I'm considering buying a monitor capable of 1920 x 1200 resolution for my G1 laptop with a GeForce Go 7700 card. I can see the resolution as an option on the Nvidia display software, but will the computer actually be able to handle it?

Is anyone using such a monitor setup for games or other intensive applications?

I'll be using the monitor primarily for photo and video editing. In case you are wondering, I'm considering the following:
    - NEC 2490, $1100
    - Samsung T240HD, $350

    Thanks for your input!

The laptop will certainly output to 1920x1200. Whether or not you can game with resolutions near that depend on how powerful a dedicated graphics card you have.

As darthsat mentioned, your G1 can output a 1920x1200 resolution to an external monitor. It will be extremely nice to have such a high resolution to work with for photo and video editing, but you may want/need to lower the resolution when gaming.

Just remember you cant clone or anything like that or it will only match the resolution of your notebook screen. Id recommend setting the external monitor as your primary when you do this.
