Was anyone able to find the newest drivers for the wireless card? If I let windows search it says its the most up to date driver already but when I try to connect my laptop to an ad hoc wireless connection like my iphone 4G it searches until it times out and then says to check my router. Problem is my ipad, desktop, and friends laptop all connect to my iphone while the Asus won't. I think the issue is the driver for the wireless card. Any help? I can't find any drivers for this brand card online.

I cannot locate this. There is no camera-controller program that came with the drivers.

Which program are you using the webcam on? When you choose the webcam setup, choose the asus virtual webcam, then you can change a lot of the settings on the webcam.

If you're using skype or live messenger, go into the webcam's properties and you can flip the webcam's image. It's all standard feature built in on most instant messaging program.

I already have a BT 5000 mouse so use it. The range is great. The mentioned RF mouse is another option if you have a free USB port. O Depot has a sale going for the mice.

Another option is the IR remote and receiver for WM Center if you use this. This will run you about $15 on ebay.

I found a WD TV on Craig's list, $25. I play all my ISO movies and 720P-DTS movies and have converted my CD's to FLAC. This has an RF remote so you just plug your external drive in, very convenient for the price.

Was it flipped on the receiving computer? You could have kept a straight face and tried to convince them it was their display? :p

I do this all the time now with my UL30vt and my G50vt. I just use a bluetooth mouse to pause it. Its not that bad. You just click the mouse and its paused.

I'm hoping someone here can help me because I've somehow made my UL30VT practically useless. I posted earlier about my wireless network card not being able to connect to my iphone 4 ad hoc wireless connection. This is a deal breaker for me since I need wireless internet when I travel and the iphone allows me to do that from the car with 3g.

Anyways, so I decided since windows will not find a newer driver for the wireless card that I would uninstall it and use a slightly older driver. Sometimes this works so I gave it a try. I forget what Atheros version I used but I think it was was 2.0.0something. Long story short this solved the problem for one reboot. I could log onto my iphone and I thought everything was good.

Then I restarted my computer and I got a new problem; my wireless icon at the bottom had a red line through it and would not even see any of the wireless signals around me including my normal router. The only way I figured out how to fix this was to uninstall the whole wireless network card and then have windows look for new hardware. This worked the first time and I just had windows use the newest driver.

Well this morning I woke up to find the wireless router not viewing any networks once again. so I tried uninstalling it and now when I goto windows to reinstate the hardware I get a windows Blu Screen of death that says something about wireless adapter memory dump before it restarts my computer. This happens everytime I try to reinstall the wireless card! Also if I go into device manager this is an "!" next to Microsoft Virtual WiFi miniport adapter #2. NOt sure what that is either.

Can anyone 1) help me get my computer to work again off the WiFi adapter and 2) figure out a reason why it's not connecting to my ad hoc iphone connection? #2 is important enough that I will sell this whole computer if it can't tether to a 3g connection.

    Allright guys....

Which is the best Non-SSD HDD for Asus UL30VT at this point in time....??

Is it the Seagate Hybrid Momentus XT ?
Is it the Seagate 7400.4 ?
Is it the Hitachi Travel Star 7K500 ?
Is it the WD Scorpio Black ?

Minimum size Required is 500 GB.

    Which is "THE BEST".... PERIOD....???

Is it the Seagate Hybrid Momentus XT

btw, there's no 500GB version of WD scorpio black. Only scorpio blue reaches 500GB+ capacity. The 500GB version of WD scorpio blue 5000BEVT comes as standard with new batch of ul30vt machines.

Okay I've used a restore point that goes back 3 months ago before any of the network problems and it still does the same thing. Everytime the computer reboots, the wireless network adapter does not recognize any networks and has to be uninstalled/installed to start working. What is going on with this?

I think you might've accidentally cleared the Recovery partition in your hard-drive, you might want to use software like GParted to see if it still exists, if not, you might be out of luck.

Hi, no its still there, i added the new partition by shrinking D partition an created a couple of new for Linux.

The recovrey option is still in Grub as a choise "Windows Vista" but i wonder where the F9 is, If its the mbr who handle this ?

And if its possible to restore it, or edit it so i get F9 to start recovery back.

    Hey everyone.

I was thinking of buying a ASUS UL30Vt-X1 for school and a bit of Starcraft 2 but now I heard there is a newer model being released.

Should I jump in or wait for the new model to be released?

I hope it's around the same price.

    Thanks :)

What's the install order of these drivers?
The graphix boost status light won't light up. And there will always be two graphic card (intel and nvidia) in the device mgr no matter which power mode it is in. Is this normal?

Rezer77 made a guide 30 post back or so, use search.

The graphics switch light does not light up, turbo boost, under P4G is either on or off.

Yea, both display adapters show up in device manager.

I would use something like SuperGrubDisk (google it, its a live CD/USB) and you can restore the windows MBR. But this could severly disrupt your linux partition. With the setup you currently have, I'm not sure you are able to restore F9 to what it used to be.

The price will definitely go up, and most likely the new models will have i3, which doesn't give you much of a boost. I play plenty of SC2 on this machine, and also taking this for college, so I highly recommend it.

    Hey all,

I recently had a nasty spill with my UL30vt that resulted in a broken screen, hinges, failing hd, and some external cosmetic damage. I sent it in for an RMA and got it back a few days ago and all's been nifty so far. Except, however, for the touchpad.

Now, this is my 2nd machine (first one's hd failed the next day) and I've never had issues with the touchpad, and felt it was pretty good. The thing now is that I would say the left ~1/5th of the touchpad is totally unresponsive to anything, and the remaining ~4/5th is semi-unresponsive and barely usable at best.

I was just wondering if anyone has had this kind of issue or knew of what could be the problem. If I'm not mistaken, before I sent it in for an RMA, I think it was fine, but they did swap out the hd and reinstalled Windows 7 and what not, so I thought it might be the drivers, but I've tried various other ones and to no avail. I'm hoping it's not a hardware defect

    Thanks for any input!

    Hi guys. I just got a UL30VT-A1 and I have 2 quesitons.

    1) How can I create a DVD (or flash drive, depending on how big it would be) to restore the laptop to the OS condition it is in now? What I mean is, if the hard drive completely fails and I can't get to the restore partition, I want a DVD that will reinstall Windows on the new hard drive with all the drivers installed, so that I don't have to go through installing drivers manually.

    2) Can I use my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit System Builder disc to do a fresh install of Windows on the laptop using the serial key that is on the bottom of the laptop for Home Premium? I used the disc to install Windows on my desktop, so I am wondering if it can be used again if I use a different key, and if it will work if that key is for Home Premium even though it's an Ultimate disc.

    1. To create a DVD, you would have to use an external cd-rw drive. For USB,you would have to create an ISO for a DVD but instead of burning it, use software to place it on a USB stick.

    2. No, you can't use your Windows 7 Ultimate disc with a Home Premium key, you would have to use the key that came with the ultimate disc.

    1) I have an external DVD drive and many DVD-Rs. How would I create an ISO of the current OS with the drivers and software already installed?

    2) Are you sure? On the first post of this thread, it says you can use any Windows 7 DVD. I just want to make sure it also means System Builder DVDs.

I don't mean to come off as rude. I'm just too much of a perfectionist.

Answering to 1), you could use the Windows 7 backup tool, or any other disk image/backup tool.

I always use Acronis True Image Western Digital Edition (as I have WD disks in my desktop, and in this laptop), and you only need to install the software, make the image, burn it to the dvds and keep it safe...

As I don't have a external dvd burner (I don't need one), I have made the image, copied it to the desktop by LAN, and I used it already once booting with a pendrive, when I needed to delete a 100mb partition made automatically by the Windows 7 install. It works like a charm.

Also it is useful to make weekly images, as it updates the existing image, and the process is a lot faster.

Ah, thank you. So it's called an image. That makes it easier to find tutorials. How much space does it use? The whole size of your partition, or just the used space in the partition?

Also, from what I've read, I assume you have to also create a system recovery disk to be able to restore from the image? Or is it possible to boot from the image somehow and restore from there?

And question 2 is still open. Anyone?

All retail disks should have all versions to allow for upgrades. If you have a way to select W7HP to use with your key then you should be good if this is not automatic with key used. Call M$, they should guess better than me ;)

    I have a W7HP image which worked for me,fwiw.

The image I made just after a fresh windows 7 install, and installing all the Asus drivers was somewhere on the 6.5gb, using the maximum compression option on Acronis True Image (that is like 50% compresison ratio).

I recovered the image using a recovery pendrive created with Acronis, and the tool lets you select the image from the actual hard disk partitions, so I recovered it from partition D:, but you can have the image in the usb as long it has the space needed.

What was your total time to make and compress your image? My 260G image took 7 hours, USB, but then all apps and keys were good to go.

Once compressed, how long to restore your bare system?

Was the 260GB the size of your partition or the amount of used space? I need to know if I need to go out and buy an external HDD for this, and what size.

I don't know what software are you using, but my image took 20 minutes max, and the recovery process the same.

I didn't do a "bit perfect" image, so maybe there is the difference? It compressed the used 12gb on a 50gb partition, to 6.5 gb. Then I repartitioned to delete the 100mb windows 7 install partition, and restored to a new 50gb partition.

Yes, out of a 500G drive to another external 500G USB drive. Everyone says the n Router port is the way so I'll try this down the road for faster than USB x-fer tests.

Geomancer, I was using the free Acronis True Image for the Seagate. Your speed sounds right. 20 minutes is great for quick system restore for a game machine or SSD.

It's when you add 250 gigs of junk that I hate it ;)

I can cut this down to 4 hours using eSata drive dock on eSata laptop.

Alright. Another question for you guys. When I'm typing on the integrated keyboard on my UL30VT-A1, it makes a rattling sound when I push any keys on the left side. I'm pretty sure it is the Tab, Caps Lock, Left Shift, and maybe 1 or 2 more keys that rattle.

Do all the UL30VTs have this problem?
If I were to order a new keyboard for it, would that most likely fix it?
    Anyone know a quick fix?

I don't have time to send it back and get another laptop (same model or different), otherwise I would send it back, seeing as it's brand new.

Edit: I just found this guy who had the same problem, but I'm not sure if he got it fixed.

No, not all keyboards are bad but this thing is not built like a $2500 laptop. I have a bit of loose fit on left side of the top palm rest if I squeeze by the VGA port.

I would place a ticket with Asus support and make arrangements for repair when convenient. The keyboard is released by for 4 metal clips but if your not careful, the palm rest may get marked or clips may get damaged.

The lighted keyboard IS better than the stock, but not offered in this model.

You connect a 1680x1050 capable monitor and it'll display the resolution automatically.

Make sure you have Power4Gear 1.24 or 1.25 installed.

To quote the very first post in this thread,
"After that, install the nVidia graphics driver, the Power4Gear Hybrid Utility 1.24 or 1.25 (to enable video switching, use version 1.25 or older as later versions have issues; 1.25 can be found at http://support.asus.com, under General Download select "Notebook", "Apps" and "P4GHybrid")".

Other than that, I don't know. I just got this laptop. :D

It's normal to have only one card in device manager. If you have two, it means the graphic card drivers aren't working properly.

Try updating the bios to the latest version.

I decided to try some moded stuff from Nautis 258.96 package, i was able to switch, but on integrated card i couldn't change brightness - i need that option for sure.
So I tried modded 197.16, everything like basic stuff - no switching available.
When I'm clicking on tray online only this shows up

When I want enter NVIDIA Control Panel this shows up

    EDIT2:
    Ok guys, problem solved.
I think everything was caused by updating windows first rather than installing drivers.
Now after format I can switch cards by power4gear (v1.25) on original drivers and modded 197.16 to which i'll stick for now.
I'd like to change to newer one when brightness issue on intel gpu will be fixed.

Cheers and thanks for working on theese! :)

Is there a chance that this laptop doesn't support 1680 x 1050 over VGA? Maybe it only works using the NVIDIA GPU or the Intel GPU. Try switching GPUs.

I just got my UL30VT-A1 and it has the same issue as well. The Tab, Cap Lock, and Left Shift keys all "rattle". It is really annoying too. Makes this perfect little unit sound cheap. It's pretty easy to hear when typing.

Anyone know any ways to fix this? I think it's just the keys not fitting well, I really don't know that pulling the keyboard would help this.

Someone mentioned some double sided sticky tape, but didn't give any details of how they did it. Can you remove the keys from the keyboard? I'm afriad to do any prying.

I'd be very thankful for any suggestions!

You can remove the keys from the keyboard. I don't know how, but there are tutorials on the internet. All chiclet keyboard keys should remove the same way.

Also, I called Asus, and they're shipping me a new keyboard. We'll see if that one works better.

And double-sided sticky tape was mentioned in the thread I linked to in the post that you quoted, but I don't think that would fix the problem. It seems as if the key itself is loose on the mount (backplate). The backplate seems fine because there is no flex. If there was room under the backplate, there would be flex in the keyboard.
