    Hi folks,

I just successfully installed Windows XP on my G50V A1 after much fighting with Vista, but I have encountered a problem. There is a constant pop up message telling me 'Power Surge on Hub Port: A USB device has exceeded the power limits of it's hub port.'

This does not go away even when I don't have anything plugged into the USB slots. When I look at USB Root Hub, it shows up as the last device, saying 'Unknown USB Device'.

I thought I installed all the drivers I needed to, but is it possible I missed one? Is there any way of figuring out just what is causing this error? A quick Google search even suggested that perhaps one of my USB ports has a bent pin and is now completely broken, but this is a brand new Laptop, so I'm hoping it is a driver issue.

Can anyone help me with this? I don't quite know where to go from here.

    Uh... update.

It went away. I didn't do anything but the error is gone now. Not a clue what happened...

u are, but you need to relax, many people here either have school / work during the day, so are unable to check the forums untill later

Wait patiently for someone to respond...

As for your issue, i using vista and havent come accross it, but ive seen some members with xp talking about it also...

My advice: wait for someone to post here, or use the search function to find those posts referring to that prob.

Except that no one is posting here, and I did a forum search and saw nothing about it. So I'll pathetically bump my own thread again and wait yet another week to get no answer.

    here:

    http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7813_102-0.html?forumID=67&threadID=52185&messageID=622109

    and here:

    http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/463952-solved-power-surge-hub-port.html

apparently it happens only with windows xp, either link tells you how to disable those messages. It also appears that no hardware damage is being done, so I wouldnt worry (but then again i just skimmed the articles, you may want to thoroughly read through it)

srry about my typing.... I'm using my desktop... Im so used to my g50-a1 keyboard now that typing on a full keyboard is a drag >.>

I too saw the second one, and he basically says that it DOES equate to hardware damage. That's the problem. Every answer I get conflicts all the others, and if no one else with an Asus has seen it before, I'm in trouble. My USB ports work, but this could mean something is wrong with my motherboard or worse.

I need someone who knows how to at least diagnose the problem. I'll give what information I can. When I click on the USB error, it shows me a list of my USB ports. Four of them are unused, one is a 'Human Interface Device', and the very last one on the list has a yellow ! next to it,, as if it doesn't know what it is.

Does anyone with an A1 have access to the list of 'USB' ports? If I can find out what it is, I can find a driver for it and fix this...

Does your WebCam work properly? I believe those use an "internal USB" connection.

I'm not quite sure how it should be working. I swear I installed the drivers on the driver CD like suggested in another thread, but I have no real 'application' to run it. It exists in my 'My Computer', and I can see it working, but I don't seem to have direct access to it. However, if I remember correctly, in the device mannager it tells me the drivers are up to date and there are no problems with it...

Since I don't seem to be getting any new answers, can someone at least link me to the webcam drivers/software for XP? I would really appreciate it.

A long shot: it seems people on that thread have been solving some CPU-eating bugs (hardware or firmware) by disabling a USB controller. Maybe that controller, or the devices controlled by it, are faulty, and the same solution or a similar one will work in your case?

You could use ASUS LifeFrame to check the webcam in XP.

Hey everyone, I'm having problems with that stupid message as well. It happens each time I plug in my USB from my external hard drive to my Dell laptop. I went to the Microsoft website where it offered some solution about disabling a certain port. I did everything it said, and now nothing happens at all. No message, but still no access to my external hard drive. A lot of posts consist of users w/windows Vista, and I have XP so I don't know if those replies/solutions are relevant. I REALLY need access to that external hard drive! The last time I was able to use it successfully was around Christmas...I received a digital picture frame and some of the pics I put on there came from my external hard drive. But I have no idea how that could negatively affect everything...please help! I'm really getting p-d off!!
