Hi there. Am after a new ultra portable unit with a good keyboard and a matte screen. I cannot work on glossy at all. Is there anything light, 11 or 12 inch screen (matte) in the Asus range I should be looking at ? Thanks

Asus are awesome but for one of the best keyboard and matte screen, go for 11.6" ThinkPad X120e w/ AMD Fusion APU w/ 6 cell battery under $460.

A 11-12" Asus matte laptop? AFAIK, I don't think they exist. At least not their current line-up.

I looked at the X120 Lenovo but mostly lenovo have NOISE and HEAT problems at that level ...need something quiet, matte screen, good keyboard. But I loathe noisy fans, or too much heat

The only matte asus under the 13" B43 that I know of is the 10" Eee 1015PEM. There may be a 12" Eee that is matte, but I can't find any definitive answers.

I was about to spring for the X220 until I learned that it has a 7mm drive caddy. Too bad.

Another option might be the Fujitsu Lifebook P771 although it's more expensive.

I have the ThinkPad X120e and it doesn't have heat or noise problem. You are talking about the X100e with the AMD Neo that had horrible battery life, and fans that runs on full blast because of too much heat. That's the reason why X120e was made.

I'm still grabbin the X220 ( unless m11x r3 comes out first), sandybridge cpu & intel hd 3000 ( on par with Geforce 310-320m), more than 7 hours on a 6cell battery that doesn't protrude on the back, great keyboard, IPS Matte screen, fingerprint reader, and ThinkPad durability w/ a great keyboard that weighs less than 3.5lbs on a 6cell.

I did read some reviews that the X120 is still nto exactly silent or cool. From a review:

"AMD has certainly worked on the heat output and the battery drain, as we never felt our test unit become uncomfortably warm. And as you'll see in the battery testing, it managed to eek out a surprising amount of life. But the trade-off is noise: our exhaust fan on the left edge rarely ever stopped, and in most cases, it was cranking full-bore"

Not what I want, I want SILENCE such as the bigger Lenovos, the Samsung netbooks etc. When working just browsing web pages, and doing email, any laptop should remain cool and not have the fan going nuts as these are not very CPU intensive tasks.

Intel's SNB ULV parts should launch around Computex next month. There may be some good ultraportables announced then, but 12" is more of a niche form factor at this point. Of course for ASUS to get one of these shipped it'll probably be some time. :p They have one 12" machine that isn't an Eee, the UL20FT, and it's not a hot seller.

Windows on a MacBook Air seems to be the best option for your needs IMO.
