Ok, so I opened my G51VX up to change the RAM + put in the SSD when I noticed this:

It is a completely air tight rubberish sticker?
Surely the mesh is there on the underside to allow the fan on the heatsink to suck air in?
There is no way air can get through that sticker, it completely seals it.
Pretty well stuck on aswell, I guess I should rip it off to allow air to go through the mesh?

Wrong and no...
Sorry, but this has been asked and addressed many times over. -
Ah right
,
Thanks for the reply, was pretty puzzled for a minute. -
And tell me why not? Seems like it would work just fine..
-
in short.. if you use a cooler it maybe be better to take it off, otherwise, keep it like that =P
-
O for sure it would work with a cooler. You might be able to fab up a custom fansetup if you removed the mesh....
-
I removed the sticker slightly before replacing it to find there is no mesh.
Its just solid plastic all the way through, so the circular mesh on the underside is just for asthetics.
Maybe they'll utilise it as a grille on another model, who knows. -
IIRC, in short the ASUS engineers found that having the large round vent open created a problem with proper air flow when the fan was running so no cooling was taking place.
I guess instead of just redesigning the bottom it was cheaper/easier to just mold and install a cover plate to prevent the problem. -

Try it then. -
Thats like getting a 4" exhaust on a honda. It'll ruin air velocity and there wont be a good air current streaming through your laptop.
-
Or a 3inch setup on a cammed l76 motor. 4 inches on a honda LOL!
-
No one actually tried to remove that and test the temps, that will be the first thing i will do when I get mine.
-
The last time I remember people used this explanation was on the c90 laptop and the end result was having a gpu that runs 20c cooler like it should be is way more beneficial for the entire system. You shouldn't buy into such a pitiful answer. Look at any properly engineered gaming laptop, there aren't any huge pieces of plastic covering the fan intake they are as open as they can be to keep the major components cooled.
-
Yes, it was done by someone on the forum on their G50Vt.

Well if you take that off it will be pulling all the air from that hole (as you know) but if you leave it on it will suck air from all the other vent holes in the system, cooling all the other things like ram/HDD/gfx/etc.
I took it off in one of my lappies. made my cpu alittle cooler but over heated my other stuff in the computer.
i hope you understand what im going at.. if not oh-well... lol -
Wow, this topic always seems to reappear. Yes, I think the vent is sealed in order to cool other things like the HDD and RAM, as originally explained by Vicious for his G50. But according to Clutch, the black piece on the inside is actually a heatshield for users who want to use it as a laptop, in the truest sense of the word, as the hottest part is located above.
-
wait....use....a laptop....on top of your lap??
 -
1 Fan for processor and GPU. 1 Exhaust for heatsink of both. If it had another side exhaust that might have helped the temps a little bit as well. I'm trying to think of a way on what would cool both of these components better, more towards the GPU a miniature 9800gt.
-
I didn't buy into anything I was just explaining why people voiced reservations about suggesting that the OP remove the piece.
Now I would however have to think though that if temps were "as good as you elude" than every review, guide or comment about reducing heat would include the little sniglet "remove big plastic disc". However this doesn't seem to be the case.
Has any user done extensive testing to see what the "real world" impact is when you remove the piece to either confirm or deny the ASUS response. -
I'm not saying the entire disk needs to be removed, just that there should be a opening for the fan to draw in air. HDD and ram can handle a little more heat so the gpu and cpu run at appropriate temperatures. A laptop like the d900f that uses that has two hdd that sit right on top of each other and a desktop cpu does just fine with a intake vent right above the gpu/cpu fan and only a few slits to get air in above the hdd's.
??, the reason for G51VX heat issues > ?
