My work allows me to buy a new notebook and the possible budget is $2000.0. The work place already has two Linux work stations with 19LCD. I will wait for merom cpu because I need 64bit for computational works.
Help me figure out the speficication for this notebook.
CPU: Merom 2.00G ( when is it available? )
mem: 2G
hd: 100G (5400 or 7200 ? )
dvd: 8 x DVD-RW Dual Layer Super Multi or
8 x DVDRW Dual Layer Slot-Load ?
wireless: IntelĀ® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
case: ?
Additional batter (9 cell) and AC adapter
Warranty: ?
Port Replicator ( for external lcd ): ?
anything else?
Thanks

hd: get a 7200! a 5400 doesn't make much sense with a **** fast CPU as the Merom! (also the Merom is available already, but won't be built into noteebook-packages until late August)
dvd: get the dual layer burner.. will burn 8gig rather than 4gig dvds
warranty: depends on what you want.. I'd recommend the 2-3yr dell at-home/office service
ram: make sure to get real good ram.. it shouldn't be a bottlenecked 533Mhz ram! -
Merom is out, but not sure when resellers will begin putting them into ASUS BOA models, prob once ASUS releases the BIOS.
HD, prob 7200 rpm, although if you don't need fast access times, it wouldn't be much different from a 5400.
DVD, IMO get the super multi (slot load will be useless if you have one of those small pocket sized CD's) .. but up to you..
Warranty: depends what kinda warranty your reseller offers since I believe BOA models have warranty from reseller, not directly from ASUS.
Don't need a port replicator since you have a VGA port built into the Z96J.
Oh and about the RAM, if you can get 667 MHz with a lower CAS than currently available (5) then do it, but if not.. 533 with CAS 4 would do the same on average...
$2000 for z96j?
