Nope, cpu temp is like 40 and gpu is at like 50 degrees.

Sometimes when it restarts, I could just open up all my tabs from my previous session and it would reboot again.

Happens 90% of the also when I have a Youtube video open and load up Starcraft 2.

EDIT: Think I fixed it. Will report if I have problems after a day.

Got some help on AVS Forum, apparently my TV just doesn't support DD or DTS passthrough. I could have sworn that it did, oh well.

Did it randomly reboot before format and install? You may have answered your question?

I'm having this problem too, the event log says it's called "event 41 - kernel power"

does anyone have any ideas about what to do, i've tried everything short of a fresh windows install..

on a side note, how does starcraft 2 run on these machines?

    Mine was event 18.

I undervolted my CPU, but removed the undervolt, and it seems to be running okay now for about half a day so far.

Starcraft runs smoothly on medium settings at 1920 x 1080p on my external monitor. I overclocked my GPU though a little bit to increase my 3dmark06 score by about 400.

for undervolting, is CPUgenie a noob proof tool? what do you guys use? i'll have a try when i get the machine, hopefully soon... how much does it affect the battery life? if i leave it at 1.3/1.7 and not OC it to 1.9Ghz (i'd rather have a machine without sound/heat)

CPUGenie is definetly a noob proof tool, but it cost money. But if you want a machine without sound/heat, then it will be an awesome investment.

I'm pretty sure I always got Gig speeds on mine. Using Gig is really the best way to get stuff on and off this laptop, since it doesn't have any other high speed interfaces.

    I'll double check but I'm 90% sure it's Gig.

The UL30vt does not have gigalan, only 10/100 "fast ethernet"...

I believe ul30vt-a1 has 10/100 fast ethernet and ul30vt-x1 has the full 10/100/1000 gigabit ethernet.

Both these laptops spec with the same with the AR8131 PCI-E and both are listed as gigabit cards. Searching web finds Toshiba owners only getting "fast" speeds, 100mbit and other post saying they get gigabit.

Anyone have a link to the specifications to this chip? I searched the Atheros site and only see the 8200 specs.

Does anyone know where I might get my hands on a UL30VT near Atlanta? Build quality is very important to me and I'd like to examine it before buying. Granted, I could always order one and send it back if it doesn't meet expectations, but I'd rather avoid that.

    Thanks for any tips.

According to this press release , the Atheros AR8132M, is Fast Ethernet (10/100), not Gigabit Ethernet.

Yes, but the AR8131M is listed as Gigabit Ethernet.

Do we not have the AR8131 as listed in HW manager?

I seem to have some issues with overclocking the GPU. I installed Nvidia System Tools, and accepted the risk statement. I used the advised clocks, but every time i hit apply, it says. the fields were invalid and the clocks were reset. Any ideas?

I even tried using EVGA Precision, and everytime i set the clocks and hit apply. They just reset to the original ones. I think I'm missing a step here somewhere.

That might be a driver issue showing an incorrect card.. My notebook is in customs since yesterday, and I will have it tomorrow with some luck. I am going to test the speeds as first task to clear doubts.

    Hi everybody,

First ever post, and I hate to be a taker and not a giver, but I'm hoping everyone can help me out. But just so I'm not a total drain, I'll give a quick two cents about my ul30vt-a1 (I believe-I forget x1 versus a1 - mine's silver, the more expensive one).

    Initial thoughts:
Super light - but feels cheaper than my u30jc I had for a few weeks (dead pixel - it was sold out - so I got this instead)
Power is respectable, but clearly below the u30jc - I find myself with plenty of power for most multitasking
Graphic changing is very simple - some blogs I've read suggested that manually switching graphics is incredibly difficult and frustrating - I've found it to be very simple

All in all, it's a nice little device, but I would rather have a u30jc

Having said that I have two complaints, one that is HUGE
First, and minor, I find that the keyboard regularly misses key strokes when I get in a typing frenzy. Not sure if anyone else has had this problem.

Second, and this is the major problem, and what I need your help for (PLEASE). I am always bumping the track pad by accident when typing. I believe it is my thumbs coming in contact with the pad in the upper right and the upper left. All of the settings tweaks in the world aren't fixing the problem. I use an external mouse, and have been disabling the touchpad in the meantime. But this is the BIG problem. I have the bar examination coming up in less than one week. I have tested the software, and my external mouse will work with it (great). But the touch pad is still active also. When I get typing sometimes, as I mentioned, I bump the damn touch pad, and now I'm typing somewhere in the middle of my essay, or I've highlighted a chunk, and replaced it with some other text. This is semi-easily fixed with a ctrl+z, but I won't have time to waste on the bar exam.

To digress quickly, and explain why disabling the touch pad is not enough, the exam software is crazy secure. It actually changes your boot order. It doesn't mess with partitions or anything, because I dual boot with Ubuntu, and Grub still comes up. But when I select to boot from windows, it loads directly in to something resembling a stripped down word doc, and that's what I have to type in to. The problem is that, this doesn't let my mouse settings load, including the touch pad being disabled. As such, I'm stuck with the functioning mouse pad (this is bad) and the external mouse.

I tried deleting the mouse from device manager, but lost complete mouse functionality, including the external.

Could someone please help me out so that my external mouse will be active, but the touch pad will be disabled? I'd rather not open my device and manually pull wires, but I will if it comes to it.

Admittedly, I'm making sure nothing can go wrong for my bar exam, but I hope this puts any potential purchasers on warning...

OK, since this is just for the bar exam with draconian software lets try a temporary fix.

Being capacitive, what happens if you tape a sheet of aluminum foil over track pad? With common post-it notes it takes a stack of 8 or so to fool the sensor from tracking.

Then again you could borrow a USB keyboard to keep the strange looks down depending on your travel requirements.

Size VS weight VS power = mo money! Sony may have some expensive options..maybe after you pass the bar?

Maybe I'm missing something here. How come he can't just go to Control Panel > Mouse Properties > ELAN tab and enable "Disable when external USB mouse plugged in"? I've discovered this setting also affects the trackpad for BT-connected mice.

He could but the OP suggest this will not work due to the nature of the security settings of the bar exam software. If I read his post right, he tried this?

I don't see a software fix for that type of issue if he's loading into a very secure environment like that. I suppose you could look around for sites dedicated to cheat that software and you could load different programs/scripts/whatever, and even as innocent as your actual intention for that is, getting caught would lead you into a world of .

Have you tried finding some kind of way to completely remove the native touchpad drivers from windows? Not so much from device manager, but from windows system directory.

I just want to get a feel for how fast the machine is... things like program start up time and etc (word, photoshop...), If i get it i probably wont get a SDD ASAP, and just use the slower harddrive for a while til i find some awesome discount

It's definitely still worth it. The UL30JT-A1, the UL30VT-A1's "successor", has an i3 and an updated GPU but the performance gains are negligible and the battery life takes a hit, all for $120 more.

..and weight. You will have to ask how bad do you need the extra horsepower. The next step up in gaming will take a better GPU.

You have the reviews for both systems so go for it... :)

No weight gains. I would be going for the U35JC. I don't know if I need to extra horsepower. I don't plan on doing any gaming as I have my consoles for that. I won't be doing any video editing either. Mostly browsing/light photo editing/watching HD video/microsoft word/powerpoint etc.

I was just wondering how big of a difference that i3-370 will be compared to the SU7300 if I only do what I mentioned above. Is the SU7300 pretty good for multi-tasking?

OK, dumb question (and yes I searched the archives). Does the U30Vt-A1 wireless network card support N at only 2.4GHz? I can't seem to connect to my dual band router at 5.0GHz, and found an Amazon review (for the X1 with Intel card) that says it doesn't support 5GHz. But I thought the A1 had an Atheros card? Do neither support 5GHz then?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hey guys,

I've been looking for a new laptop for a while now, and the UL30VT seems to be the perfect pick. Light, thin, long lasting but still enough power for some tasks.

Anyway, I have a question concerning the design of the UL30VT. I watched many unboxing videos on youtube, went to the store and it looked really great, even with that glossy palmrest. But I have some doubts wether it'll still look great after 3-4 Months, cause these glossy plastic seems to only look good if polished and clean without any scratches.

So my question to all owners, how's your UL30VT looking after few months of usage?

I've had my UL30VT for about 4 months now, I haven't done any modding to it, although I have overclocked the GPU. I've been taking this thing everywhere, and although the screen and wrist-rests definetly need a wiping every now and then, there is no reason to worry about it. The build quality is excellent, I've had no squeaky parts or flexing keyboard or anything. The plastic doesn't scratch that easilly and mine still looks the same as when I got it. I would highly recommend it.

I tried to hook up my UL30VT-A1 to a HDTV via HDMI and couldn't get it to fill the entire screen. There were black bars on each side and it appeared to be 4x3 ratio instead of 16x9.

    Any ideas?

Yes, you have to set the resolution for your external display. I set my external for 1080p with the notebook screen off.

If you have trouble with HDMI audio, you have to select and make the HDMI default under the sound panel.

hi guys, i wanted to ask this but didnt have a chance... when i use a laser cordless mouse, and without plug in power, i always experience a second or 2 delays in mouse movements, and also if i am watching youtubes, the sound also "stuttered" when the delay happens.. it is very annoying and both of my ul30vt (a replacement) are doing the same thing... i am getting my 3rd replacement next week, and i will use a Optical cordless mouse to see if it still happens... (this only happens when power is unplugged, so i figured it has something to do with the stock GPU? anyone?)

It might be some USB powersaving problem. Go to power options > advanced > usb power savings > select max performance. See if this helps.

hotsauz, I'm using a BT mouse with no problems. The only setting I have made is to not have mouse wake computer.

Your going on your 3rd machine? For just the mouse? Whatever, you may want to start with a corded mouse, then work back to RF mice to rule out out your mice, you may have a rat.

I just undervolted my laptop to 0.875V. On Throttle Stop, i selected power saver and it shows 4.48 x 266.7 MHz = 1194.7 MHz when the computer is just idling. I thought it was supposed to clock down to a much lower speed. Do i have to manually set the multiplier for that? Also CPU-Z is showing 1.066Ghz. Is this normal?

Ok, next step is to see how your display is set up to handle scaling. I let my LCD scale to full so only have bars top and bottom if original media is in that format, like many DVD rips. There is no scaling, of course, with BD disk however my 720p collection scales up to full, no bars. I do allow many lo-rez mkv files to play at their native rez because some get really ugly when up-scaled, so these may have bars on four sides.

So my 30vt and WDTV are set to output at native external LCD rez, no scale, over HDMI.

Yes, I go by the core speed in CPUz, I think TS is only reporting the same FSB as CPUz? I always leave PG4 in turbo and modulate with TStop.

My max game, 1, vs battery using TStop.
