So I just picked it up, love how it looks.

First time I go to boot it up, it hangs at a black screen for over 10 minutes. I press down the power button and reboot.

Then it finally loads up, it's all good.

Now sometimes at the BIOS loading screen, when you boot up, I get the explosion to go off twice, it's weird, but that's not even the big issue.

Now when ever I shut it down, it doesn't shut down. It turns off everything, and the screen, but all the lights are still on on it, and I have to force the power button off just to use it again.

Is that normal? Or do I have a problem? Other owners of the G71GX, I need some tips.

(Also, a side question: does the hard drive seem to always be in use doing things, ticking and clicking a bit? I didn't notice it so much yesterday, but now I do. No antivirus or anything yet, so I dunno what it's doing so much of)

Return it, at least let the geeks see how it boots. They will be able to tell.

That doesn't sound right, I've never had the explosion thing go off more than once.

If it doesn't shut down right that's a pretty big issue, I wonder what's wrong. Could be vista or something. I'd take it back and get one that doesn't have this problem.

Just idling here using Firefox I do notice that the HDD is active sometimes, and I have no idea either what it's doing. But it's not as active as my old laptop was with Vista, it had indexing on and stuff so the HDD was pretty much always being accessed.

For the double-POST sound problem: try resetting the BIOS to USER defaults (not manufacturer!) twice, saving and rebooting after each setting.

For the failed shutdown, it may be due to a faulty Vista installation. Vista may have been doing (or hung during) some preconfiguring steps when you shutdown the notebook for the first time. You could try restoring the Windows installation from the recovery partition or from the recovery DVD.

Ok, so one last question. On a phone so I'll make it quick.

When I make windows shut off, EVERYTHING on the computer should turn off, right? All exept for the blue glowing express gate icon, correct?

I think that is correct, indeed.

    Sigh...

Well, I did several fresh installs, from the CDs and the recovery partition, no luck.

Going to try and install windows 7, and if that doesn't work, back to Best Buy. Such bad luck.

It might be that when they originally installed windows and created the recovery disks it had this problem, so when you re-install Vista using the recovery disks/partition you just keep copying the problem back onto it.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised. But you can confirm, right? When I choose shut down, everything and all the lights actually shut down?

I'm trying to make sure it isn't some extra shutdown function Asus added before I go and return this perfect copy.

When you shut down only the lightning bolt icon stays lit, that's the Express Gate button that lights up whenever the lid is open.

It only shuts off when the lid is completely closed, I had it just barely opened and I could see the button on.

Well, first I wanted to thank everyone for all the help.

I guess it was a hardware flaw after all, returned it to Best Buy and got a new one (no stuck or dead pixels, hurray!), and it turns off just fine.

I had just about lost hope in Asus/this model, I'm glad I got one that's good now, and I hope it'll stay that way.

    Thanks again, all.
