I'd definitely do it Aramis. I only need the SSD for my OS and apps so to save money I went with the 80G Intel X25-M and that's probably even overkill size wise. You can spend crazy money on these as you go bigger.

Edit: thank you ronin for that benchmark, now I know it's something specific to my computer -
FWIW, this was discussed a few weeks ago and there appeared to be different benchmark values depending on the benchmark software used.
For example, if I remember correctly, I personally saw ~150MB/s in one bench app while another app showed ~250MB/s. -
Here's my run. Get the SW here.
P.S. No problem betaflame, thanks for pushing the OC envelope!Attached Files:

HDtune and HDtach said 130-160MB/s
Your program AS SSD pulled nearly the full 230MB/s speed. ???
Oh welp
It looks like this chipset behaves badly with certain benchmarks. I feel MUCH better now. -
-
no, HDTune and HDTach were screwing up, the AS SSD program used the windows I/O and showed the correct speed.
If windows i/o is going full speed I could care less what the synthetic benchmarks say. -
Deep...
Anyways... I fixed my camera issue. Managed to install it. Downloaded CPU-Z and AMD clock tool, but neither show my graphics card temps! What gives? How to start those sensors? Pie?
Also i would really appreciate the name of the little app that disables the touchpad while typing. Anyone, please? -

for GPU sensor, you have to enable the temperature reading in AMD clock tool or you can use "HWinfo32" as well... -

How can you disable the caps lock notification in the right bottom screen?
It's irritating when playing Bad Company 2 because when I accidentally press the caps lock Bad Company 2 goes into windowed mode. -
Cheers, -
Hey do you guys know/think the Open Box g73s from newegg qualify for Asus' 1 year accidental damage warranty?
-
-
I don't get the capslock notification either. I did re-install the Asus hotkey handler (and a couple of others that I don't recall off the driver disk) after installing W7U on my SSD.
-
Ok kids. Just got my HD caddy in from Asusparts.eu . It's perfect. It DOES NOT come with screws (luckily I had extra) but I have it installed and working in my G73 now. Expect about a month wait currently, especially if you're importing it.
-
G73 still running smooth after a little over a week's worth of easy use.
I'm not having any of the common issues. The design is friggin' fantastic!
I found the checkbox to automatically disable the touch pad when the USB mouse is connected. (Nice feature, it's located on the Device Settings tab of the Synaptics setup utility.)
Can any fellow owers comment on the following:
1) I don't see a recovery partition. Is it hidden? I've got 4 partitions and the only thing related is a "RECOVERY.DAT" file on the C drive.
OS (C81.7 GB free of 116 GB
DATA (D329 GB free of 329 GB
Local Disk (F232 GB free of 232 GB
Local Disk (G232 GB free of 232 GB
2) Any way to improve a 5.9 WEI score for the Primary Hard Disk? (Unfortunately, I don't have a SSD.)
3) Did you guys have to update to DirectX 11? Mine came loaded with DirectX 10.
Thanks in advance! -
You know, the funny thing is my gskill falcon 128gb SSD is telling windows to give me a 5.9 for hd. Which is very strange considering it's FAR faster than the 500gb hds that the g73 originally came with.
-
I'm using a G Skill Falcon 128GB with the 1819 FW update for trim in my G73JH and it gives 7.3.
I assume you are running the Intel RST 9.6 drivers and have TRIM capable firmware on the drive? -
Is the buzzing whine sound normal when running a game, it is silent when i'm on the desktop or browsing or playing a music, only happens when i run any game, no drop in performance or anything but it emits a buzzing whine sound, not necessarily high pitch.
Before I forget the buzzing sound comes from the right mid side of the keyboard, not from the speakers itself since i muted the sound and the buzzing whine is still there -
Oh for the one asking about the palmrest disabler, go to the synaptics website and get their touchpad driver. It has an included palmrest detector and allows for the 2 finger scrolling. -
Another thing that makes a whine are the keyboard backlights of all things. Again my hearing is really good, and both are incredibly quiet on mine (the G73JH's fans are significantly louder than the whine. -

For the third button in the top left buttons that changes the screen mode, it usually works just fine but after I restarted my laptop, I can't change it. Every time I press that button, it just says Normal Mode and it won't change. It was working last night also. Anyone have this problem?

Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
2) No. Spinners max 5.9
3) No. DX11 is there. Run the Unigine Heaven benchmark and see if the Dragon has spikes.

Still no luck on getting a shipping date for my G73, and now that I pissed off one reseller, I don't foresee it any time in the near future either
Jan 30th- ??? -
Anyway, to answer your question, I turned on the auto-disable feature by clicking on the "Show hidden icons" arrow in the bottom right corner of the desktop toolbar, then clicking "Synaptics Pointing Device" > "Pointing Device Properties" > "Device Settings" tab > then check the box next to "Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached".
If you don't have the shortcut to the Synaptics utility you can also find it under Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers > then right click on the Asus gaming Mouse > Mouse Settings > Device Settings tab > checkbox.
Hope that helps. -
2) It's a RPM limitation? I thought others with the stock hard drives were getting higher scores. I probably confused SSD scores.
3) I opened dxdiag and sure enough, it was DirectX 11 (should have tried this initially). However, the weird thing is under the "Performance Information and Tools" graphics column is states DirectX version 10. -
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
1) You're welcome
2) I believe it's a WEI limitation (our notebook drives score 5.9 and so does a VelociRaptor, go figure).
Yup, WEI can be sensitive to a SSD score (e.g. only score a 7.2 with an Intel X25m G2 when you should score a 7.7 can indicate an issue or you can see how one brands performance compares to another by a few tenths), but imo, WEI just points out 4 things:
a) crappy spinner <5.9
b) spinner 5.9
c) unoptimized SSD 6.0 - 7.0
d) optimized SSD depending on brand 7.1 - 7.9
and it doesn't seem to show any love for the folks that go out and buy multiple SSDs and a hardware R0 card by saying "omg, you spent some money, here's a 10.0 for you"
3) meh -
I have this machine on order but prefer to use Windows XP SP2 x86 as the host OS. Have any of you owners out there put XP on yours? If so, how did it work out and how much functionality, if any did you lose? I know XP leaves me with DX9 only, but I rarely play FPS type games (though I'll want Diablo III when it comes out...)
Any thoughts? -
-
Well I've had a lot of fun with mine till now. Had it quite some time and all of a sudden I get the bad screens I've seen on the forum before.
Already as soon as I turn it on. Left side of the screen vertical thin lines in all colors and right side very scrambled, hard to read (almost impossible) the active screen in weird colors.
Using an old PC now to view through remote connection. This stinks, never saw it coming. It's been running in normal mode. Tried keeping the battery out and unplugged, reset button. Seems I've to join the RMA club eventually. -

I did see a bit strange screens rarely when starting a game, but it was always just 1-2 secs, then all was perfect. -
It isn't! It's something with the LCD, I think inside some circuit or perhaps just a wire has interference from a weird disturbing signal. Just connected a CRT to the display connector and there is no problem on that! The screen on the VGA connector shows perfect image...

Does it do anything when you move the lid back and forth with the display on?
-
Think it's some kinda interference, bad shieldings? -
Hi guys
I was wondering...did all of you fill out and send your registration card to Asus? Is that all required to register and activate your standard + Accidental damage protection warranty? I just sent out my card last week along with the invoice. Is this it? do they send a confirmation by email or something?
thanks,
varun -
there's an easier way to register it online. See the OP of the G73jh-A1 thread (not owners lounge)
-
I did register online on the ADW page..but it still said I should mail them a copy of the confirmation email with a copy of the original invoice.
-
I should do the warranty thing, links? -
is there anyone who find additional HDD caddy?
I bought G73JH-X1 at Newegg.com there was just one HDD and HDD bracket.
I also bought Intel X-25... oh, man, i couldn't install it..
I cant be patient to experience it! -
asusparts.eu has the caddy apparently. -
Just expect about a month wait, especially if you're importing it.
-
Do you have a link to the part for your lazy friends here on the forum?
I have a 320GB drive sitting on my desk that wants to be in my X1 just for additional storage. It won't slow down my 7200RPM factory drive if I put a 5400 RPM drive in the second bay for storage will it? -
-
First one- the serial # ends in 20-1. And no, it won't slow it down any because you won't be RAID'ing them as there's no RAID option for this laptop. -

Just to let you know.
I took it up with Asus about the idle temperatures of the Radeon and it NOT downclocking the video memory from 1000 MHz to say 200 or 300 MHz. They are going to forward my comments to the R&D team.
I hope something comes out of it but I'm beginning to see that Ati simply has problems properly downclocking their hardware when it's idle and clocking it up again without causing all kinds of weird problems like grey screens.
I began to realize this after a comment I saw for the leaked 10.6 drivers where it was mentioned that to solve problems with grey screens and artifacts they had to increase the 2D clock from 157 MHz to 400 MHz.
So maybe it's not possible to downclock the memory speed which continues to be weird for a laptop chip whether or not it's a high end one. -
Windows 7 is more efficient when it comes to multi-threading and the x64 version can see all of the ram as opposed to just 3gb? that XP32 can see and as you said before you would be stuck on DX9 while we are moving to DX11. Why do you want to keep XP? If its for the fact that XP is lighter weight and you want performance than I think you will be doing yourself a disservice. If you really just want to play old games that aren't compatible with 7 then you might have something.
Win7 -> XP is like moving from XP -> Win98 -
Just as a testiment of the quality of this machine, not only do I use it here in Iraq, with all this dust and dirt constantly swirling around, but the other day I did the unthinkable... on accident of course!!
I grabbed my juice drink that I had on my desk and wasnt paying attention and went to shake it up a little to make sure it stayed mixed properly. Well, the cap wasnt on and probably a good 6-8oz of water ended up all over my laptop keyboard and everything. Well, I immediately shut down, cleaned it up with a towel and blew out the water I could get. After about 10 minutes, turned it on and did a functions test. Have not had one single hiccup or issue with it. So I believe that you truely can not question the build quality of the G73 at all!!
Cudo's to asus for building yet another amazing product.
