Sounds like one of a few possible problems

    1: bad ram

    2: corrupt Operating system

    3: bad harddrive

my advice is try taking out one stick of ram then trying to load up the computer. if it fails, plug that stick back in and take out the other one. if it still doesnt work, try reinstalling windows. If that fails, get a new hd and try to install windows (or find a friend with a g60vx and swap harddrives.)

I had a similiar problem and I think it was because of the recovery partition. For some reason an automated Windows recovery from this partition started every time and displaying Windows is loading files, then the typical Vista progress bar and then the system was always freezing. Nothing could override this.
Solved it by deleting the recovery partition using the Setup from a Win7 Installation DVD. Then my Vista started like nothing happened before.

actually no. doing the ram switch is easy. he should try both options before he reformats and loses all of his info.

Thank you guys so much for all your help. I think I will be going to BB shortly. There is still a question in my mind about this... Does the G60VX-RBBX05 or 09 support virtualization so that I could run it in XP Mode if I wanted??
Thank you so much for your help.

i read what that thread had said. its not the screen itsself. its actually the backlighting. almost all laptops have a kinda crappy viewing angle. find one you like or atleast can tolerate. after awhile you dont really notice it or care, atleast i dont.

no laptop screen will EVER be as good as a regular desktop monitor.

Man, how many of these have had some kind of defect?

I bought one on the 26th for $899 and it's on it's way. I'm seriously thinking of returning it because of the issues I've seen here. But then again, I really don't want to get an overpriced Alien either.

You guys aren't worried about the reliability of these things?

Heat fluctuations, broken/flimsy buttons, and Nvidia drivers hit or misses.

Sorry for the OT but this is BS. There are plenty of laptops out there with screens that put many desktop monitors to shame. Laptops always get the "new" stuff in display tech first due to their size. First LED backlight. First RGBLED backlight etc just to address the backlight issue.

Hahaha, i have NEVER seen a good laptop monitor from any company ever. My buddy has one of the 2500 dollar alienware laptops and that screen is terrible. Hell, i've seen a few of the sager notebooks and those looked bad aswell. Quality and good can change from person to person.

My suggestion is just find one you personally like. What i may define as good, others may not.

Okay, gripe time. The on/off hardware button for wifi is stupidly broken. Both positions read as "off" to the software; you have to turn the wireless back on using the fn+F2, which I didn't know existed. The irony? I disabled the wireless in the network control panel 'cause I was tethered to my mobile and didn't want to use the local wireless on accident. I re-enabled when I disconnected the tether and I was informed by Windows that while IT considered the wireless adapter to be active, the hardware did not. 2 hours later, fiddling with switches in case I had screwed it up, checking the BIOS, etc... I tried the longshot, and hit fn+F2. Worked like a charm. I'm half-tempted to get into the laptop and ripping out that damn hardware switch...

Yo the guy concerned about issues with the laptop-

heat fluctuations are what happens in laptops. Deal with it or don't own a lappy

it's one button. Don't turn your wirelss off with it an no problemo

the Nvidia issue is a DRIVER problem. Not asus problem. I have had my laptop. Since Oct 25 and have yet to have any issues. Just fond the driver that works for your laptop and you are good to go

Hi i just got this laptop and i have a couple of concerns.

    1. Last night i restarted my laptop and opened up the hardware temp monitor, then went to bed, in the morning I noticed that my GPU had a max temp reached of 88C...which is really odd to me because when I'm playing WoW my max temp is about 76C(I play on "good" settings for maximum FPS). Is it normal for the GPU to heat up like that for apparently no reason in the middle of the night? I did have the "Asus" screensaver going but it shut off after about 10 minutes I believe.

    2. The USB port in the rear of the unit seems loose, not the port itself, but the devices I plug into it have alot of play, more so than the ports on the side...is that normal for anyone else? Maybe because that port is verticle and the ones on the side are horizontal? It also creaks when I move it up and down...I'm worried that maybe the port is broken inside or loose? Maybe the PCB is loose? This is my main concern so if someone could duplicate this for me I would really appreciate it.

    3. While I was playing around with the rear port trying to see if it was the port itself or the device, I(Stupidly) used a small metal object, to try and push up and down on the port gently, at which time the tool i was using went inside the port just a bit but ended up touching some of the USB contacts, which ultimately shorted them out and my computer shut off as if i pulled the battery out...yes I know it was stupid, i wasn't thinking...the port still works, and the computer turned back on and appeared to behave normally...I think that the USB overcurrent protection is what killed the power, which would be a good thing...think everything is ok?

    Thanks,
    Max

Well, I was concerned because I'm pouring my hard earned money into a system (like everyone else).

Trust me, I know that heat fluctuations happen but the one's seen here have no rhyme nor reason.

I agree with you on the buttons and drivers.

I've already pulled the trigger and pre-ordered the new ASUS G73 (fingers crossed).

max, until you have any problems i think its safe to say its alright. if the port works and your computer hasnt shorted, i'd thank the computer gods.

I've had my ambient temps kick up to 80 from time to time on their own. Its part of owning a laptop. dont worry.

what drivers is everyone using for your 260m?

im on stock and i run at 62c-65c with a notebook cooler just browsing thru the web on "high performance" as of now, and yes on turbo mode, when not on turbo mode everything drops about 2c... still seems pretty high...

but it randomly goes up to 75c just browsing the web....

my cpu is running at 50c and 52c currently, i feel like this is high.

even my nvidia 295 gtx idles at 40c and peaks at about 70c over clocked to... hm o cant remeber because im on my laptop =).

i love this thing but... i wouldnt mind it running a little coller, i was hoping to atleast have my gpu idling at 42c -47c....

processors at 40c flat... am i being crazy? im new to laptops....

I figured out why my ambient temp fluctuates when I'm away from the computer and stable while I'm playing wow...because while I'm playing wow the fans are constantly running which stabalizes the temperature of the GPU as it's under load....when I'm away, they only turn on as the system heats up...so the GPU is still going it will get up to the 80's, then the fan kicks in and drops the temp back down rather quickly. This might be elementry to most of you but I thought I would share for those who could benefit from this. And thanks Ghost.

I have calmed down about my USB port...but if someone still could confirm that thier rear usb port allows alot of wiggle for devices it would make me feel even better...I went to the best buy store and tried out the display model and it seemed about the same as mine.

Oh cool! I just came to post about that :)

I'm kind of torn about what to do. The G60Vx would be better than what I have...112 core GPU instead of 32, but the CPU is only 100MHz faster, and obviously if I could I'd love a quad core and/or newer design (not that a reasonably fast Core 2 duo isn't completely adequate for today's games!)

BUT...the thing is, both Asus and Dell seem to be having problems with their i7 systems. USB flaws in both, and other issues specific to one or the other. There's a Sager that's apparently pretty much perfect, but it costs probably at least $500 more than this, and the GPU is only slightly better.

So...this probably works for sure, and would be close to as good as you can get GPU wise, and leaves me with more money to buy a new system in a year or two if I need to...

    I don't know :-/

ok my G60VX showed "Plugged in, Not charging" over the battery indicator...so I tried everything...searched the web and tried those suggestions...nothing. Called customer service and did a hard reset..that fixed it for about 10 minutes...then it did it again...so I took it back to best buy and got a new one...now this one is doing the same thing..>ARRRGGGHH!!!! Anyone have this problem? I don't know what I'm doing wrong...I'm not changing any settings...just installing my regular programs and using it to play WoW...?!?!?

Well congrats on your new purchase on the G73! :) I'm loving these new product lines from Asus!

Those new G73's do look great. Don't mind us but we'll just carry on here with our G60 thread now ;) (I wish I could afford the extra cash but all the same I love the G60, for the price it's a great deal.)

This may not be the exact model # but this thread may interest you more at this point: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=447140.

Oh good, didn't realize that's what you meant. Yeah mine does the same thing. It's probably to help protect the battery.

I'd guess a refresh is coming soon given all the Core i5 systems coming out. Personally I hope it's NOT ATi graphics as I won't buy a notebook with ATi until they start supporting their mobile GPUs. (And I don't mind having CUDA/PhysX, though I guess I can live without it.)

:-/ Wish the 09 was a bit cheaper. I'm still considering biteing on that since at least I can assume it would work (versus these newer systems with weird problems). The 05's CPU is a step back for me so it's a no-go :(

(If you don't mind it though it's a nice deal in a lot of ways!)

overclock it... or be happy with it. 2.13 to 2.6 isnt going to net you much of performance. 1 - 3 fps and maybe a few seconds load time.

Whats up guys? I just made I think the first video review on the G60.
The main review is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ca_8QVnsMFc
And the Asus Utilities and Features review is here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwX7_gZqDgc
The second one also has some help with HDMI sound problems, Turbo and Extreme Turbo mode and the Facial recognition software.
I guess this is sort of a buyer guide review.
I show fraps footage of the PC running WoW and CoD at max settings.
    Check it out.

Just curious, I just got my 09 and it idles at about 63. I played GTA IV for about 15 minutes and it maxed at 89 degrees. I have to turn down the graphics alot for it to run GTA IV without lag. I tried the other drivers mentioned in this thread but it seems to act the same... is there something wrong, should I be worried or is it fine? What do you guys think?

seems a bit high at idle, and does gta 4 run with lag because of the graphic card or because of the heat??

just install the latest graphic drivers from nvidia for 200m series cards. works just fine. and i saw a performance boost aswell.

I think GTA 4 runs with lag because of the graphic card because dropping the settings of the game increased performance dramatically. I don't think the heat is affecting it, I'm just concerned because most of the people in this thread say that it is normal to have an idle at about 50. I will go to the nvidia site and get the updated drivers. Thank you :)

GTAIV lags because it is a CPU hog. even a 5870 couldn't run it properly with a crap CPU.

    Hey Howard,
I just fell for the laptop ! and I was even more convinceed on reading your first post !
I just finihsed 70 odd pages of the thread and I am thrilled to buy it !
I am confused about the2 G60VX models available right now - the RBBX05 and 09 version. Is there any specific advantage for the 05 other than the price.
And since I am not a tech savvy person, I ant to deal with lest of tweeting treoubles needed after.
So would 09 version with 2.53GHz over 05 with 2.13 be better. ?
I am not really worried about the hard disk pace and battery, as my lappy would be plugged all te while most of the time.

Hoping to buy it tomorow :) yaayy

    Cheers,
    Jeevan

the performance increase from 2.13 to 2.5 will be small. considering extreme turbo mode with the rbbx05 kicks it up to 2.3

meh...500mhz isnt much. yes there will be a difference but not as big as most people think.

on a high note, my rbbx05 (p7450 2.13ghz) i was able to successfully clock it to 2.85ghz, prime it stable, and run 3dmark06. with an overclock on both the processor and graphic card, i got 11913. so close to 12000 haha.

but man thats one hell of a cpu. i think i got lucky.

90c is normal. i have the newest nvidia drivers available from nvidia's website under 200m series

i have my gpu overclocked and i stay at 89. if i dropped the overclock i'd stay at around 80. reason for this is i took the back of the laptop off and applied new and better thermal paste to the processor, north bridge, and GPU.only do this if you have steady hands and know what youre doing.

before i did anything, stock everything, my gpu would hit 90. no worries the g51 series got hotter

Good question. I would like to know that too, as I don't know what to remove or how to remove it. I've read that Ccleaner does work for you, but I'm hesitant to remove things when I don't even know what they are.
