Hi! I just bought a UX32VD.
Basically I just wanted to install my windows ultimate on the computer, but I got an error while trying to do so. I googled around and after trying all and everything i ended up on this guide, but im getting the same error here as well.
Its on step 9, after cliking on the "Install now" i get the error that makes it unpossible to finish it. The error I get is "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now."
I've tried everyting
- Tried loading drivers from asus webpage when i get this message (tried different drivers because the error itself is not logical on a computer without CD/DVD..)
- Tried different iso-s, also the one linked here.
- Tried to use a SD-card, but it dont seems that the computer can boot from the SD-slot..(?)
- All the time i've used WINDOWS 7 USB DVD Download tool that makes a NTFS-usb, but also tried to make a bootable usb manually with diskpart and make it with FAT32.
- Tried both IDE and ahci in bios.
- Tried all the top google-hits, but no one works for me.
Anybody got a solution for me?
It would be really nice to finish this guide, because how the computer is with factory-setting/windows is really not that great. I rather use my old UL30 thats much quicker as of now...

Have you tried to enable the legacy USB mode in the BIOS? If it is a USB3 stick it's possible that it requires the right BIOS settings to work properly. Also, the USB can be booted in the regular way, or with UEFI (hold down ESC to get to the boot menu) - have you tried both of them?
Otherwise, make sure the USB has the Windows 7 install properly arranged. Try following a couple different methods of getting the install files on the USB. I also think I've gotten the same error message when the ISO containing the install files was bad, and that was with a DVD drive so that kind of error message seems to appear regardless if you're using USB or DVD. Good luck. -
It didnt come up as an option when the usb was in NTFS, but when i made one in FAT32 the UEFI-boot choice came up, and it worked. Dont know if that was random, but if someone gets the same issue, its worth trying

32GB is small for system disk, but there is a way to increase it virtually.
can use mklink /J command line to attach some folders from HDD to SSD.
for example:
mklink /J C:\Temp D:\Temp
this will map folder Temp from disk D: to disk C:
Every program writting to C:\Temp will actually write to D:\Temp
Can map some system folders not relative to system performance. -
I got the UX32VD a few days ago, beautiful piece, but wasn't performing nearly as well as what I was expecting. Still loved the screen though! Then I found this thread, decided to go with it. Oh. My. God! Bootup times went down to about a fifth of the factory install. Now I have a dual drive setup, with a lightning fast system drive, and some decent storage, all on such a sleek piece of equipment. Never been happier with a computer purchase. Thank you dunces!
edit: Oh, and I only registered, to tell you this! -
btw, after checking out Acronis and CloneZilla, I've decided to part with 19 USD and bought Paragon Migrate - and I am very much satisfied to use this solution, works properly out of the box.
-
Another thing that I noticed is that after installing a fresh copy of Windows on iSSD and installing all drivers mentioned, the WiFi light (on F2 button) did not light up on OS startup if WiFi is enabled. So I made a research and also installed WiFi Console3 utility from drivers section on asus site what resolved my problem. So, maybe someone may find my solution useful -
When I get my crucial m4 512GB ssd in I will do some testing and see if the faster speed of the crucial drive makes a noticeable difference compared to installing on the issd. I'd like to keep it installed on the issd but if the crucial offers a performance boost i can feel I'll have to move it on the crucial

Hi, I wanted to thank everyone involved with this guide, and also ask if anyone had any problems with usb drivers after the windows install? I used a usb 3.0 memory stick with a modified boot.wim file with the usb 3.0 drivers added as per a guide I saw somewhere in here, think it was in the main thread.
The windows install itself went great, but after logging into windows when I got to the part where I had the asus drivers on a separate usb 2 stick windows wouldn't identify any usb device at all. I had to boot up windows from the mechanical drive (which I didn't format) and transfer the files to the hard drive in order to install the drivers.
I'm guessing the usb 3 driver mod must have been the culprit? Either way, a heads up to people, if you want to be on the safe side then save the asus drivers to the empty data partition on the mechanical drive and wait with a format of that drive in case the usb won't work after windows install. -
Can you designate the ssd with the os as other than the c drive and still make it go there to boot? That way the 500GB drive can be the c drive and then all new programs will just load to the c drive (the large data drive).

Having installed a 256gb ssd (samsung 830) and partitioned it in equal size for program and data.
My question is, what can I do with the 32gb issd besides from another storage solution?
Is there a way to make use of it to avoid loading on my 256gb sdd by using issd as caching? -
Hello, the 3DMark2011 screenshot of the first page shows nearly 4000 points in physics. Why do I only get 1100 points with my UX32VD? Is there any driver I have missed? The newest version of nvidia physix is installed and 3dMark ist running on the NVDIA GPU. The only difference is that i have the core i5 edition.
p.s. Do I need to run 3d applications with the power cord connected? -
hi guys,
first thanks a lot for the guide. I struggled a bit with installing windows from a bootable USB but indeed the USB gets detected at first boot but then not when the windows install starts so you need to reinstall the USB port drivers...
Quick question - I installed Win7 SP1 yesterday night, part of the windows update. And this morning when I tried to boot, the 32gb SSD disappeared from my BIOS boot menu, so it seems I can only boot from the Hitachi drive. Bad news is that I already got rid of factory installed windows on that drive.
Any trick to have the SSD show up again in the BIOS boot sequence? maybe flash the bios? I had no time to tinker with it yet this morning before leaving to work, but if anyone has a suggestion...
Thanks! -
Hi everyone. I have big problem that is getting on my nerves.
Ive followed this guide on how to install windows 7 on issd disk on my ux32vd.
Ive done exactly as it says. Ive download a brand new copy of windows 7 premium and tryed installing them with both winsetupusb and microsoft usb tool.
Well the first time i tryed i download the wrong file, i took the x86 home premium and well i got so far that i came to the installation when it suddenly ask for drivers. "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now." I tryed everything and i have followed many guides, but nothing worked, but as i said i found out that ive download the x86 version.
So well know ive download the right version and when i try to boot from my usb now i says:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. Fit the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your laungage settings, and then click next.
3. Click "Repair your computer"
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
File: \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe
Status: 0xc0000001
Info: The selected entry could not be loaded becuse the application is missing or corrupt.
And ive really tryed everything, ive tryied repair, ive tryed disable/enable boot options in bios, ive updated bios, but nothing seems to help.
So i really need your help now cause im about to throw out the computer trough my window... -
Hey ts85, I hope you haven't thrown it out the window just yet.
Windows install can sometimes be a mess and can cause loads of different kinds of errors. I feel for ya, I've had my share of that too. It's strange that it won't even load the installation files.
The safest bet is always to use an external DVD-drive, since Windows can have a hard time with some USB-stick configurations in laptops. For me it worked flawlessly right away using a simple external DVD-reader/burner.
Try to boot from both UEFI and non-UEFI, someone else had a problem related to that. Also double check that you have correctly deployed the Windows install to your USB-stick.
The "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now." message is a common Windows 7 installation problem. It seems like nikopoussmouss solved that by installing USB port drivers during installation, it would be great if he could share how he solved that so it will help other with the same issue.
Also nikopoussmouss, is the iSSD listed when you check which SATA devices your zenbook has in the bios? If nothing else works, I'd use parted magic to secure erase the iSSD (as explained in the guide - note that you need at least the 6_19 version), it should make it appear so you can re-install Windows on it.
Keep trying, I hope it works out for both of you. -
thx dunces. go figure after a couple of reboot the ssd reappeared on its own... go figure
this morning the issd was not listed at all, just had the hitachi.
need to back up stuff now in case it rehappens someday! -
Ive tryed to boot from uefi non uefi, but the funny thing is the uefi only shows when u have formated youre usb to fat32 and copied all of the installationsfiles to the usb. Cause the microsoft usb installation program makes the usb ntfs and well with ntfs the uefi option is no more, why is that?
Well that aint a problem anymore, its was just when i tryed installing x86, cause as i said i download the wrong backup first, so first off all i need to find a solution for this. -
-
Might this be the problem? Ive downloaded the home premium x64 english, but on my factory settings i have the home premium x64 swedish edition??
Cause you cant choose the swedish language for home premium x64 on the link on this forum? Why? How am i supposed to get the swedish home premium x64 then? -
ts85: First thing I would try is to use some form of partition manager boot stick to reformat the ssd. Then you should be able to reinstall, remember to boot from usb and not the ssd. I used a fat32 formatted stick for my install. You should be able to select Swedish during the install if you want it.
I would like to know how everyone did with usb drivers because I didn't have any drivers after install. -
I've done some checking and it seems you should be able to plug in a second usb stick containing the Intel Chipset drivers during install and use the Add driver option and browse to the dir containing the drivers.
Example guide here: Windows 7 clean install
*EDIT* I just tried it and it seems to work, click Install Driver, Browse, then browse to the WIN7 dir of the Intel Chipset drivers that are unzipped on a second USB stick. Also, do not use UEFI, it doesn't boot from the USB stick for some reason when I do that, it automatically boots from the ssd. Just hold the ESC button and then select the regular boot USB stick option. -
So that wont work.
Hmm, maybe i didnt format and make the volume to partition cause i just deleted the volume and then let it be.
Is this the cause?
And one more thing , when i deleted the two volumes of the ssd i couldnt not convert the disk to mbr that way.
I had to use diskpart and do it this way, but still its just a volume not a partition, can this maybe be my problem? That i have to make it a partition before? Format it and stuff? -
When it first loads up you can only select English, but I'm pretty sure you can select Swedish at a later stage of the install, otherwise a language pack might be an option.
-
Now i have download the professional x64 and use the eicg remover and if this doesnt work then i have acctually tried everything, ive used diffrents usb stick aswell now and that didnt work either.
So this is my final hope. -
YESSSS!!!!!!!! IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!
Now windows 7 is installing the windows 7 professional x64. But how do i make it home premium now? Ive used the eicg remover..but i could not choose between..it just installed.
?? So how will i make the key on my sticker work know? -
It should be in the sources folder of your Windows 7 USB drive. -
once i used the eicfgremover tool it said that it have been removed..well it didnt work? So what am i supposed to do here :S ?
Edit: I did it again!!! Damn im loving this friday! I went in and deleted the ei.cfg file my self. And know i got the choice of what windows i would like to install. -
What is the problem when a new computer doesnt recharge the battery?
It says 97 % connected but not charging? Why isnt it charging upp to 100 %? -
-
And big thanks to a perfect guide. -
ts85: What did you do about the USB drivers? Did you do what I suggested a few posts up or did it just work after install anyway?
-
-
Awsome guide, big thanks!
-
Hello to all of you! I am totally new to this forum but i sense i can find some answers here!
I bought the ux32vd two days ago and tried to install a clean copy of windows 7 following this guide but i have the same problem mentioned in this thread - device driver missing! I use an external dvd player. I have tried to install usb 3 drivers during the installation process but i only get a message that no new devices are detected or sth like that. I used the usb 3 driver from asus site of course. I have tried everything and i am really discouraged!
How have you lost this problem? (to people that have encountered the same issue). I ' m just really sad...
I have exactly the same problem when trying with a bootable usb flash. I use an msdn windows 7 x64 copy that works great in other computers!
Thanks in advance! -
I see several people have truble installing win7. I downloaded an english home premium version from first post (did not want the swedish version that came preinstalled).
What i did was to download the "USB3_Intel_Win7_64_Z104225.zip" from asus webpage and extract it to the root of hitachi hdd.
When installing from usb to the issd it asked for 2 drivers.
When asked for first driver i navigated to my not yet formated hdd D:\USB3_Intel_Win7_64_Z104225\Drivers\Win7\x64 It then found "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver" something.
Then after few seconds same popup came again so hit refresh button and it will find new driver that "generic usb hub" something (don't remember extact name but it's the second in list) but after that one was installed too it all worked great installing from a regular 4gb usb.
I first formated the hdd when all drivers i downloaded before and saved there was installed and everything worked smooth. -
Thanks for the reply!
Unfortunately i have tried the above steps you describe with no success...
I extracted the driver to the hard drive, but when i chose it to install during the windows installation process i got a message "no new device is detected", as i wrote in my first post. The installation program promped me to search for another driver after that and nothing else happened. I used both an external dvdr-drive and a kingston 16gb bootable usb 2.0 flash drive. Same result...
Any ideas? Am i missing sth? -
-
Hey, I've got a huge problem. I've followed the guide and the Installation of Windows 7 on the SSD went just fine. But now I'am getting iregualar bluescreens. The error says "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR". Does someone got the same problem? How can I fix it?
-
The larger programs I installed on the HDD, but it is actually quite slow, because it stops spinning after about a second, and whenever it needs to load something, it needs to spin up, so the program is running with quite a lag. Might that be caused by CrystalDisk? What could I do to solve this? Tried fiddling around with it, but with no success.
-
If not check the hard drive with windows.
Explorer / select C drive, right click, properties, tools, error checking, check now, start, schedule disk check. Then restart your computer for the disk checking to start. -
Dimsweden: Try installing the intel chipset drivers as per my suggestion on the previous page.
-
I will monitor it today for a last time because maybe I had bad settings with the virtual memory. -
This is what I did to make EFI USB install stick:
To get EFI boot working:
format USB stick as FAT32. Copy Windows install onto it from ISO/DVD.
on USB install disk: copy \efi\microsoft\boot to one level up to \efi\boot
Rename \efi\boot\cdboot.efi to \efi\boot\bootx64.efi
To slipstream USB3 drivers:
find a file \sources\boot.wim on usb. Copy it to local HD (for example, into c:\bootwim). Open cmd.exe (run as administrator)
Code:cd \bootwim mkdir mount dism /mount-wim /wimfile:boot.wim /index:2 /mountdir:mount dism /image:mount /add-driver /driver:C:\eSupport\eDriver\Software\USB\Intel\USB3.0\Win7_32_Win7_64_1.0.4.225\Drivers\Win7\x64\iusb3hub.inf dism /image:mount /add-driver /driver:C:\eSupport\eDriver\Software\USB\Intel\USB3.0\Win7_32_Win7_64_1.0.4.225\Drivers\Win7\x64\iusb3xhc.inf dism /unmount-wim /mountdir:mount /commit
Now when you reboot you should see option to boot from USB stick in EFI mode. Once you boot in EFI mode you will be able to install Windows on GPT drive. This works for x64 windows only since UEFI is not supported on 32-bit. -
The Hitachi HDD is not the fastest drive around, that's for sure. It's also annoying that they've coded the disk so it has a very strange energy saving behavior of spinning down all the time. But the spin downs are fixable as I explained in the guide. Have you followed the steps with CrystalDiskMark to disable the APM feature of the Hitachi HDD? That will make the disk function normally, and adhere to the Power Settings set disk sleep timer.
I've noticed that CrystalDiskMark is not always starting at the startup and log on, and to fix that you need to create a Windows task that will make sure that it starts on both boot and log in. After I did this it worked flawlessly. To do this, please follow this guide: Task - Create to Run a Program at Startup and Log On - Windows 7 Forums
Pitha1337, that bluescreen seems really odd. I ran my UX32VD with Win7 on the iSSD for at least 50 hours in a week doing all kinds of testing with it and it was completely stable. No one else seem to have reported it either. Unfortunately I then had to return my VD due to the screen being rotated several degrees inside of the bezel.. Asus really needs do better quality checksI recommend to test rising the page file size if you got the standard 4gb ram config. Otherwise get a bsod checker program and search the net for possible answers.
There are some inconveniences when doing the iSSD Win7 install, but they can be avoided and solved. When all is up and properly running it's an awesome machine. -
Hi,
Ive made a fresh install on a new ssd drive and followed this very helpful guide for which drivers to install. This guide also gave me the idea to turn off hibernate but now one very annoying thing happens each time I return it from sleep. The fans go crazy, like a vaccuum cleaner and then they slooooowly calm down. Any ideas on how I can fix this? Same thing happens with asus instant-on. -
Also is it possible to just buy some sort of sata-usb adapter and connect my naked hitachi hdd to a routers usb-port for network storage?
-
-
Smultron: The fan thing seems to be a bug with the Intel thermal policy drivers, as several have reported earlier. Try rebooting which should fix the problem.
-
thank you Pettza78, hope it will be fixed
-
Short report: yesterday evening I worked nearly 3 hours without any bluescreens. I ran a lot of stress tests (BurnInTest) and checked RAM, HDD and CPU. Everything ist fine. I think I had bad virtual memory settings. Now it's 512-1024 like in the guide with 4GB DDR 3. I hope the blue screen is gone
