I was looking into buying 2 gigs of ram for a S96J that Ill be buying this summer.. Here's this thing troubling me: since im a student I need to save as much money as possible while getting a decent laptop. The price difference between 2Gb Corsair(667mhz) or 2Gb Specktek (generic 533mhz) is 60$ CAD (50$ USD).
Is it worth using 667mhz vs the 533mhz? I heard since the latency on the 667mhz ram is higher than 533mhz, no real huge benefit is viewable. Advice, opinions?

I'm guessing the 667mhz would be better, but I don't have the hard facts so I'd be interested to know which is truly better myself.
One thing worth mentioning, however, is that Corsair RAM is obviously worth a little more than generic. I've had bad luck with generic lately (currently waiting on an RMA for a stick), so I'd go with a brand name if at all possible. -

The other option is to get 1 Gig of the better stuff now, and wait to buy the other until later when you have more money, that is unless the 2Ghz is critical. But, if the 2Ghz is critical, I would get the better stuff anyway.

I wouldn't go cheap and buy specktech get the corsair much better ram known for its performance and quality. Also consider crucial which is the highest quality with the most stability but the most expensive
-
^ Actually i have specktek for my desktop, 1gig of it, and with a 6800GT i have no problems playing games on high-ish settings. Generic ram isn't as bad as people think..
2gigs immediately is kinda my goal since I'm buying this on my student loan and I have to talk with my parents everytime I buy something. If i were to upgrade a year down the road.. they would yell at me and say "you just got this laptop last summer"... They're computer illiterate for the most part. They use the computer for email, word and excel. -
Personally - I'd go with the 667Mhz...that's a small enough chasm to make the jump. I think I recall seeing some comparison where they were really close in the end, but I just spent some time trying to find it but couldn't - sorry.
-
anyone else with some educated guesses/answers?
-
I know that generally you should have RAM at the same clockspeed as the proc bus speed, it runs more efficiently...
Try doing a Google search and post if you find something. -
I think the question here is more of Corsair or Generic. If memory serves me, I believe I located a place where 533 was $10 cheaper than 667. So that isn't that much of a difference, but $50 is probably more due to the brand name. Anyways, I would definitely go with the Corsair. Whether it be 533 or 667 Corsair, I have also had some bad luck with generic ram.
-
Well, if you're lucky the generic will be fine and you'll be happy. But if something does go wrong, you'll end up paying more in the end then if you'd just bought the Corsair. Eh, I'd go/did go with the namebrand, but I'm like, extremely fatalistic XD

Using 667mhz ram will not give you any perceptible increase outside of a very small 1-3% boost in benchmarks. I'd suggest getting a higher quality 533 if your main concern is price.
-
I'm just thinking, as a student, I can use the 60$ for something else. Like 3 packs of high quality condoms and have enuf fun for months
-
Hmmmm, I saw a deal a while ago $50 for 1000 condoms. If it ever resurfaces, I'll be sure to PM you
-
I'm talking about heat transferable, no smell, no taste, Durex Avanti condomsabout 18$/6pack
-
Well thats probably a first for this board...a laptop discussion becoming a LAP top (or is it tip?) discussion.
lol bad pun sorry.
Carry on. -
what the hell would you do with 1000 condoms. makes for good water balloons i suppose.
I dont think you would notice the speed difference in the ram. if saving money is important just use 2 gigs 533. really isnt like a 5 percent difference in speed. -
-
Regarding Caleb's advice above about buying 1GB now and the other stick later, not such a hot idea. While the performance difference between 533 and 667MHz is barely noticable, the difference between single and dual channel memory configurations at either speed is.
I'd recommend going with a name brand if you can afford it, but I wouldn't go so far as to obsess over it either. I've had some really good luck with generic or lesser known brands in the past (PQI and Geil come to mind). -
Dual Channel and Single channel isn't that much of a difference....well it wasn't for the Pentium M, I have yet to see Core Duo performance for that, so I can't accurately say.
And those 1000 condoms, all random brand name, it was a promotion even to practise safe sex -
Higher quality ram and condoms is the way to go. going from 533 to 667 is not going to give you a huge performance boost as stated earlier, this is because the currently available 667 ram has a higher cas rate. so higher quality in ram like condoms means more reliable and 100% rock solid dependability.
-
hm... nice analogy there... lol. i think thats a first... sex and computers?! woah...
-
Higher quality in ram, is like condoms. It means more reliable and helps you keep it at 100% rock hard while providing you the dependability for the times you really want to let it rip like there's no tommorow -
I really wouldnt be surprised to see 10 years from now people having sex with their computers... lol
It would be kinda awkward calling tech support:
"uhm..hello? ASUS Tech support? My computer kind of.. froze on me.. And now im kind of stuck to it. PLease help me before the fans reache my .. private area... and cut IT off" -
-
lol. that is just funny.

And here I thought this was an innocent discussion about the best method to upgrade a computer, not have sex with it.
