Based on estimates, I should be getting about 2 to 2.5 hrs with light use and WiFi on.

As far as wear goes, I have 8%, but I noticed that whenever I discharge it too much, it tends to increase the wear on the battery. I suspect that the power curve they use to calculate the % remaining does not match the actual curve, which is why every time it goes below a certain point it increases the wear.

I would suggest the modular battery if you need extra battery life, since I don't think it is affected by the problems they've been having. I have not fully discharged my modular battery, but it has 50% the capacity of your main battery, so it'll probably give you another hour of runtime.

    Approximately 2.5hrs

I purchased my V1JP in Hong Kong on April 5th, 2007. I believe the battery itself is fine for all V1JP and does not lose its life so quickly. For the people who report the shortened battery life, this is an error with the 'remaining time' function. If you ignore the 'remaining time' and run your computer past 0% battery, you will find that your computer will last much longer and that your battery life is still in fact okay. This seems to be a bios issue. If the battery had some firmware issue, it would automatically cut off power at 0%... but this is not the case. Hopefully Asus will release some kind of fix soon.

Regarding the battery life, with the screen brightness set to 2/16 and Wifi On, doing light tasks like web browsing and typing document. Your average power consumption should be 25 watts, resulting in 3 hours of battery life.

The multi-bay battery should last roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes under the same conditions.

Regarding the battery wear issue, you will want to read this.

    Thanks for the feedback.

In Portugal the model available was the V1JP-AK045E, which included the modular battery. Unfortunately, I called today a local store and I was informed that the V1JP was discontinued. I checked with other two stores that the laptop was no longer available in the reseller.
So, anyone knows if a new V1 is coming very soon ?

I was also told by some merchants in Hong Kong that the V1 was discontinued... some said the V2 was the replacement, but I have a hard time believeing that as the V2 is a 14" widescreen and simply not as good as the V1JP, though a bit smaller and lighter.

Any idea how to set the power options: 'Critical battery action-->On battery' to 'Do Nothing' on Windows Vista???
I want to continue to run my computer on 0% until the battery actually runs out.

If you are browsing and watching movies, I recommend having a good display with high resolution such as the V1JP. The display on the V1JP is very beautiful and bright.
Regarding the fan, when you do light tasks such as browsing or watching a movie, it is quiet. The only time I can really hear the fan is when I am running an intense 3d game. In which case, I would be wearing my Shure e500 headphones anyways.

For GPU, I personally prefer nVIdia... but the ATI x1700 has worked fine on Vista ever since I installed the 7.4 drivers.

As for the battery issue, it seems to be more than a V1JP problem... the problem is present with other manufacturers as well. Just disabling the Critical battery alarm in windows will allow you to get the full use out of the battery. Unfortunately, the remaining time is not accurate, but the battery will work just fine.

For a portable, nice 15.4" notebook with 2gb DDR2 and decent GPU, I do think V1JP is a good choice. I just noticed another model by Asus... the Asus-Lamborghini VX2... I just found it on the website you posted. It uses nVidia Geforce Go 7700 VX and is faster, but a lot more expensive. I haven't seen any reviews on it... maybe worth checking out?

In windows, there is a 'critical battery alarm' setting for what the computer should do when the battery reaches a certain %. If, for example, the battery reports 5%, windows can sleep/hibernate/shut off automatically. The problem is that the reported battery life is not accurate. The computer might say there is 5minutes left when in fact there is 105 minutes left.

If you disable critical battery alarm, you will gain access to the full life of the battery. The computer will run until the battery runs out of energy (even though 0% is reported during that time).

There is a tool in the bios to recalibrate the battery 'remaining' function, but it does not work properly. Hopefully Asus will release some update that will allow us to properly recalibrate our batteries.

I notice a few things different:
V1JP-0041E has 160GB HD, AZERTY keyboard, LightScribe on DVD, Windows Vista Professional

As for the Santa Rosa, I needed a new notebook in April. This was the best one I could find to fit my needs (15.4" 1680x1050, reasonable weight, decent GPU) that was available for these few months.

To check battery wear you will need to use third party programs like NHC, RMClock, and or Everest.

Power4gear Extreme is the power management software which allows you to change power modes for your computer needs. For example if your going to use the battery, then you can set it into battery saving mode, but if your more performance you can switch it to quiet office mode.

Windows has its own power management system aswell, you can chose what system you want to manage, you can do so in your power management section.

    Hi,

I'm thinking about picking a V1Jp up but also have my eye on the LG S1. What are the differences? I'm finding it hard to get the specs for the LG S1, they seem to keep changing from review to review (possibly slightly different models?)

I know you guys might be bias due to the fact i'm in the V1Jp lounge but please try to be as impartial as possible. :D

So, which one do I go for... V1Jp or the LG S1???

Can't find the price for the LG S1 here in the uk, anyone know the price?

Yes, anyone who is experiencing this battery wear problem should get their batteries replaced. And if the new battery has the same problem, once again RMA it.

What BIOS are V1Jp Vista users using? I just got my lappy back from RMA and I now have 313. Isn't that the one that is underclocked. If so, which one isn't that works FLAWLESSLY (haha) with Vista and where can I get it. Thanks.

If aticonfig gives the right information, the 312 bios sets graphic card clock to 380MHz. The newer 313 one increases to 396MHz, no idea why they do that, it isnt too much difference between the original 400MHz.

I see. Thanks for the info. I have updated my BIOS to 313 from 309 and the boot up time from POST is significantly slower with 313, but after that when Vista Business is running, it seems to be fine again. I wonder what else did they do to the new update.

Remove the battery and then restart the notebook, and then place the battery back in. Then look if the charge is 100%, if not just restart the laptop again.

Sometimes this happens but the charge should be 100%.

You may have to repreat this a few times.

In the ASUS download site .. under BIOS .. there is an entry for ALL OS version and an WinXP version of the 313 BIOS. My question is, will the ALL OS version work with my XP Professional OS? ALL OS means XP included right? I haven't upgraded my V1Jp to Vista because i'm still waiting for the SP1.

The "All OS" part means they simply give you the BIN file and you have to either use the BIOS, WinFlash or DOS-based flasher (AFLASH? I can't remember) to update the BIOS...

    Hi all,
Just another update on the new BIOS 313 update.
After I updated my BIOS to 313 from 309, the battery life dropped from 3 hours to just little above 1 hour. I was wondering if there's anyone else updated their BIOS to 313 and is having the same problem?

I have a problem when i close the lid, the portable do nothing. (NO DETECTION)
(Windows settings are good (What action do when i close the lid ...)

I've just update bios (312->313) and reinstall my system (vista business).

However, i've tried to reinstall the system with the backup dvd and cd drivers (Asus) and the problem is already present.

Any idea? i think it's no software (the problem has 2 week and the problem appears just after my reinstall)

I bought my V1Jp last March, I haven't travelled with it yet and it just stay at my desk always plugged in. Once a month, I use the battery for awhile till 30% and then recharge it again to maintain the battery. Last week, I decided to install mobmeter to check my battery wear because I only get less than 2 hours for ordinary internet surfing. I noticed that everytime I use the battery and then recharge again, my battery wear increases by 5%. Right now, my battery wear is already 32% .. :( has anyone encountered the same problem? btw, I'm still using XP Pro.

Yumeno, welcome to the forums. Try this, uninstall the webcam, and remove the device. You can do this via device manager. Then reboot the notebook and let Windows detect it. Then you may or may need to install the drivers.

Yes, many are experiencing this problem, it is known as the battery wear issue. Have a look at this thread, there's a whole thread dedicated to it, actually several. Try the suggestion within this thread.

Thanks! MilestonePC.com I solved it yesterday. The camera can be use, but the image that the camera take its up side down. Then I try to figure it out. Finally I know what's the problem. Pls dun upgrade your Bios to 313, stay back to 312. Once u upgrade to 313, your camera image will be up side down and the fingerprint device cant detect your fingerprint. This thing happen in xp OS not sure vista got this problem or not. Cheers!

Is this the only solution for the battery wear problem? To get it replaced when it is unusuable already .. every charge and discharge i do, my battery wear increases by 5%. The solution won't be good anymore when the warranty expires :(

The "solution" is to never discharge it past 30%. Then, it won't wear down.

I know it's very restrictive (effectively cutting off 30% of the battery life) but it's the only thing that works, up until now.

You should at least consider this when your warranty runs out and you're at your last ASUS-supported battery.

Sigh... I wrote in several emails to ASUS support that it'd be much cheaper for them if they just fixed the problem, otherwise they'll replace thousands of batteries for the V1 and any other successor that suffers from the problem... I really don't know whether they come out cheaper like this...

Yeah... they are prone to do that as wear advances.

I've noticed the same behavior with my new V6J battery (as in 4months old) that I never discharged past 30%. Yesterday it jumped from around 30% to 8%.

So it seems that we have even less effective life out of the batteries than what the gauge reports...

There's no real solution to this...

    :(

DDR2 specification makes it backwards compatible (with any board supporting DDR2), so yes it will work.. but it will run at PC5300 speed.

    Hi,
I currently want to do a fresh install with vista business (i have a license and a vista cd), but i don't want install all Asus Application & Drivers. just the minimum.

I have installed VGA Driver, Wireless Driver and Application and Fingerprint driver and application directly on the Asus Website.

My last problem is: the wireless button don't work! "Unable to load Intel Muroc..."

So, do you have a solution? and what application / drivers, is necessary ? (on Asus Webiste) (what's ATK_MEDIA, ATK_GENERIC drivers?)

Thank you and sorry for my english :)

You need to use the ASUS WiFi driver and the ATK100 driver. The ASUS version has some sort of hook that lets the buttons (controlled by the ATK100 controller) to work. If you use the Intel drivers, you won't be able to control the radio on/off using the button.
