I did a quick search and nothing turned up, so I thought I'd create a thread here. My new Asus N61JQ's network card does not connect to any networks. I've tried it at home, at work, and at school. Plugging in a network cable gets Windows to say it's "identifying" for a minute or so and then it claims there is no connection. Any ideas?

Interesting. The stock wireless card is supposed to not work with 5.0GHz wireless networks. For all of those to be 5.0GHz is some luck you've got there.

But no connection when plugged in is not a good sign. Sounds like an RMA and warranty case with Asus is in hand.

Have you tried reinstalling the network driver?

I updated it, I did not reinstall. Should I uninstall it first?

And my wireless card works fine, along with the bluetooth and the Sprint wireless broadband if that matters.

shoot...I read more carefully. I thought you said your wireless wasn't working. My bad.

Hmm...wired network not working is interesting because I've had two desktop Asus mobos that have had their on-board LANs stop working. To this day I'm still trying to figure out what happened to it.

But you should definitely try reinstall the drivers for it, uninstalling the old ones first.

Does this happen to you after you put/wake the computer from sleep/hibernation? I've run into that issue before and solved it by updating various drivers, messing with some setting (allow this device to wake computer seems familiar) and simply not using the sleep function :/

If that isn't it, is your comp holding on to a certain ip addy or being forced to try and get one from a bad dns? That might happen if something went wrong in windows setup.

Can you physically connect to another computer or a router and test the connection to rule out hardware failure?

No luck. In fact, uninstalling requires a reboot, but when Windows boots and I log in, it's already reinstalled the driver. Same issue still regardless.

Edit: I've tired directly connecting to the cable modem here or other connections behind routers at work and school. No luck either way. And it happens regardless of hibernation.

hmmm...looks like i'm gonna be butting heads with Win7 over drivers when I get my laptop.

Have you tried installing it over the old version? Any luck with that?

I installed it over the old driver first.

It's always best to uninstall the current driver first and restart your system before installing the new one. Also, doing this all in safe mode is also recommended.

The problem with that is it detects the network card on reboot and reinstalls the driver on its own.

Do you have a copy of linux you can boot from? If not google knoppix and download it.

When running under knoppix you can then check if the network card is working at all... hook up to a router and watch the activity light. If it works under knoppix then it's a software/windows failure, and if it doesn't work it is a bad card and you should start the RMA process. Turn the wireless off while in knoppix just to be sure that you are/not getting a connection from the rj45.

Windows says I've sent and received packets. However, I barely receive any packets. It's like I'm connected to my wireless router but the 'net connection itself is down.
