Surprising that the T9900 is more expensive on ebay. Both the T9900 and the X9100 are good options for a dual core chip. From what I have read, the TDP on both processors is about the same under normal load and the same clocks. The higher rating for TDP from Intel for the x9100 is due to the unlocked multiplier and the higher energy use when the x9100 is overclocked.

On a side note, I wish they had more than 3 options for Core 2 Quad but I suppose its an obsolete technology now. For now though the Q9000 serves me well for a mix of gaming and dev.

qx 9300 is a beast youd never need more than that for the hardware you have.

I'm having issues with my fan again. Getting it cleaned out has worked for a few months, but now the fan always makes the grinding sound. It was just cleaned yesterday. Looks like I have to RMA it. I just hope that if they send me a replacement, it isn't another G72 because their fans are crap.

Im not actually sure where you are looking there

edit ok i did find that

under chipset mine says p43 in the same place. We obviously have different machines I dont know what to tell you other than that.

I have had my G72Gx-a5 since febuary/2010. I had some issues with the gtx 260m video starting in august/early sept. I redid all drivers and added a cooler, but to stop the frame-rate drop I had to lower grafix settings and keep the temps below 93 deg C. Finally I set up an rma because I could no longer run any grafix (not even open web pages >.<) without it hitting 96+ deg C. but after it hit about 80+C it would drop the frames to about 2-5 fps..... and even after it cooled down they would remain that way untill a reboot. Now the good news. They said there was a video card fault and replaced it and all the thermals :) When I got it back the video was idling about 39 deg C!!!!!!! But my cpu was spiking to about 90 deg C!!! And the fan was running full blast. So I called them up and they gave me permission to open the case up. I found that 2 of the screws on the cpu heatsink were loose about 3 1/2 to 4 full turns!. So I removed all and made sure the heat sink was seated well. After I tightened all the screws and booted up it idled about 55-60 deg C for cpu and 42-45ish on the gpu. Now after a day they haave leveled out and the cpu now idles at 42 and the gpu is at 45!!! super awesome!!! I did a stress test running a program called CpuStabTest and after 3 hours the max temp was 62 for cpu and 65 for gpu. It only tests the cpu at 100% usage. So later I ran starcraft 2 with setfsb on, the processor @2.2ghz and all grafix setting ultra and the gtx 260m at 550/950/1375 temps peaked while playing: Cpu 62 deg C! Gpu 75 deg C! so my recomendation to any1 with heat issues if you cant diy send it in and say its running tooo hot and have them replace the thermals for you ;-)
so thats it for my 2 cents hope it helps some1

SO I saw this question around pages 40-50ish about this weird noise like brrt from speakers and a bad lag in video. I had this problem on this laptop it happened because the power cord where it plugs into the laptop went defective and kept losing connection and jumping from a/c to battery and back. I went into settings and made all stay the same for both modes battery and a/c and the issue was fixed. Asus replaced the brick and I don't have to worry about the issue anymore.

EDIT: because I have horrible grammar >.<

Glad to hear a story with a happy ending for once :D Seems like the quality went downhill from the first iteration of the product. I have the first generation of G71Gx that was released and really had very few issues with it. Most of these were resolved by adding the copper ramsinks (see my sig for the picture) The moral of the story seems to be, make ASUS fix the issues rather than try, as some components of late may be subpar or not seated correctly.

I have a few early g71's as well and so far I have had to send in 2 of those as well for defective GPU i was wondering if my editing and presentation work was overworking the gpu's cuz they only lasted about 3-6 months ......... Other than that I have had NO other issues!! they all perform very well the models are the G71GX-A1, so they have the Q9000, 6gig, gtx 260m, 2 320gb 7200rpm, one is older with the 8700 chip in it

I have Speccy. It is from Piriform, the makers of Defraggler and CCleaner. CPU-Z also works, just click on the mainboard tab. Now both programs say that my chipset is P45/P43. Hopefully here's an image. Click on thumbnail.

Been a while and everything was fine up until this point. i have bee playing grid racing with no problems exept it lags when i try to use my usb xbox controller....if i switch ports it get a little better but not completely....what i need to know is if there is some why to make the data transfer rate faster as i assume its intermittent lagging in this game is due to a bottle neck in the comunication between mobo and usbe controller.... just a though thanks for any help......

Did you try cleaning the fan? This seems familiar to a post that I answered a while back on page 102. Hopefully this link works:

I'm not too computer savy, but I have an Asus g72gx-rbbxo5, and my dvd drive suddenly stopped reading anything I put in, so I want to get another drive, and I was just curious what's a good compatible drive I could replace it with?

Did you try cleaning it first with a CD/DVD cleaning disc? I got my son a new game for his G71 for Christmas and it wouldn't read the disc, but my G72 would. I used a cleaning disc and that solved the problem.

If it really is dead and not just dirty and you're interested in Blu-Ray, you might like one of these:

Most folks have had to repaste and/or clean the fans to get the temps lower on the G72. I had mine done under warranty.

My son now has my G72GX and he can't find a way to disable the trackpad in the BIOS.

The G73 has a BIOS setting to disable the internal pointing device. Does the G72 have something similar?

He says it does not work. The trackpad is still active. He's annoyed because Fn+F9 worked on his G50 BB version.

I have a G72GX and Fn+F9 works as does the touchpad disable button to the left of the Power On button. Maybe they've been disabled?

I have Crysis Maximum Edition. I played it on high settings without any heat issues. However, I do clean my fan regularly and did the copper heatsink mod. I do not use any type of external cooling fan and have not had to repaste the gpu or cpu.

I'd check your fan first. I've learned that it doesn't take much dust build up to cause issues.

In order to get the Fn keys and/or the quick access buttons at the top working, you have to install all of the ATK packages that ASUS released (if you did a clean install). None of my buttons "additional" functions worked until I did that.

The other function keys work but I will advise him to re-install the ATK drivers just to be sure.

No, it's a discontinued model. The G73JW is the current nvidia based Asus top gaming machine. I imagine new sandy bridge based systems will become available in the April - May timeframe.

    Run disk management, start->run->diskmgmt.msc

Then create a partition & format it. Congrats on the SSD purchase. :)

Hey, it's about a year now since I have the G72GX and I started to notice a lag issues recently in Left 4 Dead about 15 min of game play frame drop rock bottom about 5 frames which make it not playable at all. Temp hits about 98C. Is this a GPU Overheating issue which cause the game to Lag hard? Time to get that Thermal Paste redone?

Yes, it is most likely overheating. I had an authorized service center repaste and thoroughly disassemble and clean the fan. Works fine now.

mmm Should I go to a local near by authorized service center to get that done? or Just go with the warranty that I had with geek squad? Would it be a lot longer to get it done if i sent it over to Geek squad at Best buy? or is it just about the same? ( yeah I don't want to wait for 2 weeks just so i can play again. ) Out of curiosity how much would it cost me if I were to send it to the service center?

If you have the BB support agreement and your local BB has good techs that handle this on-site that works. I took mine to a small authorized service company. They said they do not support the BB versions so you may not have a choice. Just make sure the BB you use has techs capable of handling the repaste and cleaning. Some do not and end up sending the systems out. BB can be great in some locations and not so much in others.

I would second panzer here. BB is usually hit or miss. The techs at the one in my area are completely uneducated and inept. I would recommend with the techs to see who would be doing the repaste to make sure I was comfortable with their skill level at the very least. If it wasn't for the warranty, I'd do it myself (the main reason I haven't modded the laptop too much)

Here's an interesting one. (First post BTW). I am a long time desktop user / builder / overclocker and now have my very own G72GX that I supidly traded my i7-930 system for. Long story short, 3 days after I get the laptop it begins to BSOD and crash and be generally a PITA. I run some tests, replace the HDD, upgrade to 6GB of RAM and all is well until last night when it begins to do the same thing. I really don't know what else to try with this thing, short of putting it up for sale and hoping for the best. I am at the end of my rope. Any other owners have some insight? Should I make my own thread?

Which version do you have? BB or A1. What CPU? Was there a fresh factory install on the system? What are you doing when it crashes. More info needed if folks are going to help.

it does it with two hard drives?

switch the bay of the boot hard drive
    do a ram test

run it with just one stick of ram also.

I was under the impression that all G71/G72 laptops came standard with 6GB of RAM, so why did you have to upgrade to 6GB? Also if you could the model #, the chipset details, clock settings for GPU, CPU/GPU/HDD/Battery temps using HWMonitor. Did the owner do a fresh install for you? what programs do you have running in the tray? Also what tests did you run the first time that led you to the replacement of components? As panzer said, hard to diagnose issues with no background info.

I know I can add an external bluetooth adapter to the G72GX. Does anyone know if it can be done internally?

I've noticed that when closing the lid on my G72GX, occasionally the blue image on the lid will blink (I assume indicating sleep mode). Occasionally, however, it does not blink and it's on those occasions that the laptop will not wake up. Has anyone else run into this issue?

There are a number of buttons above the keyboard on the G72GX. Some are intuitive and some are not. Of course the user's manual says nothing about them. Anyone want to give some hints?

Yeah I put the original 500GB HDD back in it to copy my data to in case everything corrupts. I don't want to lose it.

This is a 1A according to the bottom. (I would have thought it means A1, but perhaps not...
There was not a fresh factory install on the system when I got it. I have, however, installed fresh Windows 7 many times since getting it and installing all the Asus bloatware myself.

From the research I have done, you are correct in saying that it was supposed to have 6GB of RAM installed. I will make a new thread so as not to clutter this one up.

Mine came with Bluetooth. By default the Azurewave card that is installed is both a BT adapter and a WLAN card I believe. I assume one could find another care like that to replace the stock one.

My light blinks whenever I close it.

    Buttons L to R:
Direct Console, Express Gate, TurboBoost, Enable/Disable Touchpad, Power

Thank you both for your feed back Panzer and renegade. I took it to BB at geek squade and they decided to send it over to an authorize service. The guy doesnt even know what a GPU is when i told him that my GPU has constantly been over heating and hitting high temps.

Hello guys. First time poster, but I have been watching this thread since I got my G72gx BB model back in October of 2010 and have learned quite a bit about this laptop from this thread. I have been a desktop user/builder since I was 12 and have owned 2 other laptops before, HP dv6000 and 9000 series, with a possible faulty nVidia graphics chip(blah)! I have to say, the G72 is a BEAST and I love it!!

So anyways, I have done my re-pasting, with arctic silver ceramique just because I still suck at conserving thermal compound and I dislike the spread method. I have also done the cover mod for the fan, which I must say turned out very well and exactly the way I wanted. Now I just ordered the Copper RAM Sinks last night, which will probably take about a month to get here, but at least I got it ordered now. So my temps right now idled in a room of about 75F, too lazy for conversion, CPU 34C and GPU 58C. I'm liking the numbers so far and I know that the copper ram sinks will help more, but how much?

I'm also wondering, since I don't have an active cooler for this laptop, just a tripod stand with tray, what you guys think about this cooler CM NP U3. Now I'm on a budget and wasn't too fond of the coolers with just one big fan in the middle like NZXT and Zalman. I love the modular design of the U3 ,the fact that it's metal with a lot of perforation and it's about half the cost of the giant fan competitors. If anyone out there that has this cooler, could you please give me some temps and thoughts on the U3. I don't recall if this cooler has been talked about in this thread, if it has, I'm sorry.

Sorry for the long post, but I usually have to be detailed.
