When I open the task manager on my UX31A the Asus apps are listed as 32 bit (like Asus InstantOn Program) as are Google chrome and Microsoft Office. I've checked in the control panel and it says the machine is 64 bit. Why are there 32 bit apps preloaded on my 64 bit and why are new apps I install also 32 bit when the machine should be 64 bit? I want to make sure they haven't mistakenly loaded a 32 bit operating system onto a 64 bit machine.

    Thanks

From MicroSoft's site : 1.Click Start, type system in the Start Search box, and then click System Information in the Programs list.
2.When System Summary is selected in the navigation pane, the operating system is displayed as follows: ◦For a 64-bit version operating system, x64-based PC appears for the System type under Item.
◦For a 32-bit version operating system, x86-based PC appears for the System type under Item.
It is normal to have some 32 bit SW on either 32 or 64 bit windows.
That is a really nice Computer BTW /do you have the Full HD IPS panel?

Most programs doesn't gain much from 64 bit mode and 64 bit Windows can run 32 bit programs without problem. Many programs was created as 32 bit ones and keeping them 32 bit allows them to run on both 32 bit and 64 bit systems.

No point in some programs being 64bit, 64bit programs do take up more ram than their 32 bit counter parts.

Exactly. Some software does not benefit enough from 64-bit addressing, so they program it to utilize 32 bit. There's still a bit of a transition as well, since 64 bit really only became big with Vista and later.

Most web browsers are 32 bit, and Office installs as 32 bit by default for compatibility reasons (although there is a 64 bit option).

..but sadly, many system components are 64 bit, and the interface wrappers the 32 bit programs use to communicate with the system are buggy..

Right, and what makes things more confusing for end users is when things are programmed and advertised as being not a "native" 64 bit application.
