On another note.....I went to best buy and looked at a 1080p 15.6" laptop and now I regret all the ing I did about the N61 lcd. 1080p on a 15" is so freaking hard to see!
to all of those here that said so, you were right. sorry for all the ing.
however, 1080p on my 23" external is just beautiful, and the one game I play the most right now (unreal tournament 3) runs perfectly at high and 1080.
-
No, i wasnt!
@king of rapture- you got it correct the first time, mate. -
Yeah I am offshore right now...will be back home in about a week. hoping my sweet n61 will be waiting for me. I will kiss it...if its working...maybe rub cd rom drive LOL! ??? Not a problem on the link bro
-
sorry, i shouldn't have done that even if it was sarcastic.

Here is some silly temp info for the thermal dorks here.
After 2 hours of SC2 play. The Zalman N2000 is used at all times.Attached Files:

I played assassins creed with this thing before. I just stopped it because my system just locks up randomly and it scares me. Even though I installed the Intel matrix storage driver, it still locks up and until now I don't know the reason why. For the gpu, 91C is the max that I get. Cpu about 89-90C.
Now I play nfs shift for about 30 minutes when I'm in the mood. Gpu and cpu max is nearly the same. Gpu is at 85-89C. Cpu 81-85C.
Though I want to play longer, I can't because of the temps that I get. But if I get lower numbers, then I would play longer. -
Have you tried playing nfs shift or assassins creed with your machine? -
Yes it gets hot.
-
I have neither of those games, are there demos of either one available?
-
I'm not sure. Maybe there are. Is that the only game you play with your n61?
-
Well Donald, we are going to know in a few days. I am getting out all of my electronics equipment anyway. Is it cheesy that most of it is from Radio Shack. lol
-
I play multiple source engine games(TF2, HL2), Far cry 2, Unreal 3, and modern warfare 2 in terms of graphically intense games and have not had any heat issues. temps max out at about 82 for me, the touchpad and where my left hand rests only gets slightly warm
-
Assassin's Creed always gave some of my system problems. I do not know why but it did.
-
Woohoo, just scored a free copy of Dirt 2 for finding a soundcard on a forum for someone!
yay! -
sweet !
-
MMMmmmm..... Free...... *drool*
-
if we could get wiring schematics on the cable in the g60 compared to the n61 we should easily be able to make it work ... I think.
-
2 bad I dont have keyboard + laptop out here. I have everything know to man out here for electronics....

Anyone found linux graphics drivers with hardware support for the 5730?
-
I haven't looked in about 2 weeks. I will let you know if I do and if you find them, please let me know.
-
It looks like there has been success in hacking the 10.3 Linux drivers to work with the Mobility HD5730. I am not sure where the hacked drivers are or if they hack them with a script but, it does look as though there is a way to get full 3D from them.
I am, though, reading broken messages from all over the place so, I may be confusing the messages. Which Linux distro are you using? -
What is the consensus on the 9cell battery? Is it worth starting a facebook campaign?
-
Facebook campaigns don't do anything. It would be better to have everyone start contacting ASUS requesting it. Honestly I'd be shocked if ASUS doesn't come out with a 9 cell in the future. As of right now I think the consensus is there is no 9 cell for this laptop.
-
I just installed Ubuntu 10.4 beta. Seems the latest fglrx don't support xorg or the 5xxx cards, bummer.
-
I think they don't support the latest version of xorg that comes with the beta.
-
Whats is the best linux version to put on a netbook david ? I was checking on linux mint...looked pretty cool
-
I use Ubuntu as the base for andLinux. I used Debian for years and Ubuntu is fork of Debian that has really surpassed it. The package system is one of the best. Getting an Ubuntu based OS should almost ensure a good one.
If you want a RPM based system, I would suggest something Fedora based. CentOS is pretty popular and is supported well.
There are just so many that it is hard to know them all. I have heard that Mint is a good one and from what I understand, it is based on Ubuntu and is tuned for multimedia. I can't see where you could go wrong with it. I say, "go for it!". Let us know how you like it.
-
There is a version of Ubuntu for netbooks. I think it's called Ubuntu Netbook remix.
-
Thanks Adamal. I read it as Notebook until I saw your post.
Yes, that one is the best one at this time. There are more coming that should kick a little butt. Some of the newer netbooks could probably handle a full distro though. I wouldn't put the netbook distros on anything with the newer 1.3Ghz dual core pentium CULV chips. They can handle a full distro. -
I just checked in Amazon.com, and FYI, the price for X1 is now $1,169.99 and the A1 is now $1,124.99. I think Amazon.com has already reflected the price increase that Justin @ XoticPC mentioned before.
But what confused me was why is it A1 is cheaper than X1? I thought A1 has 2 years warranty, which should make it more expensive, right? I don't know I might be wrong. -
too bad, the price is up again. I think the price represents short-supply more than the price-hike.
Also, the A1 also has a 500 gb hard drive as opposed to the 320 in X1, apart from the warranty coverage difference. so it is definitely odd thatthe X1 is more expensive than the A1. -
they're not from the same retailers like I said before. The X1 is being sold by Forrest Computer and the A1 is from Buy.com.
Just because it's on Amazon doesn't mean Amazon is the one selling it. -
You can lead a wishmaster to water but you can't make him drink. You missed another good deal wish! Those are some harsh custom fees. Must be a whole lot of smuggling going on there.
-
Welcome back Donald! Good luck with the G73's. I noticed on the N61 that you don't offer SSD in the optical bay but you do offer it in the 1st bay. Is that the best configuration for adding SSD?
If the backlit keyboard ends up being a go do you think you will offer that?
Can I steal your specs for The A1 on your site for the first page of this lounge? -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
1. We can always add the SSD in the Optical Bay, but most people only want the SSD for the primary drive on which they install the OS and applications. The 2nd drive is for storage, and compensates for the primary SSD being smaller.
2. Sure, if we can get the illuminated to work, and ASUS has enough supply of them, we will add it as an option as well.
3. Sure
-
Good news my friend! Be sure and give us a complete review when you get it so I can post it on the first page.
-
Well, seems I spoke too soon. Koala Lets you install fglrx but displays a unsupported hardware and won't enable composing. I read a lot about Lynx and the 5xxx cards not having support in general figured I'd have the same problems. Guess what? After upgrading to Lynx the fglrx drivers automatically installed by Ubuntu work out of the box, composing, resolution selection, multiple monitors... the works. I tried installing the 10.3 drivers off of the ATI site, they broke hardware support so I uninstalled them and went back to the boxed drivers.

LOL, Finally another " thermal dorks" hater has joined me on this thread!
Nihonjon- I love you man!
-
It's all good superjojo. We forgive you. Glad you finally saw the light.
-
2MNY, Thanks for the review. It's up on the first page. You don't have to edit it, if you have more reviews on the SSD I will add them.
-
As Nihonjon would say- Here is some silly temps you thermal dork!

Thanks for the help allyw123.
It is a bit confusing, most of the people I have asked said around like 75-80 deg for the gpu, but one or 1 or 2 say around 90.
I think it still does sound good tho. -
Same caddy that I got, although I'm quite impressed with it. You could easily fashion a bezel for it out of whatever you want, and you can also change the LED to white to match the rest of the laptop's LED's. Fitting the HDD in to the bay was indeed a little tight but the screws hold the drive in place nice and tight.
-
That is good to know. I noticed there were some people pulling the drivers from the repository but, I didn't know if they were 100% working or a work-around. thanks for the info. I will try it when I get home tonight.
-
Hey all,
