What ever became of the G2 they just gave up on it? I would love to see a G3
-
Personally i'm looking forward to getting a W90. I saw one at CES 2009 and it was "sexy".
-
Well I got my G2S back last week from Asus US West Coast service. They replaced the TIM and cleaned up the thermal assmbly to gain about a 5C degree drop, which was nice. Now, this week my graphics card has died. I get the vertical lines and such going on. Took some pictures of them in the BIOS, Windows, etc. and now it is going back. For reference. It took 9 business days to get the laptop back from the depot. I live in SoCal and it was shipped up north, so I was close. I will have another update in a week or so.
-
So I installed Windows 7 on my baby. ZOOM. No bloat, and when I install the touch-pad driver the eye doesn't light up. YAY!
-
I think you may be the first verified to install Win7 (native) on the G2S for this lounge. Did you install the 64bit version? If so, you may want to try the drivers suggested over the last 5 pages or so.
-
Motherboard replacements for the G2S-A1 in Canada will be arriving this week, possibly tomorrow or the day after. Spoke with David P and the head guy there.
-
Good news, hopefully US West has them in stock (or just received them). Another week or so of downtime. At least my old Acer, Palm TX, and EEE still work
-
i am having exactly the same problem as you MrSloppy, I have a G2S-A4 that is doing the same thing, exactly. My tech says it the graphics card but i have to buy a whole new motherboard to fix it. But where to find the motherboard..
I live in southern CA if anybody knows any contact info where i can acquire one i would really appreciate it. I miss my G2S -
If you have a G2S-A4 that machine should still be under the 2 year warranty
-
even if I upgraded the OS and Ram?
Actually not sure under my circumstance that the warranty applies. But i will check with my tech to be sure...
I still would like to know where i can get another mother board just in case -
They can be found here http://estore.asus.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=4563 but they are out of stock and almost 400 dollars. I would check on that warranty
As for me, Asus has had mine for 2 weeks yesterday waiting on a Mainboard from Taiwan. Sucks -
You should be covered by the two years warranty. I don't recall upgrading the RAM would void the warranty. If you have the same issue as me, they would know that it's the GPU that burnt out and the OS has nothing to do with it.
Get a RMA immediately and have it sent in ASAP. There is a LONG, freakingly LONG, list of people needing repairs on their G2S here in the Markham repair depot.
I feel bad for the people who have been waiting since January. They could've called customer support and gotten a G50 replacement. ASUS never told me that in the month I had dealt with them until 3 days ago when I called in the US customer service and a helpful lady named Terry Lanners assisted me and told me of this.
Of course my comp got repaired today so the ASUS folks at Markham repair depot gave me the run around again about getting the replacement. Ah well, as long as I have a working laptop now. -
So they do offer a replacement laptop if it is too long?. Well that is good news. I have asked here on the west coast about it and have been denied this and a paid repacmeent. I will call and bug
Thanks for the info.
-
ok then where can i find more information on this, the gpu problem and the replacement as well as how i get it sent in. I suppose in need the original box to do that...
that might not be good -
If you are experiencing temperatures under 100C, they will replace the thermal assembly. If you are getting temps above 100C they will replace the motherboard (gpu). You will need to send it in a fairly compact box. I used the internal box I recieved it in along with the foam sidings. Depending upon the boxes condition, they may replace it with their own on the return trip. For an RMA, they pay for the shipping. I have not heard of them replacing it with another model, but if they do, that would be sick. I have asked to get a motherboard upgrade to the SV or SG and paying the difference in cost, or the entire cost, with no luck.
-
Well, just got my laptop back. Seems the LCD was dead, not the graphics card. I did not have an external monitor to test, so I could not be conclusive at the time. Now, I run the usual benchmarks and I am about 5-10C lower across the board, including the GPU at 84C (max). I find this quite odd seeing this is the exact same disc image from when I got the laptop back the previous time. Asus updated the drivers and such about 3 weeks ago and did not mess with it this time around. I am going to run a couple more tests to see if it was reading the temps inaccurately.
-
Well as luck would have it my machine is indeed under warranty and it was sent in and i got it back less than a week later. Apparently there was a bad trace on the mother board which was repaired. I hope the problem with the motherboard/graphics card is not still a looming issue. In the meantime i am just glad to have my baby back
. My other laptop is a really nice one but i like this one much better.
btw how do i go about reading the temperatures in my computer? -
You can use Speed Fan, Everest, or HW Monitor.

i have gotten mobo replaced a few month back, by sending it to toronoto(i live in vancouver) and came back in like 3 days.
anyways, my warranty is going to be over soon, and with my motherboard being toasted before once, im worried that it will happen again after warranty is over.
the sounds of my old mobo is happening on the new mobo, such as constant fan running. random shut off.
Whats the best way to take advantage of warranty before it ends?
also i just installed win 7 RC 32bit, do i install drivers on the OEM driver discs? -
hello you guys! is this thread still alive? how are your Asus G2Ses?
-
Still kicking *knock on wood*. Had my 'screen' replaced as it was the 'issue' with my 'overheating gpu'...I am running the latest Nvida drivers with W7 on order. Once I get it, I will check out what drivers are going to work out for us and post up. How about yours?
-
Nvidia drivers run sweet with W7 on my G2S
-
My G2S is fine and still loving it.. No issues yet..
Guys, what are the upgrades you have done with your G2S (including accessories)? -
Well this is fair well to my G2S. I should be getting my replacement in 1 day. I really liked my laptop. Many hours of movies, C&C 3, WOW, BF2142, Bio Shock, and Far Cry. We even served down range together.
His screen died on me 19 Aug 2009. I sent him in the same day and waited for his motherboard to get fixed. Sixteen days later I recieve a email that goes like this:
" Hello,
We apologize for the delay in service and the inconvenience this may have cause you. Due to the non-availability of the replacement parts up to this time, we would like you to offer a comparable unit as a replacement. Please review the attached specification and confirm if you are willing to accept the replacement unit after further review.
Thank you for choosing ASUS products.
Best Regards,
ASUS Notebook Customer Support"
So I look at the computer offered up for replacing my beloved G2S. It has way lower resolution, No Bluetooth and no light scribe..... but everything else is up to date and better so..... this is good by Mr G2S-B1 you did me well. -
Does it make sense to upgrade to 4 gigs of ram on a Vista 32 that came with it? Also is there a visual tutorial on how to do ram upgrades on our laptop? Or the keyboard removal guide is enough ( both ram slots are under the keyboard) ?
Thanks! -
there is a reference to another ASUS laptop having the keyboard removed. it is in the middle of this page you can use it as a guide sorta. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=222652 -
Thanks! So I can just get a 2 gig stick and go to 3 gigs RAM without going under the keyboard?

Reinstalling everything again is such a pain
-
Siberianx...I hear you on reinstalling everything is pain in the behind. Please take a look at software called Acronis True Image. I have been using it for backups, reinstalling, ghosting and imaging. An awesome software and money worth spending.
My post to open keyboard should be adequate for replacing RAM. -
So...I bought my G2S in July 2007 and checked this forum regularly for about a year or so until now...
Within the last week my laptop has done the same thing that I have read about in the last few pages of this thread. I hit the power button, "explosion sound" happens, I can hear it get to my login screen, I even login sometimes for the fun of it...however during this whole process my screen is black. I called Asus and he told me to send it in...of course I'm about 4ish months passed the 2 yr warranty and so everything will be up to me.
Does anyone know 1. What repair they will likely do for this problem as well as how much it will cost? and 2. Considering that my warranty is expired does anyone have suggestions on how else to handle this problem (try a local repair shop, give up and buy a new laptop, etc.) It's really unfortunate that i spent approx $2300 dollars on this machine and it barely made it two years. -
I would suggest you try to make your case to ASUS service as follows (if there is still time, your post is rather old):
Since this is nVidia fault which is almost sure to happen on every GPU from the faulty line, and you were sold such a faulty GPU, you believe you are entitled to a repair under warranty even though the term has expired. Who knows, this may just work.
1. GPU if it is discrete, or together with motherboard if it's soldered on. Likely on the order of hundreds of dollars (1-2 for the GPU, 3-4 if together with mainboard, but this is just guesswork; you can also have a look at the eStore to find how much the GPU/mainboard costs)
2. You can consider giving it up and buying a new laptop, or (if available) buying the parts off ASUS eStore and replacing them yourself, at a lower cost since shipping and handling is not included. -
Mine JUST did that, John_son.
And let me tell you, my life is over...I had a flex cable problem originally; my screen would conk out and I'd shake it and it would be temporarily fixed. No biggie. But today, that just happened to me.
I thought the connection between the motherboard and screen had completely gone, since I had already been having problems with that, but remembering that this line of GPUs was faulty, it scares me that my GPU might have actually kicked the bucket.
And that evidence was backed up when I took it across the dorm hall to plug it into a friend's monitor, and it wasn't receiving any signal.
I'm done. It's over for me. And this was as I was just about to put reserve money down on the CODMW2 360 and get myself a $600 TV from BB.
Life is NOT working out as I planned. -
Replacing the motherboard is not too pricey, but I agree with EBE in the fact you might want to look at the next best thing. Last time I checked, the mobo was about $400 if my memory serves me correctly. On a positive note recovering your files from the hard drive will be easy, just snag a cheap 2.5" case and you are off. Best of luck to you and Kierkes.
On a side note, I just found that the Cable's to Go Svid (4 pin) + 3.5mm -> RCA will not work with the G2S (Vista). You must use the adapter that Asus sent with the laptop to get the video to output correctly. I believe the adapter has 8 or 9 pins. -
Thanks. I actually have most of this worked out. I'm getting a G51 from BB, better than the original stock G2S in every way except for the screen. And it has the spare bay for the hard drive, might not even have to grab an enclosure, although I might want to turn it into an external. Maybe. It'd be nice having the HD in the laptop since I already have nother external.
At any rate, since I'm getting the TV and putting money down on the 360 anyway (I found out I could) the screen won't be an issue. I'll hook up to the TV and I'll be fine.
Thanks though. -
I like to thank Raikay for the post: How to Open the Keyboard on ASUS G series on page 48. It really helped me a lot and now I have 4 gig Corsair ddr2 pc5300 in my 2 years old Asus G2S, I also upgraded my harddisc to 7200 rpm.

You are welcome. NP

In response to a PM sent to me by Dave:
These are the limits depending on what Vista version you are using. Yes, you read it right Vista is capable of 128+ GB. There are laptops today in the market with 8 to 12 GB RAM. I am not sure about the limits of Windows 7.
Yes you can use TWO 2GB(1st slot) * 2GB(2nd slot)
* Vista Basic: 8 GB
* Vista Home Premium: 16 GB
* Vista Business/Enterprise/Ultimate: 128+ GB
I am certain that G2S uses a 2.5 inch form factor on the hard disk. One of the best drives out there in 7200 RPM
500 GB Capacity is this >>>
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148374
Here is the review of this particular drive from those using Asus and Asus G2s laptops. Note that most G2S owners complain about drive failures in G2S cause of sheer size and heat. >>>

You can in general start looking up 7200 RPM and 2.5 inch form factor for laptops. These 2.5 inch should fit your G2S.
Changing Hard disk is fairly simple. You just have to unscrew few at the back of the laptop and you will have access to the hard disk bay.
I am mentioning the above hard disk from newegg as one of the best sellers for speed, price, cache buffer (16mb) and capacity. It might not be the best for G2S. If you choose you can drop capacity to 320 GB for lesser heat.
Someone else here can chip in with recommendations if they have upgraded their hard disk on G2S .

***Don't forget to remove your battery pack from the laptop prior to changing hard disk as an added precaution. -
Oh, and quick question on the HDD subject: Does the G2S have one HDD bay or two?
And much appreciated on your response mate, cheers! -
According to this dude on this page >>> http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3925332&highlight=Upgraded+to+8GB#post3925332 (POST # 599) it supports upto 8GB. But his signature says he is using W90Vp now. And same page Post #600 talks about upgraded hard disk. Please wait for someone else to reply to confirm the total quantity of RAM that a G2S can take. My understanding has been that the max it can take is 4GB.
You can see my surprised reply on page 62 here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4060083&highlight=ram#post4060083
G2S has only one hard disk bay. You cant do RAID if that's what you had planned for. -
Never try install 4GB stick on G2S but I did some research, according to Intel the PM965 only supports 4GB MAX:
http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/316273.pdf
But some people successfully installed 8GB RAM on their PM965 chipset laptops:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5058633
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/General-Discussion/8GB-RAM-Laptops/m-p/38412
http://blogs.technet.com/keithcombs...-lenovo-thinkpad-t61p-now-has-8gb-of-ram.aspx
Maybe Intel was talking about Max 4GB per slot, I think mkinasz did successfully installed 8GB on his G2S-A1 because the CPU on the screenshot is T7500. -
Sounds like it might be worth a try at the very least. I guess if I buy a 4gb stick and it doesn't work, I can always resell the stick on Ebay and not lose too much from what I bought it for.
Does anyone know, with the default 3gb RAM version, is the 1gb stick in the front or back slot? -
Mike -
-
I'd trade mine in on a G51j
-
Yeah, I'd love to hear from an actual G2S-A1 owner if the 8GB thing works
Nice to see you here, Ken, I also got my G2S-A1 from you guys.
