You guys are going to think I'm nuts, but I just made another Asus purchase today. I bought a W5a from the same Office Depot (of all places to buy an Asus) Here in Canada for $930 Canadian after taxes and $100 rebate. This one is brand new for sure, because It booted like I had expected the V6V to boot, that is with all the normal steps and without windows already registered!!! I've officially cleaned them out of all their Asus stock...they do still have one V6V demo model left on display for sale though. It was just too good of a deal to pass up on...So in the end I basically got 2 Asus laptops for the price of 1, my grand total between the two computers including all taxes and fees came to $1975 Canadian! (Did I mention that was for TWO Asus laptops!!!)
The crazier thing is, I'm not done yet, I still plan on buying a W3J in July. In all fairness though, I bought the V6V for my Father's use, and I'll eventually be giving this W5a over to my Mother or Girlfriend when the W3J is bought. For the next week or so though, they'll both be mine, ALL MINE!!!![]()
I think I'm going to upgrade the RAM on both of them though, and If I can find someone to ghost the W5's hard drive over to a bigger, faster drive, I'll do that as well. I'm also going to order a 9 cell battery for the W5a from that Asus site we discovered sometime back, hopefully that will go smoothly. Did any Canadians order anything from that site??? I can't remember...If so, what did the extra charges amount to, if any??? (Over and beyond the parts listed price)
I asked this question to Danny already, but I don't think I made it clear, so I'll ask everyone in here their opinion...Do you think It would be physically possible to upgrade the W5a's optical drive with the newer burner drive from the W5F's? I know It's not a modular bay, but would an experienced laptop tech be able to do it without tearing it apart/causing any damage, or is it just not possible with the way they put these little guys together?
I guess that's it for now, I just thought I'd share that with everyone since I'm still experiencing what's known as "new purchase excitement" which is easily compounded by getting such a great deal!!! Any answers to the above questions would be greatly appreciated, thanks![]()

WOW.... lucky man... lucky man =)
-
Office Depot sells Asus laptops? Gonna have to check out my local Office Depot tomorrow
-
Wow.. nice find! You sure are a lucky one
-
Wait, you bought a V6V and a W5a for $1975?!
I don't see any Asus laptops on Office Depot's site, maybe they have them in store only? -
Office Depot AND The Source by Circuit City both carry ENSEMBLE units, though the W5a/f, V6v/a/f, and W3v are the only ones they actually usually have in stock.
-
At least there something good about canada then. kidding of course i like my northern neighbors just fine -
That's really weird, I called two Office Depot locations and they said they don't carry Asus. Nothing on their site either.
-
They do carry it, well, at least they used to.
Perhaps they nulled the contract with ASUS, and are now clearing all stock?
The Source still has them though, was playing with a W5f last weekend at one, while laughing at all their generic overpriced electronics -
Cross talk they are from canada they dont carry them in the USA.
-
Office Depot doesn't list it on their site neither, so it's confusing...

Yeah, under where to buy, Asus has Office Depot listed, thing is, that link is bad now and If you try and search the site, It won't find anything. ALSO, Here in Canada, there seems to be a difference between Staples Office Depot locations and just plain Office Depot locations, Any location with Staples in the signage, doesn't seem to carry any Asus models period. When I first saw these deals, after I bought the V6V and realized windows was registered, I went looking for another location with the same deal and older stock to change it with, thing is, I couldn't find any in my area, so I made them give me even more off. I know a few Canadian Office depots that might still have stock but they're nowhere near Toronto. Like I said, I cleaned them out and got lucky, even though the systems are older spec models. I know for a fact that there's still a V6V demo at the location I bought them from If anyone is interested.
Since the prices Office Depot has them listed for are still in their computers, you could always try and get a price match or guarantee from Tigerdirect or any of the other larger retailers that still carry these models. I don't see how they can honor these prices without losing money, but they might have to by law right???
I know the deals I got are awesome, but they don't seem as good as they did two weeks ago. With all the price drops and rebates available now, you guys can still get some newer spec'ed Asus laptops at some pretty unheard of prices. Anyone who can grab a V6Va or the very last W3V edition models at these prices are getting one hell of a deal.
And yes, to whoever asked, I got both the W5a and V6V for $1975 Canadian all in -

Anyone care to comment on this...

I'd really appreciate an answer -

Pretty sure its possible, its not wielded onto the chassis, and I believe the original W5a had a few modifications for its OD in its lifetime. DVDRW -> DVD+-RW? Or it could be another unit, I don't recall.

You mean with gravy? Poutine? -
[Drooling Homer Voice] "Poutine... Guuuuuhhhh"
Gotta get the gravy on those things as well. Thickens the blood for Canadian winters. I'd consider making a trek up north just to get the real deal. American "Disco Fries" or whatever just aren't the same. -

Thanks Coriolis for responding...too bad all I got from the other's had to do with Poutine!!!
G2P/Eddie, that question was right up your alley, can you confirm that it can be done and expand on how easy it might or might not be to do??? How much do you think the W5F's optical drive/burner goes for on It's own? Thanks in advance
Also, CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IF MICROSOFT WORKS WAS BUNDLED WITH THE V6V???? -
I didn't get it with the V6va, however, I opened a brand new A8jm, and it was included. Why?
And the best place to get poutine is in Old Quebec City, within the brick district(forgot the name of area). It's all brick buildings and there are tons of cafes there....they make the best poutineChunks of fresh cheese curds....
I want some now....and Burger King is the closest place thats open which has it -

Coriolis, Did you get a bag and mouse with your V6Va, Crosstalk wants to know???
I was curious about the works disk because I've seen pictures of peoples "contents of box" and they had the microsoft works disc lying there...I just wanted to make sure mine didn't get "misplaced" If I was supposed to get one, seeing as the box was opened before. Thanks -
Nope, no bag nor mouse.
Just the laptop, a few CDs, the manual.....
