I have the Asus N61JQ-A1 and I love it! so much faster than my old MSI GX620
-
the thing is, you have to be careful with all electronics. even my DISH receiver malfunctioned due to heat. however, these heat issues are usually the user's fault (honestly). not being in a cool enough area, stuffing the unit in a closet, and pushing the cpu/gpu via overclocking causes more heat issues than the actual components if they are left alone.
imo, if you're careful enough with the laptop, don't sweat it (no pun intended). just keep the vents clean via air can, get a chill mat, and don't do risky overclocking and it should be fine. a little bit of heat while the laptop's on our lap (specifically this laptop) should be expected - this thing isn't a 13" macbook POS; it's made for doing stuff! -
would picasa or live work? they have thumbnails and stuff.
-
can anyone confirm if this model has the cpu whine common on alot of laptops? high pitch squeal? thanks
-
hey guys....
off the bat i have to say i LOVE this lappy
but
im having an issue
I downloaded the crysis demo and installed it and i get a black screen when i try to open it..and i cant do anything (open task manager, mouse wont work, etc.) i know this machine can handle crysis....why isnt it working??
my first thought is a bad download? if someone could link me to a good installer or demo site thatd be awesome though other ideas are welcome....thank you -
I would just uninstall it, then re-install to see if something was corrupt.
-
Yes I can confirm it. NOT!!! This thing has none of that. It is whisper quiet.
I was all focused on getting a new sony F series until everyone was complaining about that. I have had my N61JQ-X1 for 3 days and it is completely silent including the fans. I have not had one problem with this laptop.
I guess with the core i7 we will forever be worrying about the heat. People will go back and forth trying to decide if they should get the core i5 instead.
Not me, I want the best. I'm not going to spray the cpu or use a cooling pad.
Why am I not worried? 3 word answer....TWO YEAR WARRANTY!!! I figure if this thing burns up odds are it will do it in the first 2 years. All I know is I have a quiet core i7 on my lap with no pad for $999. And I'm LOVING IT!!!!
Besides the way technology is moving I might not make it 2 years without wanting a new laptop.
-
I just retried this demo. The black screen stays up for along time while it loads. you cannot see your mouse on this black screen,it won't show up. It seems to help if you take the mouse down to the crysis icon in the taskbar and try double clicking it. It just seems this demo is a little buggy,

Here are the results with using the Targus Chill mat I purchased:
Before:
After 2 mins:
After 30 mins:
TAKE NOTE that the best cooling is done when the laptop is off and you turn it on with the cooler in the first place; I plugged in the cooling pad AFTER the laptop had been on and on my lap for about 10 mins. -
I'm also considering getting the zalman... Or Rosewill has good reviews plus it serves as a usb hub with 4 ports which would be definitely a plus for me...
Here's a link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&cm_re=notebook_cooler-_-34-998-921-_-Product
Ally it's funny seems like we went down exactly the same road getting the X1... I too almost bought the Sony F CTO but after finding out about all of the noise complaints I waited for the X1 and so far I couldn't be happier with my choice. -
I'm in the same boat as you guys! I opted out of it mostly because of the weaker GPU, but that noise really sold me on the N61 too.
-
I actually remember your posts from the Sony F thread
-
Haha, I still check in there now and again, but for the most part I've migrated to the Asus board permanently.
-
Are they still having those noise issues?
-
Last I checked it yes they are still using the mic mute thing or whatever that fix was but since cancelling my G73 and ordering my N71 I havent been over there again....posts were moving too fast heh.
-
I don't think that Rosewill will work for this laptop. The N61 only has one vent near the middle and two sets of vents on the bottom.
I think the perfect cooler is the Zalman NC2000 but it's so darn expensive. -
Whattt i was just leaning more towards this laptop now, and theres a noise issue? How bad is the noise?
-
I think they were talking about a sony laptop, lol
-
I have the COOLER MASTER NOTEPAL X2 incoming...I should have my N61JQ-A1 next week. I will do a write up on the cooler / laptop also. Here is the link for the laptop cooler : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...27&cm_re=Cooler_Master-_-34-997-727-_-Product
-
Correct the noise issue is for the Sony F11 Laptop...
-
I do not have much experience about Asus USA warranty/guaranty.
But there is a difference in both !
Does Asus give you a complete new laptop replacement in case the laptop does not work properly within 2 yrs ? -
Can any of you proud owners of this machine tell us the shipment dimensions in inches or centimeters? This is really important because I'll be freight forwarding to where I live. Thanks.
-
Mine is out for delivery right now. I'll measure the shipping box once it arrives and post the dimensions for you. I expect it within 4-5 hours.
-
I received my N61JQ-A1 from Powernotebooks yesterday 02/04/10. It had a problem with it, after plugging it in for 10 mins for the first time and the left side of the keyboard would be really hot and shut down. I didn't even get to my desktop it ran so hot. So I had to send it back within the same hour I got it. But I trust Donald and the crew to see the problem and fix it.
And yes I did put IC Diamond thermal paste. Mine must be factory defected or something. -
Mine should be coming in next week...I hope everything is ok.
-
Not to cause any confusion... The noise issues I was referring to was about Sony F series laptopm... The Asus N61 doesn't have any...
Tesla I think the shipping box dimensions depends on where you are getting it from... Mine was through Newegg and so the Newegg box was pretty big... Perhaps different resellers have different boxes....
Xion that is unfortunate... Where did you order from? Did you get a customized configuration with the IC Diamond? -
Just noticed you got it from Powernotebooks. I'm wondering if it was assambled properly.
Actually I don't think there are any vents at the bottom. I know that on the left side is where all the hot air is going out, but I'm actually not sure how is the cool air coming in. Have a look at this picture...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Image...20GB HDD ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 NoteBook -
It has 2 be sucking air from one of slit cut areas ?
-
Thank's Taryln, And let me put it another way. THERE IS NO NOISE ON THIS LAPTOP !!!!
Congratulaions on getting your N71JQ. Don't forget us over here in the N61 lounge. I'm sure we all will be checking out your lounge to see how the N71 is doing.
-
Tesla, I got mine from newegg and they just ship it in the Asus factory box.
I can measure the box when I get home from work if someone dosen't post it before then. -
I will measure it when I get home from work if someone has not already.
-
Really? I got mine from newegg.ca and it came it a big newegg box with air cushons and stuff.
-
Let's hear about battery life. What can we expect on power saver browsing the web and typing documents?
-
Ok mine came in. I ordered it from Power Notebooks. The box is 18.00" x 18.25" x 12.50"
It's going to take me a couple of hours to get it fit for use (plus I have to work), but I'll start posting a mini review from it tonight. -
Okay so I am having trouble which laptop would be better for me after reading all the posts. Seems like N61JQ-X1 is a good laptop for its price. Still I can't decide my mind between this laptop and Lenovo Ideapad Y550P that i got for $1189.15
This is the spec of y550p i got.
Intel® Core i7-820QM Processor ( 3.06GHz 1333MHz 8MB )
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64
NVIDIA GeForce GT 240M 1024MB
4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz
15.6 " HD Wide LED 1366x768
500GB 5400 RPM
I heard that difference between i7-720QM and i7-820QM is almost negligible and the thing that I like the most about the N61JQ is the hd and the gpu. Still, I am having trouble deciding because I am a heavy multi-tasker. Between the cpu and gpu+hd which one should I pick? -
I would go with the ASUS...you get more for your money. The A1 comes with 500gb 7200rpm HD and much better vid card.
-
what's the difference between A1 and X1 other than the hard drive space? i wouldn't really care about how huge the hd is
-
Alrighty guys, here are the pics:
http://picasaweb.google.com/wahmad1988/ASUSN61JQA1?feat=directlink -
I'd go for the Asus. And not just because I have one, the Y550 was also one of the notebooks I was considering before I got my X1. But it costs the same has worse GPU and slower hdd (even though it's 500gb) and I wouldn't think that the difference between 820 and 720 would be worth it. I'm a multitasker myself and the 720 seems to be perfect so far. Plus I'm sure the 820 has to generate even more heat then the 720.
Two big things why Asus over Lenovo: USB 3.0 and 2 year warranty!
If anything I would get the X1 (or A1) for $999 and get a 4gb ddr3 stick which would cost you $1180 altogether. -
i'd cancelled the order for lenovo. I am trying to get a cooler for this laptop which one would you guys prefer?
-

Comments:
1. Looks great
2. Very fast
3. Heat may be an issue if you are an intense gamer (get a cooling pad)
4. Keyboard will take getting used to (it's new, so thats normal), but it seems sturdy and responsive.
5. USB 3.0 is great
6. Quiet
7. Overall: 8/10
Any questions? You're going to have to wait because I have to install Win7 Ultimate. But ask away
-
i think i'm going to get the zalman nc2000 for mine. i'm open to suggestions too though if anybody has any.
-
I was trying to order from Amazon but this is what they say
"The notebook comes with a 1 year global warranty, one month zero bright dot guaranty, free two-way standard shipping, twenty-four hour tech support seven days a week, and a one year accidental damage warranty, protecting the notebook from drops, fire, spills and surge." newegg offers 1 year warranty too. Do you guys know where i can buy the laptop with 2 years warranty? -
Hi,
I just bought a Backlite keyboard from ebay for mine. and I got it plugged in.. but when I do FN+F4 my keyboard doesnt lite up.. the keyboard part works fine.. just no backlite. and I plugged in the extra cable on the back of the keyboard to... any ideas? -
I'm actually not sure now what happened. Either they changed the warranty or something weird is going on, cause I swear it was 2 years. Also when you go here http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=ZfpnPRZ5UxVOtrHJ on the very bottom it says it comes with two year warranty but it depends on the country.
Another thing it could be is that in the box you get a little paper from Asus for registration. And it says you have to register your product within 60 days to get *extra (I'm pretty sure it said extra) 1 year of accidental damage.
Can anybody clarify how it is with warranty? If not I will have to call Asus tonight. -
I don't know what happened but I saw this on newegg customer reviews
"Pros: Another good Asus product, Works for now...
Cons: Screen Resoultion...
When purchased, the listing clearly stated a 2 year warranty. I have the printout. When received it showed a 1 year warranty. Newegg support said, deal with it and updated the page to show a one year warranty.
Other Thoughts: Contact newegg first to confirm that any Asus product has the normal 2 year warrnanty defore buying!" -
I just ordered the NC2000 after reading this:
http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&number=9&artpage=3392&articID=813
Basically I figured since my N61 (with 160g intel g2 SSD) is an investment, I'm not going cheap with my laptop cooler, I'm going to get the very best. -
I am going 2 use this cooler
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16834997727 -
Awesome! Question... is the whole keyboard backlit? Or is it just the keys themselves?
-
I just called newegg and they said they will look into it and should get back to me in 3-4 days. I will also call Asus tonight to see if Canada and US qualifies as countries with 2 years Global warranty. This really concerns as I know for sure that when I was purchasing it, it said 2 years. Bull****
