Am i right in assuming that the HE has a nicer looking screen than the newer HA?
Im not a big fan of glossy screens to begin with. Anyone have any experience with both?

You should give people more time to respond :)

I have seen the 1005HA and own the 1000HE (same screen as the 1005HA AFAIK) and 1008HA.

There are pros and cons for the 1005HA screen. It's glossy, so the color seems lightly more vibrant, but as with any glossy screen, it suffers from high reflections when used outdoors or in a brightly lit environment. I'd prefer the 1000HE screen, however you should keep in mind that all netbook LED screens are sub-par compared to their notebook brothers. The most obvious is the "blue pollution" where the screen is slightly blue tinted compared to LCD screens. On a day to day usage, it's not so bad, but if you're a photographer or someone that needs accurate color display, then none of the netbooks currently in the market would be suited for you.

I'm a fan of the 1005HA. It's a pretty nice machine. I recently bought one for the wife. I stated off with a 1000HD which is similar to the 1000HE. The 1000HE screen was not as impressive as the 1005HA, the 1005HA has much better color saturation and general image quality. However, part of the problem has to do with the non-glare screen and color/gamma settings.

I was able to get a much better picture by using Adobe gamma. You can use this program to get rid of the blue tint and it makes the overall picture look much better.

I ended up returning the 1000HD for the 1005HA because the 1000HD had some sort of reboot problem. I prefer the 10005HA form factor, it's a bit smaller and the right shift button is a better located.

The 1000HE is a fine machine, I don't think you could really go wrong with it. It's more about preference, I'd say look at both in person and decide based on that.

I will say that I really don't like the mouse buttons on the 1005HA, they are very stiff and a rocker at that. The 1000HE are also stiff, but at least they are separate and can be pushed on the edge of the keyboard rather than having to be pressed in the middle.

    Other things of note:

+ 1000HE has easier access to the hard drive, the 1005HA would have to be taken apart.
+ 1000HE is a bit boxier, not necessarily a negative, but a difference.
+ 1000HE has a standard laptop keyboard vs the 1005HA chicklet style.

    Regards,

    Mike

I was under the impression the 1000HE lid could be opened much further then the 1005HA which is quite constrictive. that 1 or 2 inch difference can really help when looking at the screen.

I think you're right. The 1005HA does have a "clam shell" design and as such does have a restricted max angle. However, this hasn't been an issue for me, but could be depending on the use.

the old version of 1000H had the standard keyboard
1000HE and the newer releases of 1000HA have chiclet (sp?) style.

It's the opposite actually; the 1000HE has the chicklet style keyboard while the 1005HA does not.

The max vertical-tilt screen angle is actually about the same for both the 1005HA, 1008HA and 1000HE.

Sorry to Hi-Jack but I think this would relate to the thread:

Do both of them come with an on/off switch for wireless and the touchpad?

My bad, I thought the 1000HE had the same keyboard as the 1000HD. I thought chiclet referred to the shape of the keys. While the 1005HA doesn't exactly have the chiclet form factor, I thought it would be considered chiclet. I guess not...

1005HA doesn't have an on off for the wireless, but you can do it via the O/S. Not aware of a switch for the touchpad.

chiclet does refer to the shape of the keys...
looking at online pictures (i own the 1000HE), 1000HD has the regular keyboard. while 1005HA has the chiclet style.
personally i dont find one better than the other - its just a matter of taste

1005HA is better than the 1000HE due to longer battery life, smaller size, and lighter weight. Get it.

    It's Fn+F2 on most Asus notebooks/netbooks including the 1005HA.
