ok, finally back in the states and just took off my gpu heatsink, it doesn't have any putty looking stuff like you guys described, it has little blue pads over al the area's i am assuming remove those and apply paste to where they were?
-
The blue pads are the "putty". Yes, apply the thermal paste where they are. Also be aware that when you reseat the heatsink, if you see the temps shoot up and they aren't supposed to, you need to make sure the components are touching the heatsink. Sometimes its hard to get a good contact when reseating. Just and FYI so that you watch out for that.
Good luck and happy modding
-
i am finished with the mod and good news is no overheating, i think i am going to retry it though because i ran furmark directly before i did this and after 20mins was stable at 87C now same settings stable at 86C. i expected a little better, i probably messed up something
-
well did it again, i thought i had too much on there last time but i think i had the right amount. There is a pretty good size gap in there that you have to fill with compound, I guess that is why some people are usind copper shims? I have seisku thermal tape, would it work just to apply the tape and push the heatsink down onto it and make it stay down?
-
stabilized at 83c this time, i will just leave it alone til i get my copper blocks

I'm pretty much set on getting the G72GX with the Q9000 2.00 GHz Quad Core processor this week, but before I do, I need to know how it sounds on idle or when simply browsing the web or writing something with Word. At most, I'll do the heatsink mod that ren3g7ade did with his laptop (I'll be doing a lot of traveling so using a cooling pad isn't really an option). Am I going be living with a jet engine sound like I did with my old HP?
FYI - I'm getting this instead of the G73 since I need a laptop with an eSATA connector and ExpressCard slot. -
The copper shims are a good call between the GPU and HS (copper pennies, made before 1982, and ground flat on either side work just as well). You want a solid contact between the HS and the GPU core. Make sure you clean the copper shim with alcohol and then put thermal compound on both sides of the shim.
-
I can barely hear the fan when the laptop is idle. Its very quiet. I can't really even hear my hdd's.
-
According to this post http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5771729&postcount=13, you should have kept your thermal pads on your GPU. But I did the same as you and the highest my gpu temp gets is ~91C, which is only for cpu and gpu demanding games such as gtaiv and sc2.
-
Yeah, so given the current situation, fdrotary should pick up some thin copper shims, clean and polish them, put thermal paste on either side and mount it between the gpu and the stock heatsink. this will provide a solid contact for thermal transferrence.
This type of shim will work. -
Hey guys, has anyone got their bluetooth working yet? If so, could you give me some steps on how to plz? Ive downloaded and installed the correct drivers, but when I want to send a file via bluetooth it takes me to a kinda "sending wizard" and when I ask it to send it says I need my bluetooth device turned on (which it is - my phone that is) so yeah, plz enlighten me
-
It has been a week since that happened. Hopefully it will not happen again. I put the GPU speeds on the Nvidia stock, not the Asus.
I didn't pay BestBuy extra for warranty, so I don't know if I could change it. I probably could not anyway as I do not live in the USA. -
i guess i am going to buy the copper shims...just ordered them. hope they get here faster then the copper heatsinks which just got here today and are installed. I got to 85c running furmark 1920 x 1080 AA 8x for 20mins also idk the exact ambient but i know it was a good bit warmer so i am happy thus far.. Before i did any of this i was hitting 95c in 12minutes.
-
Excellent!! That sounds like a much better temp for furmark. I think the combination of the copper shim and the thermal paste will help ensure a tighter fit and hence, hopefully even more of a decrease in temps. Post some pics of your install/layout.
Glad you were able to get them down to a reasonable range... -
Mine didn't come with any Bluetooth hardware. It's the bestbuy version. Which model do you have?
Cheers, -
Hi all, does any body have an issue with the keyboard stopping for a split second while holding down a key for a while? It shows up apx 5-40 seconds not only in arma2 but also in word pad etc. I have taken it back 3 times and am on my 4th one still does the same thing. Im really liking this computer as you can tell. It is a BB model. Thanks for any feedback
-
does anyone know where to find that Asus video that plays when you first use the laptop?
-
Did you try turning on v-sync in the game?
-
Can I swap the stock P8700 for a Q9100? Is anyone running a Q9100 right now?
Does the 15% Asus software overclock work ok? What are the temps like? -
If you've got the Best Buy model, you can't use quad cores.
-
Do they use different boards? or can I simply flash the bios to the retail A1 version?
-
Can the quad cores use the built in overclocking software?
-
I'm not sure if the motherboard is different, but they limit it to dual cores, probably to get the cheaper price on those units. No way around it.
-
Nope. Use setfsb. ICS9LPRS929AKLF.
-
thought of that but it also happens in word pad or notes when im not in the game this is how I figured it was not just the game
-
did you try disabling the acpi compliant battery method in the device manager? there are some latency issues that are caused by it.
-
ok, makes sense.
Well in that case, an overclocked P8700 at 2.8Ghz > Quad at 2.26 me thinks... -
will try that now ... by the way thanks for your input...
-
do I just disable it or remove it and if I re-boot wont it reinstall it?
-
i just disabled it. it is still installed.
-
Man, thanks for your help but..... still does it. I can hook up a Logitech illuminated keyboard to this beast and there is no problem, also if I run a live cd from ubuntu it still does it. Maybe its the mb or kb causing this problem. But that would mean ASUS has some defects out there that need to be addressed. 4 out of 4 of the units I got do this, not unless they were giving me the same units each time I brought one back, and I have seen others on other forums have the same issue, not many but still some.
-
Well that's a pity...I use an external keyboard and mouse normally too, which is a pretty good way to go, but I don't think I've had the issues you have. Maybe there is a difference between the G72 and the G71 in that regard.

I am looking for a laptop backpack for my g72gx. I purchased one, but I have to stretch the zipper to close it ,and it’s very tight. I want a back pack style around $60. Also, I would like it to fit my Zalman NC2000 at the same time. Does anyone have any recommendations?
-
Here's a couple of good choices.
Targus TXL617
Targus CityGear Notebook BackPack -
Try disabling the ATKGFNEX Service. It is for the hotkeys. It might be interfering with the keyboard as it is polling. It's worth a shot. I saw someone on another forum mention stuttering as a result of it.
-
Can the X9100 CPU still get the 15% overclock?
-
Yes I believe so. I think that only the quad cores are not "allowed" to be overclocked.
-
Can you set the overclocking software to run consistently at +15% from the time the notebook powers up?
-
I believe that that's what TurboGear is for. you could add it to run at startup.

hey guys ive had my rbbx05 for a month. ive kept everything stock. ive been playing dragon age and my only problem is the weak sound. i tried pc pitstop and seen a few drivers needed to be updated.
the live update would be great if it kept my drivers updated.
this is what i learned from this forum:
turn off sleep mode
get hwmonitor to keep an eye on temps
nvidia update/ 3rd party
thermal glue
and the program to discard misc. driver stuff
ive read through this forum and i thank everybody for thier input. i hope there would be a g72 update simular to windows update.
any complete guide or a link to recommended g72 updates would help me out so much. -
Ugg .. My GPU is overheating something fierce.
I have had my unit for less than a month (3weeks) and noticed my games lagging or freezing up.
I looked at my temp during game play and its over 100c!
I do not have a laptop cooler yet but come on this is nuts. The things I have tried so far:
Uninstalled video drivers
restarted in safe mode and used driver sweeper
restarted and installed 195.62 from NVIDIA
Playing on a flat wooden surface
I still have major issues. In fact at idle temperatures my GPU is 90c
Any help would be appreciated.

If you're comfortable with it, try opening up your laptop to make sure the heatsink on card is seated properly. I'm pretty sure this is a hardware issue.
-
I currently have the back off and I removed the heatsink from what I hope is the video card
It just has sticky blue tabs over the small chips. Im not sure if thats the actual video card or just the video ram -
I may just take this back to BB tonight to swap it out. I wonder if the thermal compound on the video card is defective. The temp's for everything else is great just the video card is horrible.
-
The blue pads are the thermal pads for your video card. If your heatsink was not in full contact with all the pads, this could be the cause of the high temps.

Loving the laptop. I have the P8700 dual core from Best Buy. I run the machine stock with the latest Nvidia beta driver. Questions:
1. Was scoring 10,100 or so with the original driver from Asus. With the latest Nvidia beta driver which seems to run better I score 9450. Is this normal and simply a driver difference?
2. Any suggestions for safe, permanent, CPU and GPU overclock settings? No laptop cooler or any mod done. Suggested GPU overclocking utility?
3. I updated the bios to the latest version. Any bios settings/tweaks suggested?
Only issue I had was recurring BSOD after updating to the Nvidia drivers. That was fixed by either returning to the Asus driver and better yet by doing a complete removal of the drivers including using driversweeper and then installing the Nvidia versions. Never had a BSOD afterwards. Thanks in advance! Great machine! -
3D Mark is a synthetic test, so don't be concerned. It may have even been that that run scored a bit lower because another application was running in the background etc...
Your framerates are likely to be higher in new games. If the performance is lower (it's hard to tell though, we are talking low single digit frames here), use the latest non-beta GTX 260M patch.
The Asus Turbo Gear will give you a safe 15% (2.53Ghz +15%) overclock.
The Asus default for the GPU is 500/800/1250, nVidia's reference speeds are 550/950/1375. Most user reviews I've read go with the reference speed using Nvidia System tools profile management. -
Thanks for the info. Turns out that difference came from my connected monitor bringing the res up a bit horizontal wise on the test, 1024 vs 720 I think it is. Redid it on the computer's LCD alone and it came out 10165 stock. I found the following site's Windows 7 tweaks useful, seems to have helped FPS a little: http://www.blackviper.com
Again thanks for the tips. Happy playing! -
Yup took it back to BB and now my idle temps are under 55 and my gaming's under 75.
