Hey guys, I'm wondering if it's possible to use another connector to boot Windows from? Maybe like an SSD on a mini pci-e port or something?

I want to use my 2 SATA ports for storage harddrives only...

You do have the eSATA port on the side.......!

There is a hidden mini pci-e slot on the G50 for the tv tuner thats not there. Never used one but i guess its possible for it to show on the boot device list. In addition to this its possible to get express card SSD's that have as much of a chance of being bootable under normal circumstances. You can forgoe the dvd drive and use a bracket to hold a drive in that bay and it will show up on the boot order list.

Is there such bracket for these models? Would it give me SATA 2 speeds?

I'd prefer to use the mini pcie than the express slot if possible, because the express card SSD would end up jutting out from the side.

And IMO it's always safer to have the OS drive installed internally.

In any case, does anyone know if these models boot from mini pcie and/or express card at all?

I seriously doubt you'll find room in a laptop case to add a pci-e card, even if you have an empty slot. That item is really made for desktops if I'm not mistaken.

With a notebook computer, you need to start by identifying where there is still room for another device to be plugged in, then find a suitable drive. --That's why people are talking about removing the DVD drive to accommodate another HD.

Granted, you do bring up a good point about the physical space limitation. I never checked whether that hidden mpcie slot is a half slot or full slot.

That, and there's also the question of whether G50/G51's BIOS has a blacklist or whitelist on what mpcie devices can be used. Anyone know how to look in the BIOS for these things?

If any of you attempt to do this, please post shots on how it looks on the laptop.

I'm really interested in having an ssd on my laptop to boot windows 7.

    On my G50VT-X1

Well I'm looking into purchasing a optical drive harddrive bay caddy soon, but I'm having trouble finding Canadian sellers.
