Well said. Man you are talking about the software support for a tiny little OLED. How about decent drivers for the display card? Just take a look at how many times they release the GPU drivers...

HI All. I'm a newbie and my roommate offered Asus G2S-A2 for $300 USD. It is a cool computer and I've seen him playing games on it. However, I do not play games much and I use computer mostly to watch movies and take notes in class. I need a laptop and most of the laptops on sales right now starts around 400 after tax. Is it a good buy?

I personally would avoid it if you intend to to any serious work simply due to the probability of failure that would leave you stranded without a portable computer.
It's battery is ancient now too, so unless you want to buy a new one... heh.

Sucks to say it but you are likely best off with something newer/more reliable.

Toy soldier....you should buy a netbook. Even Bestbuy has something for 300 or even 270 dollars. Samsung and quiet a few others have a 300 dollar range Netbooks will have all the bells and whistles u need for school work. Wifi/hard disk space/portability/LED display and stuff.

    Hello!

I think my computer suffered from the "Nvidia defect" with the dead gpu. But, I have one question. I have read that many people can hear the "splash" when tha asus-logo appears and even log into windows. Mine doesn't do anything of this. So, could it be a different problem than the gpu?

@flraer it would depend on if you have the ASUS POST sound enabled in the BIOS setup, if you did, you should still hear it even if your GPU is defective.

You should also notice your hard disk being accessed for a minute or two while windows starts up.

There are a lot of people at nvidia defect forums who can probably give you better advice than I can bout pursuing ASUS to try and get warranty service or a new machine.

I had forgot, it makes the post-sound and then the harddrive sounds for about 15 seconds, then everything except the fan becoms quiet.

Another question, if the lcd-inverter was broken, it should still boot up, right?

Yeah it will still boot with any kind of screen or GPU problem, as long as nothing is shorted.

Try it on an external display if you suspect an inverter or LCD problem. If you can shine a flashlight or point a light at the screen and see text, it's probably a dead inverter, or the backlight itself died.

No, it's completely dead. Nothing happens after the Post-sound and like 5-10 seconds of hdd activity. I have tried external monitor with no succes.

I think I will try the "oven-trick" tonight or tomorrow. I have nothing to lose.. hehe. One guestion though to you who have baked your G2S, wich side hade you pointing up? I'm afraid some components will fall of.

    Hello everyone,
As it is my first post on this forum, I would like to say "Hello" to all happy owners of G2S-A1. ;-)
Short introduction: I bought my ASUS i AUGUST 2007 in the USA. After 20 months mainboard died and I received free replacement. Since then it still works great with bottom "hatches" removed and with cooling pad NZXT. A month ago I replaced 2x1GB RAM NANYA modules with 2x2GB Kingston HyperX CL4 (huge difference in WIN 7 64bit and gaming performance).
Now, I would like to upgrade HDD in my G2S-A1. Does anyone tried Hybrid Seagate Momentus XT 500GB (or 320GB or 250GB) SATA/300 7200rpm 32MB 4GB SSD (ST95005620AS) installed in G2S-A1? Or, does any G2S-A1 work with HDD bigger than 240GB at all?
Official ASUS tech support answer to my question: "if G2S may work with 500GB HDD?", was that the laptop (its chipset) supports HDD up to 240 GB. However, they suggest unofficially, that there is high possibility that it will run with no problems at all, so the best idea would be to try this HDD before buying.. ;-)

(Now offtopic... Carefull..- newbie's stupid question for patient people: kill me, but how to create my signature here, as I can not find such option in my user pannel?.. :)

Hi and thanks for Your reply.
I was considering buying some WD Black, but these hybrid SATA/SSD Seagates somehow knocked me down with "written" performance..And yes, it is 9,5mm..
But whatever I would buy, my concern was/is if chipset/mainboard is going to "cooperate" with HDD bigger than 240GB so I am desperately looking for someone who uses any 240+ GB disc in G2S-A1..

I'm surprised anyone told you 240 gb was all it supported. I have a 500 wd black
in mine (well my sons now) works fine NO issues, I would bet that a 1 terrabyte
    would also be no problem

As far as I am aware the current 1TB 2.5" drives might still be a bit too thick(but I cannot remember what our computers can properly take.) I may be wrong though. And that is likely to change soon enough anyway. :)
However, I would prefer to err on the side of caution since in my case I would like to use the drive in another computer upon the likely failure of my G2S... *shrug*

Here is a review for the 750GB Scorpio Black, they have results from a previous review of the Seagate Momentus XT in there too.
Western Digital Scorpio Black 750GB 2.5" Hard Drive Review

Honestly, whatever of the two drives you go with, you are probably really well off. They both look like they are quite nice.

thank You all for the answers. I will probably take WD black as I am receiving it for testing before purchase :)
"240GB thing" was official response of ASUS tech support.
    best regards.

    Hi again,
my G2S works great with WD black 500GB. The change, in comparison with my old seagate 7200.2, is noticeable when you copy files, in games and overall computer's flexibility.. ;-) WIN 7 performance index increased by 0,7 point.

Does anyone have any information on where to get parts for this system?

I just got mine back from a week+ RMA (the Nvidia Issue - again) and when I got it back - the screen sometimes has a green line down the middle!... on top of that one of the rubber feet is missing and another was off in the box, which falls off (they should have seen this in the QA before shipping IMHO), and the top case, LCD cover and palm cover are marred/scratched up! ...sigh.

I got a survey that I filled out and I am trying to call the tech people on this - they never sent me an email or anything as stated - and I had on out of warranty repairs ontop of the Nvidia issue I wanted to pay to have fixed... it was both in a note in the PC/box and In the RMA instructions - so I have no idea how they missed this.

Does anyone else have issues with language and directions when talking with the reps in "English" - it seemed I could get the guy(s) to understand a single word of it...

At this point I am looking at another 50.00 shipping charge and a weeks+ out of service again just to get what they damaged when I got it shipped out the first time the MB/GPU burned up - seems that I always have to do this 2x with Asus - just to get a Laptop back that looks like Dell does the first time... really lacking in Support, I see it as really ASUS' only fatal flaw.

Hope that in the near term I can move to a G73 and that things are better with that system.

    Hello Everyone!

First of all, I'm very sorry my english is not very well...
Anyway, I bought Asus G2S-A1 laptop in 2007. And it was dead on 2010( black screen on boot ) But I used it with an external monitor for a little time... And then my laptop has been passed away, just like your laptops...

6 months ago, I sent my asusg2s-a1 laptop to a computer reparing service ( because asus warranty has been finished ) And they fixed my computer for ~70$. I asked them; how you did it? They said; we made "re-balling" process to your graphic card's chipset.

3 months later, I had the same error again. Maybe the source of that problem was; overheating-dust problem... I don't know. That time, I sent my laptop to Asus Service in Istanbul/Turkey. They said; we have to change lcd and motherboard completely... we can repair your laptop's problem for 1700TL, it's equal=~ 1100$
I explained that series of asus laptop's have same problem, this is a nvidia faulty graphic cards error; So, I don't want to spend more money to you!!! send my laptop back... And they sent it...

Last time, I sent it to another computer service, now they are reparing it for 160$. They said; [ this is motherboard error; some kind of "short circuit" error; We are trying to fix it... ] And now, I didn't receive my laptop back yet...

I wrote these informations for you guys; Who wants to awake their frankenstein laptop: Asus G2S-A1 :D

Anyway; so, if my last step failed. What can I do with that laptop? Is asus care their customers? My laptop's warrenty has been dead, but may I change it with any other asus laptops for free?( because it's faulty u know ) ??? Or are there any idea, how can I repair that laptop? What can I do? :( any suggestions?

    Thanks for reading my post*
    Best Regards,
    Gollum

    That would be my guess.

I've owned mine since 2006 or 2007 (and I'm typing on it now) and the only real issue I've ever had with it is how hot the thing gets... more so now than ever.
But I really demand a lot out this Asus, leave it run rendering video day after day... way more work than it was intended for.
Anyway, I've had the black screen issue... but its been due to heat.

Best you discover for yourself what is going on before going to a computer tech for help... you can't always trust their response.

    *edit*
I've just been skimming back through this big thread, seems my Asus has been better to me than I gave it credit for... but more importantly, if you look back in the thread you will find a lot of info about the problems people have had and how they fixed it. I still love my G2S... but its just not enough machine for my portable needs.
I'm looking at how I'm going to refurbish it now for use as a stay at home extra pc now. I'm not abandoning it.

Firstly, sorry for bumping an old thread. I've finally gotten off my lazy and got some thermal past for my vid chip that died early August of this year (the week before going on vacation and trying to burn new driving music >.<) Bought the laptop new back in Sept '07 so I doubt there will be much leeway there.

While I wait for an answer from Asus (read as sitting on my drafting an email), does anyone have any pics/directions for a teardown? I know there's one for the g1s, are they much different?

I just did a repaste yesterday using the G1S Disassembly Guide and yes, it's a bit different, that's why I'm posting today, to ask if someone found a disassembly guide for G2S as I want to check some screws. I wonder if Asus would provide me one if I ask them, what do you guys think?

    Thanks in advance!

For those who baked their motherboard, how long has you laptop been running well since the bake? Mine has been 6 months now with no problems.

Has anyone installed a solid state drive in the G2S? If so, how did it perform?
