yeah thats not bad i think a grand is a fair price for this laptop if you get an extra years cover for 80 quid that aint bad . although i never fall for the extra cover addon they try and sell you . tbh if its going to go wrong it tends to happen in the first year . is there any way of getting updates to work in asus live update software ? or an easier way to keep it up to date . thanks
-
Asus liveupdate is junk lol, never works so uninstalled!
-
fair enough lol ill stop trying to get it to work then
-
Thank you! btw anybody have any idea how i can keep my bio, system, utilities etc driver updated? (without using the asus update program)

this theme really suits the n61,don't forget to put the calender gadget up in the right corner(it looks cool with the theme)
download theme(3rd party theme)---- http://djabytown.deviantart.com/art/Dark-Agility-Visual-Style-148691785----(download button on the left of the first picture, kinda hard to spot)
how to enable third party themes--- http://windows7themes.net/how-to-install-windows-7-themes.html
i used the second method in the link, it worked well.
and don't forget to read the readme file that the theme comes with,
after doing everything that it says, restart and enjoy.
here is the link to some more amazing themes(30 to be exact)

sorry i had fraps running in the background.

omg... just realised n61jq cant play warcraft frozen throne at full screen. it doesnt automatically stretch it to full screen like other monitors. anybody knows how to slove this?
-
Sorry for replying to such an old post but I'm going through reading this entire thread because I just got my X1 not long ago and I can echo all these sentiments. no need for fresh install just uninstall the few annoying bloats.. I love the laptop so far. The screen resolution doesn't bother me too much.. actually I appreciate the lower native resolution since games can look crisp and performance stays decent from not having a ridiculously high resolution. All around a great laptop for gaming and doing light work.

Newegg has always knocked it out of the park for me. I suppose the only time I've ever had to use their customer service was back in like 98 or 99 when they forgot to include some memory in an order. A simple phone call where I was placed on hold then a manager came on and verified some info. Next day air of the memory no questions asked.
I suppose if they ever misstep on me I'll reconsider but so far I've pretty much gotten all my components and peripherals from them for 10-11 years and have had nothing but great experiences. Their site says they've been in business since 2001, but I could have sworn I've ordered stuff from them previous to 2000, maybe I'm wrong and just getting old and the memory incident was in 2001.
-
Mine was made in 01-2010 and it came with a asus branded windows 7 recovery DVD and a driver/util dvd. Are you saying I still need that 14G partition to utilize the media that came with the unit?
I purchased Home Premium during the $50 pre-order thing, I'm think I can probably just use the serial on the bottom to reinstall from that disc If I ever had to.. -
Many people confuse Newegg wth Egghead. Egghead shut down their retail around the same time that Newegg came out. The two aren't related but, it is a common confusion.
I don't know if this is what you may be thinking but, it is common. -
Demon's Souls is fantastic if you give it a couple hours to get it's legs and to get acquainted with how much it likes to kick your rear end..
-
i prefer my theme to that one , http://i44.tinypic.com/2nu0kle.jpg
-
I have that. What a wonderfully frustrating difficult game! I suck so badly at it and it is the only game that makes me wish I had a cheat code for!
-
Why would Asus give a liveupdate program that never works?
Maybe its not implemented properly as yet. I'm sure there is a future use for this. -
i find gaming on laptops quite hard . its ok mapping the keys with xpadder but never seem to be able to configure them properly using a ps2 pad . really needs keyboard and mouse .and if your gona do that you might aswell buy a desktop .
-
I'm not sure the 5730 would have the horsepower to drive 3 displays with any quality or framerate.. the great thing about the N61 is the lower native res which keeps games sharp and fast.
-
No, I remember Egghead.. they were software though right?
I think I'm just getting old I could have sworn the memory incident was before me moving to NY in 2000. -
I played Heavy Rain for a bit last night, the wife even liked watching me play that one. Definitely a completely different experience than FPS or RPG though. Think Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy) if you've played that.
I digress, I appear to have steered the conversation off the N61JQ topic.
-
This brings up an interesting question, is anyone using a notebook lap-pad that they like that has enough room for me to use a mouse off to the right? I was trying to play Risen the other night and it's nearly impossible with the trackpad.. Torchlight wasn't bad, but would probably be much better.
I'd like to still game leaning back on the chair or sofa, at least i'd still be within sight of my lovely wife instead of slinking off into a cave..
-
Nah you can blow away the recovery partition and install using the supplied disc. Or at least I was able to. Couldn't deal with knowing there was 14gb of free space on the drive I couldn't use.
-
Apparently I have 1066 Hyundai memory. (533 Mhz)
If for some reason I ever feel the need to upgrade to 8G i'll get 1333. -
I usually keep it until I need the space.
-
Hey guys! looking to get the X1 pretty soon... for those who partitioned their hard drive how much space would you recommend for the OS/Programs/Games.. 60-80gigs seem good? Thx, Jake
-
any word on a 9 cell battery?
-
Does Asus normally provide 9 cell batteries after launch for its laptops or are the battery sizes released the same time when the laptop is released and that is that?
I would like to know as well. -
I downloaded the bios update.. but it cant be open, theres this list which ask me to choose an appropriate program to open it.... i thought its gonna be something like double click on it and it will auto update/install for you...
oh dear im sucha noob. what should i do....
-
You need to use winflash (should have been installed from the factory check your programs ) or awdflash from a boot disk. Personally I would make sure you actually need to flash it before doing so.
-
Is there a reason why you want to flash your bios? As far as I know most of the n61jq's were released with the latest bios on their site. In fact there hasn't been a single update on any driver yet.

Hmm. i have this problem with the screen. i ran wc3 to play dota... but the screen doesnt automatically stretch the game to max like any other screen i used before. Im aware that the max fronzen frozen throne resolution is lower than my asus n61jq's native resolution.... but by right it should stretch the game to fit the entire screen but it didnt. it remained at the max resolution of wc3 leaving black space on the right and left side.
-
It's an ATI card thing. You have to change the resolution to something not the native resolution by clicking on the desktop and changing the screen resolution. Just change it to the lowest (800x600 I believe). Apply that change. Then open up ATI's CCC manager. Go to Desktops and Display options and on monitor one click on the little triangle and click on Configure... and then change the resolution back to the native one and now the "full screen" option should be there. Not exactly sure the directions, but it's something close to this at least. =]
-
doesnt work
-
Don't do it you "noob"! You really should know what your doing before messing around with a bios update. If your new laptop is working great than stay off that support site so you won't be tempted to muck it up!

Maybee instead of looking for a pad you should look for a mouse like this one but for gaming instead. I love this thing it works great on any surface and I do mean any. Couch, pants, blanket, pillow anything.
-
I would keep it unless you really need the space. Check out this advice by Donald from PowerNotebooks. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5844150&postcount=220

Your X1 hard drive already comes partitioned. There is 3 partitions. The OS is 74gb. And there is a recovery partition of 14gb. And the rest is on the last partition. If you were reading in this Lounge they were talking about getting rid of the partitions not adding one.

Were the other screens you used before widescreen (16:9, 16:10) or 4:3? Here are some links that might be useful:

Hey, where can i buy a better battery for the JQ version, i need a t least a 9 cell battery>
-
Hey guys, Anandtech has a review of the N61JV up (core i5, nvidia gt325 optimus). The chassis is exactly the same as our N61JQ so it applies to it as well.
Here's the link: review
They seem to like it except for the half-sized zero on the numeric pad and the quality of the screen. -
I don't need professional level accuracy, just something that's good enough. Sounds like a great idea. I need a mouse as well anyway, might as well try it. Thanks.
-
Guys, do you think mod is possible on the N61? backlit keyboard
Soulsaber was able to install a backlit keyboard on the UL30. I'm guessing this can be done on the N61 using his approach and with the G51 keyboard from the parts store.
Sorry to bring this up again, but I really want a backlit keyboard. -
I have one. They are a little awkward to use with a notebook this large. The one I have works with a 17" but, when you use a laptop this large, it is a little uncomfortable trying to use a mouse because most people don't use their mouse exactly to the right of the keyboard. It is a more diagonal position.
It is a little hard to explain but, I will post some pictures so you can understand better. -
Didn't someone already try to replace the keyboard? Knowing how the g51 keyboard is backlit would be a big help. Are the LEDs in the individual keys and if so how are they powered? Or is the keyboard merely transparently lit from lights inside the chasis itself?
-
What do you guys think of the G60JX? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i5+Processor+-+Blue/Black/9736955.p?id=1218164036446&skuId=9736955
I want a new laptop, but I can't decide which model I want. The N61JQ seems nice, but I'm concerned about the screen resolution (although many here say it is not a reason to buy another system). However, I will play games on it, but not games that are that graphically intense (I have a PS3 and X360 for that). BF2 may be the most intense gaming I would do on the new laptop.
Thanks. -
It is a nice laptop. I am a little confused. If you are looking at the g60jx because of the lower resolution on the n61jq, they both have the same resolution.
The Nvidia 360M on the g60 is more powerful then the ATI HD5730 on the n61 but, the n61 has a better processor. Since the default Ghz of the i5 is a little better then the n61, you will probably see a few more frames per second on the g60 unless you play a game that takes advantage of all the n61's cores.
Other then that, the g60 is about a pound heavier and has less bells-and-whistles. The N61 has 2.0MP webcam vs. 1.3MP, multi-touch touchpad, usb 3.0, etc.
To me, it is a wash. Saying that though, I would still have purchased my n61 over it. -
Thanks for the reply. To clarify, I realize that both have the same screen resolution, so I'm wondering what system is better.
The G60JX apparently gets pretty hot, which is not good. I plan on going to Best Buy to check it out to get an idea if the LCD is something that will bother me.
I also am looking at the Asus N61J-X2. I don't know when Powernotebooks.com will begin carrying them, but I've shot an e-mail to the Sales Dept. to hopefully find out. -

X versions are only available from the big box stores. Since PowerNotebooks.com is a Channel custom builder we will never offer the X version of ASUS laptops.
