I've tried HWMonitor, temps reported are the same.

No wonder the previous fan died, and this wouldn't last too long either if the paste/heatsink was screwed originally just as it is now. Although, they apparently did it right for the GPU this time...

Still have a month warranty (3 if I take the last RMA into account), I'll send it back.

What would be the normal temperatures while running a cpu+gpu heavy application?

Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

I don't know for this notebook, but I would classify up to 80 degrees CPU and up to 90 degrees GPU "normal" while under heavy load; wouldn't hurt if they were lower, but they can be expected in a notebook at least in one with a powerful GPU.

Up to 90 degrees CPU and 100 GPU is still bearable but cutting it rather close.

So what did you end up doing? If you still plan to send it in make sure to mention that they should pay extra care to the paste and heatsink (for instance if the heatsink is warped and they just put it back, that's going to be no good).

I asked for another RMA, describing everything in detail.

    Just got it back with
    Problem symptom: Fan error
    Service Reason/Action: Applied Thermal Compound

    :)

Now startup temps are 44-45 for cpu, starting fallout3 it went up to 58-65 but even that was in a lot more gradual then before, when it was jumping around! Couldn't test too much because I am at work, but still, I'm very happy customer right now :D

    Thanks for your help!

Just a quick heads up, normal temps are 50-60 for everyday operation now, 70-80 under heavy load. The fan doesn't even start unless I do some CPU heavy tasks.

So clearly there was a problem with the thermal paste or the heatsink.

    Hi everyone,

    I need help!

After 2 RMAs due to sound issues and 1 RMA due to cpu overheating, my V1S was doing ok...until tonight.
Now, the screen remains dark while and after what seems to be a booting sequence. As far as I can tell it seems to boot because the leds of the HD display a booting behavior and the shortcut button of the laptop and of the keyboard (+fn keys) all work after the system seems to be up.

To troubleshoot/fk with it, here is what I tried:
-I removed the battery and power plug, press the reset button with a paper clip.
-I hooked it up on my TV (using S-video or HDMI connector), played with the switch screen button, nothing came up on the TV.
-I removed each individual components of the laptop, one at a time and tried to reboot (HDD, graphic card, and 1 ram memory at a time).
Nothing helped and the screen remained dark while and after what seems to be a booting sequence.
Ha yes, and of course the warranty expired early last september.

Does anyone have something to try with this before I turn postal?

    Help!

Heh, the exact same thing is happening to me, with the exception that it doesn't happen 100% of the time. I suspect the completely wasted battery, because with repeated forced shutdowns/restarts the screen simply comes to life after a short time, sometimes as soon as the 2nd try, sometimes on the 6th. Also the small yellow battery icon is usually alight when this happens even though my laptop is plugged in. I'll try getting a new battery and let you know what happens. It might not be soon enough for you though.

Edit: I've also had a few RMAs recently due to overheating so my very first suspect was that somehow they fiddled with the GPU/graphic card when they applied the new thermal pads and that might be the cause of this because it looks like as if the whole graphic subsystem didn't start properly. But once it's started OK then there is no problem until the next shutdown/hibernate.

Another small thing that points towards the battery: In BIOS there is an Enable/Disable setting to control whether to dim the screen when the battery is low. I've disabled it, and this thing got less frequent, i.e. the laptop screen comes to life like every 2nd restart, instead of every 5th or so.

    Thanks zkecskem,
The laptop is definitely booted because it is visible on the network but the screen remains dark like unplugged...
I have a spare battery , I'm going to try that now.
Do you know of a way to install/self deploy VNC to remotely access to the laptop to run tests?

I repetitively booted and force shut down in the middle of it.
I also tried my spare battery. Notghing helped so far. Along these lines I need to try my spare power supply at work.

If it was a graphic card problem I feel that trying to boot without it would have solved the problem. And it didn't.
I think that something must be fried on the MB.

Do you think that there is anyway to claim anything from Asus in spite of the fact that the warranty expired about 3 month ago?? With my three previous three RMAs I thought that having bought this nearly 2000$ laptop was a big mistake but now I really feel raped.

PS: a lot of people here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5525030#post5525030 and there http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=407457 have a similar problem with their G1S

I'm not sure how removing the graphic card would solve your screen problem, in my experience most computers wouldn't even start without one.

Yes, I'm not completely sure about booting a laptop after removing the graphic card either. I've tried that and it did not solve the problem anyway. I know that a laptop can boot with no graphic card driver installed and that a desktop can boot very well if the card if removed.
Ha also, i forgot to say that this problem (screen remaining dark while and after booting) occurred after a simple reboot without even moving the laptop from the table where it was set.

I'm very welcome to any suggestions.

I'm starting to look for a new laptop...HPs Envys seem nice

My V1S screen remains dark all along and after the booting process, it remains dark even through the bios/asus welcome screen. It's like the screen is disconnected. This problem occured after a simple reboot and teh laptop haven't been moved at all. After the system is booted I can see it on the local network. Plugged-in TV remains dark too while connected through HDMI or S-video. This highend-nearly-2000$-Asus-laptop got 3 RMAs in its 2 years life and the warranty expired just 2 month ago...

What should I do? Trash it?

PS: people here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5525074#post5525074 and there http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=434906 seem to have the same symptoms that is due to a faulty graphic card.

I got Asus on the phone, they issued me a RMA (the fourth one for this 2 years old V1S). I'm suppose to pay for shipping and repair since my laptop is out of warranty for only 2 month.

I'm very tempted to buy a new laptop and give up on that 2000$ Asus crap that will break down in few month from now, if it follows the same trend than in the past.

    Any advice is welcome.

Any recommendations for buying an additional power adaptor for the V1S? I need a second and was wondering:

    1) Should I buy an exact duplicate of the one that came with my laptop (ADP-90SB) or are there newer compatible models that are better?

    2) Where's the best place to buy one of these?

    Thanks in advance

    Hello again,

i'm willing to try upgrading my t7700 with a t9500. if i believe what asus claims there's support after the new cpu support in bios 300 and even better in bios 301. the bios 301 is referred as Sn301 even if you download it from the asus v1s download page.
i did a bios update from 209 to 301 exactly the same way as i had done in the past when switching to 209 using winflash. the update process succeeds but as soon as the laptop is restared the bios revision remains 209.
does anyone know what happens? there's is a change in the bios since asus logo appered at startup although i had disabled it in the past. but why does it seem to be stuck in 209 version?

    Hi guys,

Power adaptors are probably available at the asus e-store http://estore.asus.com/shop/

Considering my very bad experience with my Asus V1S, i wouldn't recommend geeking to much with that junk. i would save my money and directly buy a brand new computer with the wanted hardware.

Follow up of my Asus V1S-B1 nightmare:

To make it short: My V1S got 3 RMA's over the past two years for different serious problems. My warranty expired 2 month ago and the gpu (NV 8600M GT) fried after a simple reboot. Altogether, this high-end asus junk broke down on me 4 times with an average of once every 6 month...
-In a legitimate postal rage, I fought over the phone with 4 people of the Asus customer service. It took me most of a morning, persistence and energy to fight my case and to release my hate.
-Results: Customer service finally understood my case (it was not easy but thanks to them anyway) and they got me free shipping for servicing and free replacement of the 8600M. After all, customer service is not responsible for the bad design of Asus products.
The laptop came back. The gpu is still quite hot (68C while surfing) making the fan always running. Anyway, according to my previous experience, this 4th fix will probably last only few month.
As a good consumer, I'm considering now the Lenovo T500. One of the well tested, coldest and quietest 15'' business laptop of these days market.

can the gpu of v1s be changed from nvidia 8600gt to nvidia 9500 ?

was reading in one of the posts that 8600gt has temperature issues and 9500 has cooler temperatures...

as of now, i do not see any noticeable problems with my v1s...

    cheers

My GPU gave up too, and I'm suspecting the faulty design by NVidia, coupled by a rather intensive use, with the final straw being the act of unplugging the HDMI cable while the laptop was still powered on (TV was off though).

Note, that I had the same problem as Herv, but not 100% of the time, but like on every other power on, as if the GPU failed to boot up, randomly. Also, there was a strange grainy effect on my vga out sometimes, where I had a Samsung T260 HD monitor connected. The monitor doesn't produce the same effect with my other laptop, so I suspect the GPU again. The HDMI output was used to watch movies on a Sony Bravia a few times before the GPU decided it won't start ever again.

Since then I've tried removing the graphic card and cleaning the socket, applying light push on the chips and on the board in case it's a contact problem, heating up the GPU before restart, and everything I could find on the internet regarding similar problems, but to no avail :(

Warranty has expired some time earlier so as a last resort I've ordered a "brand new" 8600M from ebay, will see how that works out... :/

It's a shame this laptop suffers so much from this GPU, otherwise I had no problems with it, actually it still boots up even with the GPU removed, just like Herv's was.

In case anyone has experience replacing the 8600M with a more powerful GPU, please share the info!

So far I have found these links to be of interest, although they are not V1s specific:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5674753
    http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/index.html
    http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/C90s.html

This review reports 9700M as MXM II in an ASUS G50: http://techreport.com/articles.x/15731/2

Also, I've found this on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Asus-M50-M50V-9...temQQimsxZ20091208?IMSfp=TL091208192004r10192

It would be nice to replace the rather old and dodgy 8600M (one of the first mobile GPUs with all the drawbacks this implies) with a much more refined 9700M, although even that has overheating problems from what I hear. Any ATI MXM II cards to recommend? :)

    I was right!
Sure enough, it's been 3 month since my last RMA and now it is time for a 5th RMA:

My asus V1S has now no sound...Again!
It is an issue that I experienced twice in the passed and that motivated two RMAs for this lapop. To fix this issue Asus replaced the motherboard of this damned laptop...
I documented this issue here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=181515 and http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=215427&page=3
Someone fixed this problem by downgrading the BIOS (ver. 301 to 208). This fix that never worked for me: http://btoforums.com/showthread.php?t=1241

This would be the 5th RMA for this laptop that I unassumingly own for about 2 years and half. And I'm not sure if I'm going to fight again for a free repair of this piece of crap that will break again within the next few month.

What is sure is that I WILL NEVER BUY AN ASUS LAPTOP AGAIN!

    edit:
I would recommend people looking at a brand new Asus laptop to have a look first at:

Just wanted to check in here. I got my asus V1s when they first came out in 2007.

I've HATED this computer for 3 years, but you know what? It still mostly works.
The speakers stopped working soon after I got it. The right side get really hot. The trackpad is the biggest piece of sh*t this side of HP. The casing material is cheap-o plastic that creaks and bends. The hinges sometimes pop out. Update: A piece of the cover just broke off. No biggie. A bit of tape and there we go.

But it still works, even games well, and I've never replaced any part of it. I've even spilled a considerable amount of cola and water on it.
All for only $1800 in 2007 dollars.

My supposed placement, the envy 14 for $1100, was RMAed immediately because I couldn't deal with its minor problems.
Considering how long my v1s has lasted and what other people have been through with this and other laptops, I have no idea if I should love or despise this thing!

Is there anyone else out there who still uses their speakerless v1s?

Yep, I'm still using mine as well.
My speakers are working fine, but this computer does have it's share of other problems.
I also got an HP to replace my V1S, and like you, I returned it right away. If anything, the horrors of HP support made me appreciate how well Asus has handled my RMA and other questions throughout the past 3 years.

Do you have something else in mind to replace the HP envy you sent back? I'm going for the U33JC.

Guess our similar experiences have led us to the same... laptop.
It's looking like the U33 or U35 for me too.
I'm also debating if I should import the acer 3820tg. It's the same weight but has a radeon 5650.
Similar laptops are those expensive lenovos without discrete graphics and the wicked expensive Sony vaio Z.

My only concern with the Asus and acers is the screen quality. I would really like a nice screen, but it seems only macbooks and otherwise crappy HPs have them.

Hi guys, checking back in here!

Still using my old v1s, been upgrading battery, ram and hdd the past couple of years. All in all, im pretty pleased with my product, aslong as i clean dust every couple of months or so.

Lately i've experienced slow/lag in certain games and applications I had no problems running before. Running a 3dmark 06 to benchmark this old dog reveals a poor score of ~2500 which is pretty bad, seeing other laptops with 8600m GT scores way better, with weaker CPU and RAM.

I read many people have problems with the GPU and I think it's finally affecting me aswell, seeing how low my core&memory clock
    170@100mhz
    Result

Downloaded the latest nvidia program to check the clockspeed and being able to clock it UP to factory speed, 3dmark06 shuts down during the first test. I think the GPU is checking out.

Is there ANYTHING I can do? Except gluing up the GPU with thermal paste. I'd like to know if anyone have successfully changed the 8600m GT with a newer GFX.

    GPU-Z
    Appreciate answers :)

EDIT: figured my PCI-E was just running at 1x out of 16x. After a disassembly of hardware and reput it in i got a total of 8x PCI-E lanes working, resulting in a better performance in 3dmark06.
    Result 2

Now, to identify WHY it resets back to 1x PCI lane every time I reboot, and why I can't get it to normal speed @ 16x

Sold mine middle of 2010 in 100% working condition, owned it for around 3 years and only had to have the graphics card replaced when it burnt out just inside the 2 year guarantee. Asus RMA procedure was smooth and no problem. The only annoying issue with the laptop in the time that I owned it was getting it to fully shut down on its own sometimes, the workaround was the press the bluetooth hotkey on and off and then it would turn off.

    Hey there,

I gave up on my v1s. I had frequent problems with the GPU even after replacing it several times. It would turn off my laptop or lock it up even when trying to play fairly old, not exactly GPU intensive games. The temperatures were not even that high. Also the fan got too loud and there is some problem with the heat sensors meaning that if I turn it off I have to wait a certain time to be able to turn it back on which makes to the whole locking up business a lot more annoying.

It's still good for browsing or doing cpu intensive stuff but now it just sits there while I'm having a blast on my alienware m11x.
