I e-mailed Ken and he sent a reply within minutes saying I can do the upgrade and send payment via check or paypal. I sent a paypal e-check and left a note with my order number, etc.

deployments are good for that (classes) eh?
-
haha yea, I ended up getting a B in my Comp 1 class... not a bad start to my college career!! Now I gotta do good on my Math/History as they finish just before I go on Mid Tour leave!

Gee it's tough being 11 hours ahead of most of you. Can't join in the "interesting" discussions. When I log on 7 pages have been delt with (and numerous deletions I see).
I don't think I'm being all that -ve. The first specs to come out included e-sata, expressCard and 4 RAM slots. That's when I put in my pre-order.
I am still intending to get this, unless more things are "dropped", or unless someone else brings out something better between now and ..... March?
EDIT: Just watched the DX11 demo. I really hope that DX11 also gives all the medieval carts soft pnumatic tyres and good suspension. I would have thought the road pavers would use more even stones for their roads
EDIT: I would have liked the express card because that is still the only way I see of getting 5.1 sound out of it without purchasing a set of speakers with optical/spdif input. -
There is no other laptop currently that I can get a core i7 with a nice gfx card, 80 gb SSD/500 gb HDD, and 17'' full HD 1920x1080 for $1,850. Expresscard and memory slots are just not that big a deal when you are getting all that for under 2k. Similar Alienware config has me up around 2,500.

I actually have the Altec Lansing FX5051 5.1 setup which just uses USB then does the 5.1 processing itself. I bought it a while ago so there might be newer usb surround alternatives.

Just ordered the nighthawk a few days ago. Completely stoked, this is my first gaming laptop
Can't wait until it arrives!
Thanks for all the useful information here guys -
hi, new member here.
Does anyone know how ASUS G73JH stack up against Acer Aspire 8942G ? As far as I can see, the only difference in spec is the screen size.
I am looking to buy 1 of those 2 laptops but can't decide.....
thanks -
Acer isn't exactly good in cooling designs, but recently asus also made very bad cooling systems in their current g series...
-
Acer 8942G uses an ATI HD5850 gfx card with DDR3 memory only, making it a lot slower than the HD5870 with GDDR5.
-
but according to this website:
http://blog.gsmarena.com/is-acer-aspire-8942g-728g1280twn-what-gamers-dream-of/
it says it's " AMD HD5850 video with 1GB GDDR5 " with 8942G as well..... ? -
Everywhere else I look it shows GDDR3 so my guess is a typo in that blog....looked at 3-4 other websites for that model.

I see after posting here, you posted an entire thread on this topic in the Acer forum......
Anyhow, since you only see 'screen size' as the only difference in these two models, I would encourage further research. You may find the G73JH information posted 'here' helpful.
I have owned models of both manufacturers, and a couple areas I would encourage you investigate, are customer support, and warranty coverage. IMO, the two companies are not equal here, and Asus definitely gets my vote here. I think if you honestly research this, you will come to the same conclusions.
The G73JH-A1 base model prices in at $1,645.00 (U.S.), making this model the better ' value'. Furthermore, equipped with the ATI HD 5870, there is no doubt the G73JH will be the ' performance' leader as well. It does not really matter here, to debate if the Acer 8942G will have GDDR3 or GDDR5. This is yet to be seen, and the G73JH will still have an edge with it's 5870 card. Also I might point out, european Acer 8942G resellers have listed it with GDDR3 since pre-orders began.
Another area you may consider, is personal preferences. The G73JH-A1 model will be fully customizable to your liking, whereas the Acer 8942G will only available in pre-configured, model specific variants.
So there you have it! In my view, in areas of personal customization, customer support, warranty coverage, performance, and price.... the Asus G73JH-A1 will be the clear WINNER!
sidenote: a couple of days ago, I found an actual european Acer 8942G review..... I don't have a link at the moment..... Google it, do your homework..... anyhow as I recall, this Acer model did not fair as well, as some would have hoped.

since they have photos of its air vents on the bottom of the laptop would the Zalman NC-2000 be the ideal cooler for the G73 or should i invest elsewhere?
-
Judging by the pictures and dimensions of the laptop, the NC2000 would be an ideal cooler for the G73. Personally, I'm planning to use the NC2000.
-
What is everyone's take on the thermaltakes?
-
The Tai-Chi M+ or whatever it is called, looks quite good. However I feel that the slant may be too much with the keyboard already at a 5 degree tilt.
-
I'm sorry is that talking about pre-shipping customization, or does it cover user modifications?
-
from what i've read thus far, pre-shipping...i believe user modification is a "no no" and voids your warranty as you are not "authorized" as the resellers are to perform work on the computers...
-
that's annoying
-
And if the HDD will brake and we change it? are we going to lose the warranty?
-
I'm just going to use antec notebook cooler ( http://www.notebookcooler.info/media/ante-notebook-cooler-s.jpg)
Many people think this notebook cooler doesn't work well, but for me it works perfectly. Luvin it. =) -
I believe that doesn't apply - one posted that normal things that get changed such as RAM and HDD do not apply.
-
Hey guys somethings you usually use with your laptop? Like for cleaning or stuff like that? What's a good one for the monitor as well..
-
Socket Wrench, Dremel, and Wd40.

For Laptop Cooling Pad...
I use the NZXT ACC-NT-CRYO-LX 120MM Aluminum Notebook Cooler. The air flow from the fans push the air into the laptop, rather then pull it out. This will be great for the G73. It will work with the internal cooling fans rather than agentst it.
The NZXT has 4 USB ports on the back, speed control for it's fans, and folds in half for easy storage or taking it on the go.
It is a little heavy, but don't mind it.
Hope this helps -
Where can I find information on an after market dealer in Texas for upgrading or placing Thermal Compound without voiding the warrenty?
-
hi, sorry for posting what seem like similiar questions in the 2 forums. I just wanted to get different opinions (after all, ASUS users may have different opinions to Acer users) from 2 different cohorts of people.
However, I have made up my mind and will go ahead with getting an ASUS G73J. -
Is that big enough for 17 inches?
-
This cooler looks good to me. A bit heavy and bulky but it will probably stay at my desk most of the time. I like that its fans are adjustable and that it has the usb hub. How is the fan noise on it?

Good choice!
Welcome to the team!
-
Does anybody know a european online store that sells these cryo lx coolers?
I also read that when the fans are on running on maximum there might be unsuficient power going to the usb ports... -
Any idea on the v+ series then? It's pretty much the same price as the M. $340 for 80G M, $270 for 64G V+
Just in case any of you aren't following both threads
-
yes, I used this cooler when I had 7915u FX.
-
Now from this video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH9nAytIRlY wouldnt the Zalman NC2000 offer better alignment with the G73's vents than the CRYO LX? From what i have read these are the 2 best notebook coolers out there and im just trying to figure out which would allow the best natural alignment with the G73 vents -
not exactly "2 best". it seems this one http://www.virtual-hideout.net/reviews/Thermaltake_Massive_23_CS/index.shtml cools better than LX
mine arrives the day after tomorrow=)) -
Nice. Do when you get it you could check out how much of an incline the angle on the Massive CS is? Reason being is that the G73 has a built in 5 degree angle on the keyboard so im hoping to get a cooler with very little incline. The Zalman is adjustable between 7 to 9 degrees of incline and dont know about any other cooler. thx
-
http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/thermaltake_massive23_cs/4.htm
Oh and I saw this review just now showing the Cryo to be significantly cooler than the quite a few coolers. its too bad that the fans seem to be aligned out of sync with the G73. Also anyone with a cryo can you tell me how this thing is if you were on the couch with the notebook on your lap with the cryo under it? seems like i would need something under the cryo instead of just having it on my lap -
it all depends on where uy cpu is situated. mine in a center with slightly move to back. g73 cpu is on one side. in this case cryo fans are where are they must be. but g73 cpu intakes according to pics are in the bottom center or smth near here. so its up to to u to decide what to prefer
-
ahh so basically you cant really go wrong with either one between the cryo, thermaltake or zalman? lol
-
well according this review http://www.hitechlegion.com/reviews/cooling/notebook-cooling/1171?start=5 the thermaltake 23 st (which is old variation of new thermaltake 23 cs) cools much better than cryo. as i've already told efficiency of cooling depends where the cooler fans are - and where the notebook intakes are too. if they match efficiency of cooling grows up
cryo, thermaltake or zalman are all great cooling pads - but for my laptop zalman is crappy due to bottom fans, cryo doesn't available for me - so for me is beter to take thermaltake -
ahhh. any advice on which compliments the G73's intakes best? -
The NZXT CRYO LX Aluminum Notebook Cooler has very quiet fans...I really like this cooler. It has a nice angle as well. Have to see how the cooler pad angle works with the G73 angled key board
-
What is the direction of the air flow for the Thermaltake Massive23 ST Notebook Cooler?
Does it push the air flow into the laptop or pull it away? -
Does anyone have any information on The "CPU LevelUp Power Boost"?
Is this true overclocking and is it simply toggled from a button on or by keyboard? -
well zalman is unsuitable i think. cryo or thermaltake are more suitable for g73. but cryo has more angle as i can see from photos..
it makes air flow into. i know that at least most of the laptop coolers do this including cryo
just google "CPU Power Boost"
