single out a fellow N61JQ Owners Lounge contributor. Especially since I was also so pissed about getting jobbed on my warranty fron Newegg.
-
1333 mhz or 1066 mhz? can anyone confirm?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
We have seen them come in both ways.
-
Shipped today from powernotebooks! Will be in my hands Tuesday. Thanks powernotebooks. Anybody buying one should have powernotebooks at the top of their list. They have hands down the best customer service I have ever seen!
-
Hi, i have a question for N61JQ owners. How is it with powersaving mode on hd 5730? I have read somewhere that this 5000 series is on powersaving (2d) mode as good in watt consumption as integrated one. Is it true? The point is if i should wait for i7-620m switchable graphics or not. It might give an extra one hour on battery. 4 cores on one side, extra hour on battery on the other. Maybe bigger battery in N61jq would solve the issue. The only thing i really miss is full hd display compared to vaio EB full hd, hd 5650, but only i5-520m (sony UK). If asus would add full hd to n61jq, it would be best choice.

Does anybody know if the USPS ever change the tracking status of packages?
1.5 days since Gentech handed them my N71JQ, they still show:
Your item was accepted on February 11, 2010.
But still no further details so far. I wonder if the package is still sitting at some place with USPS or if it is on the way to Germany.
-
Sometimes you wont see a status change until it reaches your city.Sometimes you will get alot of status change updates. I would not worry about that.
-
Hi everyone, I'm new in this forum. I reached you googling the web for some reviews about asus laptop N61JQ. It seems I'm in the right place here!
I read (quite fastly and I apologize if I'm somehow redundant) your posts and it seems you're speaking about two main models: N61jq-x1 and N61jq-a1.
Now, here in Italy, I can buy this model N61JQ-JX005V.
You can see an Italian spec here: http://www.essedi.it/scheda_art.htm?SID=&ID=69642&ID_MCAT=0&ID_CAT=15&SHOP=5&LST=_BB_&PRT=
Is it referable to one of the two or it's something different?
Anyway, my great dilemma is related to i7 45W TDP and the fact it's going to be hot or not while making an intensive use of it. Tragedy for the battery, I expect.
Bye -
N61JQ-A1 price hiked by PowerNoteBooks from $1065 to $1099
Though its still $1065 at XoticPC
Can not understand WHY PNB hiked the price ?
Is it hitting the rod when its hot ? -
that is not expected of reputed resellers like PNB.com
i hope gentech isnt following suit
UPDATE- gentech is still at 1065, and so is xoticpc. -
also, a quick question for guys here- is N61JQ-A1 retailing in the UK?
-
It still shows at $1065 on powernotebooks
-
It very well could be that ASUS is hiking the price. They may have upped the RAM to 1333 in newer models and decided to MSRP this thing at $1099.00. Honestly, I can't see a competitor coming close to the specs at this price. We may find other resellers following the price change when they order new stock.
This is purely speculation on my part though. -
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
The pricing has not been raised by ASUS, there is a minimum price set by ASUS and it is up to the reseller to sell it at that or raise it.
-
Heh. I love speculating.
Hey, how come I didn't know about you guys before I ordered from screw-egg!
;-) -
Hey, send me some logos and I will post some free ads for you on the andLinux web site.
-
While I do agree that the price is unbeatable, I believe that ASUS skimped on the quality of the screen. The vertical viewing angle is not very good and the illumination is not uniform. I still love this machine though.
-
It looks similar to A1 (500gb hdd 7500rpm 2yr warranty)
Temperature wise... I'll wait for the new i7's QM to show up (35W and with IGP)
-
i getting the n61jq-x at the end of this month
, seeing how many of u guys already have been using it for a fair amount of time ,can someone please suggest a list of things to do when you first get the laptop. Iv'e already decided what bloatware to keep,so anything else i need to know??
