what's the initial boot time after you upgrade to this ssd?
i mght pull the trigger since i need something for my trip on 12/20
-
I just checked a couple mp3's and some videos. No distortion on my machine.
-
Without any optimizations, it's 25 seconds to usable desktop. I haven't done anything to the drive other than make sure that defrag is off and confirm that TRIM is enabled on Win7. What bothers me is that I know that it can be much less if I can figure out how to disable the black screen flash before the desktop appears form boot up. I think it has something to do with TMM or something like that. But I'm not sure how to get rid of it yet. I bet my boot times can be sub 20 with TMM turned off.
As a result, I don't even bother putting my computer in hibernation/sleep. I just turn the machine off and on when I need to. -
thanks, i will pull the trigger in a bit. you helped me make my decision.
is that including anti-virus and firewall bootup? or you don't have that
also how did you clean install? did you have a spare Win7 w/ key laying around? or used the recovery?` -
No problem. And yes, that is including Avast Antivirus and Windows firewall. I also did a clean install using a USB flash drive and a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate that I was using for another machine that I'm not using anymore.
My clean install + necessary drivers/utility programs left me with 58-60 processes and about 1-1.4GB memory usage. Much better than the 70-75 or so processes that come out of the box. -
thanks, i bought the drive on ebay... looks like people are stealling everything. there were 8 left yesterday and today after i bought, only 2 left. looks like 20% bing is going nuts.
oh btw, you can grab a ul80vt for around 600 even on bing -
With my Indilinx 64GB SSD, this thing boots up in 17 seconds, including BIOS to where I can use it. All of the tray icons loaded, etc... This is a clean install of Windows + all the drivers required to function properly. This includes the functions keys and several other asus apps to run properly.
Battery life is 'ok' but I expected a bit more. Still, I think I was expecting the 5600mAh numbers and I know that I did not have that battery. I don't think you are going to get more than 5.5 hours of battery life out of the 4400mAh with 30% screen brightness + wifi + surfing. That isn't bad, but I certainly am looking towards the purchase of the 5600mAh battery pack since it will give me at least a 33% longer run time, perhaps longer with the information that another user posted on power drain, etc...
I fly out tomorrow morning and will be gone for a week... I will probably have some more impressions after using this as the airport, plane and in the hotel. -
I will be testing this tomorrow.... I'll let you know if someone else does not chime in first...
-
5.5 hrs? is that on super mode with the overlock? or maximum power save?
-
That is set with the Office Quiet mode tailored by me. I found that 30% screen brightness was just right with this display (I think default for that profile was 50%), then I limited the CPU maximum speed to 50%, and kept min at 5%. It was overclocked, but with integrated GPU.
This seems about right though for battery life if you really think about it. Keep in mind that in real world testing, the UL80VT (very similar to this model) was rated for 12 hours, but ended up testing right around 8-9 hours for real world usage. Now, that is with the 5600mAh 84 watt hour battery. This little guy has a 63 watt hours battery... Quite a bit less... So it stands to reason that it will drop a good 33% or so in run time, which would put it right around a max of 6-7 hours.
Edit ** FWIW If I put it to 'power saver' mode and let it idle with 0% screen brightness, I would probably guess that 8 hours would be a reasonable guestimate. But lets be honest, no one uses a laptop like that. In super heavy use (gaming) I get 2 hours with the dedicated GPU, if I were to use integrated, I would get about 3 hours or so of solid gaming goodness in. If I decide to do office work and surfing the web, I am looking at 5-6 hours of use. -
honestly if i push a minimum of 6 hrs (with a little overclock) i would be happy. my netbook only does 5-6hr and the power on this system is slow since i bottleneck it all the time.
if i can squeeze 7-8hrs on no overclock and 20-30% brightness, i would be happy also. since i wouldn't need the system to run very fast when i'm browsing the web.
you should install batterybar to monitor your usage -
Fawk! Sold Out
should have order 1 hr ago

Can someone say how is the output through HDMI? Does the 210M handle HD output onto a monitor/TV easily? No stutterring @ 1920x1080 with HD mkv files ect.? I just want to make sure.
Thanks -
How have you guys found the trackpad? Do all the multi touch features work without any lag?
-
does anyone own a latitude e6400? im deciding on whether i should sell this and buy the ul30vt.... decisions decisions...
-
All of a sudden, my graphic boost button doesn't work anymore... ?
-
i wasnt a big fan of the 2 finger scrolling on my a2 but on the vt they changed it and its great. very smooth scrolling compared to the jumpiness on my ul30a2. could be overclocked processor? i dunno
-
you must have deleted the generic functions utility, you can download it again from the ul80vt page

Sold out, eh? I hate to say 'I told you so'! But seriously, it's only a matter of time before they're re-stocked. Maybe not before christmas, buy soon enough indeed.
}:^)~ -
that's one thing i hate about ASUS... they never make enough of anything
-
Capt'n Corrupt Notebook Evangelist
Yeah, I've heard that they stock way too low, which sucks if you're in the market. I'm still waiting for the units to arrive in Canada from non-amazon sellers, so I'll be waiting for a month or so.

HURRY! There's exactly 1 in stock!

why would i spend 999?
-
Capt'n Corrupt Notebook Evangelist
Because you really want one? haha

HDMI RUNS NICELY on the g210 card tezeted on a 32 ibch plasma tv
-
Thanks for that, as I was a little concerned about any potential jerky lag.
-
Thanks for the response. Good to hear.
I would like to know your results as well if you get around to it. Doesn't hurt to have more than one opinion. -
Ordered 1 last night before the sell out. Also got an Intel 80GB SSD from ebay for $250 - $50CB.
-
Earlier this morning before going to work, my graphics boost button wasn't working either. I brought my laptop to work, resumed from sleep, tried it and it worked just fine. The only difference is that I am now running on battery, which might have triggered the power4gear app and/or Windows 7 to actually do something with the graphics card. The results are inconsistent when switching back and forth and I'm still trying to find out why. I had the same issue over the weekend (a few pages back) and it's still occurring.
-
Just tested right now at the airport.... Crystal Clear.
I did it just for you....
Anyway, I teathered by smartphone to my system and then I decided to play some LOTRO.... all on battery power at the airport. This is quite litterally, awesome.
-
FWIW, I noticed that having certain programs running stop the video driver from switching over to nVidia or Intel... I had to shut down PDANet before it would switch the graphics over. It did notify me of this when I manually clicked on the GPU icon on the tray icon. Then I noticed there were a few of the apps that were blocking me from changing the GPU. Not sure if that is what you experienced or not, because the button or profile changes do not tell you that it can't. You have to click on the GPU icon and 'click for faster performance' in order for it tell you, or something like that.
-
got the intel but no notebook.
ii'm hitting my self so hard right now -
Bummer, I just got my first dent
It was bound to happen sooner or later... unfortunately, it happened on my third day of ownership.
I dropped an iPhone from my bed to the floor where the UL30VT was resting. Now there is a dimple that resembles vehicle hail damage.
I'll probably breakdown and buy a witty decal from Think Geek to hide the damage. But, it is rather disappointing that the ASUS exterior is so fragile. I've never had this type of issue with another laptop. -
Metal dents. Plastic flexes or just plain breaks. Who knew?
-
You dropped a device made of metal and glass from 3-4 feet up onto the closed lid of your laptop? I'd say you're lucky you just got a dent! Be more careful, dude. You sound like you handle electronics like my wife does.
-
Capt'n Corrupt Notebook Evangelist
Yeah, it's probably best to keep the laptop off of the floor... I've never had anything hit my laptop hard enough to cause damage to my lappie, because I keep it out of harms way.
This includes:
- not having cups full of liquid next to the laptop,
- keeping it off of the floor,
- not having it teetering on the edge of a raised surface,
- having some insulation and no sharp objects when in a bag,
- etc, etc, etc.
That way, you don't even have to think about being careful with your laptop. It's bound to remain beautiful and functional far longer.

Wow! Consider how popular this laptop is. This thread is nearly as full as the UL30 owners lounge despite being only 5 days old!
{8^O~ -
Mine should arrive to my friend in the US today, is there anything I should have him check? is there a setup process when you first start it?
He's not the most computer/tech savvy guy you'd meet but I guess I can tell him what to do... -

I just read the latest review on amazon. Is anyone else experiencing problems with the space bar not registering when pressed?
}:^)~ -
Yeah, I've been trying to determine if any apps break any functionality of the laptop itself. The only thing that I know for sure is that resuming from hibernation on the UL30VT ruins the screen brightness keys and restarting all of the hotkey applications doesn't resolve the issue.
I wonder if ul80vt or ul50vt owners have ran into an issue with the switchable graphics or not. Time to scope out that thread. -
On the right side? I have the same issue. I use my right thumb to press the space bar and it's pretty annoying when it doesn't catch my keystroke. I probably type 80wpm on average, 100+wpm if I'm rushing and it's been pretty annoying having this slow me down just because of the damn space bar
This is probably my biggest complaint since no software or driver update will ever fix this issue
-
I'm worried about this... my HP tx2000z (tablet) has this same issue. It's VERY annoying. It happens to be of similar size(12.1").
-
Thanks, that's good to hear.
-
Nope, my spacebar works fine. It might just be my mind playing tricks on me but I think the keyboard is getting less clackety and more smooth as it breaks in.
-
does anyone knows where to get this laptop besides amazon? and offer the same price as amazon
-
I think Amazon has exclusivity on the ul30vt-X1 ~ in the coming months other resellers will begin offering the A1 variant ~ probably at a higher price.
-
Amazon has this baby posted for $1000!!! what the heck...
I'm desperately waiting for this to show up on eBay. Can anyone sell me theirs on ebay?
We can negotiate the price. I'm decently reasonable
-
Available from a 3rd party seller. I'm guessing Amazon's stock ran out. Glad I got in on mine. Should be delivered today.
-
no problems on my spacebar :fingers crossed:
-
I was looking at this laptop all weekend on Amazon and decided to buy it yesterday night as a gift and Amazon no longer has it in stock!
Does anybody know if it will be back before christmas?
