It's definitely not supposed to boot up when you plug it in. Good call sending it back.

    No need for introductions here!

Hi 2MNY, I didn't know about Tomato but I do know dd-wrt though for now I do not fancy doing the 30-30-30 procedure on my WRT610N even though it would bring some nice benefits. Thanks anyway :) .

Thanks for the greetings (e contraccambio) even though I must admit I have dual-nationality GB & ITA ;) (anche per me mi fa piacere sapere che c'è un altro italiano qui) :) .

that should toggle your power4gear on your laptop (unless you uninstalled it). i.e., it will change your power settings from high performance, entertainment mode, quiet office, or battery savings.

and if you push on it when your laptop is off, it will take you to express gate.

It changes your power4gear power modes. You should have a graphic pop up on the screen and see the screen settings change every time you push it. If not try upgrading your driver.

Thanks guys. Recently I reformatted windows 7 to get rid of the bloatware that came with my system. I found and installed all the other drivers and software, but that one. Do you guys know the software for that? I have looked everywhere on the asus website and I can't find the software for it.

Hello everyone I am new here and I am really interested in the Asus N61jq.
The problem I got is that this laptop is not available anymore in my country(Netherlands). However I found a other type just like the N61jq,
the PRO64JQ. My question is wat is the difference other than the hdd?
I cant even find this type on the site of asus. So whats the deal :s

It would be awesome if someone can help me out getting a new Asus laptop :)

It definitely striked me as odd, and considering what came next I think it was a defective one. Hope the replacement will arrive soon AND it will finally work. First the pixel problem, than this faulty unit...will three be the charm?
Same thing happened with my current laptop, and amilo m1437g...first was defective, second had bad pixels and the third is the one I'm using right now, almost five years in.

@fabsblu: that's great, I'd love to live in Britain, I visited London last may and loved it, so GB (and also the US) have a special place in my heart!
If you want to talk good old italian you know now who to send a message to :)

@sonofcrake: thanks for the welcome :) and thanks for the stuff you're posting about the cooling pad, it'll definitely be useful when I'll have to get one very soon (hoping the notebook will be in my hands&working quickly of course)

You can check the Paradigit stores in the Netherlands for the N61JQ... Still a few available acording to their website. The PRO64JQ seems to be more expensive and has a smaller hdd.

    Thanks for your reply
I did call Paradigit and they told me that only the store in Den Haag got 1 on stock so I sent them an email and ask if that is really true and if it is new or used as a showmodel. Still waiting for an answer....

Thanks i forgot it was on that link. Asus tech support said i would have had to reformat my pc again to get that software back on my system lol. I figured since i have the button for it miles well make that button useful. Though i do notice a nice diff between the defualt windows battey saving mode setting and the battery saving mode setting with the asus version. Asus battery saving mode setting seems to do a better job with configuring the battery more then the windows version does by automaticly disabling features like aero glass etc.. when you really want to preseve as much power as possible.

oh god, i am unsure why people would want to update their BIOS. i personally am an update freak, i check the driver thread twice every day. but the bios update is just too risky, and no real gain to what i have read.

but i guess its easier for most of you guys to get it replaced.. hmm...

I am not an expert but if you cannot start it then yes you have a brick on your hands. This happened to me. It is covered on your warranty. They will have to replace your motherboard. From what happened to me and others here you might have problems with your windows coming up as un-authentic after you do a restore on the new motherboard. It seems this is a ball ASUS drops when they replace your motherboard. It is solvable by caling Microsoft but is a pain in the a*#. You might mention this when you call to RMA it. Also check to see if you are lucky enough to have an authorized service center close to you. I did and it worked out well since I did not have to ship it back to Asus, which can turn into a nightmare as reported here several times.
Good luck and keep us updated as we have not had any recent RMA reports to see how they are handling them at Asus.

 sorry to hear that happened :(. Was your BIOS a version prior to 210? They supposedly fixed the bricking problem with 210.

Before sending it back, try unplugging the laptop, removing the battery, holding down the power button for 1 minute, then plugging in and starting it (without the battery).

I feel the same way you do. If you are not already familliar with flashing your bios then I don't think it is worth it unless you are having issues that can only be solved with a new bios. All the computers I have had I never flashed the bios and it didn't seem to matter. This was the first one I tried and I bricked it. Now that I am more comfortable with it and know what I did wrong I will flash the bios if it really needs it.
But your last quote is not appropriate. Most of the people here could flash their bios with their eyes closed and have never had a problem doing so.
I just can't personaly stress the point enough that if you are new to flashing you should follow the guidelines. Which are only update your bios if you are having a problem that the new bios will address.

Yup, they forget to put in the SLIC table when they put in a new motherboard. I managed to return mine and specifically state that I wanted it back in. I also backed up the restore partition just in case. What happened when they sent mine back is they wiped the original restore partition and a load of apps and programs were missing such as powerdvd. So I used the backup disks from my orignal restore parition to remake it and voila all ok. My slic is also valid and intact.

Hey, I got great help here a couple days ago, so if someone could help again, I'd would really appreciate it!

After an extended period of time, the brightness sliders will simply not work. I've tried all power settings, the advanced settings, everything! It seems to be related to me either closing the laptop, or unplugging the laptop.

    Any help?

I get that too sometimes. It seems to happen when I plug/unplug immediately after turning on the computer or waking from hibernation. I try to make sure that the laptop is plugged in before starting it/waking it, or waiting until it is completely booted before plugging/unplugging.

Hello, everyone! I have a pretty dumb question regarding the keyboard of the Asus N61JQ-XV1.

I'm thinking about purchasing the model from Amazon, but the photos show that the computer has a slightly different keyboard layout than what I'm used to. For instance, the "Enter" key has a more vertical orientation rather than horizontal orientation. Furthermore, the number 3 key has the Euro currency symbol above it rather than the American dollar symbol.

Am I correct in assuming that the photos are for the European model? For the record, I am in America, so I'm looking for a regular keyboard layout with the "Enter" key being more horizontal than vertical.

Thank you so much for your help! I know it's a rather silly question.

Anyone have trouble with the standby function on the N61? Whenever I put it into standby the lights on the power button and sides continue being lit. I can also feel the hard disk spinning too. Standby is supposed to shut everything off except RAM so I really shouldn't feel the hard disk still spinning. A simple touch on the touchpad will "wake" the system but it seems more like the screen reappears instead of it waking up from sleep.

In sleep mode my N61JQ shows a blinking white light, hard disk spins down and doesn't wake up after touching the touchpad. I assume sleep mode is the same as standby, so it seems that the behaviour of your laptop is different. I prefer the hibernate mode in order to save my work to disk.

It sounds like your machine isn't actually entering sleep mode. In sleep mode the unit should behave as ejmaask indicates. I use sleep mode quite a bit. Note that the touch pad won't wake it out of sleep, you have to press the 'any key' to wake it ;)

Are you using Ubuntu by chance? I had the same problem with my N61 with Ubuntu, untll I disabled USB 3.0 in the BIOS. In windows 7 I never had a problem with it either way.

Sometimes the computer can be asleep and then after a certain period of inactivity, will actually power up a bit, write the current state to the hdd, then go into hibernate mode which draws less power. When this happens, the screen will be blank, the side lights will stay on constantly and the hdd will spin up. Now, I know you said this happens as you put the computer into standby, so what's the possibility that you're shortcut for standby is mapped to hibernate? Also, under power settings, check the difference in time between when your computer is set to sleep and hibernate. If they're too close together, it could cause an issue like this (say if it were set to sleep after 1 minute and hibernate after 1 or 2 minutes)

I had this problem when my laptop did the same thing as jumpmanxt resuming out of sleep mode. I fixed the problem by updating my ATI Radeon mobility drivers to v10.8 Every since then my laptop has had no issues waking up out of sleep which tells me it was the graphics driver issue causing it.

Anyway, here is something odd. When there isn't a music player on my screen that i'm using and i press the play/pause media button on my laptop Windows Media Center pops up. Wonder why.......

Lately I cant use the wireless adapter on my Asus notebook.
I checked adapter settings "device is working properly" but the wireless light is not flashing. I can only connect thru Lan.

    Hey everyone,

First off, thanks for this great informational thread started by GregW. The drivers thread by stevedogg was awesome as well and helped me get up and running swiftly with the latest drivers.

Unfortunately, my N61JQ-X1 is plagued with the squeal of death as I have come to call it. I implemented the regedit and power option fix below…

Typing in the command line "regedit", you go to the registry key:
    1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Power \ PowerSettings \ 54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00 \ 5d76a2ca-e8c0-402f-a133-2158492d58ad

    2. Included option in this branch will enable and disable the idle processor. In this case, it should be included.
To enable one or another hidden parameter, it is necessary to find and edit the value DWORD, changing its value SettingValue from 1 to 0.

    3. Then, through the control panel - power - in the settings mode select power management processor.
There will be an option disabling idle processor and high pitched noise immediately disappears.

However this causes the laptop to run super hot whilst the fan goes on max, the graphics card runs hotter, just completely unnecessary stuff…

I also tried the microphone fix some people suggested on other forums…

Go to “Start,” then “Control Panel,” and then click on the “Hardware & Sound” category. Then click on the “Sound” category, and then click on the “Recording” tab. Highlight the microphone and go to Properties. Select the “Listen” tab and “Mute” the mic as well as put a check mark where it says “Listen to this device.” That should fix everything. When you want to use the mic or webcam, just undo these settings.

This above mic fix didn’t work for me.

My question is has anyone successfully gotten a full refund return from Asus due to this high pitched issue. I’ve read that many of you have sent it back for this issue and the repaired motherboard always comes back with the same sound from the capacitor causing the high pitched squealing noise. I don’t have time for these games as this was supposed to be my primary business laptop and I cannot afford a headache from this noise, I get enough of that as is with work altogether.

I bought this laptop on Newegg in late July and only got it up and running a couple of weeks ago being so busy with work. Any advice before I hit the phones with Asus to request a full refund. This noise is unacceptable, I’m running the latest bios and I’ve also been following a thread on Asus forums for a similar laptop model with the same problem and noticed that the members of the thread never got anything resolved with Asus, I wouldn’t expect different from this model.

ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Forum- How to eliminate high pitch noise?

What’s sad is this laptop had the highest rating on Newegg and other review sites when I got it and this issue is flat out catastrophic… you either get a high pitched sound that is unbearable or all 8 cores never idle and burn all day long.

Thanks again for reading my thread.

    Mike

P.S. I have a Asus netbook, been buying Asus motherboards for years on my custom built desktops and have never seen such a poor job of integrating intel's chip and motherboard with their product.

I tried everything to get rid of the whine, and nothing works without sucking battery power or heating up the laptop. I know what is causing it mainly and that is flash, silverlight, Google Chrome and iTunes. The only way to avoid it for me is to use firefox and disable crash protection for it which prevent flash and silverlight locking the cpu in a low power state, which causes the whine.

To tweak firefox do the following:

    1. Type about:config in the address bar
    2. Type dom
    3. Search for dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npswf32.dll
    4. Disable it and restart.
You will be able to surf without the annoying whining. It is not just our laptops, but is inherent with Intel CPU and the C4 low power state. Some manufacturers have worked around it, alas Asus have not.

I hear ya Risco, I'm just a super big Google fanboy, love AdWords, love the company, and use Chrome as if my life depends on it. The JavaScript V8 engine is so fast, its scary. It just flat out flys, lol.

Anyway, bummer on the intel CPU with low power state, my hearing is super acute, almost catlike, so its literally drives me insane and gives me migraines! If I can't get Asus to give me a refund, I might have to give it as a gift or resell it. I literally have used the laptop for less than 5 hours; its practically brand new and aside from the noise, its absolutely unbelievable. The keyboard is awesome.

Anyone else with advice on return or alternate fixes? Thanks to all...

    Mike

elkind23, Welcome to the thread. I'm hoping someone comes up with a fix for you as it would be nice to have you as a contributor here. I have not seen a report here of someone getting a refund out of Asus and I think hell will freeze over before that happens. You might have had better luck with Newegg had you jumped on it right away. If you make enough waves sometimes they will offer you a full credit to repurchase with them.

Here is what I am trying to figure out. We have only had a few reports of this whine here. Do you think that most of the N61's make the same noise and it only bothers some. Or do you think that some of the N61's make more noise and would bother anyone?
Some like me percieve this laptop as whisper quiet. Some cannot use it because of the noise. Is our perception of the same noise different or is the actual noise different?

GregW, I too wonder if it affects all N61's or just a select batch. The only way to tell is if people run the regedit fix I mentioned in my earlier post (to enable toggling processor idle disable in power options) and then turn off the processor idle in power options. If you put your ear near the keyboard and turn it off and it suddenly becomes silent, then I presume it affects that machine.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people have it and only a select few are actually affected by the noise. I am just dumbfounded that a BIOS update can't fix it, and on the Asus boards there is a big thread (linked in my prior post) on another Asus laptop that never got a bios update for this exact whine sounds.

Risco is probably right that a lot of Intel CPUs with the lower power state have this whine noise.

Risco, you mentioned some manufacturers have worked around this issue, would you mind letting me know which ones so I can ensure I get one of these. Any recommendations? I really want an i7.

Words cannot fully describe how much I hate returns and RMAs. I'm an seasoned negotiator and know how to turn up any category 5 storm, but I just have so many better things to focus on that I always find an alternate friendly solution.

Yeah I hear you on that one, I turned my old Dell XPS G2 laptop on just now and started thinking I am just too OCD with this new laptop. The hardest part about potentially letting it go is how unbelievable fast this laptop is. I put an OCZ Agility 2 SSD in it and let me tell you, this thing flys. It starts up in literally 5-7 seconds and opening any app takes milliseconds. Opening Google Chrome is the fastest thing I have ever seen on a computer. I double click the icon and Chrome is already loaded on google.com before I'm even done double clicking, lol.

The noise is coming from the vent underneath the touchpad. I had my touchpad replaced due to it buzzing. Has anyone got a disassembly guide for this laptop?

If I put my ear up to the touchpad I hear a faint squeaking. Do you think that is the noise you are talking about? If so maybe it is only loud enough to hear in some units.

elkind23, Im hoping you decide to hang in there with this laptop. We could use your contributions here. Listen to how you describe the performance. You can't have everything! Maybe you will adjust to the noise.

Amazing those problems are still in discussion after i left for a while. Well i have non of it except Sound Device can still mess up uncontrollable after some unknown occourance, that is because i didn't install the Realtek HD audio driver.

I as well changed the thermal compound to Artic Silver 5. I was shocked to find out that the stock thermal compound can actually dry up for only 3 months that i barely use it. Now with AC5, full performance gaming GPU secured 60 degress Celcius at top, mostly around 52-55c . Most noticable cooling effect is on CPU, 65c (single thread) at top and down to 48c for only 10 seconds idling.

    Greg,

Thanks for the encouragement; I've been playing with the microphone workaround fix to reduce the noise and I am very impressed with the results.

Essentially, my high pitched whine is reduced by ~80% (very tolerable) when I use an application called Virtual Audio Cable and listen to the audio driver it creates.

You can install the application here: Virtual Audio Cable Home Page

I recommend using the stable 4.09 version, make sure to use the signed driver download to avoid any Windows 7 driver signing rejections. Or disable driver signing here:
Disable Driver Signing in Windows 7

Basically after installing the driver you go into

Control Panel - Sound - Recording Tab - Line 1 (Virtual Audio Cable) right click properties - Listen Tab - hit the checkbox "listen to this device" - in the Playback through this device drop-down select Line 1 (Virtual Audio Cable) and lastly in the Levels Tab mute the device

Muting the device may not be necessary & the Playback through this device drop-down may vary in selection with the same results; I'm pretty sure the only thing that is important is selecting the listen to this device checkbox.

The benefit of this virtual audio cable driver is being able to still use your microphone.

Hope this helps people with the whine sound who want to use the microphone and don't want the regedit power options processor idle disbable workaround.

    Mike

Yep, try opening iTunes when you do it. Does it get worse then? Make sure it is on battery, not plugged in.

Oh and elkind23, the mic fix does work but it drains battery power at a higher rate. I do not notice the noise unless I am on battery power.

I don't use iTunes, so I couldn't tell you. When I would disable processor idle it literally cut battery life in half and a full charge would go to one hour max. In your experience, how much is lost with the mic fix on battery? Lastly, are you using Windows 7 power management or Power4Gear Hybrid?

When I was scouring the drivers page when I installed all the drivers, I read that the N61JQ driver pro stevedogg didn't recommend Power4Gear Hybrid as it didn't offer any significant improvements.

I think I hear it while plugged in as well which is why I am wondering if you use Power4Gear Hybrid or Windows 7 Management.

I user batterybar pro, and the drain went from 18,000MW to about 28,000MW so it is significant drain on power. I also use power4gear as it is more convenient to press a button when I want to switch plans.

    Hi:

It's been almost a year since this notebook was released.

When is this laptop's successor going to be released (ie different design)?

I probably read about 200 pages of this thread tonight! I never knew this forum/thread existed and I'm so glad it does. I got this laptop for $825! Isn't that a deal? Anyway - I am really contemplating on replacing the stock thermal paste with some Arctic Silver 5. Why? Because it seems my load temps are a bit on the load side reaching in the high 70's to low 80's depending upon the ambient temperature. I read that it will void my warranty.. However - I looked at the guide and how to take it all apart and such so I'm pretty confident I could do it. I don't wanna end up with a void warranty though. Do you think I should apply AS5 and do you think it would give me a great temperature gain? Thank you!
