ste84ven, If you post a review I will put a link to it in the review section of the first page of this Lounge.

Will do. I'm going to try to squeeze sometime in tonight to start playing with it.
-
This is the only specs I could find on this battery. If you open the specs tab it says it weighs 16.6 oz. http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/de...W_Skus-_-90+NED1B2100Y&AcquirgyID=11767691#TS
Her is a link for this battery in the ASUS store but it has no specs and it is out of stock.

I've been playing with my laptop since I got it yesterday and Im mostly liking it. Im having trouble keeping my wireless connection stable, and the screens display can be troublesome at times, like I'll have to turn down the brightness or turn it up in certain situations and even then its not how I want it to be. I remember earlier in this thread someone posted some instructions for changing their color settings that helped smooth things out.
I played WoW for a while on it and I don't think had any problems with it. -
Ok...I will write a review about the laptop. However, before I do that, I have one small annoying problem.
Once and a while, my laptop showed "96% Available. Plugged in, not charging." How does it possibly happen? when it's plugged, it should be charging, right? What I did was I unplugged the cable, wait for couple minutes, and plugged it back again. And then it's working and showed "Plugged in, charging."
Did anyone get this problem? if you did, how did you manage to fix this? Thanks. -
The same thing is happening to me. I called Asus yesterday about the problem and they said its normal and it prevents the battery from charging often and makes the battery life last longer. Asus also said at the 95% mark of battery power it should start charging.
-
mine says 100% Fully Charged
-
Risco posted a screen calibration that some found helpfull. It is listed on the first page of this forum under the questions section. The first link is the actual calibration and the second link has instructions on installing it. We have had some other posts with recomendations on this but I didn't list them. If someone goes back and finds them let me know and I will put them on the first page.
-
I also get this. I think it's normal and would not worry about it.
-
I was Wondering if anyone can help me with ASUS N61JQ? I am asking that is this laptop overheating a lot? In addition, are there any freezing problems and blue screens?
-
Here's some info on lithium ion batteries: http://batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm
High temperature and high charge are bad for battery capacity (it will lose capacity more quickly under these conditions). The optimal charge level is actually only 40%. The only reason they charge it up fully is so... you can actually use the laptop unplugged if you wish
. 95% must be better than 100% for slowing capacity loss, but still high enough to get almost all of the battery life if you go unplugged.
-
I would say that this laptop is not overheating a lot. It obviously depends on what you are doing, but in my case, it isn't. I used it, mostly, to play some pretty graphic intensive game, such as Crysis and Dragon Age, watch movies, and heavy browsing (15-20 tabs at once). It can get warm, but not overheating.
I have never had freezing problem or BSOD. Some people had these problems though, at least once or twice, but personally I haven't had these problem. Check out the first page of this thread under BSOD and Freeze up to get more information (Thanks Allyw123) -
There is no fix for this because all laptops do this. You do not want it to always be charging because it would eventually overcharge your battery, killing it. There is some threshold when it will begin charging again, I think it's around 96%. The threshold varies on different laptops and vendors however.
-
I too show that my battery is at 96% and not charging, but I haven't noticed any change in battery time when not plugged in so I didn't worry about it.
-
I also never had overheating or freezing issues, but I experienced one BSOD when I was using Firefox.
-
Not so happy now. Got a BSOD from running Windows Experience Index.
Also, my 7's theme is white, and there's this one black pixel in the bottom left corner. running imagingassociates pixel fixer didnt work. Really wanna bring it back to DSE as im within the 14days, but i figured they'll be stuck with a laptop, as for them to return the N61jq to asus it needs to have 5 dead pixels.
oh wells, i changed my theme to black, damn why do i have to notice that one pixel. -
No BSOD's here yet. I removed a bit of the "bloatware" (particularly the "auto update" software) but kept most of the ASUS software on the system. I noticed that the Intel Matrix software (mentioned earlier in the thread) was already installed, and I recently installed the ATI 10.3 beta Catalyst. So far basic websurfing (Firefox), Microsoft Office/Outlook usage, and Crysis demo seem to be working fine here...
As far as the laptop screen goes, not sure how it's looking as I have the laptop closed and plugged into a 22" monitor most of the time and am using an external (USB) keyboard... -
i also got a BSOD with the Windows Index thing a few weeks ago but that was the only time I've ever gotten a BSOD on this laptop, and I've used it extensively.
sucks about your dead pixel though -
I think it idles after reaching 100% so the battery doesnt get too hot to prolong life
-
You should return it back to DSE mate and make the most of their 14-day return policy. You have spent a good amount of your money, you shouldn't compromise anything!
You may just wanna tell them you changed your mind rather than mention the dead pixel as they may not be as easy to deal with. -
well i read waaaay too many pages on this forum but hey it helped me a lot, and reinforced my initial decision that this laptop is the best you can find for this price point. I dont expect a perfect laptop at such a reasonable price. At $969 on amazon i will be purchasing the x1 soon and taking advantage of the extra year warranty through a visa program, so like the a1 i will be covered for 2 years which is a long enough time for me.
Thanks to everyone that contributed to this forum ill be sure to check back with any questions/concerns once i buy this thing and use it.
Edit: 1 quick question for anyone taht used the visa signature warranty extension program, did this extend the ADW warranty along with the parts and labor warrnty? -
Bad news everyone the 9 cell battery for the G50VT-X5 does not work for this laptop. While it does connect, it sticks out the back in such a way that it is impossible to open the display. I've uploaded images
http://picasaweb.google.com/a.ruggles/LaptopBattery#
Unless they have a different 9-cell battery design there is no way the 9 cell will work in this laptop. -
that's a bummer. If that means a battery that will prop up the laptop at an angle, at least it'll mean extra airflow under it.
-
The JQ comes with a 30 day no dead pixel warranty from ASUS. You should return it.
-
For stuck pixels try UDPixel. It's a program which helps you find dead/stuck pixels and also attempts to fix them.

It's worth a try before sending it back to ASUS. -
I wonder if anyone could keep track of all the latest drivers for the system, with a link on the first post. It seems the drivers are not all on the Asus n61jq section on their site but rather scattered around and found only by looking at individual components (ie VGA). Thanks to anyone who can.
-
Then what the heck is that reseller selling?
-
I don't think this is the same battery. The number on it is different. I am emailing ASUS to clear this up and will post the reply tomorrow.
-
Will the warranty on the X1 be voided if I upgrade to a larger capacity hard drive and upgrade the ram?
-
Here is a site that has both part numbers linked to the same battery.
http://www.global-laptop-batteries....h-asus-A33-M50-90-NED1B2100Y-m50-battery.html
Honestly I don't think they've designed or built the 9-cell version for this laptop generation yet. -
No, as long as you don't break any of the warranty stickers while performing said operations.
-
heh, but I want the N61JQ =( I mean i bought it on the 17th, today's the 20th, I'll try to get them to swap for another N61JQ come monday.
cool, went to google it, it says it must be a bright dot, of any colour except black, well mine's black =( i mean it looks black. and i can't massage it back to life as there's the glossy plastic above the lcd

one question to the resellers here.
By when do you expect the stocks to start keeping pace with the demand?
It is very important for me to know this.
Thank you! -
Booya!!!
Got my optical drive caddy to slap in a second HD. I'll post benchmarks and pics whenever I get the chance. -
I have a new colour profile, for any of those who want to test!

-
I'm looking forward to the benchmarks!! and pics. If the performance is about the same (I'm expecting a little less than the native HD bay) I will sure buy one and then I would only be missing my SSD, which will have to wait until I get more money and the prices come down.
-
Can't wait to hear about it. I already ordered a SSD to be shipped with my laptop so this had better work. It'd be great if you could post the caddy model and link with the bench and pics.
@jojo
Since HDD and ODD bays are both SATA, performance should be exactly the same. The caddy shouldn't have any controller interface on it to slow down the connection. If the ODD bay didn't swap the data and power connections you could plug a SATA HDD drive straight into the laptop motherboard. -
can anyone tell me how this laptops performance runs when connected to 1920 x 1080 monitors? games on high setting capable still? does it lag? or if i turn off the laptop screen and make the 1920 x 1080 screen the main screen it should not lag correct?
i heard on youtube this laptop cant run good connected to 1920 x 1080 monitor
games or photoshop. basically they were saying this is only good for its screen, any other screen it will lag and just be like a slow dual core or slow gpu, does anyone who have 1920 x 1080 monitor can run some tests?
on youtube if you search n61jq with some game names, theres videos of people playing this smoothly online with the laptop screen, but one guy connected to external monitor and got lag and extemely low ffps and low gpu performance, he basically said this laptop is useless with 1920 x 1080 monitors and the only time this laptops gpu is good when it is on a small resolution screen.
so anyone who can prove this wrong please do so..
also anyone planning to buy this laptop to use with external monitors, might as well forget it and just get a desktop or laptop with a better gpu. -

It is impossible to tell. ASUS did not expect the demand for the ASUS N61JQ-A1 so they did not schedule enough production slots for it. Since production slots are planned for months in advance, they really have to move things around to make more room for the ASUS N61JQ-A1.
Really, the best thing to do if you know this is what you want is pick a reseller, place your order, and patiently wait.
Not fun I know, but that is the reality of it. -
While not quite what you're looking for, I'm running mine on an 1680x1050 screen, and Bioshock 2 and Modern Warfare 2 both run perfectly at full resolution with all of the highest settings.
-
Anyone know at what temp the GPU throttles at for this unit?
-
nice knolly. thanks for this information, a double confirmation is always the best.
i know someone out there has a 1920 x 1080 p 22" atleast or even their 40"+ hd tv?
we should get some input on how the HD works on the video card with 1080p..ive read through this whole 219 pages and no one has mentioned this yet..
also through HDMI would be nice info...thanks to all who helps out! -
1920x1080 is only 18% more pixels than 1680x1050. At worst, you should see an 18% drop in FPS in graphics-heavy apps. A friend who worked at nVidia once told me the FPS and pixel count are roughly 1:1 correlated (or better) in graphics-limited apps.
-
That makes no sense to me. Can you please post the youtube link as I cannot find the one you are talking about. I have not tried games but I tried hooking this up to my 52" Sony XBR and it looked great. I would not make a statment that you should forget about hooking this up to an external monitor off of one youtube video. Maybe this person is cluless on how to hook it up.
-
If you read the link you posted it says the dot could look black. The reference you were talking about says that on an all black background you should be able to see the dot as another color.
-
But then that begs the question, why would a reseller sell this battery for this machine with the knowledge that it cannot function with it?
-
Yeah I'm starting to wonder Adamal. I am attatching another response from Ken at GenTech but I'm starting to wonder if he is forgeting about the sunken hinge on this screen. He says the battery sticks out an inch but it does not prevent the screen from opening. I will email him back and I sent an email to Donald at PowerNotebooks. Plus I am waiting for a response from ASUS which I probobaly won't get until monday.
Greg W wrote:
You list a 9 cell battery at $189 for the N61JQ-A1. I did not know ASUS was providing this battery for this laptop. Is this a misprint or can I buy one of these from you?
Hello Greg,
The N61, M50, M60, G50 and G51 are build by the same chassis, they share the same battery. yes you can buy from us if you want.

Greg W wrote:
Ken, Does this battery stick out the back and if so wont it stop the screen from opening on the N61JQ? Or is it thicker and require another lid for the bottom?
Greg,
Yes it does stick out to the back about 1 inch, it won't stop screen from opening and it's not thicker. it fits just like 6 cell but longer.
Ken -
Well you can verify my info from all the pics I put up. If you look at how the N61 is hinged it is different than the G50 and G51 series. You can also see if the battery sticks out more than a couple of centimeters max the N61 will not open. I tried looking at pics of other ASUS models and the N61 series seems to have a different hinge design than the others I found. However the connection for the battery definitely works.
-
I'm guessing he just tested it by plugging it in and noticing that it fits fine, but may have neglected to open it. Also maybe that shop has a different 9-cell battery.
-
I connected the laptop to my HDTV. I played Crysis 64Bit (it is the only game I have other then WoW and Oblivion) on the laptop. With ALL settings on High, the 1366x768 resolution was flawless. At 1920x1080, there was a slight loss in frames that was noticeable but, it was still smooth and wasn't laggy. You will need to knock a few settings to medium to get the same flow as 1366x768.
I do need to note that I have an ASUS Essentio CS5111 attached to my TV for streaming movies. I also have attached several other laptops to the TV. The N61JQ is the first computer to drive the TV in full 1080p (1920x1200) with perfect centering and the best picture quality of any of the systems. I thought there was an issue with my TV since the other systems slightly drop resolution in order to center the picture (losing sharpness and picture quality). Now I know I have a kick- LCD HDTV and after doing this test for you, I will be playing Crysis in 42" in stead of the 16" display. It was just beautiful!
Feel free to send me any other games that you want me to test. ;-)
