There is already so much data right here at Notebookreview (just search IC Diamond), and as you say, all over the internet, comparing the various thermal pastes that any more study would seem totally redundant and unnecessary, except for one's own curiosity.

In almost all scientific testing (found mostly on the various brand's websites), as well as user testing, IC Diamond has shown itself to be the best performer if only by a little bit. Remember when comparing these compounds they almost always compare the high end brands, and rarely include the "stock" compounds...so be aware of that when you look at these studies.

My comp keeps crashing when i start a game with the new catalyst 10.3.

    I followed these instructions precisely

The driver install and all, even the ccc version is right.
But when i run a game, at the menu screen or start of the game, the screen just turns black
I cant alt-tab, ctrl-alt-del or anything; have to power off

    Can anyone help

Which game? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers? Also, try the drivers off of the ASUS site again and see if you are still having the same issue.

I would try to roll back the driver of the video card first to see if thats the problem. If you need help with that let us know and welcome to the Owners Lounge! :D

If you open up your event viewer, I think there is a way to export the System and Applications logs. Send me those and I will see what I can figure out.

I will say this, they are way too high for comfort. If you have all of the intakes clear of blockage, you may want to think RMA.

If you got it from Powernotebooks or XoticPC, you are in good hands. Gve them a call as they are more then helpful to their customers.

ive tried installing the new driver after uninstalling the ol one twice. i just realised that running the directx diagnostics tool also crashes the comp. i tried running crysis (64,dx10), supreme commander 2 both of which crash at the menu screen; and command and conquer 3 which crashed when the game started.

What a great first laptop you chose! Congratulations on making your first laptop choice a good one. Even with all of the competitor laptops coming out, nothing comes close to the N61JQ. I still love mine, take it almost everywhere and use it all the time.

Look in c:\windows and see if our system is writing a MEMORY.DMP file with any of these crashes. If it is, I may be able to help diagnose the issue.

Have you installed any other applications on the system?

There are some ways I may be able to help diagnose the issue. Hopefully we can get some Event logs or MEMORY.DMP's. Otherwise, I may be able to do some digging on the system (remote session) to see what I can find out.

Ahhh... The ASUS drivers work fine? Hmmm.. You may want to try downloading the 10.3 drivers again. Maybe from another site, if you didn't use their downloader.

It seems like there are lots of driver issues going on. Maybe someone with an actual working N61 :( can post the most common driver updates they have installed and that are working with some links. Maybe also some most recent updates for programs like powergear...etc ? What yall I think. That would help out a lot of people !

Yahoo amazon just charged my bank card $1070.02. This os happy news for me on day 54 of waiting. That happens to be the exact cost of my n61jq-a1.

Amazon still says unshipped, but...I think their site is just running behind.

So when you uninstall the 10.3 update everything works fine. I don't notice any difference after 10.3 why don't you just forget about it for awhile. We always get so obssesed with finding new drivers. If its working leave it alone I say. When it stops working well then go looking for new drivers.
Also I will say that I am glad I kept the restore partition. It is fast and works well if things get to messed up and you need to start fresh.

Or maybe Asus could could get there sh^# together with driver updates.
What a terrible support website!
I think if we all keep giving a heads up on updates it might be the best way to go. I don't want to list them on the first page and have users asking how to fix the driver updates that screw up.

There are sockets for both ribbons, and the keyboard fits just fine. But the ASUS N61JQ-A1 thinks you have installed an external device and throws an error message and Recovery sequence. Windows cannot Recover so it says to shut down, disconnect the external device and reboot.

I will try it again when we have more time, but right now we are building about 100 ASUS G73JH's and our production line is a bit tied up.

It was german Asus site I think bro. Yeah...Asus really should do something with updating all their pages. like even getting a support number or chat with live help is crazy to find. I always talk to same guy live chat lol...checking on RMA. I think no one finds the link and they only employ one guy!

Matty, I think your sarcasim went right over everybodies head. I was ready to go to blows with you. Man when you just throw SSD in your post and leave it at that its not going to fly. We want to hear everything about the SSD and I mean everything. Then maybe we can get to the bottom of the squealing noise. Welcome to the lounge, why don't you give us a comprehensive review SSD, squealing noises and all and I will post it on the first page in the review section.
P.S- You might have missed it but the moderator did smack down the troll for using the word Crap. Opps I used it too!
Be carefull about using the word throttling here. That is a very sensitive word that you need to back up with Data.
As far as the WEI score goes we have hashed that out here and come to the conclusion that it is a worthless sales tool that you should not be concerned with.

The keyboard side isn't working. Not only does it need to plug in but, the leads need to match their assignments. I can't see ASUS making it all that different. They usually use a keyboard that fits multiple notebooks.

Donald is going to try again when he gets some time. He is going to get some pictures of the connectors taken and get the part number off of the keyboard. Hopefully, we will find some alternative keyboards and/or find the pin layout for this keyboard. The best case would be that attempt #2 has the keyboard working. It is great to have a retailer, like Donald, involved in this project. I can't even begin to express how helpful that really is.

There is lots of hope here. It is just that attempt #1 wasn't successful.

I wonder if we get the backlight keyboard mod to work...it would stay on all the time or you could update your function key software. Sounds like fun! The G60 keyboard was very nice...would be sweet if that would work. Man cant wait to get my N61 back so I can start playing around! :p

I bought my N61 strictly for gaming.... this little rig runs very very fast.
I've recently been playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 on it with everything maxed out, snagging around 70fps without nary a burp.

I originally had a G73 (which was really cool) but it croaked on me after about a week and I was a tad upset until I saw this little gem. (saved me about 500 bucks as well)

I also have a year old G50VT-X1 which is sweet but it can't hold a candle to this N61.

And it also runs cool for me when I use a Zalman NC2000 Laptop cooler stand, CPU's average around 65C at full load and the video card around 72C at load.... that laptop cooler really kicks it down about 10 degrees .

so far it's handled every game I've thrown at it really well. I hook it up to an LG 23" High Def monitor with a HDMI cable and it looks fantastic

Im aware WEI is quite useless, ib just curious if the latency on the 1333 ram screws with its uselessness..

What kind, where did you get it, How much, did you install it, your thoughts on the difference and did you find the extra cost worth it?
I don't have the 1333 ram but if I remember correctly it did not change the 5.9 score. Now the real question is what did the SSD do to your score. Is it still 5.9 for the hard drive? Not that we give a rats A## about the WEI score. :D

Well it looks like we have all similar taste...who knows we may be all ready to upgrade at the same time and buy the same model lol! I was reviewing another keyboard backlight mod on a ASUS. It would be interesting to know where the original spot was landed on an actual G50 / G60 Keyboard. I guess Donald is going to be looking into that or I could of the other day if I would of know! :p

It looks like this shows us how to do it, but this is a smaller Asus model so we can't use the same board.

Is it possible we have very similar motherboard as the G60 and the spots may be there for us to land. The one I had to return had one hard drive like ours...some guys put in i7 CPUs instead of the i5s without any problems. If thats the case then this should be very easy. see how our f3 / f4 keys are missing the adjustment functions.
