There's quite a few 2.5" esata enclosures. Try Vantec's
http://www.vantecusa.com/product-storage.html#
The 2.5" enclosure is the NST-260SU-BK
or Thermaltake's

That Vantec looks perfect, I have the 250gb 2.5" WD on the way.
Id assume if you use USB 2.0 you need no external power, but that it comes with an ac adapter to use the esata. -
Vantec does not provide the AC adaptor. Get a OKGear. It's cheap and does not look as good as Vantec but atleast it has USB to power and USB to USB and eSATA cable.
However if you get hold of USB to 5V cable then Vantec is best choice. -
i just got my G1s today, and i want to know which programs are bloatware and should be removed. It looks beautiful, although setting up a wireless network with it might be a pain.
-
I have the Vantec with a Seagate 5400.3 160GB 2.5" drive. To use esata, just have to plug the esata cable in first, then plug in the usb cable for the enclosure to draw power from the laptop. No need at all for an ac adapter.
-
^ I plan to run upstairs and my wireless router/cpu and 360 are all wired downstairs. Why is wireless networking a pain?
-
i kept trying and vista would jsut bring me to a list of networks i did not know. I was trying to set it up on my desktop which is xp, i think i'm just anub. But what about the bloatware?
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloatware
So, "bloatware" on notebook fora differs from use in the developer community. In notebook fora, "bloatware" means silly apps the notebook manufacturer adds to the OS master distribution image that is then written to the HDDs and restore disks. -
Don't take this the wrong way, but I hope it's just user error because I really hope I dont need to run a cord up two sets of stairs and down a hall.
edit: let me know if you figure everything out? -
Well i love it, there are just a few things that i'm concerned/ in the dark about.
1. it gets hot. i was told the g1s didn't get too hot at all, and that i shouldn't even bother with a cooler. all i've been doing is putting music on it(about 50gb) and installing games and it's really hot. Is there some setting i should activate?
even the touch pad is really hot, is there something wrong?
2. which programs are bloatware, which ones can i remove? a list would be helpful.
3.what programs should i get put on my laptop, matinece, etc. i don't need firefox or apps like that.
thanks a lot. -
Picking up my G1S as well, can't wait to see what all the talk is about.
as per the post above.. I would like to know the answers to those as well. -
i'm not asking what bloatware is, i'm asking which particular things on the g1s are bloatware. i don't want to delate anyhintg that is vital.
-
Dont count on Turbo Memory giving you any real life results
Sony and HP have done their own internal tests and is now dropping any mention of it on their SantaRosa systems -
Has anyone overclocked their video card yet? If so, what do you recommend? I heard riva tuner is good, but how do I use it and what are the best ratios to do without putting the laptop in danger?
-
Yes, Riva Tuner is good. Haven't overclocked yet though, I need my laptop to last and it performs fine at stock.
As for the bloatware, there really isn't much on this laptop. I think some just don't like the software, but really it is better than Dell and HP. -
Pc Newbie question:
What exactly is overclock? Do I want to do it? How do I do it? Why is it done? Any cons? -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
overclock is taking the clock speeds (running speed) of your computer and raising it higher than default.
CPU speeds, Ram speeds, GPU (video card) speeds, ect.
Do you want to do it??? probably not, the gains are minimal usually unless you can acheive a considerable overclock wich is not normally possible on a notebook due to heat/power restrictions.
Why? Because people like to see what the max there machine is capable of
Cons? Yeah more heat, more energy use, possibly lower the life of your hardware, can cause unstablility.
I overclock my desktop, my cpu runs at 2.8ghz 24/7 vs the 2ghz stock but thats a big increase 800mhz makes a diffrence. I overclocked my video card aswell for benchmark's but found that in real life gains I was only getting maybe 2fps more in games for alot more heat and it wasnt worth it.
So I consider overclocking more of a benchmark thing, its not for an everyday user unless like my cpu its a big overclock and fully stable. -
Yes, heat is an issue. If you have dealt with the heat well you can squeeze more power out. Results may vary even with two cards of exact same model. One person claims they got an 8600M GT from 450 to 700 Mhz running stable, and that was with DDR2, so with DDR3 allowing better mem overclock, this card might be very nice in that aspect.
Cons is that your card is not likely to last as long and unstability as Vicious said. -

Undervolting may be a more practical tool for our friend:
That is the process of lowering the voltage intake of the processor (which can be done using simple yet quite powerful software) to decrease heat and battery consumption while maintaining close to the same performance. The cons to this are system stability can be fatal if you aren't careful/**** it up. -
Yeah I think leaving stock and buying the card you want is the best thing for a laptop. If your going to OC, get a desktop so you can put good cooling on it. Just my opinion.

My G1S will be here today! Yippee! Ordered from Gentechpc.com. Excellent experience using them. I ordered it on Friday, was confirmed Monday, and shipped Wednesday. I had ordered it with 2 day air, but Ken (the rep for gentech) took the initiative to downgrade it to ground (since it was being shipped from a location near me). He saved me a day or two, plus the extra shipping costs. Two thumbs up.
-
do you feel a lot of flex around the delete key?
-
I'll let you know when I get home tonight. I haven't unpacked it yet. That's one of my concerns as well.
-
Because Intel Robson does not compatible with G1S, the G1S use Asus's proprietary half-size card:
And G2S, F3SV uses Intel's Robson Card:
So becareful G1S owner, it'll only work with Asus ITM (card will be available by the end of June) which is smaller card then Intel Robson. -
I have experienced no flex in any areas of the keyboard. Seems very sturdy. Great laptop!
I do have a bright pixel (I've never seen one, but if it's a TINY bright spot, then it's one). It doesn't really bother me so I don't know if I should send it back to be repaired. Can these spread or cause more harm? Or is it just preference? -
I believe the warranty dictates a certain number for it too approve warranty. Check theyre site but i think theyre needs to be a couple or something.
-
I suppose I'll call for an exchange. With the price that comes with this laptop, I want no flex at all. Should I call Asus or from the place I purchased it (Newegg)?
-
Asus. But makesure its covered under warranty.
-
So let me get this straight. Whereas other machines get Robson on a mini PCIe card, G1S will *also* be able to get it *but* it will be on an Asus ITM card?
-
Is there any disadvantage to having the G1 configured with XP instead of Vista?
-

Ken you are 100% incorrect. i have an itm card sitting in a g1s NOW. it is 100% functioning and doing its job!. it is up on our website for a reason. -
Geared2play.com Company Representative
It will take both asus and intel. If i had to guess the one asus comes out with costs double and offers less ram. It takes an intel robson no problem with a bit of effort -
Hello all, i'm writing this from my G1s! Before you ask for details I can't tell you what is good vs bad as far as time as I've never setup a system before. Your right about bloatware though, lots of crap running in the task bar I need too iron out.
My question to you guys is did we ever find out a reason why some processors are rated at 4.4 such as mine? was it a driver outdated or what?
And to those who remember my plight, I did get the mouse and backpack, both seem to be of fair quality. -
You can also do a few things to see if it fixes the problem.
Try softly massaging the screen where the pixel is, sometimes it magically comes back to life.
There is a program that supposedly can fix such pixels(it was made for the PSP), try downloading it and running it for a while, there should be instructions there too. -
Use this:
http://www.widowpc.com/members/fix_dead_pixels.zip
Note that this will take a few hours. -
What is the chipset for the asus G1s? 965m?
-
My processor was actually rated at 4.4 when i first opened it out of the box. When i got a blue screen from installing alcohol 100% that looped upon restart, i used the recovery disk. After that, my processor score is now at 5.1.
My noteboook problem involves the keyboard's flex, not the screen. Sorry, I should have ended the quote where it was suppose to. -
Do you sell just the card, I can't seem to find it on your website.
-
My G1s got also a wei rating of 4.4. I know it's only a bug but it is annoying. How do you fix it?
-
I believe it is an option when you buy a new G1S.
-
I have read that if you install the latest Intel chipset .inf file, it fixes the problem. Try http://downloadcenter.intel.com/det...OSFullName=&lang=eng&iid=homepage+inf_utility
Ira -
Can someone please confirm for me what chipset the G1s comes with? I want to update my stuff but an unfamilar with this.
-
Alright thanks it fixed it !
-
Mine is stuck at 4.5
What's the exact steps to fix the wei bug? I downloaded that program in #291 and it installed fast, rebooted. Is there anything else that you do? -
Did you try re-calculating the score?
-
Yeah, I hit 'refresh' and it went through it. Was there anything more to do than to just run that INFINST_AUTOL.EXE file?
EDIT: I guess I did something right, just got a 5.1 CPU. Very weird! 4.7 RAM still.. I hope Asus releases a patch for 800mhz support sooner or later. -
Monty brings up a great point...does anyone know when, if ever, a patch for 800mhz will be released?
BTW, I plan to get a G1s within the month. Should I be waiting for anything new to come out, updates, hardware releases? -
is it cool to uninstall motorola sm56 speakerphone modem? and net4switch?
-
IIRC - The Santa Rosa spec officially *does not* support 800Mhz RAM
(I'm sure I've seen that on here in a number of threads)
