I had some questions about this odd resolution hopefully some one can answer them,
my first question and probably the most often asked is, is it awkward to look at a screen with this resolution,
I’ve seen picture comparing it to 1600x1200 and it looked ok
I really didn’t see the difference except that the 1600x1200
has extra space on the left and right during some applications
like MS Word or Photoshop, but the icons and text where
relatively the same which is what I really care about.

And the other question is about the ASUS G50vt X5 model,
I know this one comes with 1366x768, so I was wondering
if I connect the X5 to a widescreen TV at what resolution will
it display on the bigger screen (30``+), I think it has to do with
what the graphic card is to put out, so could I put out higher
    resolution on the bigger screen?

    Thanks in advance!

yes, 16:9 is the dumbest idea ever, its good for one thing only, watching videos, and strictly 16:9 videos on full screen.

1366x768 is the 16:9 equivalent of the previously-standard 16:10 1280x800. Compared to 1280x800, the 1366x768 screen will have more horizontal space and less vertical space.

16:9 is the new standard widescreen size for laptops, and 1366x768 is the most common resolution on budget computers.

    What about my other question?

"if I connect the X5 to a widescreen TV at what resolution will
it display on the bigger screen (30``+)"

Laptops usually output VGA to 2560x1600 (or something similar) and HDMI to 1920x1080

possible to upgrade the screen to a better res? i know there are some other G50 models that come with a 1680x1050. would you have to replace some plastic trim too?

    Impractical and most likely impossible.

The easiest way would be to get the whole screen and lid off a broken 1680x1050 G50VT on eBay.

Most games after the fear era. Older games like Doom 3 dont support widescreen res. Though due to the fact that it supports 2 different aspect ratios natively points at the possibility they could have patch it easily for wide screen res.

Last time i played sim city 4 i dont remember it wanting to go out of 4:3 but I know the Sims 2 works in my native widescreen res.

Yea they do. The only game I have run into that doesn't is battlefield 2142 and that game supports the oddest resolutions.

2560x1600 over VGA? Lulz, thats not true. Only DVI-D Dual Link can output that resolution. With VGA, up to 1920x1200 is a definite yes.

My version why 1366x768 came to be is that its the same resolution as basically all recent cheapo HDTV-s.
It doesn't matter if the HDTV is 22", 30" or 100". If the OP`s HDTV is also with 1366x768 resolution, then he would see the exact same thing as on his laptop screen, only bigger, since the resolutions are the same.

Not quite, it only has to do with geometry -- 16:9 screens are cheaper to manufacture than 16:10s, primarily because the plant gets better yield from the starting glass in terms of number of units per sheet.

That too but I was only talking about the resolution as is without any regards to geometry or size. 16:9 it is but the "bog standard" resolution could have been something else, lets say 1600x900, but as it is, it's 1366x768 and that is because in the the HDTV world that is a standard resolution. IMHO.

My friend came over with his m15x the other day with a 1440x900 16:10 screen and next to my 16:9 screen it looked out of place idk why I think the x5 screen is perfect to game on
