If it's a hardware switch, then I'm not sure it's possible to change its function.
If it is a hotkey instead of a hardware toggle, if e.g., its function is equivalent to Fn+F2, you could install Wireless Console. In notebooks with a single wireless toggle hotkey, Wireless Console helps cycling WLAN+BT: ON+ON, ON+OFF, OFF+ON, OFF+OFF.
-
The Fn+F2 combination has the problem that the Wireless console 2 (using mouse) does not : during toggling between the different combinations the hardware is disconnected/reconnected depending on the "intended" option to be chosen.
Other question: does anyone succeed to run Knoppix 5.3.1 on U6V? I cannot make the Realtech NIC driver to work. For Ubuntu, I believe it is better to wait for the end of October to get version 8.10. Mandriva 2009 would be a good candidate too. -
That is very awkward..... i seem to have run into the same problem. My card reader just stopped working all of a sudden as well and reinstalling the driver doesn't seem to work..... I guess figuring this issue will be my weekend project
-
@emporiumboutique
Problem under XP I assume? Yes, I run into this several times now, and now it only the chance (let's say about 33%) after a reboot that it reworks. It is erratic, and drives me crazy. I finally no longer trust this card reader. Fortunately I do not have big usage of it (no camera).
Please confirm that you have Storage Volume/Generic Volume under XP, this is different under Vista.
USB 2.0-CRW => USB Mass Storage Device under XP
USB 2.0-CRW => Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader under Vista -
Yes, I'm using XP Pro.
When I have the driver installed, I have nothing under Disk Drives in device manager.
When the driver is uninstalled, I get 'Generic-Multi-Card USB Device'. -
Finally since I can reproduce the problem easily with other laptops, using either eSATA or USB2.0 that I conclude that the problem is with the file system. A check disk show one error in the bitmap of the NTFS MFT. chkdsk /f then fixes the error, afterwards no more problem. It really weird that the Blue screen of death (0x0A irq_not_less_or_equal) is not at first sight related to the NTFS file system error. -
Is the U6E-X2 any good?
-
-
I'm not a gamer, what if I wanted to watch a DVD or listen to music?
-
I think the U6E is perfectly qualified for that.
-
What is it's battery life?
-
As for Ubuntu: you can download and boot the Intrepid (8,10) beta, it works great. I've tried the AMD64 edition and it ran pretty well.
The Realtek NIC uses the r8169 driver, try modprobing that if it's available. -
Hi all, I am new here.
I recently purchased my U6V and installed XP on it. I encountered a few problems and I've been reading through the threads here and solved most of them. However I still have a few problems which I could not find solution to. Hopefully someone will be able to give me the answers I'm looking for!
1. I tried to install v177.92 of geforce driver but the installer claim that I do not have compatible hardware(???). I also tried other 177.xx versions but all gave me the same error. The only driver I managed to get working was v1.74.31, and in device manager its showed as "NVIDIA NB9M-GS". Is this suppose to be right? Oh, and I also have the "black screen after stanby" error.
2. My bluetooth stack refuse to work. I have ATK0100 ACPI UTILITY installed under system devices, I also have wireless consle installed and turned on bluetooth, yet when I try to installthe Toshiba Bluetooth Stack it still cannot find my bluetooth device and ask me to plug it in. In device manager, there is a yellow exclamation mark beside BT-253. Also tried manually install the driver from specific location (the toshiba folder) but still could not find any compatible drivers.
3. Wireless doesnt work either. I installed the WLAN driver for U6Sg (WLAN_3945ABG_4965AGN_XP_071122), installed Intel Proset/Wireless, but it gave me an error "Apaptor problem - driver not installed". In device manager there is a exclamation mark beside "Network Controller". Tried manually locate the driver as well but doesnt seem to work.
4. The infamous card reader problem. It also appears as Generic Multi-Card Device, and in my computer it's called "Combo Socket" with a drive letter assigned to it.
Well that's all the problems I discovered so far. Any help will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance! -
1. Make sure you use the modded inf file when installing the driver
2. The bluetooth driver is a separate driver, different from the hotkey utility software. You should be able to use the bluetooth driver from your drivers disk.
3. Again, try install the driver from the disk
4. Check this link http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4033203#post4033203 -
1. Problem solved after installing driver with modded inf. Still have the black screen error but pressing Fn+F5 brought the screen back.
2. Bluetooth driver installed from the Vista driver CD, so BT-253 no longer has exclaimation mark. However, when I run Toshiba bluetooth stack, it still tries to install the driver and still couldn't locate the bluetooth device.
3. Tried to install driver from Vista driver CD but it couldn't locate it, so there's still an exclaimation mark beside the Network Controller. Any idea?
4. Followed the procedure, still not getting Realtek USD 2.0 Card Reader. Instead, got "Generic-milti-card USB device" in device manager. -
I don't suppose the mic jack can double as a second headphone jack?
-
So now that only leaves the card reader...>.< -
Hi guys,
I got fed up with Vista on my U6sg so i decided i'd install windows xp. The u6sg, being slight older than the u6v, has a full list of windows xp drivers on the asus support site!
So i booted up from windows xp cd, with sp3, but the setup doesn't recognise my harddrive? It can't see it at all. I thought sp2 onwards had some simple built in sata controllers at least?
Anyhow, my hd is a hitachi 160gig model, does anyone know what specific drivers i have to load with f6? On my driver cd i found some files under, "intel matrix storage manager." On the intel site it says these can be loaded during an xp installation for use with various SATA / raid arrays, but i'm not entirely sure it's exactley what i need!? I can't find anything relating particularly to hd's either on the asus support dl site.
Furthermore, once i have these drivers can i just put them on a usb key and install them off it when i press f6? I've seen that the bios recognises usb devices upon startup. This is just alot quicker then slipstreaming the drivers onto the cd etcc!
Thanks for any help! -
No built in SATA drivers for WinXP SP2. See nLite+slipstreaming, or put the SATA into Compatible mode from the bios.
-
Ok if i was to use nlite + slipstreaming, what exact drivers would i be slipstreaming onto it? It's xp + sp3 too btw.

Yes, you may need to enlarge the scroll area, sometimes they are not properly configured for the geometry of the specific touchpad on the computer (so that the zones are actually outside the real surface of the touchpad).
-
Thanks for the help E.B.E, i've now got windows xp running very nicely on my comp. I just set the drive to compatible mode! Xp runs so much quicker than vista!
I saw some bios updates for the u6sg on the asus support site, is it worthwhile updating the bios? -
Depends on the list of changes/improvements. See my BIOS guide for details.

Gents,
After a few months have decided to reinstall Vista instead of XP.
And it works fine, besides one anyoing detail:
- the speakers make a sound every 2 seconds, as if something wrong (the same sound if you push a wrong button). I can not find what it is or why he is doing that. If have currently swiched the sound of, because it is simply anoying me to the bone.
I am also looking for a spare charger, but I can not find anything on the web.
I looked at kensington, but the u6 is not supported (70w charger). Does anybody know if the u6s has the same plug as another model?
Thanks in any case!
Greetings -
It looks like he is finding a hardware device over and over again.
Because system management (where you can check if you have any hardware failures aka in Dutch: apparaatbeheer) is reloading also every 2 seconds. It doesn't show anything yellow!. -
-
-
I restarted it and the problem is gone. There was something wrong, but it dit not occur again. Thanks!
-
Anyone a answer concerning my question about a spare charger?
Does the kensington 70w function with the U6 (it does with other Asus, but the U6 is not mentioned) -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
As long as the tip fits into the socket, it should work to charge the battery. However, as the U6 ships with a 90w adapter standard the charge rate is likely to be slow, and your notebook may glitch if you push the gpu hard while on AC power since the adapter might be unable to supply the requisite power.
You can get an Asus 90W ps from BTOTech for $49. -
Has anyone tried to install the game resident evil 4 with patch 1.10 on the asus u6sg-a1?, if so, what's your graphic experience?, it looks a little slow in my u6, i used to have a hp with T2400 core duo, 2gb ram, ati x1300 (512mb dedicated) and it used to work very well
I bought this notebook thinking that the nvidia 9300m g should be better than ati x1300 (an older video chipset), what do you think about it guys? -
-
I'm considering purchasing the U6V (although I'm not excited about the comments I'm going to get at work with the *plush* leather). The only thing that is holding me back is the lack of a dock. I'm replacing a P1610 and love having a dock (in my office) as I will dock and undock a few times a day and connect to an external monitor, ethernet, and hard drive. My question is has anyone tried a third party dock with the U6V? I've been looking at the Targus ACP60US and Belkin High Speed Dock which connect via expresscard. From other forums I see that they are both plagued with issues but it sounds OS and laptop specific. Anyone have any experience with a U6 and dock that will work with video and ethernet?
-
Probably a (not properly installed) driver issue or a hardware issue, but so far so good.
The problem is as always with me: I try to solve this problem by doing 3-4 things at the same time. Afterwards it is then difficult to point out, what solved the problem exactly.
Thanks anyway! -
U6V: the SD card reader is an USB 2.0, but apparently it does not appear as bootable device in Boot selection popup (ESC key at boot time). Does anyone succeed to boot from the SD card?

My U6s has been terrific, until recently, when one problem has cropped up...
My wireless capability is turned off when I boot up, and the Fn-F2 button no longer turns it on. In fact, Fn-F2 doesn't even register anything now (while all the other Fn-F* buttons work still). Vista 32 bit.
I can manually turn on wireless through the network diagnosis tol, but it's a pain in the butt...
Any help how to reinstate this functionality (or why it might have died?).
Thanks,
Petrov. -
I have one problem that i need help with.
When i use my laptop I am having only one problem with it.
I have both Ubuntu and Windows Vista (what came with the computer) installed and use grubs bootloader to switch between the two.
However I have NEVER been able to put my computer to "sleep" it just crashes and i habe to restart the computer, it shows the sleep light, but does not come out of it.
Anyone have any idea why this might be doing that? -
-
-
Do you know how I can turn on wireless capability manually, without going through the "Diagnose network connection problem"? I thought it might be in the Device Manager, but I can't see anything in there about it.
Petrov. -
Thanks for taking the time to help me anyway, much appreciated. Hopefully if anyone else encounters this scenario they won't have to spend a long time researching the solution...

^^^ I was going to suggest reinstalling the WiFi driver but I see the solution was simpler than that.

Has anyone tried to add more than 4gb of ram? I know some Dell users had success with that: search forum with "How to upgrade your M1530 to 6GB of RAM" (can't post the link cause of stupid forum post count limitations..)
