I'd like to replace the 5400rpm hard drive in my G1S. I have so many fond memories of how well and how fast my old Dell D820 ran with 'er 100gb 7200rpm drive. I can really tell the difference, even in this "faster" computer...
I was thinking of this Hitachi 200gb 7200rpm:

...but I don't know if this is the best option. Any other recommendations? (Price is a bit high! I'm in Canada).
Also, if I get a new HD, will I have to install everything fresh all over again, or is there a way to transfer absolutely everything from my current hard-drive to the new one and boot up as normal?
And lastly, is it true that at 250gb+, there is no difference between a 7200rpm drive and a 5400rpm? If so, perhaps I should just go ahead and buy a 250gb 5400 rpm drive.

well from my experience - i have instaled 200gb 7200rpm sata2 seagate momentus - there is difference if we talk about file opreations speed, try instaling need for speed prostreet on 5400rpm and 7200rpm, it takes less time.
i have instaled fresh system on that hdd cuz laptop was also fresh, but if u wana migrate one option is for sure, try using some imagining software to make/backup system partition image and than recover it to fresh hdd, other option that i havnt tested is to use usb/sata2 2.5 hdd controler on both hdds and use partition magic on pc to move or for security copy partition... direct coping file wont help i think -

The 7K200 you linked to is the best notebook drive out there now and is well worth it (I upgraded my notebook to one as well).
It continues to be on the leaderboard for notebook drive at storagereview:

That price seems a bit high on the one you linked to considering that it can be bought in US for $180 US:

Sorry for hijacking your thread, but will upgrading the HDD void the warranty on the G1S?
-
Nope, only the CPU does I believe
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Correct. It has been well-established that HDD and RAM upgrades do not void warranty. CPU or other items covered by warranty seals, well, that's obvious
.
Some folks will save the old HDD to put back in if the unit ever goes back for warranty work, but no one around here has ever reported a problem like that with Asus NA refusing to honor the warranty on a notebook with upgraded HDD. -
Thanks a lot! That means that i can replace my HDD with the hitachi 200gb 7200 rpm that i got via the best buy hitachi external hdd deal!!
OP, u may wanna check that deal in the deals forum as i got it for 125$ on the thanksgiving week but u still can get it for around 140$ i guess which is still way lower then its retail 200$! -
The problem is not the honoured warranty but if they decide to send you a new unit (common practice from Asus NA I think), well, you loose the part you upgraded yourself.
So I'd always put everything back before sending -
It's the best option if you ask me. Like a 5400 RPM in heat output and sound (most 7200 RPM drives produce a hell lot more heat and sound), but as fast as normal 7200 RPM drive. It also has data encryption. -
Thanks guys. I'll wait 'til it's on sale again

I opted for the Momentus, as in Australia the difference in price compared to the Travelstar was 30% and the difference in performance was like 5% or less. If you want the best and don't care about price, then get the Hatachi, if you're after a good improvement in performance without over-spending, the Seagate is the way to go IMO.

I don't know these particular types but in general I'd always recommend Seagate over Hitachi for notebooks: more silent, more power efficient. Of course this might be reversed for some models.
