Hi ! I registered here only to ask one small question. :p I'm from Quebec, thus my native language is French; so excuse any mistakes.

Directly to the right of the power on/off switch of my N50VN laptop, there is a button that launches ExpressGate when the computer is off and Windows Media Centre (is it center or centre ??) when the computer is on. The problem is I won't be using none of these applications because I use my laptop mostly for working.

I could just go in Control Panel --> Programs and uninstall both programs, but what would happen if I pressed the button again afterwards (both with the computer on and off) ? I'm afraid that if I delete these programs, the button will become "dead" and have no use.

So my real question is : can I program another use to the "ExpressGate" button once I have deleted the programs that it runs ? Like, turning on or off the LCD screen, or logging off. That'd be sweet.

Thank you very much in advance for answering ! Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. :)

It'd just say operating sytem not found I think, or express gate can't be loaded. I forget which. But it just requires you to power off and start up again with the power button. The expressgate button will still turn the computer on, there is unfortunately no way to disable it. Also, I'm not aware of any replacement for ExpressGate, or any way to link it to another OS. And I don't know of any way to remap the Expressgate button in Windows to make it a hotkey for something else.

Media Center or Media Centre, on the other hand.. that is more of a subjective question ;) But Microsoft calls it Media Center.

I think the ExpressGate button is coded into the BIOS...or it might even be lower-level than that since it is always running if there is any power source.

Centre is the Canadian spelling. Then again, it is also centre in French.

I guess "Centre" was okay since I'm Canadian... But anyways, that's not so important xD

So that means there's no way (for a non-expert user like me) to give another use to the button... And it'll open up some error message. Hmm. I think I'll delete the programs anyway because they take up quite a lot of space and I don't like having useless stuff on my hard drive (even though it's 320GB !).

My main question is answered, but what is your opinion about deleting the programs ? Should I ?
    Thanks !

Try out ExpressGate, it's kind of useful sometimes. If you don't like it delete it. I use it on the notebook I travel with because it takes so little time to start and is useful for a few basic things.

    Check this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=150016&page=11

There is a utility called Asus NB Keys which can reprogram any of the Function or TouchSensitive or other buttons, to be used for any other keyboard shortcuts. I don't have Expressgate installed, so i use the button to Hibernate instead of Media Center. Hope it helps.

No. That's not going to work for the special function buttons. Already tried it. At least on my G50V. Maybe by some freakish twist it will work for the special functions on the N50 but I doubt it. It only remaps key combinations not special function buttons.

What classifies as a special function button? Did you try the updated versions.
I remapped all my touch sensitive buttons to other things in Windows on my N50vn. The fast forward keys are useless to me in default state as they only work in Media Center. Using NBKeys they now work in VLC and SMPlayer because i changed them...

It obviously won't help outside of windows.

The four buttons next to the power button, it's different on the N50, I know... but I don't think you can map the expressgate button since it's not got a regular scancode... at least it itsn't for my G50, other models might have a regular key instead of these button things.

I just tried on my N50vn and the express gate keys is "Event" 0x95" and thus can be remapped in Windows for whatever key you like. Sorry i cannot help on the G50vt, but can confirm it will work for the op on his N50vn.

Good deal, guess us G50 owners are out of luck in that regard. Good news for the OP though. Thanks for the help :)

Whoah ! I was out for the weekend and I realize my little thread has grown to two pages ^^

So, if I understand well, I can "remap" my hotkey.
    Neat.
    ...But how ?

I looked over the Internet and it seems very complicated... so I'd need someone to put me on the right track. I haven't seen anything on the "Control Panel - Keyboard" window that could have been useful.

    Thanks a lot !

    Bump.
How to remap a hotkey, anyone ? :)

If I get no reply I'll look it out myself. And probably fail to find a solution. Well, it'll just become a "DO NOT PRESS" button, I guess.
