It's not so much that having it on all the time was my point, but that you have a connector on the board that (presumably) can power the keyboard backlight. The hardhack option is documented here and requires some wires and soldering once you find a 5V source on the board.

I don't have one of these models, so I'm out of this thread now. Just trying to help. Bye. :p

    I asked them nicely. :)

I think N71Jq shipped with bios 204 has easy-overlclocking feature but was removed on beta 206, I was told it will be put back on official release.

    Correction:
Easy Overclocking was added in 205 and does not exist on 204.

Im very new to laptops and notebooks but I have been reading up ALOT on them recently (this ASUS N61-JQ-A1 is my first laptop). Now i'm wondering, should I remove the sticker on the touchpad or no?

Yes, remove it. It is not intended to be used with the sticker.

    Good question.

But if they are not compatible then you will end up with a dead notebook.

My USB 3.0 external drive arrived today, so of course I have been busy moving stuff over. So far it is averaging 55 MB/s. Thats transferring 30-100 GB folders. If I transfer smaller files it peaks at around 100 MB/s. My USB 2.0 drive averages 20 MB/s, so this is about 2.5x the speed. However I have noticed that it is only a couple of files that seem to slow the whole thing down. Without that it averages 62 MB/s.

You're getting about the same speed as I: ~60 MB/s writing a single, 20 GB file to the drive.

stevedogg are you using Teracopy, or Windows explorer to transfer files? I ask because I noticed Windows tends to pause heavily when I transfer many large files all at once, when I switched to Teracopy the pauses went away.

There is no risk, its exactly the same notebook. I'm pretty sure the N71JQ bios run fine on N61JQ. I will try soon but I have to find a bios utility to update with, cause I think N61JQ utility doesn't accept N71JQ bios..

Report back after you try it . I hope there aren't special voltage settings or power management controls that differ between the two (since the N71JQ has a larger screen and higher power draw to the motherboard).

    Good Luck.

The N71JQ comes with a 120W supply. It could be that N71JQ has different power draw settings than the N61JQ.

I am not sure, but maybe AFUDOS works for this notebook.
I used it some time ago with my older M50Vm.

I think there is a bios v209 somewhere now, if you look at bios - HISTORY under asus support downloads for n61jq there is an entry about 209. Anyone know where it is?

Hi guys, I have been following this thread for some time now, even since I decided to get an asus n61 jq. I'll be getting the laptop soon (My friend will
be bringing the laptop with him, when coming from US)..

After reading the thread, it seems that the Zalman NC-2000 cooler I ordered might be wasted :( (With only 1 person getting good temp diff. Had read only the first few pages of the thread when ordering..)

Anyways, great thread everyone!! Keep it going..

Will be posting a small review of the laptop once I get it(would unfortunately take 3 more weeks) and play with it for a week. Hope everything goes well :)

Could you explain in a bit more detail? I've messed around with several drivers in Ubuntu and don't remember any system crashes from changing the driver settings. Sometimes messing with a compiz setting would disable the hardware drivers temporarily but that's it.

I'd suggest completely removing fglrx from package manager. Once it's gone, restart and install it from package manager. Do not use the drivers from the ATI site.

I wonder if they upgraded or installed fresh.

    About N61JQ and N71JQ BIOS
the two file have the same structure :
    N71JqAS.204 = 2,00Mo (2097152 octets)
    N61JqAS.208= 2,00 Mo (2 097 152 octets)
But I can not edit the file with EMI or AWARD bios editor like ami_tool or award_mod_tool..
Anyone know more about this bios file Hex editing ?

I think I can decompress it, thanks to AllurGroceries. Then I will attack it with Ida Pro.

Just got my battery back from RMA. Top marks to Asus, they came and collected from my work and turned it around in just over 7 days. Got a brand new one with fault confirmed by tech as "not charging fully"

Very happy, new battery has zero wear. How long should I charge it for the first time?

to be more secure you have to flash your bios in windows mode, not dos mode.

I think a few people here would disagree with that. Most feel more secure flashing their BIOs through the BIOS function.

As far as I know, the risk is much more higher if you flash from windows than from within bios using the ASUS easyflash utility.

It is well known that the Winflash is notorious and caused many people to brick their machines.

Besides in windows there is also a risk of other programs like antivirus interfering while flashing is on going.

A friend of mine has his HTC Windows mobile bricked because the antivirus interfered while firmware update was being done over the USB cable.

Hmm...Since people are upgrading I'll give it a try. A quieter fan on idle is always a plus :)

Edit: I can confirm that the fan is quieter on idle. Temperatures are the same.

For a minute I thought Steam wasn't working but it was just an issue with my connection to Steam, it's fine now. :)

Frankly I'm not sure about that. All people (including me !!) think its more safe to update the bios in Dos process but the fact is when we use windows bios utility update it use an eprom memory to upgrade the cmos very safely and not directly. When we use the Dos process upgrade, the update make an erasing directly and this is why sometimes it failed. Today, in 2010, I'm sure the windows update process is more safe than dos update. Otherwise is it easy to understand that we have to stop all task and software before to go... this is why we will see many people with failed Dos Bios upgrade..
Anyway we were promised that the bios would disappear and we still have the x86 architecture with bios boot system

Hey I registered on here to thank the creators of this thread because it helped me decide to buy this laptop (N61JQ-X1) over a Lenovo Ideapad Y560. I wasn't planning on buying a new laptop, but my old one (an HP dv9644) died (well the NVIDIA GPU was fuct).

So far I've found the resolution to be a bit low. It was 1440 x 900 on my HP; versus only 1366 x 768 on the N61, but I knew that going in. I also found the touchpad super annoying until I turned off a whole bunch of settings.

The first thing I did was switch out the 320 GB hard drive for the 500 GB drive I bought for my HP less than a year ago. They were both 7200 RPM, and it didn't change my Windows Experience Index (remained 5.9), so I guess that's all right. Moving my files from my 500 to my 320 via E-SATA took a while, but I guess faster than USB2 (or 3). Then cloning my 320 over to my 500 was a bit of a pain, because the laptop seemed to fall asleep while the Seagate DiscWizard clone tool was running. My brother said to hold down the CTRL key while it did it's thing when I woke it up (although when I pressed buttons to wake it up, the screen was blank, which gave me bad memories of my HP dying). So I held the CTRL key down overnight by putting something on top of it. Turns out it all worked out, and putting the 500 into my N61JQ-X1 was easy. At the time I wished I'd ordered the A1 for $100 more and gotten the 2 year warranty. But what's done is done.

So I'm satisfied with my purchase, and the shipping was pretty decently fast. I ordered it on May 5, and it got here on May 11 (shipped from New Jersey to Ontario). So I'm happy with Newegg.ca for that (my brother recommended them, and ASUS as well actually haha).

So I might check in here from time to time. The fact that this thread was over 400 pages made me happy too haha.

I know the feeling I had the exact HP (DV9644CA) with the Nvidia chip. GPU death....ugly. Whats irritating is it works perfectly, can hear it loading windows, just cant see anything.

Haha yeah my screen just looked kinda cloudy. I didn't hear Windows boot up though. That might be because I had a dual-boot (Vista/7) with the two hard drives.

My dad managed to fix it (temporarily) using some info he found online about using a heat gun on the GPU or something, but that fix only lasted a week. That's when I decided to just eff it and move on. The sad thing is my old iBook G4 is still around and kicking, in use by my younger sister, and it'll be 5 years old in August!

Today I've just been removing ASUS bloatware. I also looked around at RAM and hard drives but I think I'll wait a wee bit longer to upgrade them.

Well folks - it has arrived...safe, sound and no BSOD. I have no problem with the keyboard, display, or anything else, for that matter...so far. I did indeed create an image of the drive before I fired it up (old habits, I guess) so I didn't get real far with it tonight. Plan to take it to work w/me tomorrow and if I get a chance, play with it some more.

So...anyone out here ever us PC Mover (LapLink)? I am uneasy about going from a WinXP 32-bit to a W7 64-bit using this tool...however, I can't begin to tell u how 'personalized' this old XP system is and I DREAD trying to set everything up on the Asus. I have also toyed with the idea of reinstalling the entire OS on the Asus to drop it back to 32-bit. I am concerned some of my older apps aren't going to like 64-bit. Plus if I go that route I'll put W7 Pro so I can have XP Mode so I can run these older apps. We've worked quite a bit in the Lab @ work with XP Mode and it is really nice for every day stuff - very seamless between host and virtual.

Sorry for the barrage of info; I tend over-think things sometimes.
