I'd like to upgrade the stock 5400RPM unit to a 7200RPM unit from Seagate or Hitachi. The 100GB Fujitsu unit already gets pretty hot after extended use, so would dropping a 7200RPM unit into this small frame have disaster written all over it?

It would get a little bit more toastier, but it won't explode or anything like that
-
i had one in a v6va which is thinner you will have no problems.

Fujitsu's 5400rpm HDDs are rather hot and noisy compared to others. You may not see much difference if you replace it with 7200rpm Hitachi HDD.

If your Fujitsu's anything like the one I had in my old laptop, a 7200rpm Hitachi will actually run cooler.

Well, I bought a Seagate 100GB Momentus 7200.1 from NewEgg for $154 shipped. Should be here Wednesday. I'll post back with my results.

Fuji 5400 seagates and hotachis all run at very similar temps. Atleast they did last year. Nothing changed much they all still hit 60C under long sress tests. If you have a fuji now you prolly wont feel any diff between that and a 7200.

When I got my Seagate 5400.3 it ran faster and cooler than my Fujitsu drive.
In my opinion he will notice a difference, after installing the 5400.3 my W3J it could boot in 30 sec. -
Well, I got it installed. Used Ghost to transfer my old drive to the new one. Boots faster, loads Photoshop much faster and doesn't seem any warmer than the Fujitsu.
Not bad for $155(Seagate 100GB 7200.1)

Even on a dual Xeon powered workstation it greatly improves startup and opening times. -

If you have to do it for performance, go with the Seagate. I wouldn't suggest it in that size unit from personal experience unless you NEED the performance......and if you do, the productivity alone will pay for the drive. but you've got to expect more heat and less better life and a little bit more noise.

No hotter than the toasty Fujitsu and it's **** fast.
My W5F loves me for it
