Thanks for spending the time to write that all out! I did the second one. Now let's see those performance boosts you're talking about -
Download 3DMark 11 here : 3DMark 11 – The Gamer's Benchmark for DirectX 11
You should get AT LEAST P1210. If you didn't something is wrong
Cheers! -
and I can't play videos with jetAudio anymore due to some codec issue.
Hum.
Maybe I'll just go back to the regular driver? -
Also, did you do the tricks I have referred in my previous post? It does pretty nice boosts. BTW, put the tesselation slider in 16x.
I will pic you with my settings ( in the CCC2 ) later
Here is the thread at TechPowerUp : How to get MLAA, etc to show up in Cat 10.12 CCC2 - techPowerUp! Forums
Follow all those steps.
By the way, can you please tell me your GPU score? Mine was 1120. -
I redid the testing and it only went up by 1... so it's now at 1208
for GPU, is that the graphics score? Mine is only 1075. -
How much RAM do you have?
Also, I found this really weird : when I had 4100 ish as CPU score, I had around 1080 GPU score and P1210~, but when I had around 3700-3800 as CPU score, I had 1100-1120 as GPU score and P1240-P1250... I find that REALLY weird... -
Do all those little knobs and switches in the CCC options matter for the Video
and gaming sections? (besides matching it with that website you sent me) -
In around 40-50 minutes I will be on my laptop, and will give a screenshot of my settings in my CCC2.

High guys, I've been having a problem with overheating lately. During gameplay (any intensive game) the laptop shuts down on its own due to overheating. The only way I can play now is if I turn on a fan and point it directly at the laptop.
With the pedestal fan blowing at it the cpu and gpu temps stay at about 94F ! what can I do? replace thermal compound? -
-
Unfortunately my warranty expired in february...I'm one of the early adopters hehe
-
Aw
Then, open the case and, with a vacuum cleaner, clean it all. Then, perhaps change the thermal paste, but I don't know how to do it
Here is the pic for you :

It was good helping another fellow N61Jq user -
I've never used Vantage, but yes. You get what i mean? -
Yeah, I get it
I think the best benchies are games, not benchmarks themselves... IMHO though. -
i used a vacuum cleaner to push air outwards. i placed the nozzle at an angles so as to not blow everything inside and turned the machine on for like 3 seconds. there was a lot of dust that the machine dispersed. and it reduced my temps from 97-98C to 85-86C. i suggest you try this.
this method does not require you to open up your laptop.
let us know if it worked for you too. -

I'm having trouble with black lines travelling down the screen of my HDTV when the laptop is connected. I'm running via an HDMI cable to a sony home theater reciever which then sends the signal to the TV. The strange thing is the lines go away when I play any kind of video, but come back as soon as the movie ends. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this and/or how to solve the issue?
-
Anyway, try updating your graphics card drivers etc, that might help. It does sound like a laptop graphics card problem i think. -
I also open the CPU cover whenever I play games for long hours. The highest temp drop some more to only around 76-78C. I don't put the screws on it anymore. When I want to use the cover, I just let it snap to the body and it holds pretty well actually (even without the screws). That way, I can easily open & close the cover whenever I want. -
Hello knowledgable friends
(Or so I hope..)
Ok, so in January my N61JQ-A1 (500GB HDD) decided it wanted to malfunction on me.
It all began with a grinding noise about two weeks before it decided to shut down completely, the noise seemed to be coming from the fan but I wasnt sure, then as time went on I would just be surfing the net and boom the laptop would turn off, plugged in and all as I'm guessing it overheated. I'm wondering if this is an issue with the fan? The thermal compund or what?
I have literally phoned Asus probably 15 times attempting to get them to pick it up but they have never once showed up with a delivery person, my computer was sitting in the box just waiting for the last two months and I grew sick and tired of waiting and am now going to try and tackle this issue myself.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!!! PS I have already referred to the disassembly guide in hopes I could just clean out the fan and what not and see if that would do anything.. will post back with results later. -
@IndustryX from it sounds it can be faulty hardware from power adapter to laptop, if the service man doesn't come to your doorstep (which assume they never will) is better to send it to authorized service center while its still under warranty. If you want to DIY best to test if the power source is stable, no mainboard damage, and change the thermal paste with CPU and GPU. OEM thermal pads tend to dry up very soon in just couple months of use.
Btw N61 cooling system is bit insufficient under stress condition. i7 720m CPU is one the fire heat the most especially when doing TurboBoost, 2009 top class 2 GPU runs hot but not as much as CPU, and while there's PCH chipset generates very much heat for the compartment. Heat ventilate with only one fan @ 4kRPM top speed, not good enough. If you play heavy games like Crysis and GTAIV sort of games at full speed, make sure you take the bottom cover off and have a fan on it + apply the best thermal paste you can get. And just for you guys want to know, my CPU and GPU barely reach 69'c when running Crysis 2 for hours. -
Hello guys again, i have a question, probably already answered, but cannot find it.
Is it posible to disable 3d effects for shortcuts ( volume, power4gear, etc. )
Because it started to annoy me now, not when it was new
I'd still like some indication of what happened, if i click a button, but would not like to have it in the center of my screen taking 3/4 of visible space.
Thanks for all answers in advance. -
How would I determine if it is a power supply issue? I'm nervous to remove the warranty sticker in case I can't fix it myself..
Would you be able to point towards the nearest authorized service center near Calgary Alberta Canada?
I'm just worried I would send it to them and they wouldnt be able to get it back to me seeing as they can't even pick the damn thing up in the first place.
I started it back up today and the fan doesn't even move and I downloaded a CPU temperature meter and it just climbs from 65ish up to 100 in about 5 minutes with only internet running, I don't know if it's the fan not working or what? HELP ME -

(If you don't like any of the following features, delete them from their corresponding subdirectories in "C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\ATK Package" (you need to kill the process first in Task Manager): ATKOSD2: 3D hotkey effects, ATK Media: link media buttons to Windows Media Center)
this is sourced from stevedogg's driver page -

Otherwise Asus Service Center.. is your best bet, email them and ask if you can buy a fan/assembly of the fan -
Does anyone know the ramifications of installing a different model monitor into this laptop? I'm looking to see if there's any way to install a 1080p preferably matte screen, but I haven't really found an answer to whether or not this is even possible. I've been looking at replacement 14x7.9" replacement notebook monitors mostly from ASUS' N series and such.
Nothing too big, but it would be nice to have a pretty and portable screen besides my rather hefty external monitor. -

Hi, I got a few problems with my ASUS N61 Series N61JQ-X1 laptop. I was wondering if anyone here can help me with a few.
1. My gaming performance is not nearly as high when I first got this laptop. I used to play StarCraft II on middle-high settings around 40-60 fps, with no lag spikes, not matter how much was going in game (I was able to play big 4v4 battles with very smooth gameplay). It has been a month and a half since I last played. So I tried to play it again, except I get crazy lag and get low FPS (anywhere from 9-20 FPS). I lowered the graphics, reinstalled my drivers, restored the graphics to the defaults still the same problem. Even reinstalled windows. Even tried to play the game on the lowest graphics possible, still the same problem. It might go smooth for like 10-20 seconds, than FPS will drop down no matter what is going on. From the very beginning since I played Star Craft II, I applied these 2 lines to prevent overheating:
frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60.
I was thinking it was a dust problem, or a overheating problem with my CPU or Graphics Card. Maybe the fans are not working or something. I do have a platform cooler for my laptop when I am at home gaming. Not really sure what the problem is. I always makes sure my games never go over 60 FPS by the way. Anyone know what the problem can be. StarCraft II is probably the only game I play that requires some good hardware. I still play WarCraft III and Call of Duty 2. I get some lag spikes in big battles, and Call of Duty 2's FPS is not as high either. Used to be constant 60 FPS, not it is 30-60 constant.
2. My battery will not charge anymore. My laptop detects it. But it just goes down very slowly. It was a 90 percent, and after about a month it is at 77 percent. It does not charge at all, even though it detects it. I am hoping it is just the batter, and not a problem with my motherboard or something. Anyone know?
The next problems are not as big.
3. The finish on my keyboard is wearing off. For example, you can see finish wear off on the space bar where I press on, same problem with most of my other keyboard keys. Is there a way I can reapply a key board finish?
4. The protective plastic lens/screen on my screen very slightly pops out of place, when I open/close my laptop. Not a big deal, I am just a afraid I am going to get some dust in there that will be very hard to get out.
I still have manufacturing warranty till late August. You think they can fix these problems, if there is nothing I can do that will not void my warranty?
Let me know if you need anymore information, and thank you for reading! -
Maybe your laptop *thinks* it is on battery mode even when it's plugged in, which would prevent charging and force the video card into battery-saving mode. Try manually disabling the Power Play feature in Catalyst Control Center (double-click the little ATI driver icon in the taskbar). If performance improves, you need to find out why the laptop is not recognizing being plugged in; it could be a faulty power plug in the laptop or maybe a bad battery. Obviously the laptop is receiving AC power (otherwise it wouldn't run for a month on battery), but it should be charging up to ~95% at all times. -
Forgot a big detail. Keep in mind that, when I have my battery plugged, with no ac power plugged in, my computer will not even turn on. I press the power button and nothing happens. I have to use my AC power cord to get my computer to start. And if I unplug the power cord, my computer immediately shuts up, the second I remove the cord, (I made sure my battery was securely in, made sure there was no dust on that surface or anything).
Thank you for your suggestion. I am trying it right now. It is at 76 right now. Going to restart my computer, and see if it goes up at. But I think it is going to be the same because when I reinstalled windows, my battery would still not charge. As of right now, that power play feature is disabled.
EDIT: My laptop does not even seem to charge when it is shut down. -
-
-Reason: My laptop was completely shut down for about 2 hours. Right when it finished starting up, I played a game of StarCraft II. It seemed to be going fine (reminder that I am playing on low-middle settings now). Then about after 7 minutes, the game began to start getting choppy again, low fps, and some lag spikes. Not a computer expert here, but I think overheating is probably the problem. Just thinking the problem is, for a short amount of time when everything is cool, and goes choppy when things start getting hot, still not sure if it is the CPU or graphics card. Hopefully the RMA, will fix this, along with my battery problem.
Question: What are the problems of a overheating laptop computer part. Is it usually fixed by cleaning it out or fixing the fans/cooling devices? If my computer stays on and is able to run programs but not at the highest performance, does that mean my parts are working fine but just need a fix with the overheating. Or is the part itself messed up. Like if I have overheating with my CPU or graphics card, would the only way to get that part working 100 percent is to replace that part? Get what I am trying to say?
Anyone know a good program to monitor CPU and graphics card temperatures and fan speeds?
CPU: was going anywhere from 1.9-2.5 MHZ. And the Temperature was lowest at 88 C, and highest at 96 C. It was staying around 92-93 most of the time.
Graphics Card: The fan was staying at 30 percent. Not going higher or lower. The temperature was lowest at 90 C while gaming and highest at 97. It was usually staying around 94 C.
When I am not gaming, CPU stays at high 60s or very low 70s. Graphics card fan still stays at 30 percent. Temperature stays around 72-73 C.
HDD: was staying around 30-33 C, gaming or not. Not sure if that matters.
Those are pretty hot temperatures for my CPU and graphics card right? You think that is the cause of my low performance while gaming? -
At the battery problem, i'm taking it as a battery problem. Know anyone else with your laptop to try it out on?
Anyway, it could be the "Powerplay" settings causing the lag, OR it could be the overheating, it seems like overheating to me.
Also with the keyboard finish they will not replace/fix it, unless you ask them which will cost. So get your own keyboard off ebay and replace it if it worries you that much. (It'll be cheaper then Asus)
At the Dust comment too, ask them to look at it. I don't know what they'll do, i've got a bit of dust in my laptop too, it doesn't annoy me too much to worry about anyway
At the Screen comment, have fun with finding a compatible screen,
From a quick ebay i think,
This
OR
This
Might work if Asus/Dell use standard connectors, Dell make the best laptop screens by far also if you are looking for quality.
I've seen this in a friends old laptop, it's by far better then any screen of it's time. Along with the stuff people say about them.
Good luck! -
-
My N61JQ come very hotter with last ATI 10.4 drivers
If I compare with 10.3 drivers the laptop is 5° to 7° hotter
And yours ? -
2 more questions.
My Disk Drive has been crashing lately when putting stuff on DVDs.
Like this error:
And I remember having 4 wireless cards on my laptop. Now I have two:
I tried to fix them, but I could not.
You think the RMA fix them? -
-
Reinstalling windows will probably fix the DVD drive problem. -
Well, they are closed right now, so I am going to call them first thing tomorrow. Going to them my problems. Hopefully, they can fix the overheating, and fans, and maybe the CPU or GPU itself, and the slight problem with my DVD drive. I hope they fix everything on the first try. Last thing. I want is be sending it back to them.
Anyone know how would they fix it? If the CPU or GPU is messed up itself, how would they fix that, since they cannot replace those parts. -
Fan speed is always at 30 percent. Is there any where I can put it higher? Is it bad to put it as 100 percent or something. -
-
It sounds like some sort of corription. If that doesn't work, RMA it -
Anyone know how to disable the white led lights on the lights on a ASUS N61JQ. They are just annoying to me, and if they can be turned off, that would be great. If there is a way to disable the white light on the power button as well, that would be great.
I rather be able to do it through the computer rather than covering it with some sort of tape. -
I have no idea why you want to disable them... They are awesome
But besides that, I believe you would need to open the laptop and cut the communication wire between the mobo and the leds... -
Another reason, is the way I got my room set up, is my laptop is right next to my bed, so when I have my HDMI cord connected to my laptop to my TV, those lights are shining right next to me, and all over the room.
