    Hi,

    Question for you techy superheroes.

    I have an Asus X53E-SX996V, I7 2670QM 4GB RAM 320GB HDD.

Just finished doing a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium and then carefuly picking a few Asus utilities. Managed to use the exisiting OEM product key by calling Microsoft which was nice.

My Question is, can I fit 16GB of DDR3 to the laptop? I know the I7 specs and Home Premium can both handle it, but Asus only recommend 8GB. Is this due to cooling issues?

    Has anyone done it?

8GB maybe be enough but I'll be using AutoCad Inventor Pro and a lot of Excel analysis work often at the same time.

    Thanks

This is due that the laptop motherboard does not support more than 8gb RAM.... I have an X54H and maximum supportable is 8gb RAM on dual. I would also tell you that the 4GB RAM is largely enough for daily usage

The max RAM Asus reports is sometimes inaccurate. 8GB will work for sure, 16GB may or may not work. They probably released the specs when 8GB SODIMMs weren't available and if you only have two memory slots, that would explain the max of 8GB.

For testing the maximum supportable RAM on your laptop simply go to www.crucial.com and do the test it will give you all information for RAM about your laptop (slot used and available, maximum RAM support and so on) and also you may buy with them at a very affordable price

I need more RAM too. :D
Anyone can confirm the 8GBx2 module compatibility with this notebook?

As I keep repeating myself (perhaps we should make a thread like this and make it a sticky) unless the OEM manufacturer, in this case Asus had limited the system's BIOS/UEFI to detect only 8GB then 16GB will work providing your Intel CPU supports it.

Intel has now been going back and re-validating many of its i series mobile CPU's to check their operation with 8GB SODIMM's.

Unless someone tries we can't be sure on the BIOS/UEFI front but we can on the Intel front since I've just checked your CPU model and it supports 16GB.

    16GB PC3-8500 and PC3-10600 DDR3 supported by Intel i7-2670QM

So to know if we can use more than 8GB on K53SV one have to test at least a 8GB+4GB module, right?

Yes though remember that unless you install the same capacity SODIMM's you'll only get asymmetrical dual channel mode. I essence the 8GB would be symmetrical dual channel while the remainder 4GB would be single channel.

Of course it will be only a run test just to check the compatibility.

Hey guys, wanted to let you know that I bought 2x8GB sticks for my K53SV and I'm now running 16GB! :D Didn't have to change settings in BIOS and it's working great.

Another note for you all, I was curious on what kind of speeds I'd get with a SATA III SSD, ended up with 509 MB/S seq read with a Samsung 840 250GB SSD.

Happy ending then. Just a note about the crucial website, they will probably just go off the manufacturers specifications.

    That's good to know!

Regarding the SSD question: which speed(s) specifically are you curious about? Bus speed of SATA III interface? Read/write speeds?

Hopefully this will help: AnandTech - Bench - SSD

    Hi Guys!

I just wanted to ask what specific Ram (Mhz) did you use for this setup? I'm planning to do the same thing with my ASUS K53SV Laptop, I'm just wondering what (Mhz) should I buy? as I saw on the Internet my Processor Intel i7 2670QM only supported 1066Mhz/1333Mhz Memory Modules. Is it possible to support 1600Mhz from the Processor stated above. If not Do you have any Brand recommendation and MHZ specification for my 8GBX2 (16GB) Ram Purchase? Thanks in Advance! :)

The processors used on this platform can only handle up to 1333MHz, it is IMC (Integrated Memory Controller) limitation.
    ARK | Intel® Core

You can install 1600MHz RAM but it will be clocked at 1333MHz.

Yes you need an unlocked bios to gain access to higher memory speeds.

Hey bkstradling, could you tell me which type of the memory you recommend?
What brand/type do you have working in your k53sv?

Any standard 1333MHz DDR3 memory should work without any issues, but max is 8GB per DIMM with a total of 16GB.
