    Hello Risco,

    Very true!

Have you tried Fn + C key?

It changes the color profile, from normal, vivid, theater and so forth.

It also leaves the chosen profile intact after a reboot.

    Best regards,

    KOR!

Yeah makes everything look horrible! I have done some tweaking and I found contrast set to about 78 in notebook panel properties does the job.

Is this laptop limited to 1366x768 resolution by the screen itself or the video card. Could you replace this screen with a screen from another ASUS laptop with 1600 x 900 resolution and it work?

You just have to make sure you use the correct disk. There are two disks: OEM and retail. OEM keys work with OEM disks, and vice versa. The OEM key from the sticker on the bottom will not work with a retail Win 7 disk. At least that's the way I understand it.

sm0k3d: it is the screen's limitation. The video card will happily output to higher res.

If you can find a 1600x900 screen that fits and installs with little or no major wiring work, that would be awesome.

I have better results just using the ATI notebook panel properties. After adjusting the contrast it is now obvious too me the contrast ratio limitations are being covered up by Asus by using over high default lcd contrast settings. Unfortunately, the high contrast not only burns your eye, but makes everything look blue.

You can also fix the blue tint using CCC (as opposed to Win 7 color profiles). See my post here. According to Risco, the Desktop Properties settings do not stick when playing some games, but this is also the case with Win 7 profiles. I found that I could not fix the blue tint with the Desktops & Displays settings alone.

Steve, your profile is a vast improvement but still too contrasty for delicate work. See Black level - Lagom LCD test and White saturation - Lagom LCD test Under your profile, subtle shading is lost. I found an overall contrast of 92 adds a lot of fidelity in the bright white saturation without sacrificing much display brightness.

Thanks for you guys' advice, but now I'm confronted with another problem. It seems that there's a speck of dust or something underneath the LCD screen. I know it's dust because If I tap on the screen, it moves, but I can't remove it completely. What's the easiest way to open up the LCD screen so I can get rid of the speck? I see 2 screw covers on the bottom left and right side of the screen. Are these the only screws I need to remove the bezel?

I'll check it out when I get home. I don't do photo editing, so I don't really know the best settings. I did use an RGB gamma chart to set my gammas.

At least 2 other people in this thread have had similar problems under the glass plate. One was dust, and the other was "trash" (from ASUS' repair shop presumably). I'd be wary of sending the laptop off for RMA if that's the only issue you have with it; it may come back worse than before

I can't speak to the disassembly procedure, but it would be great to have a repair manual for this laptop. Sometimes resellers have them (I think one reseller even posted them online). I wonder if Donald or Justin have a manual for the N61JQ?

Did they have any solutions for this? I've actually tried to open up the bezel and discovered that there are additional screws on the inside of the bezel that holds the screen onto the clear plastic over the screen.

I am sorry but we do not have an assembly manual for the ASUS N61JQ-A1.

I do have a tip though. If you need an ASUS RMA, make sure they give you one that starts with USA1, not USA2. If you are on the Eastern half of the US they will probably give you a USA2 RMA number while the Western half would usually get a USA1. The horror stories are coming out of the repair facility in IN, not the headquarters facility in CA. USA2 = IN, USA1= CA.

Don't try to open it, I was told it has to be done in a vacuum chamber otherwise more dusts will get into it.

Here you go, the service manual for both N61Vn and N61JQ and try not to break anything :D :

Unfortunately as Risco stated this battery will not work because you will not be able to open the lid. It does fit and work but it sticks out the back and with the lower hinges on the screen they prevent the lid from opening. I think this is what has prevented Asus from coming out with a 9 cell for this laptop. Hopefully they will incorporate this sunken hinge in more models and that will force them to design a battery.

My notebook fan does not seem to cool the laptop much at all. The bottom of the laptop doesn't seem to get hot, so when the fan blows on the bottom, I don't think it does much

Most here have reported almost no difference in temps using coolers. A few have but it is a minority. I see very little difference using mine. It seems to have to do with the desgn. This laptop draws air from the front through the computer and vents out the side. Blowing air on the bottom of this does not really affect the cooling.

No; I've posted a few times about this. The cooler has negligible effect on temps due to the thermal design of the N61JQ.

I decided to contact Asus Customer Service about the 9 cell battery and this was their response.

    Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
I am sorry that only 6 cells 4400 mAh battery for your model.
No larger volume battery for N61JQ temporarily

Only if the overclocking feature can be approved by their engineer, I can request but no guaranteed.

For N71Jq the easy-overclocking was part of the feature on the old BIOS but for some reason they forgot to put it back on beta 206 bios so it's easy for me to request them to put it back.

Fan speed issue for N71JQ is the first priority now since it seem bother Turbogear a lot.

You were right. I still couldn't see 253 and 254 on the white saturation chart with contrast at 92, so I bumped it up a little until I could barely see 252. I'm using 95 for contrast. I lowered the blue gamma to 0.55 afterward (from 0.6), because lowering contrast seemed to blue-ify the screen again :p

I found with your gamma settings, if you push the contrast and saturation up greys actually turn a green to greenish brown.

I have an other core 2 duo T5600 laptop with exactly the same system and soft than my N61JQ. T5600 run idle "cold" where my N61JQ is very very very hot in same way.

I think the i7 cpu have serious heat problem... and ATI gpu too...what do you think about that ? It looks like I bought and heating system !!!!

To understand the heat issue you need to compare the wattage of both laptops.

Your T5600 is a 34W processor where the i7-720 is a 45W processor. Now, you didn't mention what video card you have in your other laptop, but, and I am just guessing here based on it having the T5600 low end processor, I would guess it is an integrated video solution like the Intel 4500.

If that is so, than add approximately 25 more Watts for the video card.

So, have you ever tried to touch a 40W light bulb after it has been on a few minutes?

Your ASUS N61JQ-A1 should not be "hot to the touch" to where your hand would recoil from the heat, but you should expect more heat than what you are used to from your old laptop. The good thing about the ASUS N61JQ-A1 is that its thermal solution is really quite good as you can tell by the amount of warmth that is coming out of your exhaust vent on the left side.

I don't think the heat is an issue. My cpu stay in idle at 55-60 degrees and gpu 49-52-56-58 degrees also in idle and 70-75 cpu 65-68 gpu in games. If you will check the lenovo y560/y460 lounge you will see very high temps like 105-110 degrees cpu and 95 GPu while gaming(same configuration-5730 and core i7-720qm)
    Advice:Buy a cooler.
P.S: The warranty is for 2 years. I thnk asus designed this asus for long time use.

mike2010, sounds like you're kinda new to the whole laptops and computers scene (or you're trolling, to which I say "good luck" and "good bye"). First you compared a PS3 to a laptop in terms of graphics. Now you compare a upper low range dual-core to a middle high-range quad core in terms of heat. The two systems you are comparing are not "exactly the same" even if the software installed are the same.

About PS3 and N61JQ I'm sure that our 5730 drivers can do better for HDMI out... (I hope) :D

    Hello ALL

After a month I am ready for some good gaming, So far two games installed CS Source through Steam and an OOOOLD game WarCraft 3 Reign Of Chaos funny but fun. Just wanted some recommendations on a real good FPS or Warcraft 3 type game to purchase that is worth the price and takes advantage of the hardware, not a fan of WOW.

    Thanks
